Antiques Roadshow star Alastair travelled to Buckfast Abbey for the valuation in question, with the guest bringing along a giant silver plate. The relic was brought on the off-chance it might have had some value, but the owner was left in disbelief when he realised the item had a very interesting backstory. This led him to question whether he could make some changes to it to up the value, only for the expert of the BBC programme to warn him it would be a “criminal offence” if he were to do so.

Getting his hands on the gold-coloured silver dish, Alastair asked: “You’ve got here a pretty spectacular silver-gilt dish, where did you get it from?”

The guest explained: “I brought it online, actually. I sort of dabble a little bit with silver and things and this was one of the things that came up and I’ve had it now for four to six months.”

Going into further analysis, the expert said: “If we turn it over, it’s got some marks here on the back which have all got crosses right through them.

“Do you know why they’ve got that?” he inquired, to which the relic owner replied: “I don’t. Hopefully, you’re going to tell me.”

Evaluating the piece more intently, the expert noticed one of the marks was the letter F, determining an original dish would have been curated in 1761.

Unfortunately, the one the guest had brought along was changed to try and pass it off as a dish which would match the original.

“It’s gone to the London assay office and been put in front of the Antique Plate Committee, which is the adjudicating body that makes opinions officially on all things of a suspect nature,” Alastair continued.

“And this was thought to be an illegal piece of silver, that’s why it was sent,” the expert explained, leaving the guest in shock.

“It was altered in the 19th Century from something much plainer into something different.

“It was probably something like a large meat dish or a salver that was converted into the sort of hubcap shape but deemed to be what’s called an illegal alteration.”

“So in order to make it legal, they cross out the marks, but they re-mark it,” the expert continued, describing how the look of the silver-dish was changed.

Alastair then determined from the marks the piece had been altered quite recently, 2018 to be precise which left him and the guest bewildered.

Asking how much the owner of the relic had paid for it, the expert learnt it cost him around £800 via online purchase.

“Well, I’m glad to tell you that you paid, not an over-the-top price. It’s worth somewhere between £700 and £1,000,” the expert revealed.

However, there was some bad news as he told the guest: “If this was genuine, we’d be looking at ten times that.”

“Can we not scrub those marks?” the owner of the gold-coloured silver dish asked before Alastair issued his warning.

“That would be another offence and a criminal offence,” the expert explained, before stating it was a “good piece of silver”.

“You can put fruit in it. You can have your cornflakes out of it. You could put it on the side of your car,” he commented.

The show is currently off-air as new episodes are being filmed in accordance with coronavirus and social distancing regulations.

Host Fiona Bruce, 56, said of the new arrangements: “Normally we welcome around 5,000 people to each Antiques Roadshow, but of course, in these extraordinary times, we will have to do things very differently.

“We’ve come up with a new way to safely film the show yet still bring you amazing items and stories. I can’t wait to see what treasures you have hidden in your homes.”

It has not yet been revealed when the new episode will start to air, but it is likely they will hit screens early next year.

Antiques Roadshow is now available to watch on BBCiPlayer.

Antiques Roadshow: ‘Goodness gracious’ Man blown away by £1m item in epic valuation reveal https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-goodness-gracious-man-blown-away-by-1m-item-in-epic-valuation-reveal/ https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-goodness-gracious-man-blown-away-by-1m-item-in-epic-valuation-reveal/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2019 05:52:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-goodness-gracious-man-blown-away-by-1m-item-in-epic-valuation-reveal/

Tonight’s edition of Antiques Roadshow was taking place at the Black Country Museum in the West Midlands, and was hosted by presenter Fiona Bruce.

While there were a number of surprises along the way, as the public came out in their droves to share antiques and vintage treasures hidden in their homes.

But the most unexpected valuation of all came at the very end of the BBC programme when a custodian taking care of a Faberge glass pear blossom flower was bowled over by the unexpected price tag.

The “regimental jewel” featured the Worcestershire emblem and was manufactured by the famous jewellery company.

On careful inspection, the valuer joked” “It’s almost as if we can see from time to time new buds are going to blossom on here.

