PROSTATE cancer symptoms are often hard to identify in the early stages, and some men may show no signs at all. UK doctors are recommending men over the age of 50 take the PSA test to check if they have the disease. But what does it entail? Is there a rectal exam?![]()
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men in the UK, and because the disease develops slowly, there may be no signs you have it for many years.
It was revealed at the beginning of this week that Bill Turnbull is currently struggling with the disease, and the BBC Breakfast presenter, along with doctors, is now urging men to get tested.
The PSA test is the recommended method for checking if you have the disease. But what does it entail – is it a blood test, a urine sample or a rectal examination?
Professor Hashim Ahmed, Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital, is asking men not so shy away from having a prostate check, and details what to expect from the test.
Men over the age of 50 who have talked through the advantages and disadvantages of having a PSA test with their GP or practice nurse are eligible for a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test.
The first stage of the process is a simple blood test.
A rectal exam can then help identify obvious abnormalities on the surface of the prostate even if the PSA is normal.
Dr Ahmed explains: “If you have a raised PSA, or the rectal exam shows a lump, your doctor may refer you for a MRI scan in a specialised unit, which is a much more effective way of detecting prostate cancer.”
He added that it’s important to note that your PSA can be high if you have prostate cancer but it can also be higher than normal if there is an infection, inflammation or you have a large prostate.
Recent sexual activity before the test or cycling due to the pressure from a saddle can also raise your PSA levels, so make sure your GP is aware of anything that could affect the test.
But if you need a biopsy, does it have to be through the back passage and does it hurt?
Dr Ahmed said: “A biopsy check for prostate cancer involves taking tissue samples from the prostate. Some expert centres now only biopsy the prostate if the MRI shows suspicious areas.
“One of the common ways to biopsy the prostate is through the back passage, called transrectal ultrasound biopsy or TRUS biopsy. This procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes and your doctors can discuss the biopsy and the side effects.
“Some urologists now biopsy the prostate using the transperineal approach (through the skin behind your scrotum). This is a cleaner approach that is more accurate but it requires sedation or general anaesthetic to carry out.”
Prostate cancer does not normally cause symptoms until the cancer has grown large enough to put pressure on the urethra.
When this happens symptoms can include:
Weight loss can be hard, and following a diet plan is hardly most people’s idea of fun.
However, there is one diet trick that scientists have found could help dieters lose a large amount of weight without trying.
Simply changing the way your kitchen is organised could lead to a lot of weight loss, according to science.
A study from Cornell University in New York found that subjects lost between 1.5 stone and 2.2 stone by moving where they stored their food.
The study “Slim by Design: Kitchen Counter Correlates of Obesity” found that those with food left in visible spaces were heavier.
They found: “The presence of fruit on the counter was associated with lower BMI in both studies, but the presence of foods such as candy, cereal, soft drinks, and dried fruit were associated with weight differences that ranged from 9.4 to 14.4 kg.
“Interpretations Although correlational, the findings from these two studies suggest that when counselling patients regarding their weight, physicians also suggest they clear their kitchen counter of all food except a fruit bowl.”
So, keeping fruit on the counter could lead you on a path to being much slimmer.
However, all other food should be tucked away in the cupboard to help dieters resists temptation.
Another tip to keep weight low comes in the form of particular hot drinks.
Drinking certain weight loss tea could could help you shed the pounds.
While medical experts advise staying clear of branded slimming teas that can often work as a laxative for a whole host of health issues, other natural teas have been found to have some health benefits.
These include green tea, black tea, Oolong tea and puerh tea.

The plot of Avengers 4 has remained tightly under wraps – we don’t even know the title! But as the comic book movie sequel continues production, secret plot details have inevitably begun to surface.
Since Avengers 4 started production in August 2017, there have been some exciting snapshots of new costumes, gnarly hair cuts, and lots of grim-faced Marvel superheroes. But the most intriguing picture of all — a set photo of Chris Evans in a familiar costume — could have wide-ranging implications for the plot of the fourth Avengers movie, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that follow it.
Warning: Possible spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 follow.
