Seven of One Tree Hill‘s finest reunited on Thanksgiving — eight, if you include the one who dropped in via Skype — to look back on the drama’s past… and future?

Hosted by Paul Johansson (aka Dan Scott), ‘Tis the Season: A One Tree Hill Cast Reunion brought together Hilarie Burton (aka Peyton Sawyer-Scott), Danneel Ackles (aka Rachel Gattina), Antwon Tanner (aka Antwon “Skills” Taylor), Tyler Hilton (aka Chris Keller), Robert Buckley (aka Clay Evans), Bevin Prince (aka Bevin Mirskey) and Stephen Colletti (aka Chase Adams), many of whom starred in Lifetime’s The Christmas Contract, which premiered immediately prior to this reunion special.

And while the hour-long special was oozing with nostalgia — guys, remember when Pete Wentz was on this show? — the cast was also forced to answer the question all casts of beloved series must face in this day and age: Would anyone be down for a One Tree Hill revival?

Several cast members were ready to sign on the dotted line right then and there, but Burton proposed an alternative. “It would be a Christmas movie set in Tree Hill,” she said. “It would be great to have an excuse to go back to Wilmington and all be together again.” Echoed Johansson, “Our fans would love it. We could it for them.”

The actors also speculated about where their characters would be today: Burton thinks Peyton would be in rehab because “she had a lot of stuff going wrong,” though Prince — on a more optimistic note — thinks Peyton could have evolved into a life coach; Tanner thinks Skills would still be coaching basketball at Tree Hill High School; Hilton thinks Chris would still be on tour, “trying to sleep his way through every fan he has”; and Colletti believes that Chase would have evolved from bar manager to music venue owner.

Also, remember when the Tree Hill alumni tweeted (then deleted) those on-set photos from The Christmas Contract? It turns out that wasn’t merely a publicity stunt; as Ackles explained in the special, “We might have gotten in trouble for that.”

“I think it was Buckley’s idea!” Tanner recalled. (Sure, blame the guy who isn’t around to defend himself.) “We all took a photo in the background when no one was looking. We were like, ‘Let’s see if the fans catch on.’ So we all posted it at the same time, and the fans were like, ‘Oh my God, something’s happening!’”

Unfortunately, as Burton explained, “The film hadn’t been announced, so we had to take [the tweets] down, which created an even bigger buzz.”

Tell us: Would you be down for a One Tree Hill revival, or is it best to let sleeping (and heart-eating) dogs lie? And if you watched the reunion special, what was your favorite part? Drop a comment with all of your thoughts below.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

The New Way to a Sports Fan's Heart Isn't Through Success https://briefnews.eu/the-new-way-to-a-sports-fans-heart-isnt-through-success/ https://briefnews.eu/the-new-way-to-a-sports-fans-heart-isnt-through-success/#respond Thu, 12 Jul 2018 14:54:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-new-way-to-a-sports-fans-heart-isnt-through-success/ The man seated in front of me is dangerously close to spilling his Fuku chicken sandwich onto the concrete where I’ve been spitting peanut shells. If the sandwich goes, so too will his cocktail. Courtesy of Citi Field’s Jim Beam Bourbon Bar, says the cup. With thinning gray hair, a pressed Brooks Brothers button-down and his floppy blue “dad hat,” this New York Mets fan doesn’t seem to fit the ballpark social media promotion demographic. But as he snaps an iPhoto of the $ 25 meal balanced on his knee, one stereotype is put to rest. Soon, a hashtagged Instagram post will follow.

In the 300-level bleachers, in a roped-off section called the Bud Light Landing overlooking left field, social media influencers rub elbows with lubricated fans as part of a promotion with a popular sports blog. On this Saturday night, Mets fans show up in droves even as their team loses for the fifth straight game. But, an experience was had. To the Mets, that itself is vindication of a strategy.

There was a time when $ 1 hot dogs and 24-ounce “souvenir” cups filled with frothy light brew qualified as ballpark promotions. Now, organizations are scrambling to develop fresh ways to provide fans a comprehensive game day “experience” — boring T-shirt giveaways and modest concessions don’t cut it anymore. And leading the way are organizations whose teams are struggling on the field or are novices trying to make a mark. Whether by bulking up culinary offerings, hosting social-driven watch parties or borrowing from political strategies, their next wave of ticketing operations hinges on the belief that fans crave communal experiences and involvement.

