Anything can happen, so I can’t rule out the possibility that Apple could go too far on this one. However, I remain cautiously optimistic that Apple’s expanded advertising initiatives won’t ruin the App Store experience. It might even enhance it.

Apple’s App Store advertising ambitions

When you think of online advertising, Apple isn’t usually the first company that comes to mind. Most folks wouldn’t even include it in the top five. Other tech giants like Google, Meta (previously Facebook), and Amazon are generally the ones on the online advertising leaderboard.

After all, Apple is primarily viewed for its products: the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac, to name a few. Sure, it’s more recently begun expanding into services like Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade, but those are still consumer-facing subscription services. That’s quite different from advertising.

However, it may surprise you that Apple has been dabbling in advertising for over a decade. It just hasn’t been particularly successful at it. In the fledgling days of the App Store in 2010, Apple created its own ad network that it dubbed iAd.

iAd

With iAd, Apple’s goal was to provide a simple framework for developers to make money by showing ads within their apps. Apple would act as the middleman, curating and providing these ads — and taking a 40% cut of the ad revenue in exchange.

Don’t feel too bad if you’ve never heard of iAd. Despite launching to much fanfare at Apple’s 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference, iAd fast became a project that Apple likely wishes it could forget ever happened. Alas, iAd failed to gain any meaningful traction, dying a slow death over the years before Apple finally put it out of its misery in 2016.

Ads in the App Store today

Nevertheless, Apple refused to give up on advertising entirely, and out of the ashes of iAd, it came up with a new idea: search ads on the App Store.

Launched in 2016 as Apple Search Ads, the new service took a different approach. Instead of taking a cut from third-party ads that developers run in their apps, Apple would sell ad spots directly to developers to help them promote their apps on the App Store.

If you’ve ever opened the search tab in the App Store on your iPhone or iPad, you’ve likely noticed these search ads. They appear in two specific places: one at the top of the “Suggested” section when you first open the search page and the other at the top of the results shown after you search for something.

Apple marks these clearly with an “Ad” tag, so there’s no doubt about what you’re seeing, and the company has some pretty restrictive rules about what developers can show in these ad spots. Most significantly, the ads can only contain content from apps’ approved App Store product pages.

The same ads you know, but more of them

Apple’s approach is very conservative compared to most online ad networks, and there’s no reason to believe the company is about to change that stance even as it seemingly plans to expand the number of places where ads will appear on the App Store.

In July, Apple announced plans for ads to appear in two more places in the App Store: the central “Today” page and a new “You Might Also Like” section at the bottom of individual app product pages.

At the time, Apple didn’t say when these new ad spots would launch. However, an advertising webinar invite sent out to developers this week hints they could be coming soon.

I’m unsure if a timeline for Apple’s new ad placements in the App Store had previously been announced, but it appears that they’ll be live for the “holiday season” pic.twitter.com/drcgIAYlTo

— Eric Seufert (@eric_seufert) September 13, 2022

The message doesn’t provide too many specifics, but the mention of “new placements coming soon” in the headline suggests this could be the main focus of the webinar.

In a statement to multiple media outlets in July, Apple made it clear that it has no plans to change its policies for how advertising is handled on the App Store.

“Apple Search Ads provides opportunities for developers of all sizes to grow their business,” an Apple spokesperson said. “Like our other advertising offerings, these new ad placements are built upon the same foundation — they will only contain content from apps’ approved App Store product pages and will adhere to the same rigorous privacy standards.” In other words, the same ads will be shown; they’ll just be shown in more places.

Promoting apps is a win-win scenario; Apple collects money directly from developers to run ads while at the same time encouraging more spending on the App Store. Apple isn’t about to start showing third-party ads on the App Store for things like deodorant and pet supplies any more than McDonald’s would advertise Whoppers.

Why I’m not worried

If Apple follows through on its stated plans for these new ad spots, there won’t be much to worry about. The “Today” page is a place for editorial articles written by the App Store team to help folks discover new apps. A single entry, clearly tagged as an ad, would be more like a “sponsored story” than anything else.

