This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Matt, who's volunteered to work at Burning Man for years. He asked to only use his first name for privacy reasons, but Insider has verified his identity and story with documentation. It has been edited for length and clarity.
In 1997, I was living in Chicago, and a friend and I along with one of his friends were starting an art co-op. About a month after we held our first event, my friend was riding his bicycle over to my house and was hit by a truck — he was killed instantly. His buddy and I knew that we had to honor his art dreams.
My older brother had been working for Burning Man in San Francisco, so this friend and I flew out there and traveled to the desert with him. Burning Man is held about three hours north of Reno, Nevada, basically where the roads end and turn into dirt. Every year, the location pivots slightly so that there's less wear and tear on the land overall. We try to keep the land in as good shape as possible.
Courtesy of Matt
Back then, it wasn't nearly as structured, so there we were, in 110-degree weather, with no generators, tents, or RVs, just people doing weird stuff with art. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before.
I started off just jumping right in with my older brother and working the event, and I just kept going from there. I also work a lot of orphan burns, which are burns in different places around the world that take place outside of the official Burning Man.
All of the events just get better and better every year. I work 20-hour days, bouncing between four different departments, and I just love it.
Courtesy of Matt
One of the principles of Burning Man is to not leave a trace, meaning we don't have an ongoing structure. So every year, we show up and have to plot out the land and build up the event starting about two weeks before everyone arrives.
After surveying the land, the location of each department is flagged off and we decide where trash facilities will go, where each camp can go, where we need to build the border fence, and where to establish the roads. There's an entire airport built as well for arrivals and departures as well as for skydiving during the event. An entire city is built and then disappears.
Courtesy of Matt
Burning Man is a pretty intense organization because we're all dedicated to the mission and the principles. And it takes a lot of hard work and expertise to pull off this large-scale project.
This isn't like Coachella — we're not bringing in Kanye West, there's no stages set up, you aren't going to come here and sell your veggie burritos. Burning Man is a blank canvas provided for people to come and make their own art. You're going there to gift what you have to other people.

The themes can be anything — maybe it's a Western saloon or a yoga camp. We don't have food vendors, so you need to bring your own food, generator, freezer, anything you need to live for the time you're there. The full event lasts eight days. And in these theme camps, art installations are created once the event starts.
One of the coolest camps I've seen was a speakeasy jazz club. It was just this huge sensory experience. You walked through a carport with a swinging, single light bulb and ultimately find yourself in a full-on nightclub complete with hardwood floors, a fully-stocked bar, light fixtures, tables and chairs, and gorgeous artwork everywhere.
Burning Man is all about self-reliance, and with that comes an abundance of resources. One year, my luggage got lost, but thanks to the help of other attendees, I had three new toothbrushes, four air mattresses, a few tents, and clothes to choose from within hours.

Each year, the designers work on creating the wooden statue figure that's sometimes stood over one hundred feet high and is set ablaze.
A lot of planning goes into the burning man. Safety is paramount, and the team is made up of engineers and pyrotechnic experts who make sure that the burn will be controlled and stay within the perimeter.

In the '90s, there was this one guy — I think he was called Pyro Boy — and he had on some kind of protective suit and lined it with a bunch of different fireworks. He'd light himself and start all these explosions, then charged the man and light it on fire with his own body. Today, with almost 70,000 attendees, we have to be a bit more controlled with the burn.
You'll find something amazing. One of the best parts of Burning Man is you can go up to anyone, anywhere, and just talk to them. There's no attitude, no snubbing. I have a friend I met at Burning Man over 20 years ago who always brings me Coca Cola and sunscreen because I tend to forget it. One time, we were sitting in lawn chairs taking a break when an older man rode up on a bicycle and asked for some water.
We all ended up getting to talking. Usually at Burning Man you don't talk about your regular life. No one knows what you do in the real world. This isn't about networking. But this older man isn't a festival goer, and so my friend is telling him about how he works for General Dynamics in Houston, Texas. Turns out, my friend worked on rockets for NASA. I'd known him for 20 years, and I had no idea. Then the older guy says, "What a coincidence, I helped design the rockets for the Apollo 11 mission." I'm sitting there next to two guys who were both rocket scientists!
But honestly, it didn't surprise me. Because Burning Man is weird about making synchronistic connections all the time.