The Oakland Athletics are constructing a party deck called the Treehouse, with two bars and a 1,000-person capacity that, unlike in-stadium VIP areas, offers subscription-based tickets — $ 29.99 per month for six months or $ 149.99 annually. Oakland routinely ranks in the bottom three of MLB attendance, and this season, average attendance has plummeted from 18,446 in 2017 to 15,500. A far cry from the Coliseum’s 63,132 capacity. But with the subscription model, the A’s are calculating that much like an unused gym membership, fans who stay home can still bolster business.

When the product on the field is unreliable, it helps to have another source of entertainment.

Mike Shafland, Mets fan

Over at FC Cincinnati, a 3-year-old professional soccer club in the tier-two United Soccer League, president and general manager Jeff Berding is trying to engage supporters through a fan advisory council. The cabinet of 30 season ticket holders “from varied walks of life” gets to weigh in on a range of issues, from the club’s uniform design and international friendly schedules to plans for a new stadium.

And while Yankees fans may turn their 27 World Series–winning noses up at the Mets, in New York City it’s the Queens club that reigns supreme in fan engagement. From chicken and waffles and mouthwatering barbecue to melted raclette over bratwurst on a baguette, Citi Field boasts impressive culinary efforts the Yankees can’t match. Hell, the Mets have even opened an in-stadium craft brewery — by Danish microbrewery Mikkeller — that can accommodate non-ticket holders.

“For fans, there’s no choosing another team,” says Mike Shafland, 29, a lifelong Mets fan who lives in Brooklyn. “When the product on the field is unreliable, it helps to have another source of entertainment.”

20180710 mets 240

To be sure, it isn’t as though innovative fan-engagement strategies have emerged only now. Way back in 1979, the Chicago White Sox held a now-infamous promotion for rock-and-roll purists called “Disco Demolition Night.” When a local disc jockey detonated a crate full of disco records in the outfield, thousands of disorderly fans rushed the field and a riot ensued. Years later, in 2004, the NBA’s Washington Wizards introduced Singles Nights — where single fans could attend games, and perhaps find romance — to attract younger audiences.

But such innovations are no longer isolated initiatives separated by years. Now, unique fan-engagement strategies are emerging as the lifeblood of efforts to stay alive for teams struggling to keep their support base excited.

The strategy is simple. Take the Mets, for instance. In a food-forward city like New York, the taste buds are as good a way as any to get fans into the stadium — even if they’ll only watch from inside a brewery. “We’re helping make Citi Field more of a destination ballpark,” says Patrick Schaeffer, senior executive chef at Aramark, the company that brings restaurants to Citi Field. “Instagrammable food,” as Schaeffer calls it, may feel at odds with the hollering hot dog vendor, but these new offerings have fans marketing the business themselves. “When the team sucks, at least we still get to have fun,” says Shafland.

At the Oakland Treehouse, a pass admits fans to every home game, on the Treehouse deck only. “We are committed to enhancing the fan experience and delivering dynamic and new ways to enjoy A’s baseball,” says team president Dave Kaval in a statement.

Still, drawing fans to the stadiums — and building relationships with them — remains important. That’s what Berding is trying to do at FC Cincinnati. “We know that people want ownership and they want to be a part of something special,” says Berding, who, before launching FC Cincinnati in 2015, worked in the Cincinnati Bengals front office for 19 years and was elected three times to the Cincinnati city council. His young team is on the anvil of a big leap — after two seasons of USL record attendance, FC Cincinnati was invited to join Major League Soccer (MLS) as an expansion team in 2019.

For the politically savvy Berding, growing an already passionate fan base requires “running our club with a civic mindset and authentic accessibility.” Ranging from $ 10–$ 40, FC Cincinnati’s tickets offer a welcoming entry point. And though a television deal for every game for the team’s first three seasons cost the club “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” it was worth it, he suggests. “It was an advertising investment,” Berding says. “The teams with their games on TV are the ones that get covered on the news.”

