A video accusing Israel of testing on Palestinians the weapons and methods of repression it later exports around the world was removed from Facebook for several hours, and only restored after complaints. “Palestine is Israel’s personal laboratory for testing, refining and showcasing methods and weapons of domination and control,” says journalist Rania Khalek in a video recorded for In The NOW web show and published on Friday. After it was posted on Facebook, however, the video was “erased without explanation.” Several hours later, Facebook restored the video after “some complaints,” Khalek said. Social media giants have the ability to “disappear content as they please,” she noted, adding it is “creepy and alarming and should be loudly opposed.” This is not the first time Facebook has censored pages and content critical of Israel. Facing political pressure after the 2016 US presidential election, the social media giant has stepped up censorship across its platform, teaming up with the NATO-backed Atlantic Council. It has also often had to backtrack on decisions to suspend or remove content as “mistakes,” due to public pushback. In addition to pro-Trump bloggers Diamond and Silk, Facebook’s censorship net also entangled are an article by a pro-Democrat outfit ThinkProgress, as well as the infamous photo of French President Emmanuel Macron with half-naked gang-signing residents of St. Martin, on grounds of rules against “nudity and sexual acts.” “This is why social media giants censoring content is bad. Eventually you’ll get censored,” Khalek said in a tweet on Friday. In her video, Khalek takes aim at Israeli marketing of their military technology as “battle-tested” and “combat-proven,” arguing this means they are being used to oppress Palestinians. Not only have Israeli arms exports quadrupled between 2002 and 2017, the country is the world’s leading supplier of drones, and was even given a contract by the US to build a high-tech “virtual wall” on the US-Mexico border in 2014, according to Khalek. “When people are dying – especially under such circumstances – it is always a tragedy,” President Putin said during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Moscow on Tuesday.
Responding to a reporter’s question as to whether the incident in Latakia could be compared to the downing of the Russian Su-24 by Turkey in 2015, Putin said the two situations were “different.”
Ankara “deliberately downed” the Russian jet, he explained, while the Il-20 incident “looks like a chain of tragic circumstances, because the Israeli plane didn’t shoot down our jet.”
Russia will investigate the incident, Putin said, adding that Moscow will boost security of Russian troops in Syria following the incident.
Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told TASS that the president is likely to hold phone talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later on Tuesday.

The harsh statements by the Israeli PM, who was speaking at a graduation ceremony for naval officers on Wednesday, were referring to the recent Houthi attack on a Saudi oil tanker off Yemen’s western coast. The Saudi-led coalition has repeatedly said the Houthis are armed and supported by Iran, but both the group and Tehran deny the claims.
Yet, Netanyahu branded the incident “a sharp clash with Iran’s satellites who tried to sabotage international shipping” at the mouth of the Red Sea. The Saudi-led coalition insists that its oil tanker was attacked by the Houthis in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait located between Yemen and Eritrea and Djibouti on the Arabian Peninsula.
Nobody was injured and the damage posed no threat to the environment.
“If Iran tries to block the Straits of Bab al-Mandab, it will find itself facing an international coalition determined to prevent it from doing so, and this coalition will also include the State of Israel and all its arms,” Netanyahu warned.
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman backed Netanyahu’s statements on Tehran, saying that “recently, we have heard of threats to harm Israeli ships in the Red Sea.” Speaking at the same ceremony he promised that the Israeli military is ready “to respond simultaneously on two fronts, and also on the Red Sea.”
“Only in that case we would be less selective and the harm to our enemies would be greater. I hope they take that into account,” he added.
The Saudi-led coalition has been waging a military campaign against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015, in an attempt to put the ousted Yemeni president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi back in power. The intervention and blockade of the country has contributed to a massive humanitarian disaster. Since the start of the campaign, the coalition has been accused by human rights groups and activists of killing thousands of civilians but it has rarely accepted responsibility.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital Sanaa and large parts in the north of the country, have been occasionally targeting Saudi oil facilities. In April, a Saudi oil tanker was also struck by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, west of Yemen’s Hodeidah. The vessel sustained “minor damage” and continued on its route.

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Tel Aviv chanting: “Full equality and no less,” “Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies” and “The nation bill is a disaster,” according to witnesses.
“The Nation-State Law would turn racism, discrimination, and segregation into an inescapable part of our lives. More than that – racism and discrimination are becoming desired and central in the State of Israel. The Nation-State Law will bring exclusion and damage to minorities to terrifying levels we have never seen before. Our stance is clear: all citizens –all– are equal,” the organizers of the rally stated, as cited by the Jerusalem Post.

