Amazon Prime’s Invincible isn’t like other animated superhero shows. Sure, there’s an underdog hero — this one is named Mark aka Invincible (voiced by The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun) — but he’s unique. Half Korean American and half superhero, Mark is a teenager who inherits his powers from his dad Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), the most dominant caped crusader or Viltrumite in their world. But the more strength and ability Mark gains, the more he begins to see that his father is more flawed than he could have ever imagined. Zazie Beetz, who is best known for her roles in FX’s Atlanta and the Joker film, voices Amber, Mark’s high school classmate. Mark quietly crushes on Amber until grabbing her attention by attempting to defend her against a handsy bully. Amber eventually develops feelings for Mark, and unintentionally lands herself in a love triangle with him and Eve aka Atom Eve (Weird City‘s Gillian Jacobs). “I had an opportunity to read the pilot and then to also look into the comic and the group of people that were already attached,” Beetz tells TVLine. “Steven Yeun and J.K., Sandra Oh (who plays Mark’s mom Debbie) and Gilly…. It was just a really great team that I wanted to work with and be a part of. Also, I loved that Robert Kirkman was involved with the series and I really trusted that the spirit of the comic was going to be in the television show, which I think is really important. I like being part of that world.” Read on as the German-born Beetz teases the eight-episode Season 1 and talks about the show’s indirect connection to Atlanta costar and creator Donald Glover. TVLINE | Did working with Kirkman attract you to Invincible? TVLINE | What was it like working on this during a pandemic? Were you all doing this from home, virtually? TVLINE | Have you started working on Atlanta Season 3 yet? RELATED STORIES
Beetz says she was drawn to Invincible, which The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman adapted from his comic book series of the same name, and made its Amazon premiere this past Friday, because of the show’s impressive and inclusive cast.
He was super involved. He was in all of the recording sessions and was very involved in shaping the show. I was really drawn to that, and Amber’s character is a part of that larger world.
TVLINE | Amber has got some fighting skills. She’s not Domino and she doesn’t have superpowers, but she doesn’t suffer bullies.
Yeah, she holds her own and I think that is something that sort of shifted from her comic book persona, as well. She leads with confidence and leads with a sense of knowing who she is and who she wants to be and what she wants to do in the world. I think that’s actually a really interesting juxtaposition in a way to Mark, who is trying to figure it all out still. I liked the idea that a lot of people who watch a superhero thing are like, “Oh man, I wish I was like Superman or Wonder Woman” or whoever. But really, you don’t have to be that to be exceptional, or to be inciting change in the world and doing what you think is good. So, her role in that way is really important.
We did this before the pandemic, during, like, the spring of 2019, so it was a normal recording where you went into the studio — but we didn’t record at the same time. I think Steven got to work with J.K. Simmons, but I did it alone, and I think Gillian was alone for all of hers. Obviously, Kirkman was involved when we were recording, and our director, and some of the producers. But I didn’t work with the other actors directly.
TVLINE | Oh, I imagined you and Gillian swapping Donald Glover stories because you have both worked with him. Is it like “Six Degrees of Donald Glover?”
Yeah, I was thinking about that. I was like, “Oh yeah, like she knows him because of her time on Community.” We were just doing a bunch of our interviews together, which is really how we are getting to know each other.
We’re actually just about to start shooting. So, we’re doing it. I’m leaving in like two weeks to go shoot in Europe, so we have to start the whole process of that with the PPE and everything. And you can never really get used it. I have worked during the pandemic, and I have to say I’m really grateful to be working, frankly. In this business, it’s interesting because it’s all about connecting with and communicating with people, and that whole element is harder to do. Sets are very strict about keeping everybody safe, which is good, but it doesn’t make the ability to really communicate effectively easy. You have to kind of get used to doing everything a bit differently, yet you never really get used to it, because it’s a little anxiety inducing.
TVLINE | What can we expect from Amber in Season 1 of Invincible?
Mark and Amber kind of have a romantic thing. But as Mark is coming into his own and sort of working on their relationship, he struggles with the pressure of trying to balance these responsibilities of being a super person, and just trying to live a normal life. So, yeah, I don’t know what I can really tell you beyond that. But get ready for more tension between him and Amber and Eve.