Past and present Top Gear hosts paid tribute to Sabine Schmitz, who sadly passed away from cancer in March, in a special look back at the German professional motor racing driver’s career. Chris Harris, in particular, praised the star for her bravery before recalling the terrifying moment she was in control of the throttle as the pair took part in chain-car racing and a separate incident that saw her vehicle catch fire during an off-road sporting event.
Discussing his experience of chain-car racing, Chris said: “It’s not something I want to do again.”
“Poor Chris, I don’t think he knew Sabine was going to be driving the chain car, he was in the back operating the breaks and Sabine had steering and throttle,” Matt LeBlanc explained.
“This is a woman that has barrel-rolled many cars, she doesn’t give a monkeys and true to form, it hurt,” BBC presenter Chris shared.
“I know Harris quite well from the olden days and I know he was genuinely alarmed by that I can tell the difference,” former host James May added.
During a clip from the race, Chris can be heard shouting in pain before crying out: “This is the worst thing I’ve done! You total lunatic.”

“It scared him, it takes quite a lot to scare Chris and Sabine thought it would be funny,” James said.
Chris continued: “What was really telling, actually, in all of these events was you can tell someone’s got a natural driving gift when you just throw them into anything. Sabine was that person, she was a bit like a swiss army knife.
Matt added: “You never got a sense of danger with her behind the wheel ever there was only the King of the Hammers thing.”
The King of the Hammers is an extreme off-road competition held every in Southern California and is considered one of the world’s most challenging motorsport events.
“I can’t wait actually,” she replied. “Don’t cry, Harris please.”
Owner of the King of the Hammers, Dave Cole delivered a damming prediction on Chris and Sabine’s chances in the race.
He said: “She’s going to kill it, you’re not going to make it. I’ve heard she’s already been upside down and you’re worried about that.
“So you’re going to drive scared and you’ll be upside down anyway, she’s going to kill it.”
“I was stood there thinking, ‘A, that hurts and B, you’re probably right. I didn’t want to be there at that point but she loved it,” Chris explained.
However, disaster struck during the competition between the presenters when Sabine’s vehicle caught alight.
“She never looked afraid, speed didn’t bother her,” Matt continued and Chris added: “And then it caught fire.
“She didn’t give a monkey’s about any of it I mean fire is a problem.”
“I remember telling her to pull over and get out and she very calmly pulled over and got out,” Matt recalled. “I don’t even think she raised her voice.”
The ‘Queen of the Nürburgring’ became a huge success on Top Gear when she helped Jeremy Clarkson take on the iconic race track.
She appeared on the show several times since and helped host the show when it relaunched in 2016.
Current hosts Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris paid tribute to Sabine alongside Jeremy, Richard Hammond and James May.
Matt and Rory Reid who both presented the show with Sabine after its relaunch also reflected on the driver’s life.
Top Gear: A Tribute to Sabine Schmitz is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Eamonn Holmes, 61, and his wife Ruth Langsford, 61, were on hand to host Wednesday’s edition of the programme and the former teased he had an announcement to make at the start of the show. Midway through This Morning, the presenter told viewers of the ITV show he was going to become a grandad as his eldest son Declan is expecting a child with his wife, Jennie. The presenter and his wife were visibly emotional over the news as they fought back the tears.
At the beginning of the announcement, Eamonn said: “I’ve been having a very tough week. Tell everyone how tough my week has been.”
Ruth replied: “It’s been very, very tough. No, it has and you’ve told people a lot but I do know he is in a lot of pain.”
Taking over, the former Sky News broadcaster added: “I don’t like complaining about anything,” before explaining he’d had a lot of support from viewers over his recent back problems.
“It hasn’t been a good time and I’ve been in tears and I’ve been in tears again because it involves these two people here.”
An image of Declan and Jennie was shown on screen as Eamonn’s children don’t tend to make appearances on his shows.

