In a tweet spotted by MacRumors, display analyst Ross Young said he expects Apple to make the screen cutout standard on all 2023 iPhones. Additionally, the company will reportedly keep its ProMotion 120Hz display technology exclusive to Pro variants due to a supply chain that “can’t support” the feature on more affordable models. In a subsequent tweet, Young said Apple is likelier to trickle down the technology to less expensive iPhones in 2024.

Making the Dynamic Island standard on every new iPhone moving forward would make a lot of sense for Apple, particularly to encourage developers to take advantage of the feature. Some apps already use the cutout for fun features. Once iOS 16.1 arrives later this year, Dynamic Island will also work with Apple’s Live Activities API. It’s also a feature that would make the standard iPhone more appealing to consumers holding onto their current device. While the iPhone 12 was a big upgrade over the iPhone 11, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have been less exciting. There’s not much reason to buy the latest one unless you’re coming from an iPhone several years old, and that's not great for Apple's bottom line.

Apollo update transforms the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island into a home for ‘Pixel Pals’ https://briefnews.eu/apollo-update-transforms-the-iphone-14-pros-dynamic-island-into-a-home-for-pixel-pals/ https://briefnews.eu/apollo-update-transforms-the-iphone-14-pros-dynamic-island-into-a-home-for-pixel-pals/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 01:09:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/apollo-update-transforms-the-iphone-14-pros-dynamic-island-into-a-home-for-pixel-pals/ The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may have only arrived yesterday but developers are already dreaming up fun and interesting use cases for Apple’s new Dynamic Island interface. Take Apollo creator Christian Selig, for instance. On Friday, he updated his Reddit client to implement support for “Pixel Pals.” The feature adds a Tamagotchi-like critter that does cute things on top of your phone’s Dynamic Island while you have Apollo open. You can even choose between multiple creatures, including a cat, dog, hedgehog, fox or axolotl.

If you don’t have an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, don’t worry. You can also add the creatures to your phone as lock screen widgets – provided you have iOS 16 installed. On the subject of iPhone widgets, Google teased one that will function as a shortcut to Chrome’s Dino game.

Selig isn’t the only person doing something creative with the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island. In a tweet spotted by The Verge, WaterMinder creator Kriss Smolka showed off Hit the Island, a game that uses the UI element for a Pong-style game. You can download it from the App Store. Return to Monkey Island is about ‘unfinished business’ for its creators https://briefnews.eu/return-to-monkey-island-is-about-unfinished-business-for-its-creators/ https://briefnews.eu/return-to-monkey-island-is-about-unfinished-business-for-its-creators/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 11:07:52 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/return-to-monkey-island-is-about-unfinished-business-for-its-creators/ Few adventure games series have the staying power of Monkey Island. Something about the humor and heart in the ongoing travels of Guybrush Threepwood as he strives to become a mighty pirate has resonated with players ever since the point-and-click adventure game The Secret of Monkey Island first released over 30 ago.

Following the 1991 release of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, there have been sequels and homages, but none made by the original creators of the series. That’s changing with the upcoming release of Return to Monkey Island, which launches on September 19. I had a chance to sit down with series creators Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman at PAX West to ask them about what brought them back and where the newly revived series goes from here. For them, the sequel is a matter of unfinished business — both for Guybrush and themselves.

Why are you returning to Monkey Island after all these years?

Ron Gilbert: This story really is about unfinished business. And I think there’s two levels. There’s the unfinished business Guybrush has with finding “what is the secret of Monkey Island?” And then I think there’s the unfinished business that Dave and I have of doing a new game, and it is about this unfinished business.

Dave Grossman: We sort of left a thread dangling in midair about 30 years ago.

There have been other Monkey Island titles that have danced around, but not strictly continued the story. Can you share where and when this story takes place?

Gilbert: It starts right at the end of Monkey Island 2. And then it gets really bizarre. And that’s all [we will] share. Because I really want people to experience that moment.

This is a series that has been around for over 30 years. How do you approach building an adventure game in 2022?

Gilbert: I think a lot of the same ways we approached it back then. I think there’s a fundamental thing to how you do an adventure game and how you tell the story. And especially the story in adventure games, which are primarily kind of pulled along by puzzles, that I think there’s just a way you do that, that just hasn’t really changed that much. So at its core, not much.

