Some viewers have also suggested June could eventually die to fit with the tone of Margaret Atwood’s original novel, which leaves it ambiguous as to whether or not the narrator survives her ordeal.

With the release of sequel novel The Testaments, enthusiastic fans have been eating up the Booker Prize winning book for any clues for the next season.

An inevitable series based on the sequel has also been announced, taking place decades after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Once the coronavirus outbreak has passed, production is expected to resume as soon as possible and fans can expect more content from the world of Atwood’s sombre vision of the future.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is now available to stream on Hulu.

‘Freedom of navigation isn’t a freedom to invade & infringe upon sovereignty’ – China’s UK envoy https://briefnews.eu/freedom-of-navigation-isnt-a-freedom-to-invade-infringe-upon-sovereignty-chinas-uk-envoy/ https://briefnews.eu/freedom-of-navigation-isnt-a-freedom-to-invade-infringe-upon-sovereignty-chinas-uk-envoy/#respond Fri, 21 Sep 2018 07:24:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/freedom-of-navigation-isnt-a-freedom-to-invade-infringe-upon-sovereignty-chinas-uk-envoy/

Beijing “cherishes” the freedom of navigation principle but will not remain idle as Western powers use it as a pretext to show off their “military might” and “create trouble” in the South China Sea, China’s UK ambassador has said.

“Some big countries outside the region did not seem to appreciate the peace and tranquility in the South China Sea. They sent warships and aircraft all the way to the South China Sea to create trouble,” Ambassador Liu Xiaoming told the annual Induction Programme for Commonwealth Diplomats, held in London.

China, the Ambassador stressed, has no problem with freedom of navigation and actually “cherishes” the principle, which allows “hundreds of thousands” of ships to sail through the disputed waters of one of the world’s biggest trade arteries. Beijing is only concerned when the US vessels and those of their allies brazenly breach the territorial waters of the of the Paracel and the Spratly chain of islands, where China has been building up military infrastructure to protect its territorial claims.

“Under the excuse of so-called ‘freedom of navigation’, they ignored the vast sea lane and chose to sail into the adjacent waters of China’s islands and reefs to show off their military might,” the ambassador said, calling such actions a “serious infringement” of China’s sovereignty and a threat to security as well as the peace and stability of the region.

‘Play by the rules’: UK Defense Sec sends warships to South China Sea in veiled challenge to Beijing

“Freedom of navigation is not a license to do whatever one wishes. Freedom of navigation is not freedom to invade other country’s territorial waters and infringe upon other country’s sovereignty. Such ‘freedom’ must be stopped. Otherwise, the South China Sea will never be tranquil,” the Chinese envoy to the UK warned.

The resource-rich South China Sea is the subject of conflicting and overlapping claims by a number of countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The US has been sending its vessels and airplanes to carry out patrol missions in the disputed area, repeatedly causing outcries from Beijing.

Japan’s largest warship trains with US naval strike group in contested South China Sea

American allies, namely the UK and Japan, have also agitated China by shows of force in the disputed waters. Just last week the Maritime Self-Defence Force of Japan held submarine drills in the region, with the participation of destroyers. In early September, Beijing was forced to dispatch a frigate and two helicopters to escort the UK’s HMS Albion through the South China Sea.

Strange things keep happening in ‘Fortnite’ and events in the video game have started to invade the real world https://briefnews.eu/strange-things-keep-happening-in-fortnite-and-events-in-the-video-game-have-started-to-invade-the-real-world/ https://briefnews.eu/strange-things-keep-happening-in-fortnite-and-events-in-the-video-game-have-started-to-invade-the-real-world/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2018 23:54:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strange-things-keep-happening-in-fortnite-and-events-in-the-video-game-have-started-to-invade-the-real-world/ Fortnite at E3 2018Ben Gilbert / Business Insider

The creators of “Fortnite: Battle Royale” are known for keeping players on their toes with weekly — and sometimes daily — additions to the game, including new items, limited-time game modes, and fun and interesting challenges.

