NEW DELHI (AP) — Police said they have mapped the area of a remote Indian island where tribespeople were seen burying the body of an American adventurer and Christian missionary after allegedly killing him with arrows this month.

But before they can even attempt to recover the body of 26-year-old John Allen Chau, authorities have to learn from experts “the nuances of the group’s conduct and behavior, particularly in this kind of violent behavior,” said Dependra Pathak, the director-general of police of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where North Sentinel Island is located.

The first game of the World Cup kicks off at 6 p.m. local time in the refurbished and freshly re-turfed Luzhniki Stadium on the Moscow River.   

After years of weak economic growth caused in part by Western sanctions and deteriorating political relations with most NATO and European countries, Russia desperately wants to demonstrate that Western isolation failed to crush its spirit or lessen its ability to put on a great show with the whole world watching.

Canadian soccer mom Leticia Mandrier says her first impressions of the event and the country have surpassed her expectations.

"I am really pleasantly surprised," she told CBC News, as she watched her 11-year-old twins play in a youth soccer tournament in Moscow that's associated with the World Cup.

Her family, from the Montreal suburb of Ahuntsic, won an all-expenses-paid trip to take part in the event sponsored by Russian oil giant Gazprom.

This is Mandrier's first trip back to Moscow since living here as a child with her diplomat parents in the early 1990s. 

"Downtown Moscow has changed a lot. It's very nice," she said.

"I have memories … of people, in general, not being very happy people. But they're friendly."

For the next month, Russia is expecting more than one million foreign visitors to fly into its airports, take free train trips to 11 World Cup host cities and drop more than $ 1.6 billion on hotels and other activities.

But the biggest boost to the country could come from the enhanced impression of Russia that all those visitors take home with them.

"People come to Russia, and they can see with their own eyes what we are doing and how Russians live," said Russian political scientist Andrei Kortunov, head of the Russian International Affairs Council think-tank.

"And it shows that we will not yield under pressure. We will survive, we will cope, we are optimistic and we are confident. That's the message."

With so many Russian cities hosting matches, and visa-free travel available for international visitors with game tickets, Kortunov says there's never been such an opportunity for one-on-one interactions between foreign visitors and Russians.

And the exchange is equally important for Russians, he says, who generally travel infrequently outside the country.

"We have seen lots of bad news about the West, about westerners and government societies. So for Russians, it's important to be exposed to people from other countries, to see there is no reason to consider them enemies."

Russia vs. the West

Still, Kortunov says it's unrealistic to expect a single event — even one as large as the World Cup — to push either the Russian government, or governments in the West, to make major policy changes.

"We need much more to change the momentum in the relationship between Russia and the West," he said.

That much was clear last week when U.S. President Donald Trump proposed inviting Russia to rejoin the G7. His colleagues in the group of the world's most powerful economies rejected the idea, arguing Putin hasn't changed his antagonizing ways since the group booted Russia over its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Nonetheless, Russian state TV is focused on exploring what first-time visitors think of the country, devoting hours of programming to the topic.

In one recent segment, a Russian TV host took groups of French, Argentine, Brazilian and other tourists on a trip around Moscow, stopping to eat Russian pancakes and dance to Russian folk songs. At the end, they all joined hands and yelled, "We love Russia," as they jumped into the air.

Another report profiled journalists who are covering the World Cup.

"I was in Moscow 10 years ago," Egyptian cameraman Mohammed Al Salkhla told Russia's Channel One. "The city is unrecognizable. The streets are cleaned and very well maintained."

Indonesian photographer Pancha Sookani was effusive in his interview.

"Everyone must come to see this country for themselves and meet the people," Sookani said. "They are nothing like how they portray them to be overseas. I haven't met a rude or aggressive person yet."

'Sports without politics'

Still, there's no shortage of critics who see a World Cup hosted by Russia as an abomination.    

Most leaders from Western nations are avoiding the event.

Financier-turned-human rights activist Bill Browder accused British singer Robbie Williams, who is performing at tonight's opening ceremony, of "selling his soul" to Vladimir Putin.

Browder has been a ferocious Putin critic, and has pushed governments around the world, including Canada, to adopt anti-corruption legislation aimed at punishing members of Putin's regime.

On the eve of the tournament, the group Reporters Without Borders released a report condemning Putin's treatment of his opponents.

