Uber Technologies said Thursday it's responding to a cybersecurity incident. 

Uber employees received a message from an unknown person on the company Slack that read, "I am a hacker," both Bloomberg and The New York Times reported. The apparent hacker also listed multiple internal databases that they claimed to have accessed, The Times reported.

Uber told Insider it was responding to a "cybersecurity incident" and was in touch with law enforcement.

Uber has taken Slack offline, according to both Bloomberg and The Times.

The hacker's identity remains unknown, but a person claiming to be behind the hack has spoken to The Times as well as some cybersecurity experts.

Sam Curry, a security engineer at Yuga Labs, tweeted that the attacker "is claiming to have completely compromised Uber" and had shared screenshots showing that the person had full admin access on Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform.

"This is a total compromise, from what it looks like," Curry told The Times.

The supposed hacker told The Times that he was just 18 and had gotten access to Uber's systems by texting an Uber worker pretending to be a corporate information technology person. He sent The Times images that showed access to lists of Uber emails, cloud storage information, and code.

Uber was also the victim of a huge cyberattack in 2016 that exposed the personal data of 57 million people, including both riders and drivers. The company paid hackers $ 100,000 to erase the data from their servers. Details of the data breach weren't made public until a year after it happened.

In a tweet confirming the breach, the company said that it's currently responding to a cybersecurity incident and that it's now in touch with law enforcement. 

The company didn't say what exactly the hacker was able to access and if user data was compromised. The Times says the hacker's Slack message also listed databases they claim they were able to infiltrate, though. And based on screenshots seen by The Washington Post, the bad actor boasted about being able to gather internal code and messaging data. An Uber spokesperson explained that the bad actor was able to post on the company Slack after compromising a worker's account. They then gained access to Uber's other internal systems and posted an explicit photo on an internal page.

Bug bounty hunter and security researcher Sam Curry tweeted information reportedly from an Uber employee that could be about that explicit photo:

Uber admitting the incident and getting in touch with authorities shortly after it happened is a massive departure from how it handled the data breach it suffered back in 2016. The company hid that attack for a year and instead of reporting the incident, it paid the hackers $ 100,000 to delete the information they stole. Former Uber security chief Joseph Sullivan was fired and eventually charged with obstruction of justice for the role he played in the coverup, though his lawyers argued that he was used as a scapegoat. Uber settled with the Justice Department for failing to disclose the breach in July this year.

At the very least, the FTC could easily delay Amazon from finalizing the deals by up to a year. For Amazon, a worst-case scenario would involve lawsuits from the Commission. At the start of the year, NVIDIA abandoned its proposed $ 40 billion acquisition of ARM after the FTC sued to block the purchase over concerns it would stifle competition across a variety of markets. Whatever comes next, Amazon won’t have an easy road ahead. FTC Chair Lina Khan is a well-known company critic. She rose to prominence in legal circles on the back of an article titled “Amazon's Antitrust Paradox.”

Authorities in Michigan are investigating how a device used by voters ended up for sale on eBay.

An election machine security expert in Connecticut spotted the voter assist terminal on the online marketplace and purchased it for $ 1,200 before alerting Michigan authorities, CNN reported.

"We are actively working with law enforcement to investigate allegations of an illegal attempt to sell a voter assist terminal acquired in Michigan," said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in a statement on Thursday.

Benson clarified that voter assist terminals are "not used to tabulate ballots, but are typically used by voters with disabilities who need assistance marking their ballot privately at polling places."

In an interview with CNN, Ohio resident Ean Hutchison claims he purchased the device online at Goodwill for $ 7.99 before auctioning it on eBay.

"I wasn't even aware that they were supposed to be sold, let alone donated to Goodwill," he told the outlet.

Voting machines were central to former president Donald Trump's arguments falsely claiming he beat President Biden in the 2020 election. In Michigan, Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel has accused her rival, Trump-backed Republican Matthew DePerno, of engaging in a conspiracy to gain access to voting machines used in the 2020 presidential election. 

"Our elections are and remain safe and secure," Benson in a tweet on Thursday. "We take seriously all violations of election law and will be working with authorities to ensure there are consequences for those who break the law."

Goodwill and eBay did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The European Commission said on Tuesday that it is opening an investigation into possible collusion among Volkswagen Group, BMW, and Daimler to avoid competition on developing state-of-the-art emissions control technology.

According to Bloomberg, EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager told reporters at a press conference that the investigation is not focused on price-fixing as much as it is focused on the allegation that the companies together “agreed not to use the best technology” in order to cut costs together.

The emissions control technology in question applies to both gas and diesel vehicles in the EU. A press release from the European Commission noted that it suspected the companies of agreeing to limit the development and roll-out of two types of emissions-regulating technology. The first is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, which are specific to diesel engines and reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by the vehicle. The second are “Otto” Particulate Filters (OPF), which reduce the particulate emissions from gasoline vehicles. These emissions treatment systems are based on their diesel counterparts and started appearing in Daimler vehicles after 2014.