Amid this razzmatazz of initiatives, it’s impossible not to ask: “Is anyone watching the game?” To the teams leading these efforts though, the answer may matter only so much.

The Voice Isn't Making Its Alumni Stars, But It Still Matters — Here's Why https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-isnt-making-its-alumni-stars-but-it-still-matters-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-isnt-making-its-alumni-stars-but-it-still-matters-heres-why/#respond Mon, 28 May 2018 22:18:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-voice-isnt-making-its-alumni-stars-but-it-still-matters-heres-why/ Often I’ve read in the comments that follow TVLine’s recaps of The Voice that the show has never produced a star on the same level as American Idol. And I can’t argue that NBC’s sing-off has started any success stories on par with those of Carrie Underwood or Adam Lambert. (Can you imagine Idol poaching a Voice alum for its judging panel the way The Voice has Idol grads Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson? Me, neither.) However, I can argue that The Voice, perhaps better known for its swivel chairs than its former contestants, nonetheless matters — and here’s why.

the-voice-singers-fans-relationship-season-15Those of us who grew up in an age when the M in MTV still stood for music are used to being introduced to new artists by a third party who helps us get to know said artists and coaxes out their personalities. And to this day, we like having that middleman act as the equivalent of an icebreaker at a party, asking, “Did you know Kyla Jade used to sing backup for JHud?” or telling us, “Britton Buchanan has the driest sense of humor. Britton, come over here and say something funny.” The go-between assures that we become as well-acquainted with the vocalists as we do their vocals, and as a result, the singer/fan relationship is stronger than it would be if, say, we’d just happened upon a random music video on YouTube. (Which is ordinarily how I hear/see new stuff.)

the-voice-singers-fans-relationship-season-15Obviously, the middleman approach doesn’t do the trick for every viewer, which is why Voice grads, like Idol contestants in later seasons, have rarely gone on to become (or remain) household names. But for some of us, the connections stick. For instance, I still check iTunes all the time to see if Chris Blue has released anything new that’s as cool as “Blue Blood Blues.” (“Humanity” didn’t do it for me.) And since I got so attached to, and was so impressed by, Addison Agen and Jaclyn Lovey during Seasons 13 and 14, respectively, I’ve discovered their lovely pre-show releases.

Is that enough to kick-start a big career? Of course not. But it might be enough to get a small one going. And even if it isn’t, there’s value in an up-and-comer reaching a new, wider audience, because at least a few of us are sure to follow them long after they’ve sung their Voice swan songs. What do you think? Are there any past contestants whose music you still look forward to? Or when the season’s done, so are you? Hit the comments.

Diabetes type 2: FIVE complications of high blood sugar if it isn't looked after https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-five-complications-of-high-blood-sugar-if-it-isnt-looked-after/ https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-five-complications-of-high-blood-sugar-if-it-isnt-looked-after/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 18:21:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-five-complications-of-high-blood-sugar-if-it-isnt-looked-after/

Diabetes is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin, or the body’s cells not reacting to insulin, according to the NHS.

Without enough insulin, glucose stays in the blood and isn’t converted into energy.

The condition puts extra strain on blood vessels and patients’ vital organs.

Without proper treatment, diabetes can increase the risk of heart disease, strokes, kidney disease and even sexual dysfunction.

Heart disease

Diabetics are up to five times more likely to develop heart disease, or have a stroke, the NHS said.

“Prolonged, poorly controlled blood glucose levels increase the likelihood of atherosclerosis, where the blood vessels become clogged up and narrowed by fatty substances,” it said.

“This may result in poor blood supply to your heart, causing angina, which is a dull, heavy or tight pain in the chest.

“It also increases the chance that a blood vessel in your heart or brain will become blocked, leading to a heart attack or stroke.”

Nerve damage

Having too much glucose in the blood can damage tiny blood vessels in your nerves.

It can lead to a tingling, or burning pain sensation in your fingers and toes.

The NHS said: “If the nerves in your digestive system are affected, you may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation.”

Kidney disease

About 40 per cent of diabetes patients develop kidney disease, according to Diabetes.co.uk.