“That would be quite something wouldn’t it?”

The valuer continued to scrutinise the incredibly detailed piece, which appeared to glisten in the sunlight outside the Black Country museum.

“There’s been nothing of this scale,” the valuer went on. “It’s the size of the object, the sophistication of the object that brings it very very close to only two other flowers in the UK which are in the Royal collection.

“It’s a towering masterpiece by the goldsmith’s art, and by one of the most impressive goldsmith’s of the 20th Century.

“So I am going to tell you that in my opinion, this is worth £1 million.”

“Really?” the custodian whispered, as a collective “wow” erupted from the audience.

“Goodness gracious!” the custodian then declared, seemingly lost for words at first.

Eventually finding his voice, the man then joked: “Well I’m supposed to say now that’s not for sale…

“Well it certainly is for sale!” he laughed.

“That’s the rub!” the valuer shot back with a giggle, and the opposite man reminded everyone he was “just the custodian”.

Also in the programme, one woman showcased a Ming dynasty Buddha statue that had been passed down through her family.

“The lady who owned it first died,” she began. “Then my aunt had it in 1968 and possibly my father. I would think at least 100 years in my family.”

Scrutinising the fascinating object, the valuer noted the piece was likely to be from the 16th-18th Centuries.

“Once upon a time it would have been taller, it would have had a lotus throne,” he continued. “It’s a lovely thing to have, I think you’re very lucky indeed.

“And it is fairly valuable, I think a figure like this in auction today is in excess of £60,000,” the valuer added.

Experiencing a surprising reaction, the woman said slowly: “Yes, very nice. Not enough to part with!” she added with a laugh.

Antiques Roadshow continues tomorrow on BBC One.

Antiques Roadshow: Expert ‘FORBIDS’ guest from selling historical item  https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-expert-forbids-guest-from-selling-historical-item/ https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-expert-forbids-guest-from-selling-historical-item/#respond Tue, 07 May 2019 08:24:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-expert-forbids-guest-from-selling-historical-item/

Antiques Roadshow headed to Newcastle this weekend when the town gathered at the Civic Centre with their antiques hoping to earn a pretty penny or two.

During the episode, viewers saw expert Paul Atterbury look at an original ribbon from a ship and after revealing the story behind the item, he advisedthe owner to keep hold of it.

The guest began explaining: “This is the ribbon of the Mauretania which the Duchess of Roxburgh actually smashed the champagne bottle on the launch to send it down the slipway [into the Tyne].

“And it was handed down to me, from my father who was the managing director of Swan Hunter’s, who was handed it down from the managing director of Wigwam Richardson, which actually built the ship itself.”

Adding to the context, Paul said: “In 1906, it’s launched. It went right through into the ‘30s as a really popular ship and indeed when it was replaced, it was another Mauretania. The name carried on. It was a ship with an amazingly long and successful career but it was also a record-breaker.”

“It certainly was,” the owner clarified. “It held the record for 20 years of the Blue Riband which is, of course, crossing the Atlantic east to west.

“The fastest crossing?” Paul enquired and the gentleman continued: “The fastest crossing, and it held it both ways for 20 years which is unheard of.”

“It’s of a great rarity. It’s something that has got a wonderful story, very clear, right back to the roots and it’s a ship that remained perennially popular and so it has a market today. Everybody knows the Mauretania.”

And those at home then saw Paul reveal the value of the item, he said: “So I think that ribbon is going to be about £2,000.”

“Well, we’ll never sell it because obviously, it’s going to be handed down through the family,” the guest explained.

“You can’t sell it,” Paul remarked understandably and then joked: “I forbid you to do it!”

It comes after viewers saw another expert stunned when she found out the owner had been wearing a valuable brooch.

During an episode last month when Antiques Roadshow went to Halifax, Susan Rumfitt was the expert looking over an item of jewellery.

Discussing the Victoria item, Susan explained how the “intricate and delicate” design set the bar high for valuation.

She revealed the piece to be worth £2,000 at auction which the owner seem pleased about.