In a surprise move, slot-holder Greg Ingham of GPI Racing is also a part-owner of superstar sprinter Chautauqua, but he has decided to secure Invincible Star as his Everest runner.
This comes on the eve of Chautauqua’s make-or-break barrier trial between races at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
CHAUTAUQUA: Jockey Berry backs horse to jump
Chautauqua has refused to leave the barriers in his last six barrier trials or jump-outs with Racing NSW stewards indicating this week they will refuse nominations for the champion sprinter in trials or races unless he jumps cleanly in Saturday’s barrier trial.
This may have influenced the decision of those behind the GPI Racing to lock in the brilliant Invincible Star as their Everest runner.
With confirmation that the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Invincible Star is into The Everest, this leaves only two starting positions remaining in the big race.
Leading owners Max Whitby and Neil Werrett, and the Australian Turf Club have yet to determine their Everest runners.
Invincible Star has only had five starts, winning twice at Group 3 level, but she showed her quality with a close second to Merchant Navy in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington last spring.
She hasn’t raced since but the formline has been franked with Merchant Navy training onto win at Group 1 level at Royal Ascot in June.
Invincible Star, who is set to resume in the Concorde Stakes at Randwick on September 1 against inaugural Everest winner Redzel, gives Waterhouse and Bott two starters in the world’s richest turf race with English already a confirmed Everest starter.
Amazon Studios has greenlit an animated series based on the comic Invincible, which was created by artist Cory Walker and writer Robert Kirkman, who made The Walking Dead. The new show’s source material tells the story of Mark Grayson, an ordinary teen whose father is the planet’s Superman-like guardian. When Mark manifests powers himself, he discovers what it means to be a superhero — with a twist that switches up the classic alien-becomes-Earth’s-protector story.
The comic series, which ended with issue 144 back in February, was Kirkman’s first landmark series when it launched in 2002 (a year later, he followed it up with The Walking Dead). Film rights were sold in 2005 and a version was in the works with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as recently as this year, but an animated series might make more sense, especially with the comic’s bright, clean (and occasionally graphic) style. Invincible will be eight hour-long episodes and will globally premiere on Amazon Prime Video at an undisclosed date.
Invincible will be Kirkman’s third comic adapted to the small screen, after the long-running The Walking Dead and Cinemax’s Outcast, which debuted in 2016. While the new series shows that streaming platforms are taking superhero shows seriously, Netflix has invested harder than its competitors, buying successful creator Mark Millar’s company (and its properties) last fall and Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld’s material in March.

During Vladimir Putin’s annual speech on Thursday, the Russian president played videos that unveiled brand-new nuclear weapons with startling capabilities.
Putin announced an “unstoppable” nuclear-powered “global cruise missile” that has “practically unlimited” range, then showed an animation of the device bobbing and weaving around the globe. He also played a computer animation of a high-speed, nuke-armed submarine drone blowing up ships and coastal targets.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Iran’s foreign minister ridiculed a security conference speech by Netanyahu, who used a part of a drone to make a point. He lashed out at Israel’s “aggression to neighbors” and mentioned the country’s “crumbling invincibility.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif spoke at the Munich Security Conference a few hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu displayed what he said was a piece of an Iranian drone shot down last week by Israeli forces. The Iranian official dismissed the use of the prop as a “cartoonish circus” that was meant “to blame others for its own strategic blunders, or maybe to evade the domestic crisis they’re facing.”
He added that Israel was avoiding discussion of its own hostile and destructive policies in the Middle East.
“Israel uses aggression as a policy against its neighbors,” Zarif said, citing the regular air incursions into Syria and Lebanon. “The entire speech [by Netanyahu] was trying to evade the issue.”
Zarif also said that the loss of a fighter jet by Israel during the latest flare-up on the Syrian border tarnished the image of invincibility the Israeli military has.
Earlier on Sunday, Netanyahu called Iran the biggest threat in the world, and taunted Zarif while holding the aircraft fragment.

If you are a team leader, it is possible you may have come across one or more of the following problems:
Any one of these can prove extremely problematic, more than one of these can be potentially disastrous.
All is not lost however, these issues, and more, often stem from the same issue, and with that issue identified, it can be resolved.
The issue is this, the team suffers from a lack of Psychological safety.
Psychological safety is the (often shared) belief that the team is an environment where it is safe to take risks. To share ideas and speak openly without fear of criticism or ridicule.
Years ago, Google began Project Aristotle,[1] a project to determine how to engineer the most effective team possible. Google spent years studying 180 different teams in detail. Their research was so detailed that they even kept track of how often the team members ate together. In this project Google learned a great deal about how effective teams function. One thing that they noticed, is that key to almost all successful teams, is that they were environments of psychological safety.
As each team member felt free to contribute and speak up, they became hotbeds of ideas, team members were much less likely to leave, and ultimately, were more successful. All because of psychological safety.
The key benefit of psychological safety is that it fosters and encourages collaboration and interaction in the team.
It can often be difficult to tell at first if an idea you have is any good. Someone may have a fantastic idea but might not speak up about it out of fear that they will be embarrassed. If your team is in an environment that people feel comfortable to speak freely in, they will naturally begin to produce ideas. Some ideas will be better than others of course (but even bad ones may be improved in an effective team). Ten bad or mediocre ideas are better than no ideas at all.
In psychologically safe teams, people won’t fear making mistakes so much, and with this, even if they make mistakes, they’ll be more likely to learn from them, increasing their future effectiveness.
Consider brainstorming, (or even improv comedy!), the reason why it’s so popular, is because they foster psychologically safe environments. Think about it, in an effective brainstorming session, every member of the team is contributing, soon you might have dozens of ideas and plans made where before you only had a handful. Sure not all of these ideas may be workable, but their sheer existence demonstrates that each member of the team feels they can contribute, they feel included.
However, if before one person came up with a bad idea that was shot down and overly criticized, they may be less likely to speak up in the future, even if they have a potentially groundbreaking idea. As such, it’s difficult to go wrong with a psychologically safe team.
All that is needed is for people to feel that they can speak up, even voice criticisms if they have them. People will engage in a team more if they feel a part of it, and that they are shaping it, and who knows, maybe in their critique is an idea that will massively increase the effectiveness, and with it, the success of your team.
It all starts with you.
Psychological safety is not something that can appear organically by itself out of nowhere. If the team environment is not psychologically safe, then the team leader must work hard to make it a safe environment. Here are some tips to get you on your way:
With these tips you should be well on your way to making your team a more effective, dynamic, and more successful than it has ever been.