Diabetes affects the body’s arteries, and as the kidneys filter blood from many arteries, kidney problems are a common risk for patients, it added.

“To help catch kidney disease before the later stages develop, people with diabetes should be screened for kidney complications once a year.

“The screening test involves a simple urine sample which is tested to detect whether protein is present in the urine.”

Foot ulcers

Nerve damage in your feet make it difficult to notice small cuts on your feet.

Combined with poor circulation, it can lead to a foot ulcer.

A foot ulcer is an open sore, that can be very deep.

Harvard Medical School said: “A deep foot ulcer may be a crater that extends through the full thickness of the skin. It may involve tendons, bones and other deep structures.

“Among people with diabetes, most severe foot infections that ultimately require some part of the toe, foot or lower leg to be amputated start as a foot ulcer.”

Sexual dysfunction

Men with diabetes can suffer from erectile dysfunction.

It can usually be treated with medication, but those that smoke, have nerve damage, or blood vessel damage are most at risk.

“Women with diabetes may experience a reduced sex drive, less pleasure from sex, vaginal dryness, less ability to orgasm, and pain during sex,” said the NHS.

Flight secrets: How to drink your own alcohol on a plane – and it ISN'T illegal https://briefnews.eu/flight-secrets-how-to-drink-your-own-alcohol-on-a-plane-and-it-isnt-illegal/ https://briefnews.eu/flight-secrets-how-to-drink-your-own-alcohol-on-a-plane-and-it-isnt-illegal/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2018 15:41:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flight-secrets-how-to-drink-your-own-alcohol-on-a-plane-and-it-isnt-illegal/

Flights can be a stressful experience, so many choose to have a drink on the plane.

Yet ordering a drink from the trolley can come at a cost, and most airlines prohibit passengers from drinking their own alcohol that they bring on board.

This includes both their own drinks and those brought in duty-free.

One expert has since revealed how there is a way around this, and that there is a legal way to be able to drink onboard a flight.

Travel writer of website God Save The Points Gilbert Ott explained how to both bring it onboard and be allowed to drink it.

Bringing personal alcohol is allowed if it is under 100ml.

“Fortunately, mini alcohol bottles fit into the sizing requirements, and you can bring multiple mini-bottles through security,” Mr Ott explains.

“It’s absolutely fine. Just put them in a clear plastic bag, just as you would any other liquid items.”

Otherwise purchasing a slightly larger bottle at duty-free is also allowed, as long as it is in a sealed bag.

Drinking it during a flight, however, is a contentious topic, with many stating that any alcohol that isn’t from the serving cart is banned.

Mr Ott explains how this isn’t always the case as, depending on the airline, personal alcohol can be drunk if it isn’t served by the passengers.

He reveals: “You CANNOT serve yourself on the plane. Any plane. No. You can’t.

”You CAN however politely ask a member of the cabin crew if they would not mind serving you the liquor you brought on board.”

The catch is that the alcohol must be finished before landing and, as it is at the flight attendants discretion, they may stop serving the alcohol if they feel the passenger is too inebriated.

Mr Ott emphasises to “be discreet” and that “the crew must dispose of anything open and unconsumed at the end of the flight”.

It is worth checking if the airline does allow this or if they actively prohibit it. JetBlue flights promoted the policy recently which allows passengers drinking their own alcohol.

The British Airways website confirms that alcohol under 100ml is allowed, but any opened duty free bags which include alcohol are disposed of if there is a connection between the flights.

Cheapflights also stated: “It’s against federal regulation to open your own bottle of alcohol on a flight or to drink alcohol that was not directly served to you by a flight attendant.”

This could imply that if the flight attendant serves it then it is okay to drink onboard.

Airport bars could soon ban over-indulging on alcohol by issuing a two-drink limit.

British travellers worry about this the most when abroad – and it isn't terror attacks https://briefnews.eu/british-travellers-worry-about-this-the-most-when-abroad-and-it-isnt-terror-attacks/ https://briefnews.eu/british-travellers-worry-about-this-the-most-when-abroad-and-it-isnt-terror-attacks/#respond Fri, 19 Jan 2018 16:19:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/british-travellers-worry-about-this-the-most-when-abroad-and-it-isnt-terror-attacks/

British holidays abroad are set to soar in 2018 with new flight routes and cheaper travel deals.

