By detecting cancer earlier, potentially before symptoms have even appeared, tens of thousands of lives could be saved every year.

It would also reduce the need for costly and invasive internal investigations, biopsies and scans.

Multiple large-scale clinical trials, partly funded by the Government, are under way involving thousands of patients.

The aim is to identify signatures for a range of tumours using a pioneering chemical sensor on a silicon microchip.

Sensitivity and accuracy is the holy grail of cancer diagnostics.

Dr Rintoul

Although experiments in using breath tests for cancer have been carried out before, researchers say the latest technology is the most sensitive to date, and also the most accurate for picking up early signs of the disease.

The microchip used can be reprogrammed to detect different biomarkers.

The first “breath biopsies” will aim to detect lung, bowel, oesophagus and stomach cancer.

Trials will later be expanded to include cancers of the pancreas, prostate and bladder.

Research has started on 4,000 patients to identify lung cancer – most often detected at a late stage when it can be terminal – in a project known as the LuCID trial.

Details will be showcased at two leading cancer conferences later this month in Toronto and Paris.

Last month experts at Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre, the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust started recruiting people to identify breath biomarkers for early detection across a range of other cancers, starting with oesophageal and stomach cancer.

They plan to expand this to include prostate, pancreatic and bladder cancer and it is hoped there will be close to 200 participants in each study.

A third study, led by experts at Warwick University and the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is recruiting 1,400 trial subjects for the Intercept trial aimed at the early identification of colorectal cancer – currently detected late in 90 per cent of cases.

Research shows early diagnosis can dramatically improve survival rates, with 93 per cent of patients surviving five years following early intervention.

Dr Pippa Corrie, of the Government’s National Institute of Health Research, which is helping to fund the trials, and a leading cancer expert at Cambridge University Hospitals said: “The NIHR is leading a strong programme of studies aimed at early detection of cancer.

Ground-breaking technologies that analyse the chemicals in our breath are currently being tested in large-scale trials across the UK.

“Our aim is for this research to help diagnose and treat cancers earlier, making a real difference to survival.”

Dr Robert Rintoul, lung cancer specialist at Royal Papworth Hospital, who is running the LuCID breath test trial for lung cancer at 26 sites across the UK, plus sites in Greece, Italy and Belgium, said: “I am very excited about this work.

“We don’t have a good technique for identifying early stage lung cancer.”

It has long been known that there are distinctive chemical markers from cancers that are passed into our airways and exhaled when we breathe out.

Previous research has shown these can be detected using bulky apparatus but to date results have not been very accurate.

It is thought the new breathalyser kit will be small and easy enough to use in a doctor’s surgery or on a hospital ward.

Dr Rintoul added: “We hope we will be able to detect cancers with more specificity and more sensitivity than previous tests and the new breath collection mask and microchip are at the heart of this.

“Sensitivity and accuracy is the holy grail of cancer diagnostics.

“Although there have been other breath tests trialled, we hope this new technology will be more sensitive and accurate for detecting early stage disease.”

The research has been developed by Cambridge-based diagnostics company Owlstone Medical, whose scientific advisers include Sir Bruce Ponder, professor of oncology at the University of Cambridge, Dr Christian Frezza, of the Medical Research Council Unit at the University of Cambridge, and Dr Chris Mayhew, director of the Institute of Breath Research at the University of Innsbruck and lead molecular physicist at the University of Birmingham.

Technology behind machine that can sniff out tumours

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Breath is collected in a receiver mask which pools samples into metal cartridges. Samples can be analysed, removed and stored. It is hoped that in future the mask will be able to analyse the sample in real time.

WHAT DOES IT MEASURE?

The new technology assesses markers in the breath known as Volatile Organic Compounds.

VOCs are contained in every breath and over recent years increasing numbers have been linked to certain cancers.

Sniffing out VOCs is also how animals such as dogs and fruit flies have been shown to identify the presence of some cancers.

The samples are then fed through an analyser which is based on pioneering technology known as Field Asymmetric Ion Mobility Spectrometry.

This will distinguish between the compounds according to the differences in the speed they move through a gas. The kit also contains a microchip which can be reprogrammed to identify the specific “fingerprint” of different cancer types.

Cancer child patient

Around 520 children and young people die from cancer every year in the UK (Image: GETTY)

WHAT EXACTLY IS A VOC?

The body produces a wide range of Volatile Organic Compounds that reflect cellular activity.

These are altered by disease, making them potential biomarkers in the breath.

VOCs, which each have a distinct odour, can also be picked up in blood, urine, faeces, spit and sweat. Biomarkers of this kind have the potential to revolutionise medicine by allowing diagnosis of a broad range of diseases through a simple non-invasive test.

HOW ACCURATE IS IT?

