An Indonesian court has sentenced to death Aman Abdurrahman, a cleric considered to be the ideological leader of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah, the Indonesian supporters of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). He was convicted of masterminding several militant attacks across the country, Reuters reported. Russian special forces have neutralized the leader of an Islamic State-affiliated cell in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, which had been operating in the mountainous region of the North Caucasus. On Saturday afternoon, authorities in Dagestan received a tip that a gunman, allegedly wanted on terrorism charges, was taking shelter in a private house in Andi village, in the Botlikh district. Based on the tip-off, Dagestan’s Federal Security Service (FSB) chief ordered the counter-terrorist operation. The FSB, supported by the National Guard and local police, surrounded the house. After repeated attempts to convince the terrorist suspect to lay down arms and surrender, the special forces stormed the building. The suspect was “neutralized in a fight,” the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) said on Saturday. “A sniper rifle and ammo, a grenade, a radio transceiver and thermal imaging camera were recovered on the scene.” “There are no casualties among civilians and law enforcers,” the NAC added. According to FSB intelligence, Saturday’s counter-terrorist operation neutralized a local terrorist gang leader, Yunus Khabibob. “He is said to pledge allegiance to the ISIS [Islamic State] and followed its orders as a ringleader of the gang that had previously operated in a mountainous and forested area,” the NAC said, adding that Khabibob had been on a federal wanted list. Think your friends would be interested? Share this story! The hostage-taker at the supermarket in southern France has claimed allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS) AFP cited the prosecutor’s office as saying. A police operation is underway in the area. READ MORE: Shooting & hostage-taking reported at supermarket in south France, police op underway At least two people were injured inside the supermarket, Mayor of Trebes Eric Menassi told BFMTV, calling the situation “a terrible drama.” The man was shouting “Allahu Akbar” when he entered the supermarket, a witness told Europe 1. The perpetrator allegedly shouted that he was “an Islamic State soldier,” according to witnesses. The incident took place in the town of Trebes in the south of the country, the French Interior Ministry said on Twitter. Local residents told the LCI TV channel that they saw many police and gendarmerie units deployed around the supermarket. Responding to the incident, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe called the situation “very serious.” Interior Minister Gerard Collomb tweeted that he was heading to the scene of the incident. Minutes before the hostage situation began in the supermarket, a police officer was shot by a gunman while jogging in nearby Carcassonne commune, AFP reported. The shooter opened fire from his car. It is unclear whether the two incidents are connected.
Italian prosecutors in the city of Turin have failed to jail five suspected members of an ISIS-linked cell, “ready to commit a terrorist attack” on Italian soil, citing a law that grants them the right to appeal a custody warrant.
The efforts to capture the suspected jihadists have been dragging on for at least six months, Italian news agency ANSA reports. In May, Turin public prosecutor Andrea Padalino asked the court to arrest the suspects and further place them into custody, but his petition was rejected by a preliminary investigative judge. Padalino then successfully appealed the decision to the upper court, which in its ruling on November 10 greenlighted the move.
However, the prosecutor’s quest is far over, as he will now have to wait if the suspects, three of whom are under house arrest for drug offenses and two are free, decide to contest the ruling.
By law, the defendants have 10 days to file an appeal with the Supreme Court, which can potentially further prolong the probe if it accepts the motion. In case of an appeal, it is not the essence of the allegations that will be reviewed, but the legality of the order itself, according to ANSA.
All the suspects came to Italy from Tunisia in 2014 and were granted residence permits after duping the authorities into believing that they had enrolled into a university and passed some exams. Upon securing their stay, the men then moved to the city of Pisa, where they engaged in an illicit drug trade.
The court of appeals said it took into account that at least one of the suspects was found to be “ready to commit a terrorist action on Italian territory,” while all of them “expressed adherence to the ideology of extremist and violent jihad,” Corriere Della Sera reported. The men reportedly kept in touch with other extremists on social media, hailed slain jihadist fighters as martyrs and provided “legal and economic assistance” to the arrested militants and sought to facilitate the travel of aspiring jihadists to war zones.
The court argued that the evidence pointed to the fact that the Tunisians were not merely indoctrinated, but actually members of a terrorist cell, some members of which went to Syria and were killed there.
The investigation into the group was launched after Italian military police examined the Facebook page of one of the suspects in a series of drug-dealing episodes. The police then found out that the man was in steady contact with ISIS militants and even promised some of his friends to follow in the footsteps of his killed ISIS friends by mounting a suicide bomb attack in Italy. The man was later arrested in Tuscany, La Stampa reported.
With the investigation being stuck in red tape since then, two of the initial suspects managed to sneak out to Syria and are believed to have been killed there. Another one is said to have been expelled from Italy in 2016.

