Wednesday’s episode turned the clock back three years, when Outpost 3 was still an elite private school for boys — nay, warlocks. That’s where a young(er) Michael Langdon had his dark gifts nurtured by a group of men who believed he was the answer to an unsettling prophecy. (And aren’t they all?) According to legend, an “alpha” warlock with “power beyond comprehension” would someday pass the witches’ Seven Wonders trial, thereby dethroning the Supreme as the world’s most powerful supernatural entity.
The info-heavy episode also took us back to Miss Robichaux’s Academy, where the ladies of Coven were less than thrilled to be summoned by the warlocks for some nonsense story about a male Supreme. (“Men are simply not equal to women when it comes to magical ability.”) Of course, they began to doubt themselves when Michael set out to do the one thing Cordelia couldn’t: liberate poor Queenie’s restless soul from the Hotel Cortez.
That’s right, friends — we’ve been so focused on the Coven and Murder House elements of this season, we didn’t even consider that we might also get some Hotel action. Despite Cordelia’s best efforts, it appeared that Queenie would be stuck with that mustachio’d lunatic James March for the rest of time, but all it took was one quick visit from Michael to liberate her from that “hell mouth.”
Speaking of hell, Michael’s next stop was Madison’s eternal prison, a Bed Bath & Beyond-esque store with depressing lighting and no personal massagers in stock. (As Queenie noted, “You’re a stone cold bitch and you’re exactly where you belong.” And she wasn’t wrong.) But because Michael’s master plan required both of Cordelia’s fallen students, he returned to the land of the living with Madison and Queenie by his side, a sight that quite literally swept Cordelia off her feet.
Also worth discussing…
* As explained at the top of the hour, Coco, Mallory and Dinah are all witches who had their memories wiped for their “protection.” And even though Coco is allegedly the weakest of the bunch — according to Madison, at least — I’m weirdly excited to see what she’s capable of.
* Like many other viewers, I assumed (incorrectly) that Ms. Mead was modeled — at least in part — after Jessica Lange’s Murder House character Constance Langdon. But it turns out Ms. Mead was always herself, a Satan-worshipping single foster mother who made casual threats of poisoning over dinner.

Bungie only just released Destiny 2‘s “Go Fast” update, but it’s already set to talk about its next releases — and this time, the most important moves are outside the game itself. The studio is readying updates to both the Companion mobile app and its website that will make them decidedly more useful when you’re away from home. An April 4th update to Companion for Android and iOS will bring back the 3D models available in the original Destiny era. You can not only see what your Guardian looks like with equipped gear, but explore your weapons, vehicles and ghosts. It’s helpful for bragging rights with your friends, of course, but it also gives you a better reason to dig through your equipment when you aren’t playing.
Further improvements will also make life much easier if you prefer to fight in fireteams. Betas for iOS and the web (Android is in the pipeline) will let you create fireteams in your clan, and make them private if you prefer. You can send PSN and Xbox Live fireteam invitations from inside the app, and even set phone-native calendar reminders to make sure everyone is on time for that giant raid. Other mobile update also show all available vendors, what they’re selling and their potential rewards.
No, Bungie hasn’t forgotten about Destiny 2 itself. Its next large patch (1.2.0) is still due in May, and there are now hints of its plans to make exotic weapons more useful. The Sturm and Drang weapon combo, for instance, will be much more powerful. Kill enough with Drang and its Sturm counterpart’s excess rounds will deliver 80 percent damage — you’ll be very dangerous if you’re regularly swapping between the two guns. As with the “Go Fast” upgrade, the May release is aimed at winning back players convinced that D2 lost some of the original game’s thrills.