The sensitivity of the equipment means VOCs can be picked up at low parts per billion and in some cases per trillion.

This means that it is so selective that even in a typical breath sample containing hundreds of VOCs unrelated to the disease of interest, it can ignore “chemical noise” and identify only disease biomarkers of interest – which means there is less chance of false readings.

Don’t be surprised if you see adults regressing back to their childhood after they see this summer’s comedy Tag.

The feature directorial debut from television and stand-up special director Jeff Tomsic follows Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner and Jake Johnson as a group of five friends who have been playing a game of tag intermittently for around 30 years. Based on a surprisingly true story, the film brings a mix of stylized action and comedy together for a movie that could be the sleeper hit of the summer.

Tag Featurette

If you haven’t yet heard about Tag, this featurette with interviews with the aforementioned stars of the movie, as well as Annabelle Wallis, Leslie Bibb, Isla Fisher and Rashida Jones should lay out the basics for you. Plus, you get a glimpse behind the scenes of production to see B-roll of scenes that haven’t been shown in trailers yet.

Watch the Tag Clip

Meanwhile, Machinima debuted an exclusive clip (don’t worry, it’s cued to the clip so you don’t have to watch the whole video) from the movie featuring Hannibal Buress have a very intimate conversation with his therapist, only to be interrupted by his friends. It’s just a taste of how far these friends will to make someone else “it.” Surely the movie will have many more embarrassing interruptions and chases, all in the name of friendship.

If this movie is a hit, and something tells me it will be, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bunch of adults try to replicate this kind of grown up tomfoolery. At the very least, I can see games of tag like this playing out for the first few weeks after the movie comes out, but I can’t imagine they’ll last anywhere near as long as the game that inspired this movie.

For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade—risking their necks, their jobs and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry: “You’re It!” This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready. Based on a true story, the New Line Cinema comedy “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.

Tag is set to hit theaters on June 15, 2018.

An invasive, toxic species of caterpillar has officials in the UK on edge. Authorities are now warning residents to avoid the caterpillars and their prickly, poisonous hairs that can irritate and kill.

“It’s time to be vigilant! Oak Processionary Moth spotted in parks across Bexley,” the Royal Forestry Society tweeted last week. (Bexley is a south-east London borough.)

So far, officials have only seen nests and emerging larvae of the toxic oak processionary moth, or OPM (Thaumetopoea processionea). The larvae, aka caterpillars, aren’t expected to fully hatch and begin moving around and eating oak foliage until around mid-May, at which point they pose a danger to humans as well as the trees.

Ewan McGregor Star Wars Obi-Wan

Let’s start, as every post on the Internet should, with Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. I’ve polled the entire planet, and pretty much everyone wants McGregor to reprise his role from the prequels in a Kenobi standalone film, which is reportedly in development. That includes, of course, McGregor himself. But he insists he still hasn’t heard anything from Lucasfilm. As he told reporters backstage at the Golden Globes last weekend: “There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do.” There’s more info at The Hollywood Reporter, including a photo of McGregor working out while sporting a very Kenobi-like beard. #forscience

Star Wars The Force Awakens ending

Your very own lightsaber is calling to you, reports Blooloop. Disney recently filed a patent for “systems and methods for augmenting an appearance of a hilt to simulate a bladed weapon,” likely to be used as part of an AR experience in the Galaxy’s Edge section of Disney theme parks. In other words: Laser swords for everyone!

Star Wars The Force Awakens - Finn and Rey

Mark Hamill rocked the Star Wars universe by voicing his initial displeasure with Rian Johnson’s plans for Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. As it turns out, another lead actor also wasn’t thrilled with her character’s plot. At the BAFTA Q&A for The Last Jedi, Daisy Ridley expressed her “reservations” over Rey’s plot, saying: “I thought, ‘Where is John [Boyega]? He’s away from me, and I don’t want to be away from him.’” The comment earned appreciative laughter, and was most likely meant to display Ridley’s closeness with Boyega, rather than Rey’s closeness with Finn. Judge for yourself at ComicBook.com.

A report from the German site Jedi-Bibliothek has now been confirmed by Disney XD: the fourth season of Star Wars Rebels returns on February 24 with an episode titled “Jedi Night.” More information – including slightly spoilery episode descriptions – can be found over at Den of Geek!. What? No, I’m not already crying. Nothing to see here, move along.

While we’re all now waiting with bated breath for a new Rebels trailer, showrunner Dave Filoni tweeted out a teasing, behind-the-scenes photo of a scoring session featuring the (absolutely sublime) music of Kevin Kiner.

