You knew it was just a matter of time before Apple’s Group FaceTime ‘eavesdropping’ bug drew the attention of politicians. New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched an investigation into the FaceTime flaw in hopes of understanding both its “failure to warn consumers” and reports of a “slow response” to the problem. Stated residents “need to know that their phones are safe,” Governor Cuomo added.

The State Department’s consumer protection division is accepting public complaints about the bug through a phone line Mondays through Fridays.

There’s no guarantee the investigation will lead to action. There are reports of a mother and son reporting the issue days before it became public knowledge, but it’s not clear that Apple was wasting time — the company already has a fix planned for later in the week. It also disabled Group FaceTime remotely shortly after the bug became public knowledge. If the investigation does turn up problems with Apple’s approach, though, it won’t be shocking if New York takes legal action demanding swifter and more transparent responses to privacy and security issues.

“We can confirm that a report has been filed through the anti-discrimination monitoring system in relation to chants of a possible discriminatory nature by English fans at yesterday’s match,” FIFA said in a statement.

“Subsequently, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the Football Association.”

No further details were released, but there were reports that “no surrender” was chanted by some supporters at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, as well as other potentially discriminatory songs.

The original “no surrender” chant refers to the IRA and the tensions between Unionists and Republicans over Northern Ireland’s place as part of the UK.

Some England fans were also filmed chanting the controversial “10 German bombers” song in Red Square ahead of Wednesday’s game against Croatia.

The Three Lions went on to lose 2-1 to Croatia in extra time, ending England’s dream of a first World Cup final appearance since their victory on home soil in 1966.

The Federal Communications Commission has taken preliminary steps to examine the actions of LocationSmart, a southern California company that has suddenly found itself under intense public and government scrutiny for allowing most American cell phones’ locations to be easily accessed.

As Ars reported Thursday, LocationSmart identifies the locations of phones connected to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon, often to an accuracy of a few hundred yards, reporter Brian Krebs said. While the firm claims it provides the location-lookup service only for legitimate and authorized purposes, Krebs reported that a demo tool on the LocationSmart website could be used by just about anyone to surreptitiously track the real-time whereabouts of just about anyone else.

“I can confirm the matter has been referred to the Enforcement Bureau,” wrote FCC spokesman Neil Grace in a Friday afternoon email to Ars.

Researchers from Brigham Young University (BYU) have created a true 3D hologram, or “volumetric image,” to use the correct term. BYU’s device uses lasers to trap a tiny particle in free space, and force it to move in a path, much like how electromagnets deflect the electron beam in a CRT television. Other blue, red and green lasers then illuminate it. If the particle moves fast enough, it creates the illusion of a solid animated holographic image.

A user posted on the anonymous app Blind claiming that Lyft employees abused their access to customer data, from gathering info on exes to acquiring Mark Zuckerberg’s personal info. A Lyft spokesperson confirmed to The Information that the company is investigating whether these incidents occurred.

The anonymous user, who claimed to have worked at Lyft, painted a lurid picture of how employees abused their unusually high access to customer data. Some would look up their ex-romantic partners, while others check whether their significant others were headed where they said.

This user claimed to have ‘seen employees’ do all this and more, including stalking attractive people they’d met while taking the multi-rider Lyft Line service. They’d even use the access to look up the ‘rider ratings’ and personal information of executives at Lyft and other companies — one bragged about snagging Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s phone number — as well as Hollywood actresses and porn stars, according to The Information.

Each query into the customer database is logged and attributed to a specific employee, according to a statement provided to The Information. All employees are trained in data privacy and responsible use policy, which prohibit abusing customer data for reasons other than required by that employee’s specific role. And, of course, they’re required to sign confidentiality and “responsible use” agreements barring them from accessing, using or disclosing customer data beyond their job needs.

At least these are standard expectations for responsibility for a company handling customer data. Uber got in trouble two years ago for giving employees similar access to its user information in its ‘God View’ program, but characteristically didn’t overtly restrict its workers from abusing it until the company was slapped with a $ 20,000 fine by the NY Attorney General’s office.

Bitcoin took a hit Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, falling as low as $ 15,848, after Coinbase announced it would support bitcoin cash, sending the spinoff flying to new records. Here’s the scoreboard as of Wednesday morning:

  1. Coinbase has been accused of insider-trading after bitcoin cash‘s price surged 40% following the enabling — and subsequent disabling— of the token by the cryptocurrency exchange. “Given the price increase in the hours leading up the announcement, we will be conducting an investigation into this matter,” CEO Brian Armstrong said in a blog post.
  2. Litecoin creator Charlie Lee had faced similar allegations. He announced in a Reddit post on Wednesday that he had “sold and donated” all of his litecoin holdings over recent days, motivated by criticism from people that he was trying to influence the price of litecoin with his tweets.
  3. Global cryptocurrency markets are now averaging the same daily trading volumes as the New York Stock Exchange. 24-hour trade volume in the cryptocurrency market passed the $ 50 billion mark on Wednesday, according to data provider CoinMarketCap.com. The NYSE generally averages from $ 25 – $ 50 billion per day.