That was until she explained how she had worn it as fancy dress to a recent party.

Viewers saw Susan’s mouth drop open in astonishment at the admission and told the owner not to do that in the future.

Elsewhere in the episode, BBC fans saw an item originally worth £10, fetch a really high price tag.

The water-dropper which originated from 17th Century China was bought by the lady in Tynemouth around 35 years ago.

At the time, the price she paid for the item was quite high but not in comparison to what it would fetch in today’s market.

Antiques Roadshow returns next Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.

Emmerdale spoilers: Rishi Sharma distracts viewers with SAUCY item – did you spot it? https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-rishi-sharma-distracts-viewers-with-saucy-item-did-you-spot-it/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-rishi-sharma-distracts-viewers-with-saucy-item-did-you-spot-it/#respond Thu, 21 Feb 2019 01:20:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-rishi-sharma-distracts-viewers-with-saucy-item-did-you-spot-it/

Emmerdale viewers were left in hysterics earlier this evening when once scene saw Rishi Sharma (played by Bhasker Patel) with a plastic doll.

In a scene which was placed in the sweet factory, doctor Manpreet Jutla (Rebecca Sarker) was seen walking into the office with a mannequin.

Handing it over to Rishi she said: “This is Jolene,” to which Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) interjected and joked: “Didn’t you buy one of those when mum left?”

“Uh, behave!” Rishi reprimanded much to the amusement of his girlfriend Manpreet before adding: “Jolene performs a very important function.”

“Mmm, well we won’t go into that now,” Jai continued insinuating.

Explaining what she was doing with the mannequin, Manpreet said: “Jolene is the key to saving lives.

“By the end of the week, your staff will know how to perform CPR and how to operate a defibrillator.”

The camera then cut to Rishi and Jai who were standing side by side, and viewers saw Rishi looking intently at the dolly and swaying it like a baby.

Those who had tuned in to watch the ITV soap, thought the scene was hilarious and took to Twitter to discuss.

One said: “Ew Jai, don’t make a sex doll joke in front of your dad #Emmerdale.”

“I don’t think that’s what Dolly Parton had in mind when she wrote Jolene! #Emmerdale,” another commented.

A third remarked: “Hahah loving the scenes with Rishi tonight #Emmerdale.”

It comes after Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) and Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) forbidden affair could be exposed.

During another scene in tonight’s episode, Ellis Chapman (Asan N’jie) was seen in David’s shop buying a smoothie when David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) came down from upstairs carrying stock and said: “Oh sorry mate. Eugh, beetroot and kale.”

“You should have your Jacob on these, it might give him the energy to send him to hockey practice more,” Ellis remarked.

But David hit back with: “I don’t know what you’re talking about he’s always at hockey practice, £2 please.”

Does Ellis’ comment suggest some suspicion about how Jacob spends to choose his time and could this lead to David questioning his son about what Ellis meant?

Nevertheless, in upcoming episodes Maya and Jacob are going to take their relationship to the next level.

Next week, the teen turns 16 and to celebrate, Maya suggests the two of them spend some quality time together, alone.

Seizing the opportunity, Jacob goes to the summerhouse and romantically decorates it, with the intent on them spending the night together.

However, Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) starts to get suspicious and worries her boyfriend is starting to regret their relationship.

In a bid to find out, she ends up at the summerhouse and questions what he is doing.

How will Maya react when their special evening is ruined by her seeing Jacob with Liv?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV.

Hand luggage: Always pack this one item in your baggage to beat Ryanair’s strict rules https://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-item-in-your-baggage-to-beat-ryanairs-strict-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-item-in-your-baggage-to-beat-ryanairs-strict-rules/#respond Sat, 02 Feb 2019 11:50:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-item-in-your-baggage-to-beat-ryanairs-strict-rules/

Flights with stringent hand luggage rules can be highly frustrating for holidaymakers – and Ryanair in particular has made its rules even more restrictive. Strict regulations mean careful planning is required when packing cabin bags. The key is to pack as lightly as possible and to take items that will prove highly versatile. Travel expert Adam Ewart, CEO of luggage delivery business Send My Bag, has revealed one key piece of luggage you should pack.