An Islamic State-linked group has allegedly vowed to launch a Christmas terrorist attack on the Vatican. A propaganda poster depicted a jihadist driving a car at high speed towards St. Peter’s Basilica.
The menacing poster was released by the pro-Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) group known as Wafa Media Foundation. It was revealed on Tuesday by the SITE Intelligence Group, a Maryland-based company that tracks the online activity of the extremist organization. The words at the top of the poster, written in red, warn that the attack will take place at Christmas.
The image shows a masked figure, apparently a jihadist, driving at high speed towards St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where Pope Francis usually celebrates Mass. An assault rifle and a rucksack are clearly visible on the seat next to the driver, who is using a satellite navigation system.
This is not the first time that the extremist group has vowed to carry out attacks against the Vatican. Last August, IS reportedly released footage of its militants ripping up photos of Pope Francis and his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI; and threatening to come to Rome.
The video is understood to have been filmed in the city of Marawi in the Philippines, where the Maute group, which has pledged allegiance to IS, was fighting against government forces.
The threat from IS terrorists has tended to heighten at Christmas time. In 2016, an IS sympathizer deliberately drove a truck into the Christmas market in Berlin, leaving 12 people dead and dozens injured. The perpetrator, Anis Amri, turned out to be a rejected asylum seeker from Tunisia. He was killed days later in a shootout with police near Milan, Italy.
There has been a rise in terrorist attacks using vehicles in Europe and the US. Nice, Berlin, London, Stockholm, Barcelona, as well as New York have all endured attacks of this kind.

The US military has carried out airstrikes in northeastern Somalia, both Somali and US officials reported. They said the raid targeted fighters affiliated with Islamic State.
According to an unidentified US official, at least two airstrikes were carried out on Friday. The alleged attack is the first US mission against the terrorist group in the East African country.

The leader made the announcement on Saturday while visiting an army base on Jolo Island in Sulu province. Philippine troops are currently battling Abu Sayyaf jihadist militants, who have pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) on the island.
“I will hire you as soldiers – same pay, same privileges, and I will build houses for you in some areas,” Duterte said, addressing separatist groups, according to a video released on Sunday, Reuters and local media report.
Duterte made the offer to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) which both fight for the independence of the Muslim Moro people, who constitute about 5 percent of the Philippine population.
Both groups have signed numerous deals with the Philippine government since the 1960s, but the agreements have not been fully implemented.
According to the Philippine president, the idea of separatists and troops fighting together against jihadists came from Nur Misuari, the founder and leader of the MNLF. He said that Misuari sent him a letter, saying that MNLF fighters could volunteer to join the fighting in the city of Marawi and other parts of Lanao del Sur province.
Since Tuesday, armed forces have been clashing with Maute jihadists linked to Islamic State who have taken over large parts of the city of Marawi on the island of Mindanao.
He also made a similar offer to the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). Duterte asked the Maoists to abandon their guerrilla war and work with the authorities.
“If this drags on, and you want to join, take your chance with the Republic [of the Philippines],” Duterte said.
There has been no reaction from leaders of the separatist groups so far.
The fighting on Mindanao erupted following a raid on the alleged hideout of Isnilon Hapilon, a head of Abu Sayyaf. In 2014, Hapilon pledged allegiance to IS.
The majority of Marawi’s 200,000 residents have fled, but 2,000 remain trapped in areas controlled by the fighters, Zia Alonto Adiong, spokesman for the provincial crisis management committee, said on Sunday, as cited by AFP.
“They want to leave. They are afraid for their safety. Some are running out of food to eat. They fear they will be hit by bullets, by airstrikes,” he said.
Deaths in Marawi have now exceeded 100, with the number including at least 27 civilians and 61 terrorists.

At least 27 civilians have been killed in Marawi since Maute fighters, aligned with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), raided the city last Tuesday.
This figure includes the latest victims – eight males, whose bodies were discovered with gunshot wounds to their heads on a roadside in the outskirts of Marawi on Sunday. According to locals, the victims were civilians who worked at a rice mill and a medical college and had attempted to flee the city.
A signed note attached to one of the men indicated that the victims had “betrayed their faith,” police officer Jamail Mangadang told the Philippine Star.
In another discovery, the bodies of four men, three women and a child were found on Saturday near a university in the city.
“These are civilians, women. These terrorists are anti-people. We found their bodies while conducting rescue operations,” regional military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera said, according to Manila Standard.
In addition to the civilian casualties, Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said a total of 11 soldiers and four police officers have been killed since the fierce fighting erupted last Tuesday.
The military says it has killed at least 61 Maute fighters, bringing the total death toll to over 100 people.
The militants seemed significantly weakened by the ongoing military operation and are showing less resistance, but still pose grave danger to locals, Padilla said.
“We believe they’re now low on ammunition and food,” he said. “Compared to the initial days, there has been increasingly less resistance from the militants within Marawi.”
In tandem to the military onslaught, the army was also carrying out rescues operations, freeing civilians trapped in jihadist-held areas and bringing them to safety.
“We have successfully rescued and assisted 124 trapped civilian residents since the start of the operations,” Padilla said.
President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law across the southern part of the Philippines after IS-linked militants stormed the city last Tuesday.
Most of the predominantly Muslim city’s 200,000 residents have fled since the fighting began, but an estimated 2,000 people still remain cornered in areas controlled by the militants.
“They have been sending us text messages, calling our hotline, requesting us to send rescue teams but we cannot simply go to areas which are inaccessible to us,” said Zia Alonto Adiong, spokesman for the provincial crisis management committee.
“They want to leave. They are afraid for their safety. Some are running out of food to eat. They fear they will be hit by bullets, by airstrikes,” he added.
The military intensified its air campaign on parts of Marawi over the weekend as ground troops engaged in street battles with the militants.
Philippines government officials also said that the Maute group confronting the army was no longer considered a local terrorist organization as many Malaysian, Indonesian and “other nationalities” have joined their ranks.
Driving out terrorists from the Philippines has become Duterte’s personal crusade who promised to resign if extremists prove him incapable of maintaining peace in his country.
“As president, if I cannot confront them, I will resign,” Duterte said last week. “If I am incompetent and incapable of keeping order in this country, let me step down and give the job to somebody else.”