But on the other hand, the audience has changed quite a bit. We’re not dealing with eight-year-old boys who have tons of free time. We’re dealing with an audience that now has the choice of hundreds of games to play, and has hint systems at their fingertips in the form of Google. And we’re dealing with people who will, quite frankly, have lives, and they have to think about games a little bit differently than maybe people a long time ago. So that is very different. We need to look at how that audience approaches that adventure.

With that in mind, what has been done to make it so people without infinite time can progress through the game?

Grossman: One thing, there’s a built-in hint system … We don’t want to just sort of say here’s what you do, which is what you find in a walkthrough. We think that’s less fun than just sort of getting a nudge from somebody who knows what the game is about.

We can sort of step up the pace for the audience, we’ve done a little bit to improve the exploration, just in the way that we implemented the UI for that. The way you get through one of these games is largely solving puzzles with tools that you pick up. So you have an inventory full of stuff, and that hasn’t changed. And if they’re some sort of exotic, special-use item, you want to be able to trigger whatever it is that they do.

Guybrush Threepwood converses with another pirate over a campfire in Return to Monkey Island

Those map to the old, “look at thing, pick up thing and use [thing].” And so we’ve made an interface that only presents those options, and only where they make sense. The “use” is particularly problematic, because it’s super fake, right? So we started writing these little text descriptions of what’s actually going to happen. And we gradually realized that these are actually very flavorful. And they represent Guybush. He has thoughts about the world around him. And we thought, this is another great avenue for us to tell the story and expose character. And so we got really into that for a while. And we think it’s a great, just a great addition, that not only streamlines things, but it also kind of makes the game richer.

Did you know going into this game that you wanted to strictly stick to a point-and-click style adventure?

Gilbert: Yeah, I think so. Point-and-click is more than just an interface. Point-click is almost a way to tell a story. It’s a narrative framework that you lay on things with the puzzle-solving, moving things forward. And I think that’s something that Dave and I are very familiar with, and definitely something that we wanted to do with this game. Because there is some nostalgia in that. If this game had just turned into a first-person shooter or, you know, a video playback game or something, it’s not really what this is about. I think that the point-and-click nature is kind of the core of what we want to do here.

Grossman: One thing that impresses me is how smooth the controller interface is actually for doing point-click stuff. It’s just elegant and well-thought-out. It’s just a different approach to drive Guybrush around.

What are the challenges of being funny in a video game? How do you approach putting comedy into a game?

Grossman: I don’t know why people say comedy is hard, and I don’t know why they say it’s hard in games, because it isn’t. It’s a worldview. I think the only way that I am able to deal with a world, which I feel is absurd, is just by making fun of it. I feel like I have just got to make fun of everything [in the game], the same way that I’m thinking about everything around me. And it just makes it funny.

A shopkeep looks over his collection of keys in Return to Monkey Island.

People worry about timing and how you don’t really control the timing in one of these games. But that’s kind of false as well. Because the timing that’s critical for a joke to land is sort of momentary timing that we would put inside of a tiny, noninteractive thing. It’s like how much space is there between Guybrush’s line and the next person’s line. You really can spend some time adjusting that. So maybe if you don’t have a sense of timing, that does make it hard. There is kind of a musical aspect to it — you’ve got to put that line at exactly the right spot. But we do have total control over that kind of time.

And just as a general approach, we sort of work from the top-down and come up with a concept for the game, and then we come up with some chapters for the game, and then we come up with puzzles that go into the chapters and we sort of get finer and finer and finer. And we just try to be funny at every step of that process. And by the time we’re finished, the game is funny.

So in terms of Guybrush Threepwood, has he evolved much from the last time we’ve seen him and experienced his adventures?

Gilbert: He doesn’t. I mean, he’s very kind, very happy-go-lucky. You know? It’s like, the glass is always full for him. Not even half=full. It’s full. And I think this kind of makes him so endearing and charming. He does look at everything with this kind of wide-eyed enthusiasm. And we want players to look at the game through Guybrush’s eyes. So I don’t know that he has really changed. He’s not like a cynical bitter old man in this version of the game. I think there’s a little bit of oldness. I mean, he’s a little more experienced. He’s not the ‘I’m Guybrush I want to be a mighty pirate’. He is a mighty pirate now. So there is experience that goes along with that.

A blond pirate reaches his hand up the side of a ship in Return to Monkey Island

Grossman: Yeah, his attitude is sort of “I can find a way to solve this problem,” and he just doesn’t really think about the consequences that might occur. That’s sort of at the heart of what’s going on.