It’s important the clothing you’re taking on holiday is both versatile and low maintenance. This is crucial if packing light.

One very useful item – especially if you’re going to a warm destination – is a sarong.

“A sarong is great for a hot day but can also be used as a changing room at the beach,” Adam told Express.co.uk.

Further uses include: “A tablecloth for a picnic, a scarf if you’re chilly, a makeshift satchel for your souvenirs, a pillow when you’re weary, a head scarf to protect you from the sun… the list goes on. Be inventive and pack multiple-use items.”

The fabric of your clothing could make all the difference when packing for a budget airline flight.

“Consider the fabric of the clothing you’re taking and factor in its quality, thickness, weight, and texture,” Adam said.

“Try and whittle your selection down where possible to clothing that is durable, light, and isn’t bulky.

“Synthetic materials are often better than cotton because they’re lighter, smaller and they dry faster.”

In a further bid to be versatile, make sure you take clothes that go with each other.

“Think carefully about the different colours of clothing you’re taking with you,” Adam advised.

“Choose options which are compatible with a number of other colours, reducing the number of clothes you will need to bring along and increasing the variety of outfits you can make. The extra 10 minutes of outfit planning is always worth it.”

The way you physically pack the items you’re taking in your bag will also make all the difference.

“Rolling your clothes (not folding!) is a great way to maximise the space in your bag,” said Adam.

“Use the same principle with your socks and underwear and then tuck them inside your shoes. These techniques will save you space in the rest of your bag.”

A very useful packing technique has been revealed by Bag company Trakkle. The method is called the ‘overnight burrito’ as it sees the traveller tightly packing enough stuff needed for one night in a nifty burrito style.

In the video, the demonstrator successfully packs a T-shirt, underwear, a pair of socks, a charger and a toothbrush.

Hand luggage: Always pack this one simple item in your bag to help you sleep on a plane https://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-simple-item-in-your-bag-to-help-you-sleep-on-a-plane/ https://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-simple-item-in-your-bag-to-help-you-sleep-on-a-plane/#respond Thu, 10 Jan 2019 08:08:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-simple-item-in-your-bag-to-help-you-sleep-on-a-plane/

Flights for many plane passengers are a chance to catch up on sleep ahead of a holiday. But with so many noises and distractions going on in the cabin, slumber can often be hard to come by. However, by packing one simple thing in your hand luggage you might be able to fall asleep more easily. Staying warm helps people go to sleep – but this is often hard to achieve in an aircraft.

Consequently, it can be a good idea to pack a pair of extra cosy socks to help keep you warm.

“With the harsh air-conditioning on planes, it can sometimes be difficult to stay warm during your flight, so it’s important to pack some comfy and thick socks in your hand-luggage,” said sleep expert Neil Robinson from bed brand Sealy UK.

“Having warm feet helps you to drift off faster, as well as have a less restless sleep,” he added.

For the full, high-quality sleep experience, it’s worth packing two other items in your hand luggage, too.

Firstly, Neil recommends bringing an eye mask. It may not be the most sociable move if travelling with others but it will help block out unnecessary light.

“Planes are full of bright lights – from the overhead reading lights to the blue light emitted by the TV screens – which can have a negative impact on our slumber,” explained Neil.

“When we witness a light form, it stimulates a nerve pathway from the eye to the brain this stops us from feeling tired, making it harder to drift off.

“Wearing an eye mask will help to block out these lights and help you to fall asleep and stay asleep.”

Secondly, passengers are advised to pack ear plugs to fully switch off from the plane’s distractions.

“With everything from screaming children, pilot announcements and coughing passengers, there are lots of noises that can keep you from getting that all-important shut-eye,” said Neil.

“Ear plugs can help to muffle this and turn it into soothing ‘white noise.'”

Neil also recommends steering clear of any technology before you try and get some sleep.

He explained: “While it may be tempting to watch a film or read on your tablet during the flight, the blue light emitted from the screens impacts our levels of melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone.

