  • Geno Smith appeared to embrace flat Earth theories in a series of tweets on Saturday.
  • Smith took time to retweet arguments from both sides of the debate, encouraging people to question the “truths” laid before them.
  • In the end, Smith walked back his original comments slightly, claiming that the tweets were all in the name of starting conversation.

Geno Smith made news on Saturday before the NFL offseason could even start, but it had nothing to do with his future in football.

The New York Giants quarterback, like Kyrie Irving before him, appeared to embrace flat Earth theories in a series of tweets, asking his followers not to believe everything that they read and do their own research before rushing to judgment.

It started as a viral bit. Basketball star Kyrie Irving donned some old-age make-up, a fat suit, and a white wig to play “Uncle Drew,” a washed-up basketball player who shows up to a local game and shows up all the young players. He debuted in a Pepsi Max ad that was presented as documentary-style “chapters” — which later came together as a 20-minute short film. The videos soon went viral and and went on to be one of the most popular ads that aired at the NBA finals.

Now, Uncle Drew is getting his own movie.

Kyrie Irving reprises his role as Uncle Drew in the Uncle Drew movie, which follows Get Out‘s Lil Rel Howery as he begs his uncle to help him beat the reigning team at a tournament. But Uncle Drew has one condition: he wants to bring in his own team.

Uncle Drew Trailer

Cue Kyrie Irving leading a team of NBA basketball legends in old-age make-up, including Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, and Nate Robinson. But non-sports fans can get excited for this movie too — Uncle Drew boasts some comedy heavyweights like Girls Trip breakout star Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll as the team’s rival, and of course, Get Out scene-stealer Lil Rel Howery.

But temper your expectations Haddish fans: it’s obvious that Uncle Drew was filmed before she shot to fame after Girls Trip, as the actress seems to have barely more than a brief supporting role. It’s not quite the highly anticipated follow-up role to Girls Trip — the film doesn’t even appear on her IMDB page.

Uncle Drew is Irving’s feature film debut, but he seems to be perfectly comfortable in the role that helped launch him to viral fame. Here’s the first chapter of the 2012 viral short.

Here is the official synopsis for Uncle Drew:

After draining his life savings to enter a team in the Rucker Classic street ball tournament in Harlem, Dax (Lil Rel Howery) is dealt a series of unfortunate setbacks, including losing his team to his longtime rival (Nick Kroll). Desperate to win the tournament and the cash prize, Dax stumbles upon the man, the myth, the legend UNCLE DREW (NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving) and convinces him to return to the court one more time. The two men embark on a road trip to round up Drew’s old basketball squad (Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie) and prove that a group of septuagenarians can still win the big one.

Uncle Drew is set to hit theaters on June 29, 2018.

Kyrie Irving: Boston Celtics star backed to win MVP after exploding for 47 points https://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-boston-celtics-star-backed-to-win-mvp-after-exploding-for-47-points/ https://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-boston-celtics-star-backed-to-win-mvp-after-exploding-for-47-points/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 05:28:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-boston-celtics-star-backed-to-win-mvp-after-exploding-for-47-points/

The Celtics moved to 16 games unbeaten after a sensational comeback victory over the Mavericks and it was Irving who stole the show.

He missed just one shot in the first half but it looked like Dallas would clinch an unlikely victory after growing their lead to as large as 13 in the fourth quarter.

But the Celtics rallied back with Jayson Tatum levelling the score at 96-96.

Dallas had a chance to win the game with close to the last possession of the game but Harrison Barnes was unable to connect with his jumper, taking the game into overtime.

And Irving took over once more, scoring 10 of Boston’s 12 points to ensure the victory.

Boston fans could be heard chanting MVP towards Irving as he made his way off the court.

And that swiftly transcended into fans on Twitter flooding the social media feed with reasons why they believe he should be MVP.

One fan said: “Why are people not putting Kyrie Irving in the MVP conversation? Kyrie with or without the mask is the reason why the Celtics is on a 16 game winning streak!!!”

While another couldn’t quite contain their excitement: “But my goodness, Kyrie Irving is my MVP currently. The kid just can’t be stopped.”

