It’s time for another Dealmaster. Our latest roundup of the best tech deals from around the web includes a limited-time promotion on HBO Max subscriptions. As of this writing, new and returning customers to the video streaming service can take 30 percent off a one-year subscription when they pay for the 12 months in advance. This brings the ad-free version of the service down from $ 150 to $ 105 (or just under $ 9 a month) and the ad-supported tier down from $ 100 to $ 70 (or just under $ 6 a month). The promotion technically went live a few weeks ago, but HBO Max says the deal will be available through October 30.

To put the offer into context, new HBO Max owner Warner Bros. Discovery recently started culling content from the service as part of a major cost-cutting drive, even going so far as to cancel high-profile features like Batgirl before their scheduled release. Last month, the company also announced plans to merge HBO Max with the Discovery+ streaming service by the summer of 2023, though it hasn’t clarified what that service will cost or how the merger will affect existing subscribers. The promotion here, then, looks to be a way to stem subscriber losses and lock in more customers for the year ahead.

That said, this is still a fairly sizable discount. And even after shedding dozens of titles, HBO Max still has plenty of worthwhile binge fodder, including Ars-approved series like Hacks, His Dark Materials, and The White Lotus, newer well-reviewed titles like The Rehearsal and Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, and well-known fare like The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. If you aren’t fatigued by the glut of streaming services asking for your attention these days, or if you’ve been looking to give the service a try anyway, this is a decent deal. Just note that the offer can not be used to extend an existing membership.

Bloomberg reporters Mark Gurman and Debby Wu, who have a track record of accurately reporting major Apple product features before they are announced, published a new report today describing features in 2020’s iPhones and iPad Pros, as well as some new features expected in iOS 13 and new iPhones later this year. They also added to a growing number of reports that claim an updated base iPad and a long-awaited iPad mini follow-up are expected this spring.

Citing several people familiar with Apple’s plans, Bloomberg wrote that Apple plans to add a rear-facing 3D camera to the iPhone and iPad Pro. The 3D camera will scan the environment and create 3D models of it in a similar way to how the front-facing TrueDepth camera on recent iPhones scans a user’s face and tracks their expressions, but it would use a laser scanner instead of the dot-projection technology in current iPhones. This is because the dot-projection tech is not suitable to longer ranges; the new rear-facing 3D cameras would have a range of up to 15 feet.

The camera would add useful depth-sensing data to photos and make augmented reality applications more powerful and more accurate, which Apple has made a major priority internally and in its communications with app developers.

Apple has requested and received permission from the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) to market previously unknown iPad models, reports Consomac (via AppleInsider), a regulatory step that typically signals a release of new hardware within one to two weeks. Dated February 19, the EEC’s list mentions A1893 and A1954 models of Apple tablet computers running iOS 11, models that do not correspond with existing iPads.

Rumors of new iPad models are fairly continuous, as Apple has been known to release updated tablets anywhere from March through September. The September 2015-vintage iPad mini 4 is the company’s oldest model, but the $ 329 9.7-inch iPad released in March 2017 seems most likely to receive an update. Questionable rumors late last year suggested that Apple was considering a $ 259 version of the 9.7-inch model to maintain iPad sales in the face of declining demand.

The EEC filing provides no further detail on the A1893 and A1954 models, but it should be noted that Apple typically releases two versions of each iPad: One with cellular capabilities, the other without cellular, and each with its own model number. Consequently, there’s a decreased likelihood of those model numbers representing both an iPad and an iPad mini, or two different models of iPad Pro. As Consomac notes, the filing also contains additional tablet models preceded by CC, and iPhone models starting with AA, which do not conform with standard Apple model naming conventions.

Apple updated the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and replaced the 9.7-inch iPad Pro with a 10.5-inch model last June. The company generally does not replace devices until at least a year after initial introduction. References to an unreleased “Modern iPad” in beta versions of iOS 11.3 are thought to reference a fully redesigned iPad Pro model with Face ID, akin to the iPhone X.

If you take your fourth-generation iPad into Apple for a repair, the company may replace your tablet with a newer iPad Air 2 instead. According to an internal memo published by MacRumors, Apple started doing this on March 30, right around when the $ 329 iPad became available for purchase:

Starting March 30, iPad 4th generation whole unit repairs may be substituted to iPad Air 2 models. Apple’s repair and order management tool will indicate for each repair if a substitution will take place. Please note the substitute part’s color and capacity to ensure the customer understands what their replacement iPad whole unit will be.

While you may get a new color and capacity, we also assume that customers with Smart Covers or other accessories for their fourth-generation iPads will need to buy new accessories for the iPad Air 2; we’ve contacted Apple for clarification and will update if we get a response.

The iPad Air 2 is two years newer than an iPad 4—it’s significantly thinner, lighter, and faster, and it support iOS features like multitasking than the iPad 4 isn’t capable of. More importantly, it’s certain to be supported by the next major version of iOS, while the iPad 4 is more than likely to be dropped from the support list. Apple is likely running out of parts and replacement tablets for the older iPad, while the only-recently-discontinued iPad Air 2 is still available in abundance in Apple’s refurbished store.

Apple has signed a deal to give iPads to NHL coaches and referees, the Associated Press reports, allowing them to monitor specific game footage and check officiating decisions. The deal sees the arenas of the 16 playoff teams outfitted with iPad Pro tablets — three to each bench — as well as Macs for video challenges. From next season, the initiative will be expanded further, giving every team access to the devices.

The NHL started using video monitors on its benches this season, making it easier for coaches to know when to challenge referee calls, but it only offered iPads as part of a limited trial late in the regular season. Having the devices on the sideline already bore fruit for some teams — the AP says that Ottawa Senators winger Bobby Ryan was able to review footage of Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray before a shootout, checking his tendencies and technique, while other coaches said they have been able to adjust tactics on the fly by checking film during a game.

David Lehanski, NHL senior VP of business development, told the AP that the league would have signed the deal in time for the next hockey season, but was pleased to have it in place in time for the playoffs. “It’s equal parts of us believing this truly will help the coaches and the officials and we’re going to make decisions faster and more accurately,” Lehanski said, emphasizing the importance of speed and accuracy in tense playoff situations. He also confirmed that the rollout comes ahead of a “full league-wide deployment” next season.

The deal appears to be similar to the one signed between Microsoft and the NFL that brought Surface tablets to pro football sidelines. The appearance of the Microsoft tablets caused some confusion for both coaches, some of whom complained that they didn’t work in the midst of a game, and commentators, who regularly referred to them as “iPads” until corrected by the company.

In other sports, such as soccer, some have been cautious to introduce too much technology to avoid slowing down the game, but the NHL’s decision looks set to speed hockey up instead. Lehanski said that the NHL has regular discussions with representatives of other leagues, including the NFL and MLB, on how and where to introduce technology.