In lieu of simply announcing what the newest addition to the game will be, the developers will often leave cryptic hints and easter eggs scattered across the island (or in the game’s code) for the most dedicated fans to decode ahead of time.

In Fortnite, there is no more hotly-anticipated change than the transitioning of Seasons, which brings a new theme to the game’s Battle Pass, and often many cosmetic changes to the map. For example, in the days leading up to the beginning of Season 4, the game hinted that a meteor shower would change the island forever. When the meteor did hit, it caused a large crater in the enter of the map, turning Dusty Depot into the craterous Dusty Divot.

Now, Season 5 is only three days away and Epic Games’ clues are only getting weirder and more mysterious. In addition to the in-game easter eggs that we’ve come to expect from Epic, hints toward the future of the game have also started to appear in the real world.

Here’s an overview of all the biggest changes to Fortnite ahead of Season 5:

Two weekends ago, a one-time in-game event featured a rocket launch and rifts in the space-time continuum, and nothing has been the same on the island since.

Enzait Films / YouTube channel Enzait

The huge rocket embedded into the side of the mountain just northeast of Snobby Shores — which many, including this reporter, previously believed to be a missile — launched into the sky last Saturday, and nearly obliterated Tilted Towers before a crack in the space-time continuum swallowed it up.

After traveling in and out through a few more inter-dimensional “rifts,” the rocket eventually careened into an invisible dome above the center of the map, causing a large crack to form in the sky. The sun rose shortly afterward, and the rocket was gone.

You can watch a full cinematic-style recording of the launch, recorded and edited by YouTube filmmaker Enzait Films here:

Since the launch, rifts have been spotted all over the map, and a few of the map’s landmarks have disappeared through them.

One player managed to capture a video of the goofy-faced burger sign disappearing into a rift from atop the Durr Burger restraunt:

The signs welcoming players to Lonely Lodge and the motel in Anarchy Acres have also mysteriously disappeared in the same way since the rocket launch.

Then, a landmark from the game resurfaced…in the real world.

On Friday last week, a photographer from Los Angeles spotted the Durr Burger statue in the California desert.

‘Walking Dead’ invade Moscow as part of traditional Mexican carnival (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/walking-dead-invade-moscow-as-part-of-traditional-mexican-carnival-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/walking-dead-invade-moscow-as-part-of-traditional-mexican-carnival-photos/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 13:54:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/walking-dead-invade-moscow-as-part-of-traditional-mexican-carnival-photos/

Hundreds of people wearing skull makeup and donning spooky carnival costumes filled the center of Moscow on Friday to celebrate Mexico’s Day of the Dead.

The Mexican tradition pays tribute to deceased relatives and dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when people believed that the souls of dead ancestors returned home for one day to spend time with their families.

Spiritual guests were greeted with special gifts that were presented on a specially-designed altar in the family home.

The ancient tradition has been modified over the years, transitioning from a religious ritual to a day of celebrations and festivities, with colorful costumes that resemble outfits from Halloween carnivals.

Although the holiday is celebrated in autumn, the Mexican fan house in Moscow arranged an event at the end of June to help Russians get to know the national culture and feel the atmosphere of the Mexican party.

More than 5,000 Russian guests attended the massive costume party in Gostiny Dvor in the center of the Russian capital. The carnival-goers had initially planned to march on Red Square, but had to settle for a scaled-back celebration after failing to coordinate with local authorities.

An invasive, toxic species of caterpillar has officials in the UK on edge. Authorities are now warning residents to avoid the caterpillars and their prickly, poisonous hairs that can irritate and kill.

“It’s time to be vigilant! Oak Processionary Moth spotted in parks across Bexley,” the Royal Forestry Society tweeted last week. (Bexley is a south-east London borough.)

So far, officials have only seen nests and emerging larvae of the toxic oak processionary moth, or OPM (Thaumetopoea processionea). The larvae, aka caterpillars, aren’t expected to fully hatch and begin moving around and eating oak foliage until around mid-May, at which point they pose a danger to humans as well as the trees.

