Members of Ontario’s outgoing science table say they would have advised against the province’s decision to scrap COVID-19 isolation requirements if they were consulted on the move.

Susanna Reid furious as Ashworth refuses to comment on Ferguson breaking isolation rules https://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-furious-as-ashworth-refuses-to-comment-on-ferguson-breaking-isolation-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-furious-as-ashworth-refuses-to-comment-on-ferguson-breaking-isolation-rules/#respond Wed, 06 May 2020 08:01:09 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-furious-as-ashworth-refuses-to-comment-on-ferguson-breaking-isolation-rules/

Yesterday, Professor Ferguson announced he had “made an error of judgement” and was stepping down from his government role and involvement in Sage (Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) after it was reported he had broken lockdown rules to meet with his girlfriend. Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid spoke to Jonathan Ashworth about the news and asked if the public could still trust the government’s advice but the politician wasn’t keen to comment on Professor Ferguson’s decision.

Reid began: “Jonathan Ashworth, we are constantly being told we should follow the science.

“But you have already mentioned on testing, we don’t seem to have followed the science, we’re not consistently up to the number of tests the Health Secretary promised, even though we got there by hook or by crook on one day at least, it has continued in that way.

“Let me take you to two other instances. Firstly we’ve got Professor Ferguson, Professor lockdown, the guy who urged the government to lockdown and said hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved if we go into lockdown.

“Undoubtedly lives have been saved but then that scientist himself is accused, and even admits to having broken those lockdown rules because the woman who is said to be his girlfriend made two visits to his home when those strict social distancing measures were in place.

“But we also have the fact that the scientific committee that he has now stepped down from, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, on the sam day that the Prime Minister told a Number 10 press conference that he was still shaking the hands of people he met including at a hospital where there were Covid patients.

“The scientists on that committee had urged an end to handshaking.

“I mean, are the politicians not even following the science, and the scientists not even following the science?

“I think there is a real issue at the moment with public trust and what we are being told.”

Ashworth commented: “Well, I completely understand that, I just don’t want to get into the personal details of what goes on in that individual’s private life because it’s not for me.

“But you are right, we should be following the advice.”

Also in the interview, Reid asked for Ashworth’s opinion on Matt Hancock telling Dr Rosena Allin-Khan to “watch her tone” in a clash in the House of Commons yesterday.

“The politician who got the tone wrong was Matt Hancock and he should graciously apologise to Rosena,” Ashworth told the hosts.

“Rosena is not only a brilliant political and Shadow Health Minister, she’s also an A&E doctor on the frontline and what she was bringing to the House of Commons yesterday was her direct experience of NHS staff on the frontline as they are dealing with this horrific disease that is Covid-19.

“And, remember, the NHS staff on the frontline are putting themselves at risk to care for us and our loved ones.

“So yes, you know, putting tough questions to ministers is what we’re supposed to do and she shouldn’t be criticised or dismissed for that.

“Matt Hancock should be thanking her for all she is doing on the frontline and for the NHS.”

Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Wife Hilarie Burton to Host AMC’s Chatty Friday Night In From Isolation https://briefnews.eu/walking-deads-jeffrey-dean-morgan-and-wife-hilarie-burton-to-host-amcs-chatty-friday-night-in-from-isolation/ https://briefnews.eu/walking-deads-jeffrey-dean-morgan-and-wife-hilarie-burton-to-host-amcs-chatty-friday-night-in-from-isolation/#respond Fri, 10 Apr 2020 21:10:52 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/walking-deads-jeffrey-dean-morgan-and-wife-hilarie-burton-to-host-amcs-chatty-friday-night-in-from-isolation/ Of all people, The Walking Dead’s Negan is going to bring us together in this time of social distancing. AMC announced Friday that the reformed villain’s portrayer, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and wife Hilarie Burton (One Tree Hill) are hosting a new series, Friday Night In With the Morgans, premiering Friday, April 17, at 10/9c.