“The clue is their surname is Holmes. Declan is my eldest boy, he’s 32 years of age and there is Jennie his beloved wife,” the presenter explained.
“And they have just announced that I’m going to be a grandparent which means I am a [grandad],” he continued as Ruth applauded him.
Declan is Eamonn’s eldest child from his first marriage to Gabrielle Holmes, which ended in 1995 following the birth of two other children; Rebecca and Niall.
Along with his wife Ruth, the broadcaster also has another son called Jack but Declan is the first to give the television veteran a grandchild.
Taking to Twitter, viewers reacted to the news as one wrote: “@EamonnHolmes so glad you’re going to be a granddad. You had me worried for the last hour. Also Granny @RuthieeL. Congratulations to the parents of the new arrival due in July.
Another posted: “Thought Eamonn Holmes was gonna retire or something…he’s gonna be a grandad? Great news but very badly worded… #ThisMorning.”
A third remarked: “@EamonnHolmes @thismorning Geez Eamonn, you news sounded like there was something seriously wrong with you. Can you be less dramatic and sound more cheerful.”
“Not very impressed with Eamonn Holmes leading everyone on to think he’s poorly or something only to then announce he’s going to be a Grandad? Badly worded lead up #ThisMorning,” a fourth shared.

It was only last year, Eamonn and Ruth spoke out about the idea of becoming grandparents in the not-so-distant future.
Discussing the prospect on the show last year in light of school closures because of the pandemic, the former said: “The next time we are in a school will be when we are grandparents.”
Ruth added: “We will be grandparents! I will look forward to it. You don’t have all the responsibility, do you?
“You just have all the nice stuff, like prize-giving, the nativity play, you don’t have to do early morning school runs.”
“We look forward to those days again,” Eamonn said but back in 2018, he added more speculation to the rumour mill he was going to be a grandad.
The presenter said: “If it’s God’s will and there are grandchildren then I would be the most fun granddaddy on the block!”
“He doesn’t like the thought of being a grandpa because it makes him feel old,” Ruth explained in an interview with HELLO!
“But I can guarantee you the minute a baby is put in his arms and is his son’s child, he will be mush. I can’t wait! I think it will be lovely,” she added.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
“Well, let’s join these little fellas, who’ve started already! Aren’t they gorgeous?” Sally commented in reference to the clip of the penguins.
“That’s the London aquarium where penguins, they’ve been a bit bored during lockdown because it’s been so quiet, they’ve been watching Christmas films.”
“They are watching one of the King’s of Christmas films; Elf,” Dan explained and Sally interjected: “Not one of, best one ever, top one!”
“You know everyone says It’s a Wonderful Life is a Christmas film and actually, it’s only Christmas right at the very end,” Dan told viewers.
“So how do you qualify for a Christmas film? We were saying earlier, I say Die Hard is a Christmas film, but I know other people get very agitated.”

If anyone’s more stoked than fans about The Walking Dead’s “Caryl” spinoff, it’s Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, the actors who have brought them to life for a decade. “In playing Carol, and as a viewer of the show, I’ve… long been intrigued with Daryl and Carol,” McBride said in a statement, “and by what so early on between them, even then, felt somehow bound.
“Their shared history is long, and each’s own personal fight to survive, even longer — the more obvious aspect of what has kept them close and loyal,” she continued. “But there is also a rather mysterious aspect to their fondness for one another that I enjoy, and their playfulness when the world permits.”
Reedus’ sentiments echo those of his leading lady, the flagship series’ only other remaining original cast member. After noting that The Walking Dead had “changed my life and career,” he said that “Daryl’s relationship with Carol has always been my favorite relationship on the show — sorry, Rick. I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can’t wait to see where their ride goes from here.”
Added McBride: Walking Dead showrunner — and the spinoff’s co-creator — Angela Kang “has a way of shaking things up in great and unexpected ways. She’s like a kid playing with the dimmer switch! I’m very excited” to see what she comes up with.