Two-thirds of Britons travel five or more times a year, according to holiday and travel show Destinations.

With holidays come problems such as safety and money worries, but new research has found one prevailing issue that Britons worry about most.

Despite recent terror attacks plaguing many British holiday destinations, this isn’t the biggest fear.

Losing a passport is the worry of most Britons when travelling abroad, with 40 per cent citing this as their biggest concern.

The survey asked 1,200 people over the age of 50 what they were most afraid of when on holiday.

A potential terror attack was the worry of just 25 per cent of people asked. A country which had already experienced a terrorist attack would still be a destination they would want to visit, according to 87 per cent.

Missing a flight was feared by 23 per cent and only 11 per cent worried about a natural disaster happening during a trip abroad.

Surprisingly, 99 per cent of Britons felt safe when going on holiday.

Rob Debenham, Show Manager commented on the findings: “It is heartening to see that Brits are showing resilience and remain passionate about travelling despite the current worldwide unrest and economic uncertainty.

“Due to the introduction of new flight routes to emerging destinations, experiential tours and the advent of transformative tourism, the opportunities to travel now are endless.

“The travel industry is therefore seeing a significant rise in people exploring places they’ve never been to before.”

Those looking for the cheapest holiday in 2018 should head to Bulgaria, according to the Post Office.

The annual Post Office’s Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer is released every January, analysing the cost of eight holiday item essentials to find the cheapest spot.

The items include coffee at a cafe, an alcoholic beverage, sun cream and a three-course meal.

Sunny Beach in Bulgaria was the most affordable costing just £37.92 for the items included.

Coming up in second was Tokyo in Japan, costing just £43.14 whilst the most expensive spot was China Town in Singapore, costing a whopping £153.72.

Toyota Yaris iA, Mazda CX-3 sales show crossover formula isn't an automatic win https://briefnews.eu/toyota-yaris-ia-mazda-cx-3-sales-show-crossover-formula-isnt-an-automatic-win/ https://briefnews.eu/toyota-yaris-ia-mazda-cx-3-sales-show-crossover-formula-isnt-an-automatic-win/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 21:29:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/toyota-yaris-ia-mazda-cx-3-sales-show-crossover-formula-isnt-an-automatic-win/
While 2017 was another watershed year for crossovers, in one interesting case, a crossover had its lunch eaten by its sedan counterpart. In the past year, Toyota sold nearly 36,000 Yaris iAs, a sedan that is identical to the foreign-market Mazda2 in everything but Toyota’s ugly front bumper. In the same time frame, Mazda sold just over 16,000 CX-3s, a subcompact crossover based on the Mazda2. Not only that, but the Yaris iA saw an increase of around 8,000 units over 2016, and the CX-3 sold about 2,000 fewer units than in 2016.

There are a few reasons this is surprising. First of course is that the crossover market is surface-of-the-sun hot right now, so much so that primarily crossover-building brand Subaru saw its best sales year ever last year. Even Mazda’s other crossovers, the CX-5 and CX-9 saw better sales in 2017 than in 2016. But on paper, the CX-3 has a number of advantages compared to the Yaris iA. The CX-3 has a larger 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes about 40 more horsepower than the 1.5-liter engine in the Toyota. Also, while the cargo area behind the rear seats in the CX-3 is about one cubic foot smaller than the iA, it has the added flexibility of being a hatchback, and thus having more capability when it comes to large, bulky items. And of course, the CX-3 is quite a shapely machine compared with the awkward, angry-looking iA.

That’s not to say the iA doesn’t have any of its own advantages. It gets 3 more mpg in the city and 6 more on the highway than the CX-3. It also costs roughly $ 3,000 to $ 4,000 less than a CX-3 and can be found at more dealers than the Mazda. But it’s still surprising that a car, especially a sedan, can outsell a mechanically very similar crossover. Apparently the formula of adding more ground clearance and plastic fenders isn’t foolproof. Then again, maybe it’s not such a big deal to Mazda, since the CX-3’s total sales were just over a tenth that of the Mazda CX-5.
