For many, BBC radio is synonymous with driving. When you’re stuck in a traffic jam, holiday road trip or boring post-work commute, sometimes the best company is a never-ending playlist punctuated with cheerful DJ chatter. For the longest time, that’s meant FM airwaves, but now of course you can use the iPlayer Radio app too. Today, the BBC is going one step further with support for Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto platforms. If you have a compatible in-car entertainment system, or don’t mind sticking your Android phone to the dashboard, you can now use these large, touch-friendly interfaces while you’re out on the road.

Both the CarPlay and Android Auto versions of iPlayer Radio come with four main sections. “Stations” lists all of the national and local stations broadcasting live across the UK. Downloads, meanwhile, is an offline playlist filled with shows and performances that you’ve previously bookmarked online or through the app. Listen Later contains all the episodes you’ve added to, well, Listen Later (it’s supposed to be like your very own station) and Following is a shortcut to shows you’ve subscribed to. Both platforms have simplified, touch-friendly layouts, and with Android Auto you can use your voice to move around the menus.

BBC iPlayer has been given an impressive new update, with a treasure trove of classic television and radio programming uploaded to the video on-demand service.

Older shows from the likes of Louis Theroux, David Attenborough, as well as Concorde and Tomorrow’s World will be added on the iPlayer in the coming weeks.

These shows will be included in a brand-new section in the video application – dubbed From The Archive.

According to the BBC, some shows will be available permanently via iPlayer, while others will be rotated with other classic programmes.

BBC iPlayer is slowly evolving from a simple catch-up service to a more comprehensive video service, fuelled by increased competition from the likes of All 4, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

This is one of the biggest steps in making iPlayer a standalone video on-demand service.

Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekend episode about UFOs makes an appearance in the From The Archive section, as does the 2010 documentary Leaving the Cult.

Killing for Love – a six-part murder-mystery series that aired on the BBC earlier this year – also appears in the new tab.

Episodes from science and philosophy series Horizon have also been added to iPlayer, allowing viewers to rediscovery shows they might’ve missed the first time around.

The BBC has also promised to add content which “hasn’t been shown since first broadcast,” including the Great War Interviews – a series of conversations filmed with World War One veterans back in the 60s.

The launch of the From The Archive section in iPlayer coincides with the closure of the BBC Store.

This digital marketplace launched back in November 2015, and offered fans the chance to buy classics boxsets from the BBC, including Dad’s Army and Morecambe & Wise.

BBC content is still available via iTunes, Google Play and brick-and-mortar high street stores.

However, following this latest update, it might be possible to stream your favourite classic BBC show via iPlayer for free.

The BBC has been at the forefront of broadcasting and entertainment since it launched in March 1922. Just over a decade ago, the broadcaster launched iPlayer, which quickly became one of the most popular ways to download and stream TV and radio shows in the UK. Available on a variety of smartphones, tablets, laptops and TVs, the platform allows you to catch-up on the BBC’s extensive range of programming.

Of course, it’s come a long way since its launch in 2007. Not only has the BBC continued to add new shows and channels to iPlayer, the app itself has also undergone numerous redesigns and received new features over the years. More recently, it’s placed an emphasis on 4K Ultra HD content, and BBC Three has become a digital-only channel. If you’re new to the service or just want to watch the latest episode of Eastenders, here are some tips and tricks to get the most out of the BBC’s popular streaming service.

Make sure you’re signed up

While you don’t have to sign up for a BBC account to use iPlayer, you can end up missing out on many extra features and functionalities. By creating a free account, you’re able to sync your favourite shows and channels across your devices, and you’ll also get personalised recommendations. You’re asked for your postcode and personal details when you sign up, but that’s only so the broadcaster can send you relevant information, rather than tracking the things you do (at least for now.

Getting around

You shouldn’t have any issues when it comes to using the iPlayer app, either. The user interface not only looks fresh, but it’s also easy to use. To access all the different channels, categories and TV guide, you just press the ‘menu’ button located in the top left corner of the app, or you can drag it down. What’s more, you can use the search category to find a particular programme, and the My Programmes section lists shows you’ve previously watched, downloaded and bookmarked.

Language and location

Depending where you live, you also have the option to change the app’s location and region. You can do this by going into the app’s settings, which can be accessed via the top right corner. Here, you’ll find regions such as London and the West, as well as options for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Language options include Welsh, Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic.

Live TV

It’s possible to access live television through iPlayer as well. To do that, go to the ‘TV channels’ section and click on the channel icons. These are located on the left. Once you click on a programme, a video window should pop up and start within a few seconds. You’ll need a good connection, as always, and it offers the option to pause and rewind shows.

TV License changes

You’ll also want to be aware of the new License Fee changes, which came into place last year. Before, you only had to pay this fee if you wanted to access live programmes through iPlayer. However, now you need a license for all aspects of the app. Currently, the License Fee costs £147, although it can be paid monthly. This tends to change every few years to be in line with inflation.

Programme information

Most people like to know more about what they’re watching, and iPlayer makes this easy. You can get details on a programme’s plot, its duration and how many days it’s available on iPlayer under the playback screen. If you want to set up subtitles, simple press the ‘S’ icon on the programme you’re watching.

Watching shows in HD

The new iPlayer app will also play shows in HD automatically. Currently, the broadcaster’s HD resolution is at 1280×720 — not Full HD — for laptops and smartphones. When you experience Wi-Fi troubles or low bandwidth, the video will be switched to a standard resolution, so you’ll want to ensure you have a sufficient internet connection.

Using Series Record

There’s nothing more annoying than missing your favourite programme, but the BBC iPlayer Downloads desktop app will make sure this never happens again. To get this up and running, you need to click on the ‘settings’ menu, find ‘series record’ and press ‘on’. When you get it working, selected programmes will download automatically.

For the first time in over six years the licence fee is going up.

From today, anyone who pays the yearly fee to watch television will see their bill increasing from £145.50 to £147.

The rise doesn’t only affect people who watch content live or recorded on their TV but also anyone accessing the service via the BBC’s iPlayer app.

This applies whether they are using a TV set, computer, or any other equipment to view content.

The Government is responsible for setting the level of the licence fee, and last year announced that it would rise in line with inflation for five years from 1 April 2017.

Licence fee payers will receive a payment plan or a reminder reflecting the new amount when their licence is next due for renewal.

Those buying or renewing a licence after April 1st will pay the new fee.

Those already buying a licence on an instalment scheme which started before 1 April – such as monthly direct debit or weekly cash payments – will continue to make payments totalling £145.50 until their licence comes up for renewal.

The news of the rise comes as in order to watch the service.

New rules revealed will require users to sign up for a BBC ID account to watch their favourite shows on mobile devices or computers, as well as listen to radio programming and access several BBC mobile apps.

Currently, no registration or set-up is needed to watch BBC programming, whether live or on catch-up, across the iPlayer services – but viewers do need to hold a valid UK TV licence.

The move comes as part of the corporation’s move to make a “more personal” BBC.

Tony Hall, BBC director general, said: “By learning about what you want and like we can take you to more of the great programmes you love, stories you might be interested in and content you might otherwise never have discovered.

“This is a real transformation – reinventing public service broadcasting for the digital age.”

“Millions of people are already benefitting from this more personalised BBC, and by rolling it out for everyone no one will be left behind.”