The operation comes as the city enters the fifth day of a siege by government forces.
“We are trying to use our maximum force,” Reuters quoted Mindanao Command Chief Major General Carlito Galvez as saying.
“The main purpose of the offensive is to suppress the lawlessness and to maintain normalcy in Marawi so that our people here, our countrymen, can return, especially by Ramadan,” he said, adding that he hopes the city would be cleared within three days.
Since Tuesday, Philippines armed forces have been clashing with the local Maute group affiliated with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), which has taken over large parts of Marawi on the island of Mindanao. The fighting erupted after a raid on the alleged hideout of Isnilon Hapilon, a head of Abu Sayyaf, another rebel group on Mindanao. In 2014, Hapilon pledged allegiance to ISIS.
“It is painful for the Maranao [name used for Mindanao residents] that it is Ramadan but our action now is to protect Marawi. These are the impacts of the local terrorist group’s actions,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera said, DW reports.
IS’ Amaq news agency reported that its militants were responsible for the unrest in Marawi.
“I saw them near the highway. I saw ISIS there. I could tell because they wore black headbands with the ISIS signs,” Reuters cited a man named Musa, who was fleeing Marawi, as saying.
Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law for 60 days on the Philippines’ second-largest island, Mindanao, home to a Muslim minority.
The president has previously warned that he would not hesitate to extend martial law throughout the whole nation if necessary.
In a bid to retake Marawi, government troops neutralized at least 41 Maute fighters, including militants of Malaysian and Indonesian origin, according to a military spokesman, as cited by Reuters. On the government side, 13 soldiers have been killed, with 45 wounded.
Officials fear losses among civilians, AP reports. Up to 90 percent of Marawi’s population of 200,000 has fled, while those left in the city wave white flags to signal they are not militants.
“[The rebels’] refusal to surrender is holding the city captive. Hence, it is now increasingly becoming necessary to use more surgical airstrikes to clear the city and to bring this rebellion to a quicker end,” AP quoted a military statement as saying.
On Friday, President Duterte urged the militants to start negotiations, saying that they could “still solve this through dialogue.”
“And if you cannot be convinced to stop fighting, so be it. Let’s just fight,” he said.

Philippines special forces launched an attack on Islamist militant positions in Marawi City early Thursday morning in a bid to retake the city from the ISIS-affiliated Maute group. The operation involved ground troops supported by attack helicopters.
“We’re confronting maybe 30 to 40 remaining from the local terrorist group,” said Jo-Ar Herrera, spokesman for the military’s First Infantry Regiment, as cited by Reuters.
“The military is conducting precise, surgical operations to flush them out… The situation is very fluid and movements are dynamic because we wanted to out-step and outmaneuver them.”
Ground troops engaged Maute fighters – affiliated to IS (Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL) – while attack helicopters bombarded their positions from above with heavy machine gun fire and rockets.
Some 18 rebels and six soldiers were killed in the operation according to an army spokesperson cited by Reuters.
RT reached out to Marawi resident and eyewitness Chico Dimaro Usman who has captured the carnage in detail, uploading images and video to Facebook.
Maute fighters have torched buildings throughout the city including a jail, a cathedral and a local school, Dansalan College.
The coordinated air and ground operations began at roughly 9am Usman said.
The air raids continued throughout the morning into mid-afternoon but Usman captured both raids on camera.
RT has corroborated that the videos were taken in the region through comparisons of local topography in the videos with imagery from Google Earth.
Local weather reports confirm roughly 90 percent cloud cover in the area around Marawi City which matches the footage taken by Usman.
RT obtained private statements from Usman confirming that he is in the area. Out of concern for his and his family’s safety, RT is not disclosing his exact location at this time.
So far, a total of 46 people including 15 security forces and 31 Maute fighters have been killed in Marawi City reports Reuters.