“By avoiding technology for a minimum of 30 minutes before you’re planning to get some kip, you can help ensure a better quality sleep.”

A flight attendant has also recommended bringing a pen or pencil in your hand luggage for a flight.

She told Readers Digest: “If you’re travelling overseas, do yourself a favour and bring a pen. You would not believe how many people travel without one, and you need one to fill out the immigration forms. I carry some, but I can’t carry 200.”

People who forget to pack one could find themselves frantically asking other passengers or delayed at the airport when they haven’t filled in their form.

Kate Middleton: Duchess takes THIS favourite item with her when she travels https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-duchess-takes-this-favourite-item-with-her-when-she-travels/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-duchess-takes-this-favourite-item-with-her-when-she-travels/#respond Wed, 09 Jan 2019 19:24:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-duchess-takes-this-favourite-item-with-her-when-she-travels/

Kate Middleton is well known for looking impeccably stylish on every public outing. No matter where she is in the world on royal tours, the Duchess of Cambridge attracts much attention for her chic look. As any traveller knows, what one wears while abroad can make or break a day out. Prince William’s wife is often seen in high heels or wedges at formal events but she also packs a practical option.

On multiple occasions – in countries across the globe – thrifty Kate has worn a pair of trusty boat shoes.

The pair of Sebago taupe suede and white Bala slip-on loafers have been frequently spotted on the Duchess’s feet.

She wore them sailing in Auckland Harbour in New Zealand, on safari at Kaziranga National Park in India and to row dragon boats on Dalvay Lake in Canada.

The 100 per cent leather shoes feature a latex foam cushion in the footbed and claim not to “compromise style for comfort.”

According to manufacturer Sebago, the loafers are “welcome footwear for lunch, errands, and just dashing around. A traction-ready outsole keeps things steady on- and offshore.”

Given Kate’s busy schedule, these versatile shoes – which can match nearly any outfit – are clearly very useful.

Kate Middleton – and her sister-in-law Meghan Markle – tend to follow a specific fashion rule when they go abroad.

They both choose to wear foreign designers from the country they are travelling to as a nod to their culture.

For instance, when Kate went to India in 2017, she wore a bohemian dress by Indian designer Anita Dongre which prompted the website to crash as many flocked to buy it.

Kate also went for Amrapali Jewels earrings during an official dinner in the country, which was a jewellery brand founded in Jaipur.

Meghan Markle has also chosen to do the same in a way to support local artists and designers.

She chose Scottish brand Strathberry for her bag and wore a tartan coat for her visit to Edinburgh in 2018, which prompted the bag seller not only to sell out but to launch a bag in her name.

An expert has revealed some of the other things Kate Middleton would have to hand when she travels.

According to Marcia Moody’s 2013 novel, ‘Kate: A Biography’, the Duchess carried some beauty items that many women often choose to have with them when she when to Canada in 2016.

She explained she had a “compact mirror, blotting paper, a handkerchief and lip balm.” While she would not use them in public, they are useful to have in private.

Blotting paper can remove oil and shine, something important when having photographs taken by the paparazzi.

Lip balm and a compact mirror would be useful to keep herself looking neat and tidy.

Flights: Flight attendants are banned from wearing a certain item during Christmas https://briefnews.eu/flights-flight-attendants-are-banned-from-wearing-a-certain-item-during-christmas/ https://briefnews.eu/flights-flight-attendants-are-banned-from-wearing-a-certain-item-during-christmas/#respond Wed, 19 Dec 2018 01:39:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flights-flight-attendants-are-banned-from-wearing-a-certain-item-during-christmas/

Flight attendants working with United Airlines have been warned against certain festive items when it comes to their uniform. A leaked memo has advised cabin crew members about what is and is not allowed to be worn. The memo advised that “accessories must be in good taste”. Express.co.uk contacted United Airlines for comment regarding the memo.

The memo explained how the items which are allowed are “adornments” such as a “conservative holiday scarf,” “conservative earrings,” or “one holiday pin”.

However, many items were also listed as banned for all members of the flight crew.