So when you look back then at the original, is that like looking into your past in terms of where you were mentally and what you were thinking about?

Gilbert: Yeah, it’s like, you can kind of look at those early games as a little metaphor for our stages as designers. The first one is Guybrush as a young pirate who wants to succeed as a pirate, and it was certainly like one of the first games we ever did. We were Guybrush in that sense. In the second game, he had some success. And he’s trying to prove himself now. And again, that’s kind of what we were doing with the second game. So it was a little bit of an autobiography that follows through those different games.

And is the same is true here, then?

Grossman: Totally, yeah. It’s unfinished business for us, unfinished business for Guybrush. There’s definitely a little mesh between real life and the game story.

Is there a balance that you look to strike between your image for what you’re creating versus what you think people might be expecting? Or are you really just all-in on your own artistic vision?

Grossman: If we think about what people were actually expecting, we’d be likely to do the opposite because we don’t want to just do what people expect. That’s never interesting. Like, we do think about how things were going to be received by the audience. That makes us cautious about some things, but sometimes we have to just do what is right for the game.

A female pirate is climbing a rope in a dimly lit pit in Return to Monkey Island.

Gilbert: I mean, ultimately, you have to do as you believe in. You know, I think if, fundamentally, you believe in what you’re doing, you’re not just crapping out a game for a paycheck. If you really believe in what you’re doing, I think that does come through. And a lot of people, in their defense a little bit, they haven’t played the game yet. They’ve just seen screenshots or seen little video clips. But it’s something we very deeply believe in. We believe in this game, we believe in the choices that are made for that game.

In some ways, it’s a part of being a creative person in the modern world where everybody has a megaphone, and everybody can just scream at you over little things. Like some guy on Twitter got very upset over the font we were using. The font. And he had this whole Twitter thread. And it’s like, I mean, I’m glad you’re passionate about the game at that point, but again, is that really the sword you’re dying on?

Everybody’s gonna have an opinion, especially when you do a game Like Monkey Island, that’s had 30 years of this nostalgia built up for it. And quite frankly, it’s a different thing for everybody. There is no choice that Dave and I could have made that would have made everybody happy … I think if you try to make everybody happy, you just end up with a product that is boring, which is probably what you would get from a focus-tested game. They’re boring on some level. So do we just do what we believe in.

I like the thing you said about the relationship between artists and social media today. Nobody was ever on the internet saying, “Hey, Monet, your paintings are blurry and you suck!”

Grossman: Ron Gilbert bigger than Monet!

In terms of his story, you’ve been upfront that this is the conclusion, this is where we’re wrapping things up.

A close up headshot of Dave Grossman, co creator of Monkey Island.
Monkey Island co-creator Dave Grossman.

Grossman: No.

No? I misread that then.

Gilbert: A lot of people misread that. I’m not sure exactly where that comes from.

(Editor’s note: the official website for Return to Monkey Island features the phrase “The exciting conclusion of the Monkey Island series …”)

People can lie on the internet? No!

Gilbert: Exactly! You can’t print it if it’s not true.

Grossman:: I think somebody poorly chose a word, and it got released.

Gilbert: Yeah, I mean, this might be the last one that David and I make. Who knows? But I just can’t imagine a world where there are no more Monkey Island games.

What would make the two of you want to do another one? Is it just if another couple of decades go by, and you just get the itch to?

Gilbert: Talk to us in 30 years.

Grossman:: I mean yeah, if there was a good story to be told and, and the opportunity was there, do it. I think part of what’s interesting is watching how the story has changed over the decades. The people telling it get older. It will be interesting to see what the story is like when we are 68. It will be about going to bed, mostly.

Gilbert: It’s about getting up to pee five times

iPhone 14 Pro’s new Dynamic Island has its first game idea https://briefnews.eu/iphone-14-pros-new-dynamic-island-has-its-first-game-idea/ https://briefnews.eu/iphone-14-pros-new-dynamic-island-has-its-first-game-idea/#respond Wed, 14 Sep 2022 01:49:51 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/iphone-14-pros-new-dynamic-island-has-its-first-game-idea/ The Dynamic Island that comes with Apple’s new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max handsets caused quite a stir when it was unveiled last week.