In each episode, the couple, tucked away safely at their Mischief Farm in upstate New York, will steer conversations via video-chat about how they and their guests are coping with and helping out during this strange period of life in isolation. Among those shooting the breeze will be Walking Dead cast members past (Sarah Wayne Callies) and present (Christian Serratos), actor-director Mark Duplass (HBO’s Room 104) and Morgan’s Supernatural pals Jensen and Danneel Ackles, who actually introduced the Morgans to one another.

Jeffrey dean morgan Friday night in with the morgans amc series“We have been a part of the AMC family for a long time and are honored to create this comforting space with them,” the marrieds said in a statement. “We look forward to shining a light on those who are doing good in the world, catching up with old friends and connecting with the awesome fan base we’ve gotten to know over the years.”

For AMC’s part, “we loved the idea of experimenting” with the couple, said Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks’ Entertainment Group and AMC Studios. “And this really will be an experiment — it’s the antidote to the overly rehearsed, overly manicured glimpse into somebody’s perfect life… Ultimately, it’s a shot at some raw and real entertainment that will uplift and connect with our audiences.”

'We can't use Korean names': Japan's large pro-Pyongyang diaspora lives amid suspicion & isolation https://briefnews.eu/we-cant-use-korean-names-japans-large-pro-pyongyang-diaspora-lives-amid-suspicion-isolation/ https://briefnews.eu/we-cant-use-korean-names-japans-large-pro-pyongyang-diaspora-lives-amid-suspicion-isolation/#respond Wed, 01 Aug 2018 00:19:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-cant-use-korean-names-japans-large-pro-pyongyang-diaspora-lives-amid-suspicion-isolation/

Thousands of ethnic Koreans living in Japan pledge loyalty to Pyongyang. Many of them have never actually been in North Korea but, against all odds, still consider its leaders as their own and the communist country as homeland.

About 150,000 Japanese Koreans remain loyal to Pyongyang, which makes up around a quarter of the local Korean diaspora, the new documentary produced by Berlin-based Redfish Media reports. They call themselves “Joseon Koreans,” using the old medieval name of undivided Korea.

Despite living in the heart of Japanese capitalist society, the community strongly identifies with North Korea and praises its leaders. “We feel close to them. We are united, and they stand united with us,” 95-year-old Mr. Baik explains. “[We’re standing] together, always together.”

Baik and ethnic Koreans like him cherish their roots, keep North’s flags and memorabilia, and enjoy listening to communist songs and anthems. They have been living in Japan since the beginning of the 20th century, when Korea was proclaimed a Japanese colony and later liberated by allied armies during WWII. Korean expats were subsequently stripped of their Japanese citizenship. When the citizenship was restored, many refused to accept it. The only thing they rely on is the support from the North, which funds their schools and cultural institutions.

The North’s sympathizers continue living under constant suspicion and mistrust from the Japanese government. They are also targeted and harassed by the local nationalists. “They say things like ‘go back to your country’ and ‘you Korean cockroaches,'” recalls Kim Song Myong, a 24-year-old student activist. “They say things like ‘kill all Koreans, good and bad.’ When we hear this, we feel very intimidated and can’t even use our real Korean names.”

#ReconnectJulian: Fmr intelligence officers & whistleblowers urge Ecuador to end Assange isolation https://briefnews.eu/reconnectjulian-fmr-intelligence-officers-whistleblowers-urge-ecuador-to-end-assange-isolation/ https://briefnews.eu/reconnectjulian-fmr-intelligence-officers-whistleblowers-urge-ecuador-to-end-assange-isolation/#respond Sat, 07 Apr 2018 02:57:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/reconnectjulian-fmr-intelligence-officers-whistleblowers-urge-ecuador-to-end-assange-isolation/ WikiLeaks supporters are calling on Ecuador’s government to restore Julian Assange’s communication privileges, arguing that jamming his phone and internet access violates his rights, a former CIA officer and whistleblower told RT.

In late March the government of Ecuador decided to cut off Julian Assange from the outside world by blocking his phone and internet access, over the WikiLeaks editor’s tweets in support of Catalonian independence from Spain. The move sparked massive outrage from Assange supporters, who view the action as a violation of free speech. Earlier this week, a group of WikiLeaks activists delivered a letter to the Ecuadorian government, urging the country’s authorities to restore Assange’s access to the outside world.