What does the future of the MCU look like? A little retro, to be honest. On Wednesday TMZ released a photo of Chris Evans on the set of Avengers 4, clean-shaven and wearing his old Avengers-era Captain America suit. It’s a patriotic outfit that Steve Rogers had shed long ago, since he started working for S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He later repurposed his old World War II fighting outfit, but he never went back to that “old-fashioned” stars and stripes get-up from the first Avengers.
So why is he wearing it in Avengers 4? Well, the most obvious answer would be: time travel.
Yes, that does seem like a huge leap of an answer to a makeover, but like a certain 2017 movie wisely said, Marvel has been giving us all the clues. Nerdist first picked up on it after combing through the costume changes and mysterious Robert Downey Jr. Instagram pictures back in December. First, there was an online photo from Downey Jr. featuring a hole in his shirt for the arc reactor that Tony Stark used to have. Jeremy Renner was seen sporting a costume that looked eerily similar to Hawkeye’s Ronin persona that he may have adopted in a future or altered timeline. Casting calls have been made for scenes possibly set in the ’60s and ’40s. Captain Marvel, whose solo film is set in the ’90s and deals heavily with the quantum realm, will make an appearance in Avengers 4. And Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is also centered around the quantum realm, is reported to have a major impact on the events of Avengers 4.
It all adds up to more than just a few flashbacks. This could mean a whole Back to the Future-style plot where the team jumps through time and space, attempting to change history itself.
Okay, this is the part where the theorizing starts. Put on your tinfoil hats.
Avengers 4 will very likely follow Thanos beating the Avengers and finishing the completion of the Infinity Gauntlet, scattering the team into alternate timelines or dimensions in the process. The story could follow them going to key moments in history — the battle of New York in the first Avengers film, the ’90s when Captain Marvel first gains her powers — and attempting to change its course. Or they could be attempting to foil Thanos’ early grasps for the Infinity Stones. This could be a result of the Time Stone that we were first introduced to in Doctor Strange, which Stephen Strange used against Dormammu, or the Avengers could be making use of the quantum realm — a dimension that transcends time and space.
If Avengers 4 does indeed have a time travel plot, this opens up infinite (pun intended) possibilities for the MCU. This could be the universe-shattering event that Kevin Feige and the Anthony and Joe Russo have been hinting at, a whole new chapter for the MCU that involves not just the cosmos, but alternate worlds and alternate dimensions.

Russell Simmons, the hip-hop mogul who cofounded Def Jam Recordings, has been accused of sexual misconduct along with film producer and director Brett Ratner, his former protégé.
Model Keri Claussen Khalighi told the The Los Angeles Times in a report published Sunday that in 1991, when she was 17, Simmons and Ratner invited her to Simmon’s apartment to watch a music video they had been working on. She said that Simmons tore off her clothes and attempted to force her to have sex.
“I looked over at Brett and said ‘help me’ and I’ll never forget the look on his face,” she told the Times. “In that moment, the realization fell on me that they were in it together.”
She said of Simmons’ advances that she “fought it wildly” before she eventually “acquiesced” to performing oral sex.
Khalighi said she then went to take a shower, feeling “disgusting.” She said that Simmons then walked up behind her in the shower and, according to the Times, “briefly penetrated her without her consent.” She said that Simmons left the shower after she jerked away from him.
Simmons denied the allegations to the Times and disputed Khalighi’s account.
“Everything that occurred between Keri and me occurred with her full consent and participation,” he said.
Simmons later wrote the following statement on his website in response to the Times’ story:
“I completely and unequivocally deny the horrendous allegations of nonconsensual sex against me with every fiber of my being. … More than anything, I want my daughters to live in a more equal world and a world where they will not become victims of sexual harassment.”
Through his attorney, Ratner told the Times that he had “no recollection” of Khalighi asking for help and denied witnessing her “protest.” Ratner has been accused of sexual harassment or assault by numerous actors, including Olivia Munn and Ellen Page.
Another woman, Tanya Reid, told the Times that she had an encounter with the men in 1994, when she was 18. She said that Simmons and Ratner were staying at a hotel where she worked at the front desk, and that Simmons called her and and asked her to have oral sex with Ratner.