The pill-shaped cutout replaces the notch that houses the front camera and Face ID sensors, but has also been designed to animate to become part of the display, transforming its shape when delivering snippets of useful information.

Apple said it will open up the Dynamic Island technology to third-party developers to see what they can do with it, and while we can expect mainstream apps to quickly find ways to incorporate it, smaller developers are already thinking of how they might use it, too.

Spotted by MacRumors, software developer Kriss Smolka has come up with come up with a fun concept game based on the 1970s classic, Pong.

As you can see from Smolka’s tweet, you control the paddle at the bottom of the display, moving left and right to hit the ball. But in contrast to Pong, you want the static paddle at the top, which is actually the Dynamic Island, to hit the ball back.

Who has an iPhone 14 Pro right now? Need to test this on device asap!

🏝️ Hit The Island – our game concept for iPhone 14 Pro, still laggy but it’s turning out nice 🙂 #iPhone14Pro #iOS16 pic.twitter.com/kWLU77gk6d

— Kriss Smolka (@ksmolka) September 13, 2022

At the current time, the ball stays in play wherever it goes, with the player scoring a point every time they hit the opposing paddle. But as it’s a concept, Smolka could end up changing it so the aim is to get as many consecutive hits on the other paddle, or perhaps by adding a countdown clock encouraging you to get as many points in a limited time. It’s also possible that the bar will start off larger and gradually reduce in size with every hit, making it increasingly harder to succeed.

While simple in the extreme, the Pong idea offers an early taste of how developers can get creative with the Dynamic Island and take it beyond Apple’s original idea of using it as a straightforward information hub.

Smolka said he’s trying to have it available in the App Store by Friday, when Apple’s new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max start landing in people’s hands.

And if you love the look of the fun idea but have an iPhone with a plain old notch at the top, don’t fret. Smolka says he’s also working on making a version of his game for those phones, too.

Fantasy Island Reboot Ordered at Fox, to Premiere Summer 2021 https://briefnews.eu/fantasy-island-reboot-ordered-at-fox-to-premiere-summer-2021/ https://briefnews.eu/fantasy-island-reboot-ordered-at-fox-to-premiere-summer-2021/#respond Tue, 15 Dec 2020 17:50:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/fantasy-island-reboot-ordered-at-fox-to-premiere-summer-2021/

Fox has booked a trip to Fantasy Island.

The network has handed a straight-to-series order to a contemporary reboot of the late-’70s/early ’80s ABC drama, to hail from executive producers Liz Craft and Sarah Fain (The 100) and air in summer 2021.

The reimagined Fantasy Island is being billed as a “semi-anthology” series “that delves into the ‘what if’ questions, both big and small, that keep us awake at night,” according to the official logline. “Each episode will tell emotional, provocative stories about people who walk in with a desire, but end up reborn to themselves through the magical realism of Fantasy Island.”

“[W]e’ve been particularly focused on providing viewers with summer series that offer a true escape from everyday life — to be sure, now so more than ever,” Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment at Fox Entertainment, said in a statement. “Fantasy Island is a beloved program, and the world Liz and Sarah have created for this contemporary adaptation is signature Fox and a perfect show for today’s times. After all, who among us wouldn’t take a (safe) trip to Fantasy Island right now?”

In addition to The 100, Craft and Fain’s credits include Angel, Lie to Me, The Shield, The Vampire Diaries and Women’s Murder Club. They most recently co-created the ABC drama The Fix, alongside former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark.

The original Fantasy Island ran for seven seasons on ABC, from 1977 to 1984, and starred Ricardo Montalbán (as Mr. Roarke) and Hervé Villechaize (as his assistant Tattoo). A short-lived reboot featuring Malcolm McDowell and Mädchen Amick aired in 1998, lasting just 13 episodes.

Earlier this year, a feature-length horror adaptation starring Michael Peña, Maggie Q and Lucy Hale grossed nearly $ 50 million at the box office (but earned a dismal seven percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes).

“Love Island will return tonight and will include a tribute to Caroline that the team in South Africa and Iain Stirling have put together.

“Caroline loved Love Island and was very vocal in her support of the show. Viewers could relate to her and she to them and that was a big part of the programme’s success. We will all miss her very much.”

Laura said on her BBC Radio 5 Live show on Sunday: “Anyone who knew Caroline knew she was vivacious, loving and had a passion for life which is why none of this makes sense.