App Store on-screen illustration

Similarly, the “You Might Also Like” section on individual App Store product pages will reportedly be at the very bottom of the page. This would put it below the list of other apps by the same developer. That’s such an easily ignored spot that I’m a bit skeptical this is where it will land, but it’s also unlikely that Apple will tromp on a developer’s App Store page by placing the ad further up.

When it comes to online advertising, it’s also easy to paint with too wide of a brush. Ads can be annoying, but when done properly, they can be helpful. Right now, Apple’s App Store search ads often highlight apps that might be worth a look, giving small indie developers a leg up. Big tech companies aren’t generally paying Apple for search ads on the App Store since they don’t need to. This means you’re likelier to see smaller apps and games you haven’t heard of before appearing in search ads rather than more mainstream apps like Netflix and Genshin Impact.

An iPhone mini, surrounded by other iPhones.
The iPhone mini had all the features of a normal iPhone, but in a smaller size.

 • Apple isn't making a "mini" version of the iPhone 14, marking an apparent end to their popular line of smaller iPhones.
 • The iPhone 13 mini is the only mini iPhone that Apple still sells, with a 5.4-inch screen.
 • They also still sell the iPhone SE, which has a smaller 4.7-inch screen but a bigger body.

The iPhone mini line has an incredibly devoted fanbase. So when this year's Apple event came and went without a new iPhone 14 mini, there were a lot of broken hearts in the audience.

But even with no new iPhone mini, Apple still sells some powerful small phones.

If you're a fan of Apple's small smartphones, here's a quick guide to what's still available.

There are two small iPhones still on the market

After the reveal of the iPhone 14, Apple stopped selling a few older iPhone models. One of these discontinued models was the iPhone 12 mini.

With that iPhone gone, there are only two small-sized iPhones still up for sale on Apple's website: the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone SE (3rd generation).

iPhone 13 mini

The iPhone 13 mini has a 5.4-inch screen size, nearly a full inch smaller than the standard iPhone 13. It's about 5.18 inches tall, 2.53 inches wide, and 0.3 inches deep. Altogether, it weighs 4.97 ounces.

Despite this, the OLED screen still offers full HD resolution, and the phone itself is just as powerful and full-featured as the standard iPhone 13.

You can buy the iPhone 13 mini from Apple's website, where it starts at $ 599.

iPhone SE

The iPhone SE (3rd generation) is even smaller with a 4.7-inch screen — however, this is largely due to the physical Touch ID button that takes up part of the phone's lower half. Because of the button, the phone's casing is bigger than the iPhone 13 mini: It's about 5.45 inches tall, 2.65 inches wide, and 0.29 inches deep. It weighs 5.09 ounces altogether.

Intended to be their ultra-budget model, Apple sells the iPhone SE starting at $ 429. It offers nearly all of the same features as the iPhone 13, but isn't as water-resistant, and has a lower resolution screen.

The iPhone SE still has a Home button.

How do these small iPhones compare to the regular models?

Here's a chart gathering all the size data we listed above, and comparing it to Apple's smallest current-gen phone, the iPhone 14.

According to Wired, glass-maker Corning is “working on ultrathin, bendable glass that’s 0.1 millimeters thick and can bend to a 5 millimeter radius” that may be usable for smartphone displays within two years. Corning produces Gorilla Glass used in Apple’s iPhones, as well as in phones made by other manufacturers like LG, Asus, OnePlus, Nokia, Samsung, and more.

Developing Gorilla Glass that can bend or fold like the materials used for the Samsung Galaxy Fold display or other foldable phone concepts could address some shortcomings endemic to these early designs.

The folding phones you see in headlines and gadget blog galleries today rely on plastic polymers that may scratch easier or have other undesirable properties. Generally, smartphone-makers that have announced foldable phones have not allowed us to test-drive these phones, which is otherwise normal practice for traditional smartphone product unveilings. That may be primarily because the software is not there yet, but it could also be that the companies anticipate negative reactions to the plastic displays, which have not been standard in flagship phones for a decade.

