On Sunday, auto blog Electrek reported that there were more than 3,300 Model 3 vehicles sitting in Tesla’s US inventory, according to an unnamed source familiar with the matter. The source added that, although Tesla has been working to sell every last vehicle before the end of December 31, when the $ 7,500 Federal Tax Credit for the company’s customers expires, it has still built up an inventory.
Ars contacted Tesla to confirm this information, but we did not receive an immediate response.
Tesla sold its 200,000th electric vehicle in Q2 2018, leaving the company with two remaining quarters to sell vehicles that would receive the full tax credit. Starting January 1, all newly delivered Teslas will only qualify for a $ 3,750 Federal Tax Credit.

There’s an important split, defined by age group, in which millennials in the US are moving out of their parents’ homes.
This year, the share of 18 to 24 year olds living at home fell to the lowest level in six years, Census Bureau data show.
Younger millennials can thank a healthy jobs market that’s helping them earn enough to pay rent, and a boom in multifamily housing construction that’s creating the roofs over their heads, according to Matthew Pointon, the property economist at Capital Economics.
But the share of older millennials ages 25 to 34 that lives with their parents has held steady, as the chart below shows, even as younger millennials have moved out at a faster rate.
“We suspect the fact that the share of 25-34 year olds living at home didn’t decline is down to the lack of homes for sale,” Pointon said in a note on Friday.
Capital Economics
House prices have recovered since the financial crisis. That’s created a market favorable for home sellers since property values have appreciated and continue to rise, particularly in large cities.
Prices are rising at double the annual rate of appreciation in a “normal” market, according to Zillow. An S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller report out last week showed that home prices in 20 major cities rose in September at the fastest pace in over three years.
What’s accelerating these price increases is a shortage of affordable housing. Construction has lagged the level of demand partly because of rising land and labor costs.
All this is proving tough for some buyers, especially those without the means to shop around in the luxury market for multi-million-dollar homes, where there’s less of an inventory crunch.
The older group of millennials “is likely to include Americans looking to buy rather than rent, who are perhaps living with their parents to save for a down payment,” Pointon said.
Possible tax changes could make homebuying even harder for older millennials. A proposed plan in the House Republican tax bill would cut the mortgage interest deduction in half, to a cap of $ 500,000. Homebuilder and realtor trade organizations criticized the proposal, arguing that it dampens the tax benefits of homeownership.
“The biggest risk of 2018 is not a bubble in home prices, but that fewer middle-class buyers will be able to keep pace with price increases,” said Redfin chief economist Nela Richardson in a note.

The September oil price rally was predicated on improving oil market fundamentals, bolstering confidence that the rebalancing process was accelerating. But the inventory declines reported in the third quarter might be “as good as it gets,” with inventories returning to small increases next year, according to a new report from Goldman Sachs.
The third quarter appeared to finally be the turning point for an oil market suffering from a more than three-year downturn. The OPEC deal was finally bearing fruit—inventories started posting substantial declines after a few years at or near record levels. That translated into a newfound bullishness in the market, and sizable price increases for WTI and Brent, particularly in September.
But Goldman says that the third quarter could have been the peak for drawdowns, due to a variety of factors that could partially reverse going forward. For example, oil production outside of OPEC (excluding the U.S.) fell in recent months, largely due to maintenance in the North Sea, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Brazil.
Also, OPEC compliance was particularly high in the third quarter, with moderating output in Libya and Nigeria combining with stepped-up efforts in Iraq. Goldman said that oil production from OPEC (excluding Libya and Nigeria) and Russia hit 41.55 million barrels per day in the third quarter, adding just 110,000 bpd from the quarter before. That was less than half of the 230,000 bpd increase that the investment bank originally predicted.
Another reason why the bullishness over the past few months may prove to be fleeting is that demand was unusually robust, averaging a 2.3 mb/d annualized increase in the second quarter, followed by a “still robust” 1.6 mb/d growth rate in the third. In other words, demand grew by 300,000 bpd more than Goldman predicted earlier this year.
Finally, U.S. shale’s growth was “delayed,” perhaps by the growing backlog of drilled but uncompleted wells (DUCs), but also because of Hurricane Harvey, which temporarily knocked U.S. oil production offline.
All of these trends combined to significantly tighten the oil market in the third quarter, leading to impressive inventory declines.
However, these trends may not be durable. U.S. shale, for example, is expected to resume growth, adding 290,000 bpd of new supply in the last three months of 2017, according to a Goldman Sachs forecast. Meanwhile, with several oil fields in the North Sea, Brazil, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan set to resume after maintenance, non-OPEC supply will pick up.
Moreover, OPEC compliance could have possibly hit a high watermark. Preliminary data for September looks like OPEC oil exports jumped by 0.5 mb/d, month-on-month, as shipments rose in Iraq, the UAE and Nigeria. Libya might also add supplies back into operation in the fourth quarter.
Put all of these factors together, and the inventory decline rate will narrow sharply from 795,000 bpd in the third quarter to a modest decline of just 180,000 bpd in the fourth quarter. Then, inventories start to build again in the first quarter of 2018 at a rate of 60,000 bpd, Goldman predicts.
It’s a rather bearish conclusion. Essentially, the markets began to think that rebalancing was accelerating in the third quarter, but the pace of tightening could have simply been at its strongest point.
Nevertheless, the exceptional stock drawdown in the third quarter erased a lot of excess supply on the market. Inventories are dramatically lower than they used to be, and even if the rebalancing effort loses some momentum, few expect oil prices to drop substantially from current levels.
Goldman highlighted one particularly encouraging development in its report. Brent oil futures are still in a state of backwardation, which it sees as proof that market conditions are much tighter than they used to be. “[As] we have argued previously, timespreads don’t lie about fundamentals,” Goldman analysts wrote, pointing out that a fundamentally weak oil market would not be able to support backwardation for very long. “Today’s spread levels tell us the rebalancing has progressed significantly.”