North Korean special forces are training to invade South Korea with paragliders https://briefnews.eu/north-korean-special-forces-are-training-to-invade-south-korea-with-paragliders/ https://briefnews.eu/north-korean-special-forces-are-training-to-invade-south-korea-with-paragliders/#respond Wed, 11 Oct 2017 21:36:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/north-korean-special-forces-are-training-to-invade-south-korea-with-paragliders/ ParagliderGetty Images

North Korean special forces have been training to invade South Korea with paragliders, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

The drills were conducted in mid-September at a training site with a building modeled after the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command in Seoul, Yonhap reported.

Special forces from North Korea’s navy, air force, 11th army corps, and sniper brigade participated, according to Newsweek.

Paragliders can fly below radar and can also be folded down and transported easily.

“A paraglider flies at a low altitude without making a sound. It could be useful for making a surprise attack, like a drone,” a South Korean defense official told Yonhap.

“I believe that North Korean special forces are adopting amazing methods of infiltration with limited resources,” the official said.

The US and South Korea, in response, conducted their own short-range air-defense drills, known as SHORAD, in late September to thwart “low altitude cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems and air breathing threats,” Newsweek reported, citing a US Army press release.

The joint drills were aimed at defending “a critical location, de-conflicting engagements of enemy aircraft based on sector of fire, and utilizing secondary means of targeting enemy aircraft when their primary weapon system becomes combat ineffective,” the US Army said, adding that the drills included “scout helicopters and a perimeter attack by ROK Special Forces.”

South Korean Gin Gliders, one of the world’s largest producers of paragliders, used to operate in the Kaesong Industrial Complex, which is a collaborative economic area between the North and South. Seoul closed the complex in early 2016 in response to North Korea’s missile tests.

Pyongyang, however, reopened the plant last week despite Seoul’s objections, according to Newsweek.

The US Army said it will continue the SHORAD drills in the coming months.

‘Resistance reigns’: Flash-mob protesters invade park near Trump’s plush LA golf club (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/resistance-reigns-flash-mob-protesters-invade-park-near-trumps-plush-la-golf-club-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/resistance-reigns-flash-mob-protesters-invade-park-near-trumps-plush-la-golf-club-photos/#respond Sun, 14 May 2017 10:41:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/resistance-reigns-flash-mob-protesters-invade-park-near-trumps-plush-la-golf-club-photos/

A crowd of protesters invaded a park adjoining President Donald Trump’s Los Angeles golf course on Saturday to spell out the world of ‘resist’ near the luxury resort.

Members of the Indivisible organization, a self-described grassroots campaign opposing the president, lay down on a stretch of grass in front of the Trump National Golf Club in Palos Verdes.

The flash-mob-like protest saw some 200 Indivisible supporters pose for aerial pictures after forming a series of human chains to spell out the word ‘resist’.

With the help of former congressional staffers, Indivisible has devised a guide for “individuals, groups and organizations” to help in “weakening pro-Trump Republican resolve.” The anti-Trump blueprint includes efforts to influence members of congress and advises people to get involved in local politics.

Indivisible says that, by adopting a defensive strategy that “pressures” members of congress, people can “stall” and “reaffirm the illegitimacy of the Trump agenda.”

Images from Saturday’s demonstration show the human ‘resist’ message emblazoned on a field in Founder’s Park. The public amenity is around 300 meters from the entrance to the Trump National Golf Club, where a round on the course can cost up to $ 300.

“Proud to have been a part of this demonstration this morning with Indivisible San Pedro at the public park adjacent to the Trump National Golf Course,” said protester Jane Lofton on Instagram.

Another Indivisible supporter said the group, whose Saturday protest included children, will continue to oppose Donald Trump’s government.

“This morning we resisted at a Trump property,” said Instagram user Molliebrent. “And we’ll keep resisting.”

On March 12, Trump’s Palos Verdes site was also targeted by anonymous environmentalists, who carved the words ‘No more tigers, no more woods’ into a golf green.