Laura, 38, was on hand to present the weather from Stroud for the last Good Morning Britain instalment of the week. The forecaster took herself off to a hillside, overlooking beautiful countryside scenery as the sun rose on what could be one of the hottest UK days on record. However, what she and her ITV co-stars Ranvir Singh, 42, and Adil Ray, 46, didn’t expect was a herd of cows to interrupt the report.
The studio presenters handed the reins over to Laura but as they did, she was nowhere to be seen, instead, the camera was firmly focussed on the intruders.
“What’s happening?” the meteorologist could be heard saying to her cameraman, to which Ranvir asked: “Laura, how far away are you parked?
“Can you make a run for it if you need to?” the host continued before the weather reporter replied: “We can’t – we’re parked right through that part.”
“There’s quite a lot of them,” she added, to which Adil remarked: “There’s quite a lot of them,” with the camera panning to show the entire herd right next to the crew.
“They’re planning something, they’re boxing you in. This will be interesting,” the Ackley Bridge star joked.

“Did we fill out a health and safety form before you went up there, Laura?” Ranvir asked in a jokey tone.
“We’re trying to keep our social distancing but we’re also trying to huddle together – it’s like a herd mentality,” Laura replied.
“Well, good luck this morning Laura that’s all we can say – we’ve loved working with you,” the political reporter quipped.
Adil offered some further reassurance, telling the forecaster: “I’m sure you’ll be absolutely fine. Look after yourselves and we’ll be back with you soon.”
“They’re all looking at us,” the forecaster continued, to which Adil added: “I did see one of the cameras move and wondered, ‘Was that one of the cows?’”
Taking to Twitter, those watching at home commented on the intruders, as one wrote: “Brilliant. Laura, you have the best job in the world.”
Another added on the social media platform in hope to warn the forecaster: “Watch out for bulls, Laura!!”
Despite the mayhem caused by the unexpected guests, Laura still managed to tell viewers what they could expect as the nation is gripped by a heatwave over the next few days.
The meteorologist explained the north is likely to see temperatures hit the high-20s from today and will remain until next Thursday.
Thunderstorms are expected by Tuesday as the warm weather clashes with a colder front as temperatures begin to dip slightly.
For England and Wales, Friday will see highs of 37 degrees and they will drop to the mid-20s by next Wednesday.
Again, storms are forecast as the weather fronts clash and viewers were warned to take extra care when enjoying the sunshine.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
Kate Garraway presented Good Morning Britain alongside Ben Shepherd this morning and the two of them spoke to former politician Alistair Campbell and television presenter Anna Williamson about – what has been called – the ‘second pandemic’ which refers to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown will have on mental health. In a candid moment, Kate revealed her own fears for her children Darcey and Billy.
As GMB viewers know, back in March, Kate’s husband Derek was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with coronavirus.
Unfortunately, it has affected him greatly and doctors decided a medically induced coma would be the best way for his body to recovery – but a few months on and Derek is yet to regain consciousness.
During a discussion on the show about the impacts, the pandemic will have on people’s mental wellbeing, Kate wanted to know how children are set to be affected.
Kate began: “So the advice we can take for ourselves, both of you, in particular, spoke about parents.