The report ranked Russia 148th out of 180 countries for press freedom, claiming more journalists are imprisoned in the country now than at any other time.

However, Putin has seemed pleased with how preparations for the tournament have gone. He released a video that features him welcoming visitors in English.

And yesterday, he thanked a gathering of hundreds of FIFA delegates for the help Russia has received to stage the event.

"I wanted to underline FIFA's commitment to the principle of sports without politics."

Rouhani dismissed America’s anti-nuclear rhetoric, saying the US is the only country to have ever used an atomic bomb.

Earlier on Friday, Trump announced that his administration will not certify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement and announced new sanctions against Tehran.

The US leader said he wanted Congress to come up with legislation that will amend the nuclear accord. If negotiations with Tehran on the amendments fail, “the deal will be terminated,” he warned.

This comes despite the International Atomic Energy Agency’s earlier confirmation that the Middle East state is in compliance with its obligations.

Trump has always been critical of the Iranian deal, which was signed in 2015 after years of negotiation by Tehran and a group of world powers, which included the US, UK, Russia, France, China, Germany and the EU.

An Australian journalist gave a scathing critique of President Donald Trump’s performance at the G-20 summit in Germany this week in a news segment that has gone viral in the United States.

In the news segment, aired on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation show “Insiders,” Chris Uhlmann described Trump as an “isolated and friendless” leader on the global stage who “has no desire and no capacity to lead the world.”

“He was an uneasy, lonely, awkward figure at this gathering, and you got the strong sense that some of the leaders are trying to find the best way to work around him,” Uhlmann said, speaking from the conference in Hamburg.

Uhlmann said Trump wasted an opportunity to condemn North Korea for its recent test of long-range missiles, a move that could have earned him support from other leaders turned off by his opposition to the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The journalist also contrasted the “scripted” Trump, who gave a well-received speech in Poland, with the “unscripted” Trump — “a man who barks out bile in 140 characters, who wastes his precious days as president at war with the West’s institutions, like the judiciary, independent government agencies, and the free press.”

“Donald Trump’s a man who craves power because it burnishes his celebrity. To be constantly talking and talked about is all that really matters, and there is no value placed on the meaning of words, so what’s said one day can be discarded the next.”

Uhlmann wrapped up the segment with an ominous assessment.

“So what did we learn? We learned that Donald Trump has pressed fast-forward on the decline of the United States as a global leader,” he said.

The blunt critique appears to have struck a chord in the United States — a video of the segment has been viewed more than 1 million times on Twitter and Facebook over the weekend, and exploded on liberal Facebook groups and message boards. It came even as critics pointed to controversial comments Uhlmann made in 2016 about Jewish people fleeing Adolf Hitler’s Germany.

The New York Times noted the appeal of the segment to many Americans, describing Uhlmann’s commentary as “out of line for American journalists, who are supposed to strive for objectivity and to keep opinions to the editorial pages.”

The Bajau people in Malaysia live just on the edge of civilisation.

Near the city of Semporna, the tribes are prohibited from living on the mainland due to government migration issues.

Photographer Claudio Sieber visited the communities to explore their way of life on the water.

The civilisation has adapted to being on the water in the way of stilt house and houseboats.

The tribe, made up of several Austronesian ethnic groups of Southeast Asia, originated in the Philippines which they left after conflicts between the government and rebel groups.

Yet they have no citizenship in Malaysia so are unable to create a life onshore.

This also means the children of the tribe are unable to go to Malaysian schools and so instead learn to dive and fish from a young age instead.

However, the tribe is far from uneducated.

The innovative stilted huts they create from scratch can house up to thirty people, being built in just three weeks.

Claudio Sieber commented on their life on the water: “Living in marine homes above shallow waters, the Bajau gather in off-shore communities which rely solely on the ocean.

“The Bajau live with a sparse set up on their handmade houseboats – called lepa lepa.

“Just essentials are needed, like fishing and cooking gear and one outfit for each family member.”

However, he also noted that they are left to fend for themselves due to their lack of rights onshore: ”Most of the Bajau I spoke to have no citizenships and therefore no rights to settle ashore. 

“According to local human rights activists, as well as former government officials, there is no solution in sight to grant the next Bajau generation a brighter future.”

Another hidden tribe were also found in the hills of Bangladesh.

They were found to live in bamboo houses in the hills, as they hunted tiger and created their own beer.