The group later explained to the Washington Post that the stunt had been staged in response to the Trump administration’s “blatant disregard” of environmental issues.

MANILA (Reuters) – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte warned on Wednesday he might “invade” an island stronghold of the Islamic State-linked Abu Sayyaf to “finish the game” following a thwarted attempt by the group to kidnap tourists on a resort island last week.

Duterte offered cash rewards for the capture, dead or alive, of six Abu Sayyaf militants still at large following a day-long clash last week on Bohol island, which killed six rebels and four members of the security forces.

The shootout on Bohol followed warnings against travel to central Philippine islands by several Western countries, which cited unconfirmed intelligence of possible kidnap plans. The clash erupted after residents tipped-off authorities about the arrival of armed men on boats.

The incident was highly significant, coming during Holy Week at a location far from Abu Sayyaf’s traditional field of operations on remote Jolo, Tawi Tawi and Basilan islands.

Duterte said Abu Sayyaf must not be allowed to extend its reach.

“I will, maybe, invade Jolo,” Duterte told reporters after a security briefing in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

“All army, navy, will go there. It will be a fight. That’s what they want, I will give it.”

Referring to Abu Sayyaf’s strongholds, he said: “They must stay there, My order to the navy … is to blow them up, no surrender. Shoot cannons, destroy them.”

Abu Sayyaf has its roots in separatism and the military says some elements are in close contact with Islamic State radicals in the Middle East. However, most of its activities are banditry, like piracy and kidnap. It is notorious for beheading hostages when money for their release is not paid.

Duterte said he wanted civilians to support the manhunt on Bohol and offered a reward of 6 million pesos ($ 120,668) for each of the six fugitives.

He warned Abu Sayyaf might try to “create a disaster” at an meeting of trade officials of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Duterte said he wanted to arm civilians, and encouraged them to kill not only Abu Sayyaf, but drug addicts who were armed.

Duterte’s signature policy is a war on drugs, which has killed nearly 9,000 people in 10 months, mostly users and small-time peddlers.

“My order is dead or alive … My enemy is drugs and terrorists. These drug addicts, they have firearms. Almost all of them are really paranoid. They fight.”

Picture it, Brooklyn, 2017…

Lena Dunham is a guest on tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and, based on a couple of teases the show sent out this afternoon, her visit is going to be rather golden.

As you can see in the video above, Dunham is joined by her Girls co-stars Alison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet for a Golden Girls parody in which the actresses play their millennial characters as senior citizens. (A photo tweeted by the series earlier in the day indicates that Girls‘ Andrew Rannells also shows up for the fun — perhaps in a nod to Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia’s long-forgotten gay friend, Coco? — and Kimmel aka “Officer Sausage” plays a pantless role in the festivities.)

Also appearing on Kimmel this evening (ABC, 11:30/10:30c): Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet, The Night Of‘s Riz Ahmed (who also plays Hannah’s baby daddy on Girls) and musical guest Cold War Kids.

How Artificial Intelligence Will Invade Classrooms https://briefnews.eu/how-artificial-intelligence-will-invade-classrooms/ https://briefnews.eu/how-artificial-intelligence-will-invade-classrooms/#respond Thu, 02 Feb 2017 20:29:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-artificial-intelligence-will-invade-classrooms/

Nothing reveals as much about a society, and its future, as its high schools. Yet amid accelerating change — widening inequality, unprecedented globalization and technological advances — they’ve woefully lagged behind. There are, of course, exceptions. Follow OZY’s special series High School, Disrupted to find out about the global leaders, cutting-edge trends and big ideas reimagining secondary education — for the better.

From Siri handling our schedules to smart cars driving themselves, artificial intelligence (AI) has turned our world upside down — except in education. Computers are trading on the stock markets for us, but our schools might as well be stuck in the 12th century. Children sit in the same orderly rows they have for centuries, learning Euclidean geometry while being bored to tears. Sure, modern students are glued to iPads, but technology hasn’t done much to boost their learning — at least not yet. The promise of AI might just be the long-awaited breakthrough that will change the way we all learn.