This included “head adornments” which included antlers, hates, haloes and deely bobbers. It also included “holiday jumpers,” and “holiday hosiery“ on the list of items not allowed.

This means crew must not wear ugly jumpers, tights or headgear as part of their Christmas uniform.

A spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “We have some of the most professional flight attendants in the industry.

“Every year as part of our regular communications to flight attendants we send a reminder about uniform standards.”

A United spokeswoman told news.com.au a memo is issued every year but it is unclear if the memo is current or what caused the memo to be sent out.

Other airlines are much happier to get int the festive spirit this Christmas.

A Jet2 flight from Leeds Bradford Airport saw cabin crew dress up as elves and reindeers to give children Christmas goody bags before they could meet Father Christmas.

Virgin Atlantic are also in the Christmas spirit by swapping their Vivienne Westwood designed uniforms for ugly Christmas jumpers.

The airline allowed the outfit change in support of Christmas Jumper Day last week which encourages a £2 donation for Save the Children.

Staff will wear the specially designed Virgin Atlantic Christmas jumper on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Alaska Airlines will also give something back to passengers wearing an ugly holiday jumper – they will be allowed to board early.

The airline allows the rare practice every year during Christmas.

Other airlines including Emirates offer seasonal meal options to embrace the Christmas period.

Peter Andre: The one item musician travels with in his suitcase https://briefnews.eu/peter-andre-the-one-item-musician-travels-with-in-his-suitcase/ https://briefnews.eu/peter-andre-the-one-item-musician-travels-with-in-his-suitcase/#respond Mon, 17 Dec 2018 19:57:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/peter-andre-the-one-item-musician-travels-with-in-his-suitcase/

Peter Andre has travelled a lot with his career and has strong familial ties to Cyprus and Australia. Consequently, the musician is well used to jet-setting both long and short haul and knows what he wants when he travels. Despite his fame and glamorous lifestyle, Andre reveals he still likes the simple things in life and relies on home comforts when away. And there’s one thing in particular he needs. The pop star told Express.co.uk that he’ll often pack a coffee machine in his suitcase.

Andre revealed he first got into the habit early in his career when he had a very hectic schedule and he relied on the caffeine to get him through a busy day.

“I take my coffee machine with me sometimes,” he told Express.co.uk. “I know it’s crazy.

“I’m doing it less and less now because everywhere you go has got coffee, but when I first started out I was doing a lot of travelling.

“We’d have music schedules that would be so intense and I’d have interviews back to back; I’d be so tired and I needed an espresso shot every so often. Some people need tequila, I prefer coffee.

The TV personality added: “It was one of those Nespresso machines and I used to pack them in my suitcase I’m not even kidding.”

Another crucial item to pack in your hand luggage is a travel plug, said the father-of-four.

“A travel plug is important because when you get to another country the worst thing is when there’s nowhere to plug your stuff in,” he explained.

However, Andre admitted the number one item he can’t travel without is his mobile phone.

The Harrow-born star joked the old adage of ‘testicles, spectacles, wallet and watch,’ is no longer relevant as everything these days is on your phone.

“As long as you’ve got your phone and credit card you are OK,” he said when asked about hand luggage essentials.

Katie Price’s ex-husband revealed packing is one of his least favourite parts of going away.

He said he does pack his own suitcase but his wife, Emily MacDonagh, 29, does occasionally repack his attempts at packing for his children.

“Emily is really good at the kids packing and organising the kids’ stuff,” he said.

“I try my best but Emily does what my mum would do where I would pack something and then she’d go and look at it and say “Can I just re-do it?’”

Andre’s next planned trip will be to Australia to see his parents, but he revealed his wife may be treating him to a holiday for Christmas.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “She asked me what I’d want if I went somewhere, and I said, ‘Honestly, one is to be with you, obviously, second is to have food – I don’t care what food it is or where it is, I just love food – and the third one is sleep. If I can get all of those three things I am a very happy guy.”

Travellers heading away this festive season need to be very careful not to do one thing in particular with their hand luggage.