“Caroline loved dancing and Angels by Robbie Williams reminds me of her because she danced to it on Strictly. Caroline loved music, we shared many a dance floor at festivals.

“She loved to laugh and had the most infectious chuckle.”

The Love Island host also added: ”She also had many struggles. I am not going to pretend she was perfect but she lived every mistake publicly. Your words affect people.”

Laura went on to plead with listeners to “be kind in what you say.”

Love Island 2020 continues every weeknight at 9pm on ITV2.

Love Island UK Remembers Presenter Caroline Flack, While ITV Chief Says ‘Door Was Left Open’ for Her Return https://briefnews.eu/love-island-uk-remembers-presenter-caroline-flack-while-itv-chief-says-door-was-left-open-for-her-return/ https://briefnews.eu/love-island-uk-remembers-presenter-caroline-flack-while-itv-chief-says-door-was-left-open-for-her-return/#respond Tue, 18 Feb 2020 00:50:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/love-island-uk-remembers-presenter-caroline-flack-while-itv-chief-says-door-was-left-open-for-her-return/

The UK edition of Love Island resumed its season on Monday, after hitting pause in the wake of former presenter Caroline Flack’s death by suicide late last week, at the age of 40.

Monday’s episode opened with a picturesque montage of waves, shores and beaches (embedded below), as longtime Love Island narrator Iain Stirling said, “We are all absolutely devastated by the tragic news that Caroline, a much-loved member of our Love Island family, has passed away. Like many of you, we are just trying to come to terms with what happened.”

“Caroline, I want to thank you for all the fun times we had making our favorite show,” Stirling said in closing. “You were a true friend to me.”

Flack presided over Love Island UK — which streams Stateside on Hulu — through Season 5. She was removed as host this past December and replaced by Laura Whitmore, following allegations that she assaulted her boyfriend, English tennis player Lewis Burton. Flack was set to stand trial on March 4.

Since Flack’s death, fingers have pointed at the British tabloids, for dogging the personality over the years, as well as Love Island producer ITV, for allegedly not supporting her after her exit. ITV director Kevin Lygo responded with a statement saying, “Caroline was part of Love Island from the very beginning and her passion, dedication and boundless energy contributed to the show’s success. After Caroline stepped down from the show, ITV made it clear that the door was left open for her to return and the Love Island production team remained in regular contact with her and continued to offer support over the last few months.”

“Caroline loved Love Island and was very vocal in her support of the show,” Lygo added. “Viewers could relate to her and she to them and that was a big part of the programme’s success. We will all miss her very much.”

Will Love Island be cancelled? Speculation mounts after Caroline Flack’s tragic death https://briefnews.eu/will-love-island-be-cancelled-speculation-mounts-after-caroline-flacks-tragic-death/ https://briefnews.eu/will-love-island-be-cancelled-speculation-mounts-after-caroline-flacks-tragic-death/#respond Sun, 16 Feb 2020 02:10:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/will-love-island-be-cancelled-speculation-mounts-after-caroline-flacks-tragic-death/

Ms Flack was found dead in her East London home on Saturday. A lawyer for her family confirmed she had taken her own life.

Her death is the third amongst those with close links to ITV reality series Love Island.

Two former contestants, Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, committed suicide after appearing as contestants on the show.

Ms Flack was facing legal action over a domestic dispute involving her boyfriend.

Fans have questioned whether Love Island should continue after Ms Flack’s tragic passing.

Veteran television presenter Eamonn Holmes tweeted: “Caroline Flack… Dear God.

“Shocked beyond belief. May she have found peace.

“Has to be repercussions for Love Island now surely?”

Rebeckah Vaughan, a former Big Brother contestant, called for urgent action.

It said: “Everybody at Love Island and ITV is shocked and saddened by this desperately sad news.

“Caroline was a much loved member of the Love Island team and our sincere thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends.”

Following Ms Flack’s death a planned broadcast of ‘Love Island: Unseen Bits’ on ITV was cancelled.

The ITV announcer said: “In light of today’s sad news we’re replacing tonight’s episode of Love Island: Unseen Bits with a double bill of You’ve Been Framed.”

It is unclear whether an episode of Love Island will be broadcast tonight as scheduled.

Last year ITV released new mental health guidance for Love Island participants including a minimum of eight therapy sessions per contestant after they returned to the UK.

The current incarnation of Love Island began broadcasting in 2015 on ITV2, a revival of an earlier show that aired in 2005 and 2006.