Between 2,500 and 7,000 people took part in the rally, according to various Israeli media reports. The demonstration was organized by a wide range of NGOs, rights groups and at least four Israeli political parties. The march was reportedly led by some members of the Knesset – the Israeli parliament.
The bill in question, which is currently being debated in the Knesset and is expected to come to a final vote on Monday, declares Israel the nation-state of the Jewish people. Opponents of the controversial legislation say it would prioritize Jewish values over democratic ones and effectively endanger the rights of Israeli Arab citizens as well as even secular Israelis.

One of the most controversial clauses of the new bill envisages the establishment of settlements or communities that are segregated by religion or nationality. “The state may allow a community, including members of one religion or of one nationality, to maintain a separate communal settlement,” the provision says, according to the Jerusalem Post. This particular clause even drew criticism from Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, however, actively supports the legislation.

“The law of division and discrimination that this government is promoting – which they call the Nation-State Bill – will leave a great many of us out; out of towns with “admission committees; out of fair treatment in the courts; out of citizenship; out of democracy. To this, we will not agree,” the groups participating in the rally said in a statement.
The controversial bill also drew criticism from abroad, particularly from US Jews: 14 American Jewish organizations expressed their concerns over the legislation to the incoming Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac Herzog, who is also the opposition leader in the Knesset.
Some of these groups, such as the New Israel Fund, also took part in Saturday’s rally. “This is tribalism at its worst,” the New Israel Fund CEO Daniel Sokatch told Haaretz. “Beginning with Israel’s Declaration of Independence, the Jewish value of human dignity and the principle of the equality of all people have formed the democratic foundation of the state. This law is completely incompatible with those values,” he added.
Meanwhile, if adopted, the nation-state law would acquire the status of a “basic” law, which gives it a power equal to the constitution (even though Israel does not have a written one). “If racism, sexism, and religious fundamentalism are to be protected in Israel’s basic laws, it should be no surprise when the country embodies those values. This bill and the government that supported it are a danger to Israel’s future,” Sokatch, who even wrote a piece on the issue for the San Diego Jewish World media outlet, warned.
Others were seemingly also concerned over Israel’s international reputation. Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, particularly warned that adoption of the bill would “make Israel an open target on the world stage for all those who seek to deny the Jewish people our right to a homeland.”
The news comes just days after the Irish Senate, the upper house of parliament, supported a bill that makes it illegal to import goods produced in the illegal Israeli settlements built on the Occupied Territories in the West Bank. The move prompted the Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman to call for Israel’s embassy in Ireland to be closed “immediately.”

