Hyundai’s trident of Ioniq electrified vehicles—including a conventional hybrid, a full EV, and a new-for-2018 plug-in hybrid—make for a compelling assault on the house of Prius. The Ioniq Electric, currently limited to California, trades on generally agreeable road manners and 124 miles of EPA-estimated range, while the Ioniq hybrid stands toe to toe with Toyota’s gasoline-electric stalwart yet with little of the science-fiction exterior-design funk that makes the latter so distinguishable. Adding a larger battery pack and a plug socket to the Ioniq hybrid, as Toyota does with the Prius Prime, bolsters the Ioniq’s electron quotient without impacting its inoffensive design. The Hyundai Ioniq may be a young buck on the hybrid scene compared with old standbys such as the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius, but it’s already made a big splash since its introduction in 2017. The Ioniq nameplate was launched with a hybrid model before growing to include an EV and, finally, a plug-in hybrid. All three variants have impressed us with their fuel efficiency, likable driving character, and, in the case of the EV model, usable electric range. We’re not ready to genuflect just yet—the Ioniq avoids typical hybrid droning by opting for a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission instead of a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), but its hybrid powertrains could still use some refinement. What’s more, neither the plug-in nor the EV can match the best in their class for range—but a well-packaged interior and gimmick-free exterior design help to ease some of our qualms. READ MORE ››

Hyundai has priced its electrified Ioniq models competitively to do battle with green-car mainstays like the Toyota Prius and the Chevrolet Volt, and the plug-in hybrid version that’s joining the lineup for 2018 is no exception. Starting at $ 25,835, the 2018 Ioniq plug-in hybrid costs just $ 2750 more than the least expensive Ioniq conventional hybrid, and it undercuts all other plug-in hybrid vehicles on the market.

That attractive base price includes a generous load of standard equipment, including proximity key entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. A Limited trim level is also offered for $ 29,185, adding leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, and blind-spot monitoring. Add $ 3750 for the Limited Ultimate package that pulls out all the stops, including features such as a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, and a premium Infinity audio system.

Key differences between the Ioniq plug-in hybrid and the Ioniq hybrid include a larger, 8.9-kWh battery pack (versus 1.6 kWh in the hybrid) and—as the name implies—the ability to plug in and charge up said battery pack. Charging from empty on a 240-volt Level 2 charger is estimated to take just over two hours. The EPA says that the Ioniq plug-in will go 29 electric-only miles on a charge, and that it will achieve 52 mpg combined when running in hybrid mode once the batteries are depleted.  The plug-in hybrid’s electric motor also is slightly more powerful than the hybrid’s, enabling electric-only driving at up to 75 mph. The plug-in hybrid shares the same 1.6-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four engine and six-speed dual-clutch transmission as the hybrid.

Those numbers stack up well against the Ioniq plug-in hybrid’s more costly competitors. The Toyota Prius Prime provides less electric-only range, at 25 miles, even though its combined fuel economy of 54 mpg is slightly higher, while the Chevrolet Volt‘s combined fuel economy is rated at a significantly lower 42 mpg, even if its electric-only range of 53 miles beats the Ioniq by a fair margin. The Kia Niro plug-in hybrid, which shares many powertrain components with the Hyundai, offers slightly lower numbers than the Ioniq (26-mile range and a 46 mpg combined rating). Honda’s larger Clarity plug-in hybrid, which starts nearly $ 10,000 higher, offers an impressive 48 miles of range but a lower 42 mpg combined rating.

Plug-in hybrid shoppers will definitely be spoiled for choice once the Ioniq plug-in arrives at dealerships within the next few months. In typical Hyundai fashion, it appears to offer perhaps the most compelling value proposition in its competitive set.

The Hyundai Ioniq hybrid and Ioniq Electric were two of the more pleasant surprises of 2017. Besides their lofty fuel economy and useful electric range, respectively, they boasted reasonable pricing, a useful interior and shockingly buttoned down handling. They could almost be deemed fun to drive.

Yet, there was a missing member of the family for 2017. While we always knew a plug-in hybrid would be added — it was with its siblings when the Ioniq was introduced at the 2016 New York Auto Show, and we drove a prototype earlier this year — it wouldn’t be until year 2 when the production car would show its face. And although that face is shared with the Ioniq Hybrid rather than the Electric, the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid obviously has its own set of facts and figures that have now been revealed.

Chief among them is a 29-mile all-electric driving range, which, when depleted, effectively turns the Ioniq Plug-in into a regular hybrid capable of 52 mpg combined. It has a 119 MPGe estimate, for whatever that’s worth. To put all those numbers into perspective, there’s the Toyota Prius Prime (25 miles, 54 mpg combined, 133 MPGe), the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid (48 miles, 42 mpg combined, 110 MPGe), Chevrolet Volt (53 miles, 42 mpg combined, 106 MPGe), and the Ioniq’s mechanical sibling, the Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid (26 miles, 46 mpg combined, 105 MPGe).

Pricing for the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid starts at $ 25,835, including destination. The Limited trim level starts at $ 29,185. By comparison, the regular Ioniq Hybrid starts at $ 22,200 for its Blue trim and goes up to $ 27,550 for the Limited trim. However, keep in mind that the Plug-in Hybrid is subject to a $ 4,500 federal tax rebate plus whatever your particular state doles out. As such, the Plug-in Hybrid is effectively cheaper.

That’s also the case with the Toyota Prius Prime relative to the regular Prius. However, the Prime starts at just north of $ 27,995 (including destination). A regular Prius’ base price is also only about $ 1,500 lower than the Ioniq Hybrid. In other words, the Plug-in Hybrid seems like a screaming bargain … and if its siblings are any indication, it’ll be a pretty appealing car, too.

Other updates for the 2018 Ioniq lineup include paddle shifters added to the Hybrid (yay?), lane keeping assist added when lane departure warning is specified, and the availability of red paint for the Hybrid. The Ioniq Electric’s trim structure has also been simplified to base and Limited, matching the Plug-in.

Automotive tuner Bisimoto is probably best known for its wildly powerful SEMA show cars, such as its 1,029 horsepower Honda Odyssey, and last year’s 1,040-horsepower, rear-drive Hyundai Santa Fe. But this year, the company tried something different, building a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid not for power, but for fuel economy. According to Hyundai and Bisimoto, the resulting HyperEconiq managed to repeatedly exceed 80 mpg, based on 83 tests by the tuning company. That’s a seriously impressive gain considering the standard Ioniq hybrid is rated at 57 mpg city and 59 mpg highway.

Bisimoto was able to do this by enhancing just about every aspect of the car inside and out. But the most obvious changes are on the outside. The HyperEconiq features a custom body kit with front and side splitters, and a rear spoiler. There are also some prominent wheel spats, something we haven’t really seen since the first-generation Honda Insight. The car also features lightweight, one-piece carbon fiber wheels from Carbon Revolution, and they’re shod in high-silica low rolling resistance tires. Aluminum brake calipers further lighten the car, and coilover suspension lowers the car for better aerodynamics.

There are a few other mechanical changes under the skin, too. The engine features unique low-friction 0W20 oil from PurOl. It has also been tweaked so that more air can be pulled in during valve overlap, and the exhaust was upgraded to improve exhaust flow out of the engine.

The overall look is rather attractive. The body kit makes the car look sportier and more aggressive, and the carbon wheels are a nice accent to the dark gray color. We’re still undecided on the looks of the wheel spats, but if they’re functional, it’s hard to argue with them. It will also be interesting to see if hypermiling upgrades enter the aftermarket mainstream.
