Djokovic is the favourite to win the tournament and he kicks-off his campaign against the lowest ranked player in the competition.

World No 10 Isner qualified for the season-ending event for the first time in his career because Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro withdrew through injury.

However, the American was in good spirits ahead of his daunting debut, even joking that he would make light work of the world No 1.

“I think it will be really easy for me,” Isner said.

“He is the number one player in the world and he has won this event five times if I am not mistaken.

“He is the player to beat this week for sure. He is back to number one in the world and the second half of the year has been a whirlwind.

“It is a good spot for me because I don’t have much to lose. I am definitely the underdog.

“I have got to go out there and try my best, try to play loose and free and see what happens.”

Isner won his maiden Masters 1000 title this evening in scorching conditions at Key Biscayne.

He came from behind to prevail in three sets – 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 – as Crandon Park was given a fitting farewell after staging the tournament for 31 years.

In doing so, Isner will jump to a career-high of world No 9 when the rankings are published tomorrow and he will regain the mantle of No 1 American.

Isner also became the oldest first-time winner of an ATP Masters 1000 event in clinching his first win over Zverev, who entered the tournament fifth in the ATP standings.

And the 32-year-old thinks Zverev, who has struggled to make an impact on the Grand Slams, will reach the summit of the men’s game one day.

“We have known each other for seven to eight years now,” Isner said.

“I was practising with him when he was 14 and I knew he was going to be the next big thing in tennis.

“He has won two of these before so I appreciate you letting me have one.

“You have the brightest future ahead of you and the greatest team with you. You do everything the right way.

“I see the work you put in. You deserve everything you have accomplished so far and everything you will accomplish in the future.

“Keep pushing along and you are going to be at the very top one day.”

Nadal entered the draw as the top seed having finished 2017 as the oldest year-end world No 1 ever.

But the 31-year-old also flew to Australia under an injury cloud and has still not played a competitive match since withdrawing from the ATP World Tour Finals in November because of a knee injury.

However, Nadal has played in two exhibition tournaments this week with no apparent pain and is expected to be fully fit for his first-round clash with Victor Estrella Burgos.

The world No 81 will be facing Nadal for the first time ever at the age of 37 with either Nicolas Jarry or more likely Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer awaiting the winner in the second round.

But the world No 1’s first real test of the Australian Open could come in the fourth round, if No 16 seed Isner makes it through his first three matches.

The American recorded his first ever win over Nadal last year, beating the Spaniard 7-5, 7-6 at the inaugural Laver Cup competition in September.

Federer meanwhile looks set to make what is now customarily serene progress through the early rounds after being handed a kind bottom quarter.

The Swiss, who played three five-setters including the final at last year’s tournament, will take on former Brit Aljaz Bedene in the first round, an opponent he has also never faced before but is unlikely to cause him many problems.

But even by the time he reaches the stage where he can face other seeds, it looks hard to believe he will be challenged.

World No 31 Richard Gasquet is on an eight-match losing streak against Federer and could face him again in the third round while Sam Querrey or Milos Raonic are the potential fourth-round opponents.

Novak Djokovic was regarded as a “dangerous floater” as the No 14 seed after six months off – he will have to come through Donald Young and then probably Gael Monfils, and if he wants to make the quarter-finals he will probably have to come through Alexander Zverev.

And Djokovic’s difficult draw appears to have been reflected in the betting markets. Roger Federer remains a 7/4 favourite with Betfair but the Serb, who had joined Nadal yesterday as joint second favourite, is now back to 6/1 while Nadal has shortened up to 7/2.

World No1 Nadal takes on American Isner in the last eight of the men’s side at the China Open.

Nadal, who won the US Open last month, has beaten Lucas Pouille and Karen Khachanov to make it this far.

Isner, meanwhile, beat Nadal at the Laver Cup last month – coming out on top 7-5 6-5.

But for ATP events Nadal is 6-0 up on Isner.

Nadal vs Isner comes following Simona Halep’s victory over Daria Kasatkina, while Grigor Dimitrov also beat Roberto Bautista Agut on the second court.