A French employee of France’s consulate in Jerusalem has been arrested for allegedly smuggling dozens of weapons from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank, Israel’s domestic security agency said Monday. The Shin Bet said the man, identified as Romain Franck, 23, was part of a broader Palestinian smuggling ring, AP reported. He allegedly used his consular vehicle, which is subjected to less stringent security checks, as cover to transport the weapons through Israel’s secured border with the Gaza Strip. The Shin Bet accused Franck of taking part in the ring for financial gain, saying his employer was unaware of his actions. The consulate in Jerusalem declined to comment and did not confirm whether Franck was an employee.
]]>Tamimi’s case is far from an isolated one. According to B’Tselem (the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories), at the end of 2017 there were 352 Palestinian minors being held in Israeli prisons.
This trend has risen dramatically since 2014. In December of that year there were 156 child prisoners, by the end of 2015 this figure had jumped to 450 before being reduced by 98 at the end of 2017.
To learn more about these arrests, and the manner in which they are carried out, RT spoke to Palestinian photojournalist Mohammad Al-Azza. Al-Azza lives and works in the Aida refugee camp located about 2km north of Bethlehem. He documents the almost daily incursions into the camp by IDF soldiers, who routinely fire tear gas and rubber bullets, which are essentially live rounds encased in hard plastic, at children and adults there.
Al-Azza has been shot at more than once for simply doing his job. In 2013, he was shot by an IDF soldier, with a ‘rubber bullet’ lodging itself in his face just below his right eye. He sustained serious injuries which resulted in him having to undergo reconstructive surgery.
WARNING: Some readers may find these images distressing.
About 5,500 people live in the camp, half of whom are children. According to Mohammad, a disproportionate number of youngsters are arrested compared to adults. The Palestinian human rights association Addameer believes this seems to be a systematic approach by the Israeli government.
“Such events and arrests have become increasingly common since October 2015,” Addameer said in January. “It is safe to say that the trend in child arrests is distinctly upwards… we have actually seen a decrease in the overall prison population, but seen a vast increase in the number of children being held.”
Pre-dawn raids are a frequently used tactic of the IDF, which sees heavily armed soldiers kick down the doors of Palestinian homes and pull terrified children from their beds under the cover of darkness before locking them up, sometimes for months at a time.
Al-Azza illustrates the wider picture by recounting the arrest of two brothers, one 12 and the other 14. These boys are, like most child prisoners, taken from their homes in the dead of night.
“These kids were terrified, they were crying, and their parents were asking the army if they could accompany them to the barracks, and the army refused even this request,” Al-Azza told RT.
Following their release, the boys recounted their ordeal to Al-Azza: “They [IDF troops] were shouting at them, they put them in handcuffs, covered their eyes. They were treating them as if they were adults. There is no difference between children and adults in their [IDF] eyes.”
“Throughout the interrogation they are asking them about demonstrations, if they were participating in protests against the army. And when the kids say ‘no’ they scare them in various ways. Shouting at them, telling them they have photos of them that kind of thing, hitting them. So the kids confess to things they have never done just so the abuse stops,” Al-Azza said. “In the end the boys were charged with throwing stones and sentenced to three months in prison each.”
Unfortunately, those are the lucky ones. In January of this year, four children were shot dead by the IDF. Al-Azza recounts the last time a child, Abed al-Rahman, was killed in the Aida refugee camp.
“The last child was killed in front of my eyes. To say there is a strong reason for the army to use live ammunition, there is no way at all to say that. There is no reason at all. The last boy (Abed al-Rahman) that was killed, in October 2015, was standing right next to the UN office in the camp. There were no soldiers at all in the street, they were in the watchtower about 200 metres away. Suddenly I heard three shots, the first hit the street, the second hit another boy in the leg and the third hit Abdel in the heart and he died instantly.”
Al-Azza told RT that he believes this was far from being an accident. “I have a photo of the soldiers who shot him and I gave it to the UN… he wasn’t using the standard issue M-16 he was using a sniping gun, he knows very well what he is doing. There was no danger whatsoever to this soldiers live to make him use live bullets and this is not the first case in the camp, this happens all over Palestine.”
In a letter to Human Rights Watch (HRW) in 2015 regarding the arrest of minors, the Israeli military claimed that: “All the relevant authorities act in accordance with the law and standing operational instructions, whilst ensuring that the suspect is provided with all the necessary rights and safeguards.”
Killings like that of Abed al-Rahman, according to Mohammad, contradict the military’s claims and leave the Palestinian people feeling powerless. They take to the streets in protest, imploring the UN to do something, but with little success. “The Israelis, they know that in the end no one is going to stop them,” Al-Azza says.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the US would move its embassy to Jerusalem “within the year.”
Netanyahu’s comments came during a state visit to India, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. He told reporters traveling with him that the move was part of US policy changes that had “never happened before.”
According to Haaretz, Netanyahu based his remarks on a “solid assessment,” but declined to provide further details.
Netanyahu added that several of US President Donald Trump’s policy decisions, including his opposition to the Iranian nuclear deal and the US’ decision to withhold $ 65 million in aid to Palestinian organizations were part of policies that were geared toward strengthened relations between the US and Israel.
The Prime Minister’s statements conflict with previous assertions made by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who last month said the US embassy would not move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem for at least three years or more.
The US made the decision to move the embassy last month after Trump declared his support for naming Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced he would order the relocation of the US embassy as a goodwill gesture to Israel.
Trump’s controversial decision has caused outrage across the world. Arab countries decried the decision, and said that the US had created a “death sentence” for peace, while the United Nations voted overwhelmingly to condemn the decision.
On Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas railed against the US’ Middle East policy. Abbas said that Trump’s actions were a “slap in the face” to his people. He promised that the Palestinians would “slap back.”