The signatories of the letter are “all intelligence professionals, diplomats, military officers, FBI agents,” John Kiriakou, the former CIA analyst who delivered the letter, told RT. “We understand the background to this case. We also understand how important transparency is, and freedom of speech and freedom of the press. We wanted the Ecuadorian government to know that.”

For months the Ecuadorian foreign ministry had been asking Assange to stop making statements that could affect Ecuador’s diplomatic relations with Spain. The whistleblower, who was granted Ecuadorian citizenship last year, refused and continued expressing support for Barcelona and former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, and for their independence row with Madrid.

In late March, Quito eventually took punitive measures, installing jamming devices across its embassy in London, which has been sheltering Assange since 2012. WikiLeaks advocates found Ecuador’s actions disproportionate to the ‘offense’ committed by Assange.

“Is that how you treat your own citizens and your own diplomats?” Kiriakou wondered. “Now if they had a problem with something Julian had tweeted, apparently they do have a such a problem, then they should punish him, I suppose, in a way commensurate with what it was that he did. He issued one tweet. I think this is going a bit overboard in response.”

To remedy the situation, the loyal supporters of Assange have staged internet #ReconnectJulian ‘vigils’ trying to muster enough support to have the whistleblower’s rights restored. They have also launched an online petition, which gathered nearly 50,000 signatures, urging the Latin American government to end “Assange’s isolation.”

Kiriakou, however, believes Quito had no choice and was forced to cut off Assange from the rest of the world due to a massive pressure by the United States and its allies. “It tells you really how powerful the United States is, I think, and how seriously they are taking this issue,” the former CIA officer said. “I’m sure the Ecuadorian government is under great pressure from the United States, from the United Kingdom, perhaps from Sweden, maybe even Australia.”

“I have no doubt that the US has strongly pressured the British government to make sure that Julian is not going to be able to walk out of that embassy unfettered. And I believe that, at the same time, Julian has probably been indicted in the United States,” he added, wondering if Ecuador’s financial interests might outweigh the country’s interests to protect Assange and the freedom of the press.

“I believe that if he does leave the embassy, the British authorities will grab him and extradite him to the United States.”

Six People Just Completed A NASA Isolation Experiment And Emerged To The Dumpster Fire That Is 2017 https://briefnews.eu/six-people-just-completed-a-nasa-isolation-experiment-and-emerged-to-the-dumpster-fire-that-is-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/six-people-just-completed-a-nasa-isolation-experiment-and-emerged-to-the-dumpster-fire-that-is-2017/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 08:25:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/six-people-just-completed-a-nasa-isolation-experiment-and-emerged-to-the-dumpster-fire-that-is-2017/

The eight-month study, known as the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, was the fifth of its kind, funded by NASA and run through the University of Hawaii.

Still, Ehrlich said, “it’s weird—you’re living inside this habitat for eight months.”

“So you’ve basically been in a place for three-quarters of a year, and you come outside and that finally feels real to you,” he explained. “Like, oh man, it’s the middle of September, you got the holidays coming up. You got bills and plans to figure out. It’s a big reality check.”

In order to learn what was happening back home, the crew was allowed to request news about certain topics; mission support would then send a screenshot of a related article, but never links.

Just like in space, there was a 20-minute delay before communications were transmitted. The crew also couldn’t access Google, so most of their new information came from following Wikipedia’s current events or looking at mission-related websites, Ehrlich said.

Ehrlich described himself as someone who likes to keep up with US and international news, and said he kept up the habit while living in the dome — possibly more than he should have. He is originally from Hollywood, Florida, he added, and was constantly checking the National Hurricane website for updates during Irma.

“You want to just do everything,” Ehrlich said about finally getting to leave the dome. “It’s as if you won a million dollars.”

“It’s really fun to be outside,” he said. “In fact, I don’t want to be inside.”