The show is currently on its sixth series, with 237 episodes having been broadcast.

Love Island is filmed on Mallorca, an island off the coast of Spain.

Since broadcasts began it has become one of ITV’s most popular shows with a fanbase not just in the UK but globally.

Death in Paradise: Ralf Little wants 20 YEARS more on Caribbean murder island https://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-ralf-little-wants-20-years-more-on-caribbean-murder-island/ https://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-ralf-little-wants-20-years-more-on-caribbean-murder-island/#respond Fri, 07 Feb 2020 01:50:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-ralf-little-wants-20-years-more-on-caribbean-murder-island/

The actor joined the murder mystery series last night as DI Neville Parker and said the long hours and fierce humidity in Guadeloupe make it tough for everyone involved.

But he wants a longer stint than previous stars like Kris Marshall and Ardal O’Hanlon, who each stayed three years in the lead role.

Ralf, who plays the fourth British detective to find himself investigating murders on the fictional Saint Marie, said: “I mean, my missus might have an opinion on this, but I’d be happy doing it for 20 years.”

He joined current regulars Don Warrington, Tobi Bakare, Shyko Amos, Aude Legastelois and Elizabeth Bourgine in the series.

“I have to say, I slightly irritated everybody… I arrive and I’m like, ‘Hey, how great is this? Aren’t we lucky. Aren’t we the luckiest people in the world?’

“It’s hard because it’s hot and it’s long hours and it’s a physically demanding and mentally demanding thing to do. And, you’re away from home a lot.

“But you know, I’ve got no kids, no responsibilities. My girlfriend’s American, so I’m often in the States anyway. So, I don’t get home sick. I’m used to it. And so, life-wise, I’m strategically in the perfect position to do the show.

“It’s very difficult to convince people that it’s not just the biggest party ever. But, you know, it’s not – it’s hard work.

“But I just sat and I loved it.”

Referring to the enthusiastic reaction to his appointment, Ralf hinted this could be the part that people remember him for, as well as playing teenager Anthony in The Royle Family.

He told the Series Linked podcast: “The Royle Family? I wouldn’t change it for all the money in the world. But it was 20 years ago. I’m about to turn 40 and… this is really exciting for me because it feels like the start of a new chapter.”

But the actor says his confidence has waned as he has aged.

“When I was younger I was like, ‘I’m brilliant at this. I can do anything.’ Now, I’m like, ‘Can I? Oh, was that okay?’”

Davis calls Barnier’s bluff over Brexit trade deal – ‘Germany call us TREASURE island!’ https://briefnews.eu/davis-calls-barniers-bluff-over-brexit-trade-deal-germany-call-us-treasure-island/ https://briefnews.eu/davis-calls-barniers-bluff-over-brexit-trade-deal-germany-call-us-treasure-island/#respond Thu, 23 Jan 2020 18:14:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/davis-calls-barniers-bluff-over-brexit-trade-deal-germany-call-us-treasure-island/

Tory MP David Davis explained the EU is already showing cracks in their Brexit trade negotiation tactics. While on ITV Good Morning Britain (GMB) Mr Davis explained the UK had other nations like Japan very interested in trade deals with Britain post-Brexit. He added the EU will eventually cave in and give the UK a great trade deal as they consider the UK “Treasure Island” because of how much money they make from the country.

Mr Davis said: “We actually have a whole load of options out there.

“We have got the Trans-Pacific Partnership, that probably will happen on January 1.

“The Trans-Pacific Partnership is an organisation of countries, mostly around the Pacific ocean, not entirely, it does not include America but it does include Japan.

“Japan is desperate for us to be a part of it.

DON’T MISS: ‘It’s OVER!’ Iain Duncan Smith silences SNP MP in Independence row

“Why do they want that? Because when we come along a load of other countries will think to join as well.

“That is a big partnership for us and it is big on services.”

GMB panel guest Kevin Maguire then raised the point about us not doing as much trade with the European Union.

Mr Davis quickly replied: “It is £200billion us to them and £300billion them to us.

“They are saying, oh we are not going to give as good a deal as Japan or other countries.

“Why would they do that, when we are right on their doorstep, The EU sells more to us than we do to them.

“They call us ‘Treasure Island’ because they make so much money here.

“That is what the Germans call us, Treasure Island.

“They are not going to walk away from that, so this is the time.”