Just ask Vivienne Ming, a theoretical neuroscientist who claims to predict everything from how much money your children will make to how long they will live. She can forecast grades, even pointing to which questions they’ll get wrong on a final exam. No, she’s not wielding a crystal ball; instead, she has AI-powered software to study your child’s learning habits and social interactions through a combination of cognitive modeling and machine learning. Why all the Big Brother snooping? “Essentially, we’re talking about the same sorts of systems that beat the best poker players in the world … being repurposed to understand high school students,” says Ming, explaining how they will help today’s pupils build better futures. From AI systems that warn when and where a student will struggle to intelligent personalized tutors, here’s a glimpse of education’s future.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

How can AI help jump-start high school education?

Ming: It’s a big ambition. Can we flip the model in which tech traditionally has been this big, cumbersome thing, and instead make it an integrated part of education? People are nowadays familiar with MOOCs [massive open online courses] and the kind of online lectures that are available. But what’s most exciting is the power of AI and design-centered learning. Say I’ve got 30 kids in a classroom and an AI that can help me monitor how each of them is growing while they’re naturally learning. I don’t have to wait to do a quiz or an exam; I can get insights about how the child is developing every day and make recommendations to parents and teachers based on that information.

There are people researching emotion-expression recognition and real-time video to see just when a teacher should intervene on someone who’s working on a design project. This is very different to what most people think of when it comes to education technology. Instead, this is technology that turns a home or a classroom into a cutting-edge learning experience. It’s less about understanding the course material and more about mentally growing the person — less about the tools and more about the craftsman. That really pegs AI with natural intelligence, and puts them together in a way that has been shown to make a significant difference and will eventually break the mold of our old approach to education technology.

Why hasn’t technology flourished in classrooms yet?

Ming: Educational technology has really struggled. Many incredibly insightful projects that were developed and proven in labs have not succeeded, including AI-powered cognitive tutors that actually understand the mistakes [students] are making and can offer direct supervision. It turns out the wrong way of [integrating AI] is sitting a bunch of kids in front of a computer for hours, marginalizing the teachers. Education is probably ground zero for how the best-intentioned technologies can still really struggle to make a difference. In fact, research indicates that most educational technology actually makes inequality worse, rather than better.

What are the dangers of putting AI in schools?

Ming: We don’t want just a plug-in education. A lot of edtech uses words like personalization, but the truth is that it does plug every student into a mold, and you just follow a track. It largely assumes that every student is the same. What about the edge cases, the kids that are different? There’s always a fear that you’re going to lose a real human connection and the unique story of each child.

Also, is machine learning biased? Most notoriously, for example, Google’s face recognition labeled Black faces as gorillas, and Facebook labeled Auschwitz as a playground. [AI] is just like a person — it depends on how you raise it. There’s a degree to which these systems have been able to deal with only the most common cases: the average kid. But there are no average kids. One of the things AI must focus on is understanding our differences as much as understanding our similarities. No one has truly solved that problem. But if you don’t acknowledge it, then no amount of AI is going to dig you out of that hole.

What can AI do for high schools that has yet to be dreamed up and put into motion?

Ming: High school is probably most notable for being a transition period, moving from being a kid to being an adult. It’s a bit of a trial by fire. What AI can do in a high school context is … finally focus on the core of any high school experience — coming to understand your emotions and your relationship to your world; coming to understand metacognition, your own thought processes; and being able to self-assess and structure your plans. [High school] is a transition between you as a kid in isolation and you as an adult in the world. That doesn’t sound like education, but that turns out to be the entire game.

I’m excited about technology that will focus less on rote memorization and more on how [high schoolers] can find their sense of purpose. I want to leverage AI to change teenagers’ brains. AI can craft lessons that are specifically designed for that student to build the motivation, the creativity and the metacognition that’s going to serve them through their lives.