The Milwaukee Bucks trolled Kyrie Irving after he mistakenly thought their throwback-painted court was the real thing https://briefnews.eu/the-milwaukee-bucks-trolled-kyrie-irving-after-he-mistakenly-thought-their-throwback-painted-court-was-the-real-thing/ https://briefnews.eu/the-milwaukee-bucks-trolled-kyrie-irving-after-he-mistakenly-thought-their-throwback-painted-court-was-the-real-thing/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 21:42:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-milwaukee-bucks-trolled-kyrie-irving-after-he-mistakenly-thought-their-throwback-painted-court-was-the-real-thing/ Kyrie IrvingMaddie Meyer/Getty Images

  • The Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics will play on Thursday night in a throwback game that will also include a throwback-themed court.
  • Celtics guard Kyrie Irving was suspicious of the court, and seemed to have thought that it was the actual court the Bucks used in the ’80s, rather than a replica.
  • The Bucks’ social media team had a bit of fun with the moment, assuring Irving that the court was brand new.

When it was announced that the Milwaukee Bucks would be bringing back their “Mecca” court design for Thursday night’s game against the Boston Celtics, many basketball fans were filled with a combination and excitement and nostalgic warmth.

But now that the court is a reality, there’s at least one player who isn’t sure the experiment is worth the risk.

The Celtics’ All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who made headlines last season when revealed that he believes the Earth is flat, expressed a bit of distrust for the throwback court ahead of the game.

“I’m all about safety,” Irving told reporters during the team’s shootaround Thursday morning, according to Boston.com.

“We’ll see how it is on my knees, see how it is on everyone’s bodies,” he said. “I know that this is a pretty older court. It looks like it’s freshly painted as well. I’m just going to do my assessment and go from there.”

The comment seems to imply that Irving missed an important bit of information — that the court was not literally the same court that the Bucks used to play on, but rather a replica made with the same wood and painted to match the original design.

Yet even when told that the court is new, Irving wasn’t convinced.

“Yeah, it took me three steps to realize that this is not the same NBA court that I’m used to playing on,” he said.

In response, the Bucks’ official Twitter account lightly trolled Irving, releasing a video that details the creation of the court and reassuring those that might doubt it that it is indeed a brand new floor.

Here’s how we made it: pic.twitter.com/GjtsIDts2A

It’s likely that this was a simple misunderstanding on Irving’s part, and the Bucks were just having a bit of fun with the moment, but it’s also possible that he will later claim that the whole thing was a “social experiment,” as he did with his flat Earth comments earlier in the year.

Kyrie Irving makes Boston Celtics debut: Highlights from pre-season game against Hornets https://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-makes-boston-celtics-debut-highlights-from-pre-season-game-against-hornets/ https://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-makes-boston-celtics-debut-highlights-from-pre-season-game-against-hornets/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 03:43:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-makes-boston-celtics-debut-highlights-from-pre-season-game-against-hornets/

Brad Stevens was debuting a new look Boston Celtics side this evening in their first pre-season match against the Charlotte Hornets with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward taking the floor.

Fans were watching in anticipation to catch the first glimpse of Irving in a Celtics uniform and he gave them a little taste of what’s to come from the former Cleveland Cavaliers point guard.

He finished with a box score of nine points, four rebounds and three assists and also marked his debut with a rare dunk after a give-and-go with Al Horford.

The 25-year-old only attempted two dunks last season but proved his versatility to the Celtic’s unit with an array of dribble moves and difficult finishes in the paint.

When asked how it felt to make his first appearance in a Boston Celtics uniform after the game, Irving said: “It felt good.

“Unofficially in pre-season but I’m just getting started.

“I felt like I was on another platform out here on the TD garden for the first time.

“Eyes wide – just trying to get things going. Rusty as hell but it was good to play some NBA basketball again.”

Stevens chose to rest his three top stars – Irving, Hayward and Horford – for the second half, giving the young talent a chance to shine.

Jayson Tatum, the No3 pick in the 2017 draft, was handed 32 minutes in his first Celtics appearance and took time to settle but eventually finished with a 9-5-5 box score.

Kyrie Irving on why he didn’t talk to LeBron James when he requested a trade from Cleveland: ‘Why would I have to?’ https://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-on-why-he-didnt-talk-to-lebron-james-when-he-requested-a-trade-from-cleveland-why-would-i-have-to/ https://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-on-why-he-didnt-talk-to-lebron-james-when-he-requested-a-trade-from-cleveland-why-would-i-have-to/#respond Mon, 18 Sep 2017 22:31:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kyrie-irving-on-why-he-didnt-talk-to-lebron-james-when-he-requested-a-trade-from-cleveland-why-would-i-have-to/ kyrie irvingDavid Zalubowski/AP

Now a member of the Boston Celtics, Kyrie Irving admitted on ESPN’s “First Take” on Monday that he did not inform LeBron James of his trade request, nor did he feel the need to.