Making moms everywhere proud, Ehrlich admitted that he called his mother and grandma as soon as he got out of the dome. “I wanted to hear their voices,” he said, adding that he also called his girlfriend “and it was awesome to hear her.”

Mars simulators set for ‘return to Earth’ after 8 months in isolation https://briefnews.eu/mars-simulators-set-for-return-to-earth-after-8-months-in-isolation/ https://briefnews.eu/mars-simulators-set-for-return-to-earth-after-8-months-in-isolation/#respond Sat, 16 Sep 2017 18:43:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mars-simulators-set-for-return-to-earth-after-8-months-in-isolation/

Six crew members who spent eight months in isolation on a remote Hawaiian volcano – one of the world’s largest active volcanoes – will emerge from their Mars-esque habitat and return to Earth on Sunday.

The experiment was specially designed to replicate conditions on Mars, and to test the social and psychological effects a real manned mission to the red planet would pose to humans.

The research subjects, two men and four women, were cooped up in a small 1,200 square-foot (111-square meter) dome, except for excursions to explore the simulated Martian landscape.

Throughout the mission, crew members had to follow protocols simulating their life on Earth’s closest planetary neighbor, including eating “shelf-stable” food fit for space travel and donning astronaut suits when leaving their living quarters.

All communications to the team were subject to a 20-minute delay, the time it would take messages to travel from Earth to Mars.

Crew members wore sensors to gauge their moods and proximity to others. Among the sensor’s functions was monitoring the crew’s voice levels and detecting whether people were avoiding one another.

This is the fifth such mission undertaken by the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), based at the University of Hawaii. NASA has earmarked roughly $ 2.5 million for studies at the facility.

“This is our fifth mission, and we have learned a lot over those five missions. We’ve learned, for one thing, that conflict, even in the best of teams, is going to arise,” project lead investigator Kim Binsted said, according to AP.

“So what’s really important is to have a crew that, both as individuals and a group, is really resilient, is able to look at that conflict and come back from it,” she added.

It is hoped that the data gathered, and the insights of the crew members, will be used by NASA to select astronauts for a manned mission to Mars, hopefully by the 2030s.

Crew member Laura Lark thinks this is a realistic goal for the space agency.

“Long term space travel is absolutely possible. There are certainly technical challenges to be overcome. There are certainly human factors to be figured out, that’s part of what HI-SEAS is for. But I think that overcoming those challenges is just a matter of effort. We are absolutely capable of it,” she said from within the dome.

The university is currently making plans for a sixth mission, the last one funded by NASA.

Retirement properties to fight isolation in ready-made communities https://briefnews.eu/retirement-properties-to-fight-isolation-in-ready-made-communities/ https://briefnews.eu/retirement-properties-to-fight-isolation-in-ready-made-communities/#respond Fri, 12 May 2017 07:35:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/retirement-properties-to-fight-isolation-in-ready-made-communities/

In fact some retirement specialists go out of their way to encourage a connection with the wider community.

For instance, managers at Churchill Retirement Living developments, which have communal lounges and gardens, often organise events to encourage interaction with non-residents.

At Ash Lodge in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, children from nearby Ashley Primary School visited to show residents pop-up books about rainforests that they made in class – and read aloud from them.

“The children were so excited to show the owners their handmade books,” says class teacher Gill Hood, “and it was lovely to hear them sharing their stories, too.”

Regional marketing manager Anne Scherrer adds: “It’s great for the owners to get involved with visits like this. We are always keen to arrange an assortment of events in the owners’ lounge at the Lodge.”

A similar event at Churchill’s Stokes Lodge in Camberley, Surrey, had children from The Grove Primary School’s choir singing for residents then reading aloud to them.

Living in a retirement development has not stopped McCarthy & Stone homeowner Roland Rudderham from getting involved with the local community under his own steam.

The 66-year-old is a volunteer for The National Coastwatch Institution charity and moved to McCarthy & Stone’s San Lorenzo Court in St Ives, Cornwall, in 2014.

“I had been living in Hampshire in a three-bedroom home by myself for some years but the expense and the upkeep was getting too much for me,” he says.