Apple will repair iPhones with third-party batteries https://briefnews.eu/apple-will-repair-iphones-with-third-party-batteries/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-will-repair-iphones-with-third-party-batteries/#respond Tue, 05 Mar 2019 23:17:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-will-repair-iphones-with-third-party-batteries/

In a change to its longstanding policy, Apple is apparently repairing iPhones with third-party batteries at its Genius Bars and Apple Authorized Service Providers. This is a about-face from its previous stance, which was to refuse repairs on iPhones with aftermarket batteries.

According to MacRumors, which saw a copy of Apple’s internal memo regarding the change, if a repair is unrelated to the battery, Apple will now ignore the battery and proceed as normal. If the repair is related to the battery, Apple may replace it with an official Apple battery for the standard fee. And, if the iPhone’s battery tabs are missing or the third-party battery is stuck in place, Apple’s geniuses have the option to replace the entire iPhone for the cost of a battery replacement, at their discretion of course.

In 2018, Apple reportedly replaced 11 million iPhone batteries. That was driven by the company’s year-long $ 29 battery replacement program, which was an attempt to make up for slowing older iPhones to balance performance and battery life. One might assume that plenty of iPhone customers sought out third-party batteries and now they’re turning up in greater numbers at Genius Bars. Or, maybe Apple is just becoming more flexible. After all, last month, the company announced third-party iPhone screen repairs would no longer void warranty coverage.

So far, Apple has kept quiet about the change, but 9to5Mac reports that employees and government officials in France (where the news first broke) have expressed concern that handling third-party batteries may come with increased safety risks.

Bloomberg report reveals details about iOS 13, plus iPhones and iPads through 2020 https://briefnews.eu/bloomberg-report-reveals-details-about-ios-13-plus-iphones-and-ipads-through-2020/ https://briefnews.eu/bloomberg-report-reveals-details-about-ios-13-plus-iphones-and-ipads-through-2020/#respond Thu, 31 Jan 2019 09:19:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bloomberg-report-reveals-details-about-ios-13-plus-iphones-and-ipads-through-2020/

Bloomberg reporters Mark Gurman and Debby Wu, who have a track record of accurately reporting major Apple product features before they are announced, published a new report today describing features in 2020’s iPhones and iPad Pros, as well as some new features expected in iOS 13 and new iPhones later this year. They also added to a growing number of reports that claim an updated base iPad and a long-awaited iPad mini follow-up are expected this spring.

Citing several people familiar with Apple’s plans, Bloomberg wrote that Apple plans to add a rear-facing 3D camera to the iPhone and iPad Pro. The 3D camera will scan the environment and create 3D models of it in a similar way to how the front-facing TrueDepth camera on recent iPhones scans a user’s face and tracks their expressions, but it would use a laser scanner instead of the dot-projection technology in current iPhones. This is because the dot-projection tech is not suitable to longer ranges; the new rear-facing 3D cameras would have a range of up to 15 feet.

The camera would add useful depth-sensing data to photos and make augmented reality applications more powerful and more accurate, which Apple has made a major priority internally and in its communications with app developers.

Apple today shared its fiscal first-quarter revenue with shareholders. As investors feared and as previously warned, Apple posted revenue of $ 84.3 billion for the quarter ending in December, missing revenue expectations in the quarter by around $ 4 billion.

CEO Tim Cook primarily credited macroeconomic conditions in China and their impact on iPhone sales in that region for the failure to meet expectations. That said, the company reported that every part of its business besides the iPhone was up year over year, as was overall revenue in the United States and Europe. The quarter was its second best ever in terms of revenue.

Investors were waiting for the report with bated breath after the company announced earlier this year that it expected to miss its revenue target for the quarter. Apple stock has taken a considerable tumble in recent months thanks to fears about smartphone market saturation, trade tensions between the United States and China, and other unfavorable market conditions in China.