For more than six years, the Iowa Republican has been relentlessly roasting the channel on Twitter in President Donald Trump-like fashion for its lack of history-based programming. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Ronaldo scored a free-kick which went through the defensive wall to break Gremio’s brave resistance and give Real Madrid a 1-0 victory in the final.
It secured Real their second world title in a row, the third in the last four seasons, and ended Gremio’s hopes of pulling off what would have been a huge upset.
Ronaldo currently earns £18.5million a year at Real but arch rival Messi, the man he beat to this year’s Ballon d’Or, is on £26.4m.
That followed a new huge contract that Messi signed with Barcelona last month.
Spanish newspaper Marca put a huge picture of Ronaldo on their front page this morning with the headline: “Cristiano quiere mas”. That translates to “Cristiano wants more.”
They state that Ronaldo now wants the same salary Messi or Neymar which would equate to a near 50 per cent pay rise.
Marca state, however, that Real will not yet open negotiations.
Ronaldo signed a new five-year deal last year but he insisted then that would not be his last.
The Portuguese superstar, 33, was hailed by his team-mates after firing Real to Club World Cup success.
Substitute Lucas Vazquez told his club’s official website after the Abu Dhabi success: “Before the game, I told Cristiano I was sure he was going to score and that’s why he ran to me for the celebration.
“We’re thrilled. It’s a team success and I hope we can improve on it in 2018.”
The forward’s sentiments were echoed by his team-mates after Real retained their title, making sure of a fifth trophy of 2017 following success in LaLiga, the Champions League, Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
France defender Raphael Varane added: “It has not been easy. You have to congratulate the whole team. Winning five titles is very complicated.
“We know how difficult it is to win these finals, we are very happy. We know this team has talent and we will continue to fight to win more titles.”
Germany international Toni Kroos said: “This year has been a long journey, but we had a challenge and knew we could do this.”
For fellow midfielder Casemiro, the latest success was a dream come true.
The Brazilian explained: “When I arrived at Real Madrid I was hungry to win titles. That was my dream, I wanted to write my story in the best possible fashion – and I’ve won 10 already.
“I’m motivated to keep working hard and I hope there are many more to come. I’d sign up now to finish every year just like this. It’s been a wonderful year.”
“We had to really dig deep to win this Club World Cup. We put in a complete performance and we have to congratulate the players because we were up against a good team in Gremio, who I know well from Brazil.
“I never imagined I’d win so many trophies when I came to Real Madrid but I did dream about it, so that’s why it’s such an honour to be part of this team.
“We’ve had a wonderful year and the dressing room has been a happy place. We need to keep making history and enjoying this team because we’ve got a great squad.”
Acknowledging the contribution of Ronaldo, the 25-year-old added: “It’s a young but experienced group, with the best player in the world as well. We have to keep enjoying ourselves.”

Santa Jim understands the value of a top-notch beard — no straggly, wispy nonsense or anything that could easily get pulled off.
Instead, he imports his beard, which ties on in three places, from Switzerland for a whopping $ 750.
To Santa Jim, it’s worth every penny.
According to this professional, private events Santa Claus — Jim Manning when he’s out of the red suit — a lot more goes into playing Santa than simply showing up, finding the nearest couch, and letting kids sit on your lap.
Below, Manning shares more about the business of being Santa:

In 2004 I grabbed the domain name SantaBoston.com, and that’s really been what’s sent a lot of the Santa Claus traffic to me. The website presence has been important, and I’ve added social-media presence over the years. I’m now seeing direct social-media results — people see me on Instagram and they’re hiring me from that. But the website is still the No. 1 way people contact me.
And having a mobile-friendly website has been huge. My website wasn’t mobile-friendly until about three years ago. Now about 78% of people look at my website on their phones or their iPads.
The content that goes on the website is important, too. There are a lot of Santa Clauses who have websites, and fortunately I’ve had a lot of them helping me in terms of what the site needs.
People want to see … Do you look good as Santa? Do you seem trustworthy? And what are your prices? And you don’t put your prices on your website, because that’s just not something you do. But people want all that information, and they want it quickly, and they’re going to decide whether to reach out to you from that.

The busy season is December, Thanksgiving to Christmas. We start receiving calls and emails in August to book events. Some people will book from the year before. But the real majority of the requests start coming in October and November. And a lot of last-minute requests come in, too. The real season starts to ramp up after Thanksgiving.
The first week of December is more promotional work — a lot of photo shoots. I did a photo shoot for Legal Sea Foods, where they had me as Santa Claus taking photos of their clam chowder or their lobster. Drug stores, car dealerships — they’ll bring me in to set the tone for the season and whatnot.
Then toward the middle of December, that’s when I start getting into more corporate parties, private parties. And then as we get closer to Christmas Eve, the majority of my events are parties in people’s homes.
Christmas Eve is the busiest day. I’ll do 10 appearances. This year, my first visit is at 11 a.m. and my last visit is scheduled for 9 p.m.
Most weekdays are two to three visits. Weekends are much busier. Sunday I did eight different visits. I’ll have five or six days off somewhere in between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Santa Jim charges $ 499 for a visit, and does upwards of 80 visits during the season.