The NBA world was rocked by Irving’s trade request from the Cleveland Cavaliers in July, and soon thereafter, reports came out that said Irving no longer wanted to play second-fiddle to James.

On “First Take,” Irving admitted he wanted to be “selfish” with his decision to play for another team and said he did not think he had to talk to James about it first.

Here’s the transcript of the conversation with Stephen A. Smith:

Smith: Did you speak to LeBron James or talk to LeBron James before you and your representatives met with ownership before you let them know you wanted out?

Irving: No.

Smith: Why not?

Irving: Why would I have to?

Smith: I’m not implying that you have to at all … If you don’t speak to somebody about it, they might take it personally.

Irving: Yeah.

Smith: Do you care about that at all?

Irving: No.

Here is the video of the exchange:

Irving later said: “I don’t think you owe anything to another person in terms of figuring out what you want to do with your life. It’s not anything personal.”

Though some Cavs players have down-played the events leading to Irving’s trade request, from the sounds of it, Irving did want to go lead a team on his own. He said at his introductory press conference with the Celtics that he had not spoken to James.

Perhaps there really isn’t any ill will between James and Irving and perhaps they will speak in the near future. But in the meantime, Irving’s blunt response only makes the Cavs-Celtics season-opening game that much more interesting.

Cavs send Irving to Celtics for Thomas https://briefnews.eu/cavs-send-irving-to-celtics-for-thomas/ https://briefnews.eu/cavs-send-irving-to-celtics-for-thomas/#respond Wed, 23 Aug 2017 13:53:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cavs-send-irving-to-celtics-for-thomas/

Kyrie Irving was tired of being teammates with LeBron James.

Now he has to figure out how to beat him.

Cleveland’s All-Star guard, who asked owner Dan Gilbert to trade him earlier this summer, was dealt Tuesday night to the Boston Celtics in exchange for star guard Isaiah Thomas, forward Jae Crowder, centre Ante Zizic and a 2018 first-round draft pick.

Irving, whose late 3-pointer helped Cleveland win the 2016 NBA championship — and the city’s first title since 1964 — is on his way to Boston, where he’ll join a Celtics team that lost to the Cavs in last season’s conference finals.

And as fate will have it, the Cavs will host the Celtics in their season opener on Oct. 17.

“Kyrie is one of the best scorers in the NBA,” Celtics president Danny Ainge said. “He has proven that on the biggest stage, the NBA Finals, the last three years. He’s been an NBA champion, an Olympic gold medallist , and a four-time All-Star. For all he’s accomplished, we think his best years are ahead of him.”

Cleveland salvages off-season

The blockbuster deal caps a wild summer for the Cavs, who lost their title defence in five games to Golden State in June. Since then, general manager David Giffin left, the team failed to convince Chauncey Billups to join its front office and James has played with fans’ emotions with veiled postings on social media about his future.

Irving’s trade demand cast a dark shadow over the entire organization.

But Cleveland may have salvaged its off-season with this trade.

In Thomas, they’re getting a proven playmaker with a stellar reputation. The 5-foot-9 guard is one of the league’s most dynamic backcourt players with an uncanny ability to get to the basket. Irving may be the only better finisher among point guards.

The 28-year-old Thomas was taken with the final pick in the second round in 2011, but he has steadily scaled his way up to elite status.

His reputation in Boston was cemented when he led the Celtics through the playoffs last season despite the death of his sister on the eve of the post-season. He also had a front tooth knocked out during the second-round series against Washington and a hip injury eventually forced the team to shut him down early in the East finals, won by the Cavaliers in five games.

“Isaiah embodied what it meant to be a Celtic,” Ainge said. “He captured fans’ hearts not only with his spirit, but his personality. Jae’s toughness was contagious for our team. He improved his skills each year, but it’s his energy and fight that will be remembered. We wish them and their families the very best.”

Expects max contract

Thomas is eligible for free agency next summer and believes he is worthy of a maximum contract. He has been quoted saying, “They better bring out the Brinks truck.”

Cleveland also is getting Crowder, a solid perimeter defender, and a first-round pick that Boston got from Brooklyn. The package could help the Cavs reload if James opts out of his contract next summer and leaves Cleveland for a second time.

The Cavs drafted Irving with the No. 1 overall pick in 2011. He struggled in his first few seasons but blossomed in recent years alongside James. However, that didn’t seem to be enough for the 25-year-old, who has wanted to be the prime player and focal point on his own team.

Minnesota showed some interest in Irving after his trade request became public, but were unwilling to part with young star Andrew Wiggins as the centerpiece of a deal. Wiggins is expected to sign a max contract extension in the coming weeks to stay with the Timberwolves.