Speaking at the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Central Council meeting on Sunday, Abbas lashed out at US President Donald Trump, denouncing his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and a reported proposal by Washington to make a tiny West Bank village a future Palestinian capital.
“We told Trump we will never accept his [peace] plan. His ‘deal of the century’ is the slap in the face of the century, and we will not accept it,” Abbas said, vowing to “slap back,” as cited by Arutz Sheva.
The Palestine Authority (PA) will reject any further peace talks if they are spearheaded by the US, Abbas stressed, branding David Friedman, the US ambassador to Israel, “a settler” and “an offensive human being” with whom he has refused to meet.
“Any future negotiations will take place only within the context of the international community, by an international committee created in the framework of an international conference,” he stressed, according to Haaretz.
A former Hamas official revealed back in December that the US administration had proposed making the 12,000-dweller West Bank village of Abu Dis, which borders Jerusalem, a future Palestinian capital instead of East Jerusalem. The same proposal was reportedly voiced by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman during his meeting with Abbas in November, sparking anger among Palestinians.
Abbas has also slammed Trump for threatening to halt aid to the Palestinians in a recent tweet, in which the US leader claimed he took the issue of Jerusalem “off the table” and accused Palestinians of “no longer willing to talk peace.”
Noting that “nothing is more important than Jerusalem” Abbas stated that he was stunned by the remark claiming that the negotiations have never got going.

“I saw his tweet which said that ‘We will not give aid to the Palestinians because they refuse to relaunch negotiations… When did you offer me this? On the phone? On television? When the hell did negotiations start?!” he wondered.
Trump is slated to follow through on his threats by drastically cutting the US contribution to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, AP reported on Sunday, citing unnamed US officials. According to the report, the US is set to channel just $ 60 million instead of the planned $ 125 million to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Washington could potentially scrap funding entirely, the officials said, if preconditions set by the US for further transfers are not met. Among the demands, that might be put forward by Washington, is the revival of Palestinian-Israeli talks. The US State Department has neither confirmed or denied the move, saying “there are still deliberations taking place.”
Since the 1993 Oslo Accords, the US has been among the major donors to the PA, created to manage limited self-governance in parts of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The milestone agreement included Israel and PLO letters of mutual recognition.
Arguing that Israel has been undermining the agreement, Abbas signaled the Palestinians might quit the Accords, while declaring its effectively null and void during his fiery speech.
“Today is the day that the Oslo Accords end,” he said. “Israel killed them.”

Palestinian authorities have condemned the planned construction of new housing units in East Jerusalem as an “Israeli colonial dare,” encouraged by Washington’s controversial recognition of the Holy City as Israel’s capital.
On Sunday, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates denounced the plan to construct 300 new housing units in the occupied part of Jerusalem. The plan is “part of Israel’s colonial and expansionist projects implemented by the Israeli government encouraged by the latest announcement of US President Donald Trump’s to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” the ministry said. Israel’s Construction and Housing Minister Yoav Galant allegedly advocated for the scheme.
The Palestinian ministry said the “Israeli colonial dare” would not have happened was it not for Trump’s controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem “as the capital of the occupying power.” The statement added that Palestinian authorities would hold the American president and his administration personally responsible “for any crimes” that might stem from Israel’s “expansionist” move.
The alleged “aggressive” settlement plans under the so-called Greater Jerusalem bill have also been condemned by the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Department of Jerusalem Affairs. It noted that the construction project aims to fragment the “geographical and demographic unity” of Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian WAFA news agency.
While Israel has yet to officially announce new settlement construction, Israeli media reported Sunday that the Planning and Building Committee of the Jerusalem Municipality would review new construction plans Monday, despite Washington’s request to temporarily “calm down” the construction boom.
The Holy City’s authorities plan to approve 277 new housing units comprising eight buildings in three areas of Gilo, an Israeli settlement in southwestern East Jerusalem, according to an Israeli Channel 13 report.
The construction of some of units already began a year ago, Channel 2 said, adding, that six of the permits that are expected to be granted Monday will be awarded retroactively. Three other permits due for approval will reportedly be an extension of licenses approved last year.
The US recognition of Jerusalem apparently encouraged Israel’s expansionist policies, such as the Greater Jerusalem bill, condemned by the Palestinians Sunday. The measure, being debated in the Knesset, seeks to change the fragile social structure of Jerusalem, by making the Holy City predominantly Jewish. If approved, Israel will immediately absorb nineteen West Bank settlements into Jerusalem’s borders and thus relegate the status of some Palestinian neighbourhoods of East Jerusalem to sub-municipalities.
The dispute over Jerusalem dates back to 1947, when a UN partition plan called for the creation of two independent states for Jews and Palestinians. The city of Jerusalem, which is holy for Christians, Muslims and Jews, was to be given special international status. However, the plan was never implemented, as war broke out in the region. Israel seized East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War with Arab states and declared the entire city its undivided capital in 1980.The US embassy, as well as other foreign missions, are currently located in Tel Aviv, Israel’s economic and diplomatic capital.