I’ve also got a lot of my own costs. This isn’t a part-time thing for me — this is my full-time gig. So I have an operations manager, and a lot of money goes into advertising and promotions.
I spend over a hundred dollars on gloves every year. My dry-cleaning bills are pretty expensive.
The gloves I wear are band gloves that have little grips on them. Why do they have grips on them? Because when I’m turning the pages of “The Night Before Christmas” I don’t have to fumble around. To me, details like this are super important.
The wigs and beards and mustaches? A friend of mine imports them from Switzerland. One wig, beard, mustache set costs me about $ 750, and I have five of them, which I’ve built up over the course of a few years.
My beard is tied on in three different spots. It’s really beautiful, and children under the age of 8 have a tough time distinguishing between my beard and a real beard.
The belt cost me $ 400 — that was handmade from a leather maker in Montana, which a big, gold-brass buckle.
I’ve got a cooling vest, which law-enforcement officers use to stay cool, because I’m playing Santa Claus for upwards of 10 hours. I’ve got the fat suit.
I spend over $ 300 a year on dry cleaning with all my suits. I’ve got five suits that I keep in regular rotation. So pretty much as soon as I wear a suit I’m dropping it off at the dry cleaners and I’m keeping them on a constant rotation because I want to look as fresh as possible.
Driving-wise, this year I’m driving 75 hours, probably over 3,000 miles. So there’s gas, tolls, and so forth.
Then there’s food. Normally I cook for myself and my wife, but I don’t have time for the month of December, so I end up eating out a lot, doing take-out. I tried finding a meal-delivery service. But at the end of the day, it’s a lot of grab-and-go.

If you watched Alien: Covenant earlier this year and thought, “Huh, director Ridley Scott really doesn’t seem all that interested in the aliens in this Alien movie,” well…it seems like you were right. While Covenant was a box office disappointment, the legendary filmmaker still intends to make another movie in the franchise and it certainly sounds like he’s going to double down on not caring all that much about the creature that supplies these movies with their titles.
Scott has been busy reshooting swaths of his new movie, All the Money in the World, replacing disgraced star Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer. And he’s also planning to shoot his adaptation of Don Winslow’s The Cartel next year. And he’s also taking time to talk about the next Alien movie with Entertainment Weekly. May you be so busy when you’re 80 years old.
Anyway, Scott says that the key to the series’ longevity will be replacing the drooling, acid-blooded alien with a different kind of monster – artificial intelligence. Here’s his reasoning:
We are [going to make another], we are. I think what we have to do is gradually drift away from the alien stuff. People say, ‘You need more alien, you need more face pulling, need more chest bursting,’ so I put a lot of that in Covenant and it fitted nicely. But I think if you go again you need to start finding another solution that’s more interesting. I think AI is becoming much more dangerous and therefore more interesting.
In other words, he really wants to double down on what he did in Covenant, which sidelined the xenomorph and placed the androids David and Walter (both played by Michael Fassbender) front-and-center.
While many audiences rejected Covenant for wanting to explore a devious robot and his not-so-devious counterpart rather than focus on aliens bursting out of people’s chests, this was my favorite aspect of the film. Alien: Covenant is not an interesting Alien movie, but it sure is an interesting Ridley Scott movie, one that sees the veteran filmmaker wallowing in his most nihilistic tendencies and seemingly coming to the conclusion that the human race isn’t worth the skin we live in. It’s dark, twisted, uneven, and frequently brilliant stuff. It’s also barely an Alien movie and it’s no surprise that the film was divisive amongst critics and audiences.
The big question now is whether or not Scott will actually get around to making another Alien movie…and if 20th Century Fox will let him. I don’t think age is an issue – when I visited the set of Alien: Covenant, it was clear that Scott was the most tireless and youthful guy on the production despite his advanced years (everyone had their “Ridley Scott will outlive us all” story). I think the real issue is that Scott’s plate is packed full of other projects, Alien: Covenant was a financial disappointment, and Neil Blomkamp is probably still waiting in the wings with his direct-sequel-to-Aliens idea that would override and cancel Scott’s plans to complete an entire series of prequel films.
I have no doubt in my mind that we’re going to see more Ridley Scott movies. He’s never going to stop working. I also have no doubt in my mind that we’ll get more Ridley Scott science fiction. But another Ridley Scott Alien movie? That doubles down on the more controversial elements of Covenant? I’ll believe it when I see it. And then I’ll rejoice.