]]>Beyond its storied animated films and amusement parks, Disney’s empire includes the Marvel franchise, Star Wars, Pixar, ESPN, the Disney Channel, and ABC. The rumored deal would include 21st Century Fox’s cable networks (like FX), its film and TV studio (which owns the rights to the X-Men franchise), and Sky, an enormous British pay-TV company. To borrow a metaphor from the Marvel universe, this deal would change Disney from Captain America to the Hulk, transforming a historic American icon into a behemoth with problematic competitor-smashing tendencies.
Disney is planning to launch several streaming services in the next two years, as it pulls its content from Netflix to build a direct competitor. Such a Disneyflix product with the library described above would be exhaustive, satisfying both young families and movie buffs.
It might also be illegal. In the last few years, politicians have started pointing to the dangers of monopolies in the economy. Historically, the biggest concern for antitrust regulators has been that large companies have the power to push up prices and hurt consumers. But in the last few years, economists have emphasized other downsides of modern monopolies for the economy at large. Several of the country’s most obvious economic challenges—including stagnating wages, low labor-force participation, less business creation, and lower interstate-migration rates—may all be the outcome of rising “market power,” according to a 2017 paper by two economists, Jan De Loecker, of Princeton University, and Jan Eeckhout, of University College London.
The first cause on the list for the rise of monopolies in the last few decades? The rise of merger-and-acquisition activity since 1980. It is a heyday of sorts for media mergers, including Comcast’s acquisition of NBC-Universal, Verizon’s union with AOL and the Huffington Post, and Time Warner’s ongoing romance with AT&T, which already absorbed DirecTV. However, it is hard to say with certainty that these deals have contributed to rising television prices, particularly since the pay-TV industry has long included both local cable monopolies and enormous monthly bills. In the last few decades, regulators have been consistently willing to approve such mergers that didn’t immediately appear to threaten consumers, even if they did raise other economic concerns.
Would a “21st Century Disney” meet the technical definition of a monopoly? The Justice Department might take a long look. To note one example of the market power of such a merger, Disney’s Buena Vista studio and 20th Century Fox together accounted for more than 40 percent of U.S. film-studio revenue in 2016. It would not be absurd to imagine that, in a good year for 21st Century Disney, it would account for half of the domestic movie business, creating a dominant advantage in Hollywood. But, as Disney’s own films show again and again, there is a virtue in humility. Those who seek dominance for its own sake rarely win in the end.

After successfully adapting Preacher for AMC, a comic book property many others struggled with, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen are now taking on another well-known comic, Robert Kirkman‘s (The Walking Dead) Invincible. The duo will produce, direct, and write the comic book movie for Universal.
Below, learn more about the potential Invincible movie.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned Goldberg and Rogen are making Invincible through their Point Grey banner. The 14-year-old comic is now on its 133rd issue. It’ll soon finally end its long run with issue #144. The story follows teenage superhero Mark Grayson, known to the world as Invincible. The teenager lives a pretty normal day-to-day life, going to school and work – but his dad happens to the most powerful superhero alive. When Mark turns 17, he starts to gain his own superpowers.
Kirkman co-created the comic with artists Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker. The Walking Dead creator issued this statement:
For nearly a decade I’ve had to endure the ‘what about Invincible?’ question as fans have watched The Walking Dead grow into the multi-media monstrosity it has become over the years. The answer was always that we were waiting for the right team to partner with. That team has arrived! The esteemed misters Goldberg and Rogen have proven themselves to be top-notch directors with a keen collective eye for stunning visuals after slumming it by writing hit after juggernaut hit.
Invincible’s surprising, edgy, shocking, and oftentimes blood-soaked story couldn’t be in more capable hands. With the team of Rogen, Goldberg and Universal, I’m very confident this will be another superhero movie, in a long line of superhero movies that continues to prove that it’s a viable, thrilling genre that will keep people coming to the cinema for years to come
Rogen and Goldberg added:
No matter how much damage it causes our bodies, minds, and our most intimate relationships with those we love, we will not rest until Invincible is as great a movie as it deserves to be.
The last comic book adaptation the duo worked on, The Green Hornet, wasn’t a great experience. It left them wanting to stay under a certain budget number moving forward, but now as established filmmakers, having made This is the End, The Interview, and the wonderful Preacher pilot, maybe the two of them can make a big superhero movie with fewer restraints. The duo’s next effort behind the camera, Future Man, is expected to hit Hulu sometime this year.