Imagine a warehouse buzzing with tiny drones that automatically track and monitor inventory from afar, leaving workers free to manage and move material. That’s the new system developed by MIT researchers, which could prevent mismatches and help employees find particular items faster on top of looking really cool with a bunch of worker drones zipping around.
Most importantly, small drones fly around safely as they read RFID tags on inventory from “tens of meters away” with a 19 cm margin of error, according to a report introducing the system. But warehouse-safe tiny UAVs aren’t big enough to carry RFID readers that reach such a range — so the MIT researchers simply made the drones relay signals from standard readers to items and back. That means these little fleets can work with existing RFID-reading systems, software and tags.
Per MIT’s news outlet:
“Between 2003 and 2011, the U.S. Army lost track of $ 5.8 billion of supplies among its warehouses,” says Fadel Adib, the Sony Corporation Career Development Assistant Professor of Media Arts and Sciences, whose group at the MIT Media Lab developed the new system. “In 2016, the U.S. National Retail Federation reported that shrinkage — loss of items in retail stores — averaged around $ 45.2 billion annually. By enabling drones to find and localize items and equipment, this research will provide a fundamental technological advancement for solving these problems.”
RFID isn’t the flashy tech it once was, with flash-in-the-pan applications to preserve sake, track aquarium wildlife or update patient tracking in hospitals. But it’s still used in plenty of warehouses, so MIT’s system, cutely titled RFly in the research team’s paper, could be a novel way to autonomously keep track of inventories. Especially whenever Amazon’s drones start flying deliveries directly from warehouses.

DETROIT — U.S. carmakers said on Tuesday they continued to slash low-margin sales to daily rental fleets in July as General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles struggled to curb a slide in retail sales.
July is on track to be the fifth straight month in which the annual pace of car and light truck sales declined from the same month a year ago, in part because of fewer fleet sales, analysts and industry executives said. July 2016 sales hit a strong 17.9-million-vehicle pace.
GM said the seasonally adjusted annual sales rate fell to an estimated 16.9 million vehicles in July.
At midmorning on Tuesday, GM shares were down 3.4 percent at $ 34.77, Ford was down 2.8 percent at $ 10.91, and Fiat Chrysler shares were down 0.3 percent at $ 12.05 in New York.
GM sales dropped 15 percent from a year ago to 226,107 vehicles, as the company cut rental fleet sales more than 80 percent. The automaker said inventories of unsold vehicles at month’s end were 104 days, down from 105 days at the end of June. GM has promised investors to reduce inventories to 70 days by year-end.
Ford said its July sales dipped 7.5 percent to 200,212 vehicles, as it cut fleet sales more than 26 percent. Inventories fell to 77 days from 79 the previous month.
Fiat Chrysler said sales dropped 10 percent to 161,477, as it also cut back sales to daily rental fleets.
Among the top Japanese companies, only Toyota reported a year-to-year gain, with sales up 4 percent to 222,057 — just 4,000 units behind GM. Honda sales were down 1 percent to 150,980 — its first-quarter sales continuing to decline in North America but seeing a big increase in China. And Nissan sales fell 3 percent to 128,295.
GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler have cautioned that second-half financial results likely will be lower than first-half results, in part reflecting production cuts in North America and pricing pressures.
The automakers this year have been deliberately dialing back sales to rental-car companies, which often generate little to no profit, while struggling to keep retail sales from sagging further, according to industry analysts.
Industry consultant LMC cut its full-year forecast for new vehicle sales to 17 million vehicles. Automakers sold a record 17.55 million vehicles in the United States in 2016. The projected difference in sales is equivalent to the annual output of two large assembly plants.

Amazon sells a wide variety of products, but you can’t buy anything and everything through the online retailer. The company is reportedly trying to change this by sacrificing huge profits in favor of efficiency—according to a CNBC report, Amazon contacted thousands of third-party retailers via e-mail about taking part in a new program in which Amazon would buy their inventory at full price. Amazon would then be able to sell those products on its website, allowing it to quickly fulfill more orders around the world.
According to the e-mail obtained by CNBC, Amazon is offering “no additional fees” for a limited time for the third-party retailers that choose to be part of the new program. Amazon will buy their inventory at local market price, meaning Amazon likely won’t make much of a profit on those items if and when they sell on its website. But according to an Amazon spokesperson that confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail, profit isn’t the biggest goal of this program.
“When items are unavailable in a particular geography, we provide customers with selection from another marketplace,” the spokesperson said. “This offers customers a wider selection of great brands and helps sellers increase sales.”