“So I decided it was time to downsize to something more manageable – to escape the rat race and move to be by the sea.

“I saw an advert for the NCI which really caught my eye. As I had spent most of my life working in the marine industry the position really appealed to me and before I knew it I was a trainee watchkeeper.”

Roland spends four hours a week volunteering for the NCI, which involves watching out for any type of boat along the coast from the St Ives watch tower.

He also keeps an eye out for swimmers in difficulty. “When I retired I could have lounged about and put my feet up but that’s just not me,” says Roland, who also volunteers as a steward for the St Ives Festival.

“I wanted to stay active and have a sense of purpose where I could use all the skills I have acquired during my years,” he adds.

“It makes no sense when we get to a certain age to just stop doing all the things we’ve always done, especially when they could benefi t other people.”

All the apartments at Roland’s San Lorenzo Court are now sold but McCarthy & Stone developments nearby include Trelawny House in Falmouth, with two-bedroom apartments from £321,950, and Lys Lander in Truro, where there is one two-bedroom flat left for £279,950 (0800 201 4811; mccarthyandstone.co.uk).

Churchill Retirement Living also has a new development in Truro, Tregolls Lodge. One-bedroom apartments there are for sale from £197,950 and two-bedroom flats are available from £276,950 (01872 464278; churchillretirement.co.uk).

‘Isolation’ Trailer: Because ‘Avatar,’ ‘Prison Break,’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Actors Gotta Eat https://briefnews.eu/isolation-trailer-because-avatar-prison-break-and-battlestar-galactica-actors-gotta-eat/ https://briefnews.eu/isolation-trailer-because-avatar-prison-break-and-battlestar-galactica-actors-gotta-eat/#respond Sat, 18 Feb 2017 06:08:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/isolation-trailer-because-avatar-prison-break-and-battlestar-galactica-actors-gotta-eat/ isolation trailer

Look, Isolation: you kind-of, sort-of had me with “Stephen Lang is a modern day pirate and a pervert who holds a guy hostage with a corkscrew in one scene.” It’s a shame that the rest of the trailer for this upcoming thriller, which is being dumped direct to DVD and VOD in April, looks so bland. So very, very bland.

But guys: I’m not sure I can say no to Stephen Lang in a goofy hat and a tank top terrorizing Battlestar Galactica‘s Tricia Helfer. Help.

Look, a movie can get a lot of mileage out of just letting an actor as tough and intimidating as Lang strut his stuff for the duration of the running time. His over-the-top villainy remains my favorite aspect of Avatar and his work as a psychopathic, murderous blind man in last year’s Don’t Breathe still makes my skin crawl when I think about it. Plus, I admire that Lang is true working actor, the kind of guy who can star in one of the biggest movies of all time and then star in a direct-to-video thriller because that’s what a guy has to do to pay the mortgage and put food on the table. Right on, Stephen Lang.

Anyway, the plot of Isolation has something to do with a couple (one half played by Helfer) who vacation in the Bahamas and find themselves at the mercy of a trio of modern day pirates. Lang is one of those pirates. Another one of them is Prison Break and Legends of Tomorrow star Dominic Purcell, who looks more and more like Vinnie Jones with each passing year.

It certainly doesn’t look good, but there are a few B-movie pleasures to be gleamed from that footage. I’m a sucker for any scene involving live-action sharks. Help.

Isolation is directed by Shane Dax Taylor and it’s been finished for at least a few years, having made a brief film festival appearance back in 2015. It arrives on digital HD, VOD and Wal-Mart exclusive DVD (oof) on April 18, 2017. Here’s the official synopsis:

Hoping to restore their flagging marriage, Lydia (Tricia Helfer) and Creighton (Luke Mably) journey to a remote island in the sun-drenched Bahamas. One drunken night, they return to their cabin to find it ransacked. Will nearby couple Max (Dominic Purcell) and Nina (Marie Avgeropoulos) offer them help — or harm? Also starring Stephen Lang, this seductive, sinister thriller shows that trust can be a dangerous thing.
