  • Deposit box holders whose property was seized by the FBI in a March 2021 raid are suing the bureau.
  • The agency raided US Private Vaults and seized the contents of 1,400 safety deposit boxes.
  • A lawyer involved in the class-action said the FBI raid was the "largest armed robbery in US history."

A lawsuit filed after FBI agents raided a Beverly Hills vault company, seizing more than $ 86 million in cash as well as jewelry and gold from 1,400 safety deposit boxes, claims owners' items have still not been returned and that agents misled a judge to get the warrant.

Agents raided a branch of US Private Vaults in Beverly Hills in March 2021 and seized assets from boxes held by hundreds of people who were not suspected in any crimes, state court papers reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The FBI and the US attorney's office in Los Angeles obtained search and seizure warrants against US Private Vaults by concealing critical details from the judge who approved them, according to the lawsuit.

Robert Frommer, a lawyer with the Institute for Justice which brought the lawsuit, said in the court papers: "The government did not know what was in those boxes, who owned them, or what, if anything, those people had done."

After the raid many box-holders asked the FBI for their property back, Frommer told Insider.

"We brought suit on behalf of seven clients, but we were representing a class of at least 400 people. What we've been trying to show for the past several months is that the government's actions violated the search and seizure protections of the US constitution in the Fourth Amendment," he said.

"The scope of what the FBI did is unprecedented," Frommer added. "This was the largest armed robbery in United States history, and it was committed by the FBI."

After a two-year investigation that began in 2019, leaders of the FBI's Los Angeles office believed boxes at US Private Vaults were being used by criminals to store illicit proceeds. 

The FBI requested and obtained warrants to seize US Private Vaults' business property. However, a senior FBI agent recently testified that the warrant omitted a key part of the bureau's plan – to permanently seize everything in every box that contained at least $ 5,000 in cash or goods, the LA Times reported.

Frommer said in an Institute for Justice press release last month: "The FBI lied about its intentions in claiming to only be interested in the property of the business, and not the box holders. Ultimately, the lure of civil forfeiture turned these federal cops into robbers."

Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman, told the LA Times the warrants were lawfully executed "based on allegations of widespread criminal wrongdoing. At no time was a magistrate misled as to the probable cause used to obtain the warrants."

US Private Vaults has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder drug money, and the investigation was continuing, Eimiller added.

The FBI and Department of Justice did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Frommer wants the government to destroy any information or records obtained from customers' boxes in what he said was a violation of the Fourth Amendment.

The Fourth Amendment protects against "unreasonable searches and seizures." It requires the government to get a warrant by showing probable cause explaining why a location needs to be searched and describing specifically what it is seizing.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit have asked for the FBI raid to be deemed unconstitutional by a district judge, the LA Times reported. Doing so could force the return of assets worth millions of dollars to box holders.

Hawaii Five-0 vet Chi McBride is headed back to the Eye network, with a role opposite Pete Holmes in an untitled CBS comedy pilot, our sister site Deadline reports.

In the project, based on professional bowler Tom Smallwood’s life, a seemingly ordinary man named Tom (Holmes) decides to provide for his family by following his dream of becoming a professional bowler after being laid off from the GM factory’s assembly line. McBride will play Archie, the proud owner of a bowling alley and Tom’s mentor/longstanding father figure.

Don Cheadle is taking a stroll down memory lane: The ten-time Emmy nominee has joined the cast of ABC’s reboot of The Wonder Years as the show’s narrator.

The reboot, which is executive-produced by Lee Daniels and earned a pilot order in January, centers on a Black teen named Dean Williams and his family living in Montgomery, Alabama during the turbulent 1960s. Cheadle will narrate the flashbacks as the grown-up version of Dean, as Daniel Stern did on the original Wonder Years for Fred Savage’s Kevin Arnold. “Featured via narration as he reflects back on his younger self growing up in 1968,” the official description says, “Adult Dean is our present-day Dean, who also happens to be a new grandfather.”

Cheadle currently stars as ’80s Wall Street trader Mo Monroe on the Showtime comedy Black Monday, earning two Emmy nominations for the role. He also reprised his Marvel movie role as Rhodey/War Machine on this month’s series premiere of Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

USA Network may be Walking Tall, with WWE star Charlotte Flair attached to headline a potential series remake of the 1973 film, our sister site Deadline reports.

Flair, who appeared in Psych: The Movie, will play a Tucson cop who finds herself caught in a web of fraud, exploitation and murder, forcing her to go full vigilante to protect her home town from falling victim to modern corruption. (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson starred in a 2004 movie remake of the original film, which featured Joe Don Baker as a professional wrestler-turned-lawman.)

The project, which is only in the development stage, is being eyed as a two-hour TV-movie, with the hope that it will lead into future instalments or an ongoing series. Executive producer/writer David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) is behind the adaptation.

ABC’s ’90s girl group has found its fourth member: My Name Is Earl vet Nadine Velazquez has joined the Alphabet network’s hip-hop drama pilot Queens, our sister site Deadline reports.

The potential series follows four women in their 40s who reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had as the ’90s hip-hop group Nasty Bitches. Velazquez’s character, Valeria, was known as the Puerto Rican rapper Butter Pecan. The other members of the quartet are played by Eve (Eve), Brandy (Moesha) and Naturi Naughton (Power).

Velazquez’s TV credits also include Six, Major Crimes and The League.

The SAG Awards are taking a “shorter is better” approach to this year’s ceremony, which will consist of a one-hour, pre-taped telecast, our sister site Variety reports.

The program — which will not have a host or even a set — will consist of a mix of winner announcements, comedy bits and the SAG Awards’ signature “I Am An Actor” mini-speeches from performers.

An American Horror Story fan favorite is returning to the fold.

Frances Conroy, last seen playing both Myrtle and Moira in the FX anthology’s eighth season (AHS: Apocalypse), is rejoining the all-star cast for Season 10, series creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed. “Our beloved Frannie is indeed in this season,” Murphy wrote in response to a fan’s inquiry on Instagram.

Sonic the Hedgehog is racing over to Netflix: The streamer has ordered the animated series Sonic Prime, based on the Sega video game.

Premiering in 2022, the 24-episode “animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans draws upon the keystones of the brand and features the ‘Blue Blur’ of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands,” per the official synopsis. “Sonic’s adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption.”

Sonic the brand celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The character was previously adapted into a 2020 movie starring Ben Schwartz (as the voice of Sonic) and Jim Carrey (as Dr. Robotnik).

Attention, #FreeBritney advocates: The New York Times Presents‘ latest episode, “Framing Britney Spears,” will debut Friday, Feb. 5 at 10/9c, simultaneously on FX and FX on Hulu.

In the standalone documentary installment, “people close to Britney Spears and lawyers tied to her conservatorship now reassess her career as she battles her father in court over who should control her life,” per the official synopsis.