Apple will update iPhones in China due to Qualcomm’s patent claim https://briefnews.eu/apple-will-update-iphones-in-china-due-to-qualcomms-patent-claim/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-will-update-iphones-in-china-due-to-qualcomms-patent-claim/#respond Fri, 14 Dec 2018 07:30:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-will-update-iphones-in-china-due-to-qualcomms-patent-claim/

Now that a Chinese court has granted Qualcomm an injunction against Apple that could block the sales of several older iPhone models (6S through X), Apple says it can fix things with a software update. When the ruling came down Apple said only devices running pre-iOS 12 software were in violation. All of the phones listed are capable of updating further, however Apple China told Reuters that “Early next week we will deliver a software update for iPhone users in China addressing the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case.”

We’ll see if that update is enough to keep its older phones available for sale in the country, and if it holds up on newer XR and XS models that Qualcomm is also trying to ban. One thing is for sure — the struggle over technology, licensing fees and lawsuits between the two giants isn’t over yet.

I’ve tried every single iPhone currently available — here’s my ranking of the 7 iPhones you can buy right now (AAPL) https://briefnews.eu/ive-tried-every-single-iphone-currently-available-heres-my-ranking-of-the-7-iphones-you-can-buy-right-now-aapl/ https://briefnews.eu/ive-tried-every-single-iphone-currently-available-heres-my-ranking-of-the-7-iphones-you-can-buy-right-now-aapl/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 17:35:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ive-tried-every-single-iphone-currently-available-heres-my-ranking-of-the-7-iphones-you-can-buy-right-now-aapl/ iPhone XSEdgar Su/Reuters

If you want to buy an iPhone right now, you have seven different options to choose from.

From the brand-new, futuristic iPhone XS to the old-but-good iPhone 7, the current iPhone lineup has a range of devices and price points.

At this point, I’ve tried all seven of Apple’s current iPhones. And although the iPhone XS is gorgeous and powerful, it’s not the phone I would recommend to most people.

It’s worth noting that in September, Apple discontinued a bunch of its older phones, including the iPhone SE, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone X. If you’re curious about any of those devices, you can still see how they ranked last year.

Here’s my ranking of all the iPhones you can buy today:

7. iPhone 8 Plus

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

The iPhone 8 Plus is in a weird position. It’s only a 1-year-old phone, but there’s not much incentive to buy it.

The device has some solid features — wireless charging, Apple’s year-old A11 chip, and a top-of-the-line camera — but it’s certainly not a bargain, especially compared to the iPhone XR, which you can get for only $ 50 more.

Price: Starts at $ 699

6. iPhone XS Max

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

The iPhone XS Max is an absolutely beautiful device, but it’s cursed by two things: its giant size and its giant price tag.

The phone starts at $ 1,099, but can cost as much as $ 1,449 if you max out the capacity.

And while the screen is the biggest on any iPhone, ever, that’s not always a great thing. It’s impossible to use one-handed — even with reachability enabled.

Still, the iPhone XS Max is a powerful iPhone. It sports Apple’s new A12 Bionic chip, an incredible camera, a beautiful OLED display, and a flashy new gold color.

Price: Starts at $ 1,099

5. iPhone 8

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

The iPhone 8 has a slight advantage over the iPhone 8 Plus: its size.

The iPhone 8 is a standard-sized smartphone, and that combined with its all-glass body means it feels great in your hand — though the screen is certainly smaller than the iPhone XS, XR or 8 Plus.

The one other downside of the iPhone 8 versus the iPhone 8 Plus is the lack of a dual-lens camera, but for $ 100 less, I think most people can make do without.

Otherwise, the iPhone 8 has all the same features as its big sister: fast charging, wireless charging, water resistance, a great camera, the year-old A11 bionic chip, and 64 GB of starting storage space.

Price: Starts at $ 599