Linguists know a huge amount about the historical changes that have shaped the English we speak today, but there are still plenty of questions to be answered. In some cases, new tools that linguists stole from biologists are letting us ask questions that we haven’t been able to address before.
A paper in Nature this week shows that randomness has an important influence on how language changes over time—in much the same way as random genetic mutation plays a central role in biological evolution. And by borrowing tools from biology, the researchers point to some examples of historical change in English that are best explained by random processes.
The parallels between biological evolution and cultural evolution are not always exact, but there are some pretty robust similarities. Like genetic mutations, new forms appear in language. As with genes, some of those new forms become more prevalent over time. If a mutated gene is beneficial, natural selection ensures that it becomes more popular; if a new linguistic form is preferred for some reason, cultural selection makes it more popular.

“If Willie is planning to have any more kids, he had better get a move on!” Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson wrote in his new autobiography titled “Finding My Virginity.”
The “Willie” in question is International Airlines Group CEO Willie Walsh. Branson is concerned about his ability to reproduce because of a bet the two made years ago.
Shortly after Delta acquired 49% of Virgin Atlantic Airways in 2012, Walsh predicted that the Virgin Atlantic would not exist in five years’ time.
“I can’t see Delta wanting to operate the Virgin Brand, because if they do, what does that say about the Delta brand?” Walsh said at the time.
Walsh’s IAG owns rival British Airways and Iberia among other airlines.
“Willie’s claim was absolute rubbish — I had no intention of letting Virgin Atlantic Disappear, and neither did Delta,” Branson wrote in his book. “While I usually laugh off criticism, when I see our competitors overstepping the line, I will protect my teams in every way I can.”
In response, Branson challenged Walsh to a bet: “If Virgin Atlantic was still flying in five years time, [British Airways] had to give £1 million ($ 1.31 million) to our staff.”
If Virgin Atlantic was no longer flying, Branson promised to personally pay BA employees £1 million of his own money.
REUTERS/Clodagh KilcoyneHowever, Walsh wasn’t quite impressed by the offer.
“Branson is a billionaire banker, allegedly. I’m not a billionaire. So maybe a bet that would have as much pain to me as it would to him – a knee in the groin,” the IAG CEO said in response at a press conference.
Branson gladly accepted.
“It seems a very painful and foolish thing for Willie Walsh to propose,” he wrote on his blog at the time. “But I would be happy to accept.”
Which brings us back to today. That five years period ends in December.
It seems Branson is keen on collecting on the bet.
In fact, this is the second time in recent months Branson has publicly reminded Walsh of the wager.
“Willie Walsh predicted that the Virgin Atlantic brand would disappear within five years as a result,” Branson wrote on his blog in July. “Whether childishly or bravely, he also said he’d accept a knee in the groin from me if it didn’t. Well, Willie, that five-year point is up this December. And Virgin Atlantic is still flying strong!”

President Donald Trump has begun phoning members of his legal team most mornings around 6:30 a.m. to vent and strategize about the Russia investigation, The Washington Post reported on Friday, citing three senior White House officials.
Officials said the discussions usually involve an overview of recent headlines and a plan to combat the “fake news” media, as well as brainstorming ways to handle Justice Department officials and the special counsel leading the probe into whether Trump campaign officials colluded with Russians to influence the 2016 election.
The calls typically devolve from strategy consultations into rants, however, and do little to lighten Trump’s mood before he arrives at the Oval Office to begin the day’s work, the officials said.
Trump’s advisers initially encouraged the daily phone calls as a way to help Trump compartmentalize, but the Post reported that one White House official could only laugh when asked whether the calls have been effective.
Indeed, Trump frequently sends out streams of angry tweets early in the mornings, including several on Thursday lambasting the Democratic National Committee’s handling of hacks during the 2016 election.
https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/877889199353077760
…Why did Democratic National Committee turn down the DHS offer to protect against hacks (long prior to election). It’s all a big Dem HOAX!
But Trump advisers such as Kellyanne Conway say Trump has been tending to “business as usual,” despite media reports suggesting otherwise.
“As his detractors suffer from this never-ending ‘Russia concussion,'” Conway told the Post. “Conjecture about the mood and momentum of the West Wing is inaccurate and overwrought. The pace is breakneck, the trajectory upward.”