Han Solo Theme - John Williams

Speaking of sublime music, the iconic John Williams gave a delightful interview to Variety about his two 2017 film scores potentially up for Oscar nominations: The Last Jedi and Steven Spielberg’s The Post. (Williams already has more Oscar nominations that any human in history, but he could earn his 51st and even 52nd when the next batch of noms are announced). Williams delivers some wonderful, behind-the-scenes tidbits about both scores, while also confirming that he plans to come back and score Star Wars Episode IX, which is all well and good, because the world would literally grind to a halt if he didn’t.

Star Wars The Last Jedi

One thing we can all agree on when it comes to The Last Jedi: John Williams’ score is, as always, nothing short of excellent. As reported by MakingStarWars.net, Disney recently released an extended version of the TLJ soundtrack, which you can listen to here.

starwars-lastjedi-kyloren-nohelmet

In an interview with People, Rian Johnson explained the secret behind those exhilarating Force bond scenes with Kylo and Rey: actually having both actors present. “Every single time we shot one of their sides, the other person was off camera,” Johnson said. “Even to the point where Adam flew to Ireland just to be off camera for Daisy’s stuff, which was essential because they’re such intimate conversations. And that also meant we had to shoot each of those scenes twice basically, which meant the rehearsal time was really important.”

Star Wars The Last Jedi images

Already sick of schlepping to the theater to take in repeated viewings of The Last Jedi? Rumor has it, you can buy TLJ on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD on March 27 and watch Chewie roast Porgs on a loop in the comfort of your own home. That date comes to you from The Digital Bits and is based on a number of retail sources.

Snoke's throne room

Heroic Hollywood picked out another cool factoid from The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Speaking about Snoke’s blood-red throne room, Design Supervisor Kevin Jenkins discussed some of the influences behind the bold visual style: “Early on, the one thing that stuck was the heavy red with colonnade banners. It is part of the Ran/Kurosawa thing—the samurai influence. It’s a colonnade leading you to a dais and a chair. Rian didn’t mention Twin Peaks’s Black Lodge—the red room—but we all did in an art department meeting.” All in all, that’s a damn fine design.

Star Wars Explained addresses another of the billion burning questions fans have about plot points in The Last Jedi: Why didn’t Snoke or Kylo Ren have yellow Dark Side eyes, like Anakin/Vader in Revenge of the Sith and the Emperor in Return of the Jedi? Hear the answer to that question and more in the video above.

Researchers create less invasive method for placing brain electrodes https://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-less-invasive-method-for-placing-brain-electrodes/ https://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-less-invasive-method-for-placing-brain-electrodes/#respond Tue, 19 Dec 2017 02:41:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-less-invasive-method-for-placing-brain-electrodes/

Our neurons are firing all the time, receiving signals from other neurons and sending signals of their own. To get a better understanding of how the brain works, scientists often listen in to those signals to see what kind of messages certain neurons send and how often they send them. Doing that often requires researchers to implant an electrode into the brain, which when it’s close enough to a neuron, can pick up on the electrical signals that propagate through the neuron. However, getting an electrode into the brain isn’t so easy. They either have to be rigid enough to penetrate the brain and remain straight or be inserted through needles that can keep them straight until they’re safely in place. The problem is those rigid structures cause damage as they move through the brain and minimizing that damage is a goal that scientists are constantly working towards.

Researchers in Texas have come up with a new method that allows them to insert tiny, flexible electrodes into the brain, reducing inadvertent damage. Just trying to push the electrodes into brain tissue doesn’t work — they buckle and can’t get into the tissue. These researchers instead placed the electrodes inside small tubes and surrounded them with a viscous fluid. When the fluid was quickly pushed through the device, it pulled the electrode along with it and with enough force for the electrode to penetrate millimeters deep into tissue on its own.

“The electrode is like a cooked noodle that you’re trying to put into a bowl of Jello,” Jacob Robinson, a Rice University researcher on the project said in a statement. “By itself, it doesn’t work. But if you put that noodle under running water, the water pulls the noodle straight.” And the team pointed out that with flexible items, it’s easier to pull them than push them. “That’s why trains are pulled, not pushed,” said Rice University chemist Matteo Pasquali. And because it surrounds the electrode, the fluid’s pull is distributed all along the electrode, preventing it from buckling when it hits the tissue.

The team showed that their device could successfully insert a flexible electrode into a gel, a small, squishy, water-dwelling organism called a Hydra, slices of mouse brain and living rats’ brains. In the Hydra, brain slices and rat brains, the researchers were able to record neuronal activity with the electrode.

This method could be very useful for scientists studying the brain and the researchers say it has the potential to be used in treatment applications that use electrodes to manage certain conditions like epilepsy or allow people to control artificial limbs.

The research was recently published in ACS Nano Letters. You can check out the fluidic microdrive in action in the video below.