She said that in a later encounter in Ratner’s hotel room, Ratner forced her to give him oral sex. She said the experience ruined her image of the modeling industry and led her to give up her dreams of a career as a model.
Simmons and Ratner both told the Times that they did not recall the alleged incident.
Simmons and Ratner did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

Weight loss can be helped by clocking lots of hours in bed, not just on the treadmill, scientists have claimed.
New research found that those who go to bed later and sleep less are more likely to be overweight.
What’s more, the study showed that obesity was much more likely in those who go to bed later, even if they are getting ‘enough’ sleep.
Researchers at the University of Birmingham look at the lifestyles of Chinese children to draw the conclusions.
The study found that there is a link between sleep duration and the amount of body fat.
The children who slept longer had a lower BMI then those who slept longer.
For each hour later that the child went to bed their BMI was a little higher.
Professor Peymané Adab, Professor of Chronic Disease Epidemiology & Public Health, said: “This study contributes to existing evidence for sleep duration as a risk factor for obesity in childhood, and later bedtime as an additional risk factor — regardless of sleep duration.”
Another study has shown the link between sleep and weight loss, and backed up evidence that less sleep could be tied to obesity.
The study found that those who reported getting less than six hours sleep were less likely to successfully lose weight than the or slept between six and eight hours.
The findings were made by the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, US.
A nutritionist at the Swedish health app Lifesum has revealed that chewing food can have a very positive effect on your waistline.
She made the comments after it was revealed Samantha Cameron chews her food fifty times before swallowing as a way to stay slim.
For many, this may seem a little extreme – but Frida confirmed to Express.co.uk those trying to lose weight should consider it.
She said: “While everything should be done in moderation and it is important to avoid over chewing your food, there are reasons why you should ensure you break down your food as much as possible before swallowing it.”

]]>In coordination with Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) released a study on Monday underscoring that phone distractions are a major source of dangerous driving and car wrecks in the US. The company creates mobile apps that measure driving behavior.
One in four drivers who crashed were using a phone during or mere moments before the accident, CMT said.
Meanwhile, distracted driving occurred at some point during 52 percent of car trips that resulted in a crash, CMT’s study found.
“This is a big problem for drivers and bikes and pedestrians,” said Hari Balakrishnan, chief technology officer of CMT, according to the Chicago Tribune. “It’s a fairly dominant factor in determining whether you have a crash.”
The alarming statistics revealed in the study come as the number of traffic fatalities have jumped by 14 percent since 2015, the largest two-year increase in the US in five decades, according to the National Safety Council.
The CMT study involved data of more than 100,000 drivers over 18 months. During driving trips that resulted in a crash, the average length of distraction was 135 seconds. Phone distraction occurred for two minutes or more during 20 percent of distracted drives, CMT said.
The top 10 percent of distracted drivers are 2.3 times more likely to be in a crash than the average driver, and 5.8 times more likely than the least distracted of drivers, CMT found.
Furthermore, CMT said laws that seek to curb phone use among drivers are “only marginally effective,” and “that states with anti-cellphone laws have only slightly safer drivers than those that don’t.”
The study found the average duration of phone distraction per 100 miles of driving is 3.17 minutes for drivers in states with laws against all handheld devices; 3.25 minutes for states with laws against handheld devices for drivers under the age of 18; and 3.82 minutes for states with no laws that address handheld devices among drivers.
While phones seem to be a major part of increased danger on the road, Balakrishnan said “smartphones hold the solution to the problem they created. Drivers now have access to tools that analyze their driving and achieve real behavioral change through immediate and ongoing feedback.” The company said its telematics apps can help reduce distracted driving.
Last week, phone use by drivers was blamed in part for the rising death toll of pedestrians killed by motorists in the US. Pedestrian deaths reached nearly 6,000 in 2016, the largest number in more than two decades, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.
Though phone distractions are not the definitive reason for the spike in pedestrian deaths, the author of the GHSA report said it is the likely culprit.
“It’s the only factor that that seems to indicate a dramatic change in how people behave,” said Richard Retting, safety director for Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants.