The Phoenix Suns reportedly were not interested in parting with rookie Josh Jackson in a deal that also would have required Eric Bledsoe and the New York Knicks gave no indication that Kristaps Porzingis was ever on the table in a potential Irving trade.

Then the Celtics swooped in, landing the kind of star Ainge has long coveted. With the possibility of having to break the bank to retain Thomas next summer, Boston finally tapped into the treasure trove of assets that Ainge has assembled to get Irving, who is under contract for two more years.

Irving got his wish to get away from James, but he’s not free of him yet.

Kyrie Irving #2 of the Cleveland Cavaliers has requested a trade, per ESPN.

Staff writersFOX SPORTS

KYRIE Irving has dropped one of the most stunning trade bombshells in NBA history, requesting a move away from the Cavaliers – largely because of LeBron James.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst broke the story, reporting that Irving requested the trade last week directly to Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. Irving expressed a desire to break free of James and be a bigger “focal point” for a team.

ESPN also reported that Irving had supplied a list of teams he would be happy to be traded to, which included the New York Knicks – who are currently trying to deal with Carmelo Anthony’s desire to be traded (Houston the preferred destination, at this stage).

Adrian Wojnarowski then reported Irving’s interest in joining the San Antonio Spurs, who have legend Tony Parker and Aussie Patty Mills at point guard.

Windhorst wrote of LeBron’s reaction: “James was informed of Irving’s request and was blindsided and disappointed, sources said. Other members of the team have learned of Irving’s intentions in recent days as well.”

Irving, No.1 pick for the Cavs in the 2011 draft, expressed misgivings about the franchise recently in a Sports Illustrated interview. Cleveland has barely added to its roster this off-season, having been soundly beaten by Golden State in last season’s NBA Finals.

“We just have to, you know, make sure that all our pieces are aligned first, and then we go from there,” Irving told the magazine. “It’s the summertime, a lot of craziness going on in the NBA.”

Irving has three years and $ 60 million left on his contract. He can opt out for free agency in 2019. Meanwhile, James – who has been touted to again leave Cleveland amid unrest with the franchise – is a free agent after next season, making the Irving situation even more delicate.

Irving averages 21.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game across his career. Last season, he averaged a career-high 25.2 points and 5.8 assists per game. He is a four-time All Star.

Outmatched by the Warriors, James and Irving nonetheless put on an offensive spectacle for the second year in a row, scoring 67 combined points in Game 5 after scoring 71 combined points in Game 4 and 77 combined points in Game 3.

After Game 5, James said he could accept the Finals loss because he knows he gave it his all. It seems fair to assume the same of Irving, who was dazzling offensively at times.

After Game 5, Irving spoke at length at how James’ work effort inspires him and how he hopes to maintain their relationship for years to come (via Sports Illustrated’s Ben Golliver).

“Man, that guy is — I think that some people would say he’s on the toe of — like he’s on the line of greatness. But that guy is way over. Man, he’s freaking awesome. As a student of the game, it would be a disservice to myself if I didn’t try to learn as much as possible while I’m playing with this guy. Every single day demanding more out of himself, demanding more out of us, the true testament of a consummate professional. And understanding how things work, not only just in the game, but off the court, things that matter, just taking care of your body, understanding the magnitude of what the goal is at hand and what steps it takes in order to achieve that goal.

“You can’t skip any steps. And that was one thing that I came to understand, because as a young player you want everything to happen right now. And ‘Bron’s been in this league for a while now, and he’s seen every which way from on the court, to off the court, to dealing with some of you guys, to dealing with the whole world of just choosing a side. Whether you want to believe him or not, he’s still coming.

“And that’s the type of guy that I want to be with every single time I’m going to war, because I know what to expect, and you stand your ground, too, with a leader like that. You don’t want to take a step back. You move to the front line with a guy like that, and you want to bring your game up to another level.

“That’s what I’m going to continue to do, because I know that if we continue to be with one another and keep utilizing one another, man, the sky’s the limit.”

Irving added another thought about what James accomplished, at age 32, in his seventh straight Finals, even in a losing effort.

“He left it all out there on the floor, and to average a triple-double in the freaking Finals, man — add that to the LeBron long list that everyone keeps forgetting.”

It’s unclear what the Cavs’ future holds. There are already murmurs of James’ dedication to the team. They have few means of drastically improving this offseason, and some think they need to drastically improve to contend with the Warriors.

One thing that seems certain, however, is the James-Irving duo is one that should be kept together for a long time.