“What about the youngsters in all of this?
“I have a particular concern for Darcey and Billy not just for them but suddenly their world is very unsafe.
“But actually all youngsters’ worlds suddenly feel very unsafe,” she added.
“What can we do to navigate our children through that?
“Anna from you briefly, because we could talk about this all day,” Kate added.
“Mostly with his own social interactions and how he hasn’t been able to hug his grandparents for however many months, so children can understand.”
Anna continued: “So, how we can best support themes is by listening to what their concerns and their fears are and troubleshooting them straight away.
“That would be the first thing I would do and children can talk to childline or Mind charity, which Alastair and I are very passionate about.
“The key thing is for children and for adults the key thing is that this pandemic has affected everyone. Do not sit there and suffer in silence,” she emphasised.
Ralf Little who plays DI Neville Parker joined the cast of Death in Paradise just a few weeks ago when he was called in to replace DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon), but DI Neville didn’t take to the island as easily as he thought he might. He was told he wasn’t allowed to leave the island but last week he was given the all-clear worrying fans he would be leaving the show for good.
Since DI Jack Mooney left, DI Neville has failed to get his head around how the island of Saint Marie works.
He is just a couple of weeks into his new role on the island but he has already had his hands full.
DI Neville was told his boss wanted him to see through the case leaving the newcomer with no choice but to stay put.
In last week’s finale, following weeks of complaining, the lead detective was given the all-clear to go home.

Joining his team at a party to celebrate Officer JP Hooper’s (Tobi Bakare) achievement in becoming a Sergeant, Neville asked if he could stay.
Last week, viewers saw Neville explain to the team: “I’m fed up of living life the way I have to, instead of the way I want to.
“What I’m saying is I’d love to be your DI permanently if you’ll have me.”
Ralf has now revealed what he has been doing to prepare for future series as DI Neville.
He said: “There may be a scene that they write where it’s like, ‘Oh Neville’s having a shower’, and then he sees Harry and he runs out of the shower.
“What I want to happen on the day of shooting, when they go, ‘Okay, can you…?’ I’ll just take my T-shirt off and they’ll go, ‘Wait a second. Why are you ripped?’
“Neville is not meant to be ripped but I’m going to give them no choice.
“I’ve never bothered to be motivated before so I’m going to be like, ‘Right, just in case’.”
Ralf spoke to Express.co.uk before he started the BBC show, and when asked if he saw Death in Paradise continuing he said: “I certainly hope so unless I kill it off!
“If I’m terrible. I could be for Death in Paradise was George Clooney was for Batman.
“You’d need Christian Bale to come into Death in Paradise and resurrect it!
“Its appeal is hard to quantify. People talk a lot about the escapism of it, which is definitely a thing because of the time of year and it’s just beautiful, gorgeous.”
Death in Paradise continues on BBC One tonight at 9pm.
Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media outlets, Richard said: “It was a really really hard scene to play I’ve got to say.
“I don’t know how you receive that information in that situation and believe it.”
Following the bombshell, Adam immediately gets on the phone to contact his wife Corrine Price (Dervla Kirwan).

BBC News presenter Martine Croxall returned to the studio with the two o’clock news yesterday afternoon, but before she could deliver the latest headlines, she suffered a terrible blunder when the cameras decided to do their own thing.
Ready and waiting to introduce herself and the show to those watching at home, Martine was embroiled in a very awkward moment live on television screens across the nation yesterday,
She kicked off the news bulletin standing up, facing the camera, she said: “Hello everybody, this is Afternoon Live.”
Before she was able to say anything more, she was lost out of view as the camera whipped straight past her and cut her out of the picture.
Panning around the news desk and to the right of the studio, Maxine was unable to do anything but follow the camera.

“I’ve lost you!” She remarked to the viewers.
Thinking quickly, she decided: “I shall make my way back to the desk. I think that’s the safest thing to do.
“Do excuse me, I shall tell you all about our too story in just one second.”
Those who had tuned in saw Martine walk through the darkness, calmly over to her seat, before sitting down and the spotlights coming on.
A third added: “Computer controlled cameras. Prefer having live camera operators.”
“@MartineBBC @BBCNews #MartineCroxall #BBCNews Enjoyed your 2 O’clock walk-about, Martine. A first?” Another suggested.
“When in doubt just go and sit down. Couldn’t have been handled better even if it had been scripted. Brilliantly handled,” a tweet read.
Viewers of BBC news will know how the cameras which record the bulletins are not operated by a person, instead they are computer operated.
