The next big terrorist threat in Europe could come from IS supporters currently in prison for minor terrorism-related crimes, according to Interpol Secretary-General Jurgen Stock. As they leave jail in the coming years, their radical beliefs are likely to trigger a relapse.

“In many parts of the world, in Europe but also Asia, this generation of early supporters will be released in the next couple of years, and they may again be part of a terrorist group or those supporting terrorist activities,” Stock said, estimating that the average jailed jihadist is serving a sentence of between two and five years.

Radicalized wives & kids of ISIS fighters ‘must be identified as jihadis’ – German intel chief

“We could soon be facing a second wave of other Islamic State-linked or radicalized individuals that you might call ISIS 2.0,” he told the Anglo-American Press Association, as cited by the Guardian.

Possible members of IS sleeper cells aside, there is an ongoing threat of returning terrorists fleeing Iraq and Syria since the demise of Islamic State. Those disenchanted fighters with nothing to lose have become a major issue for local law enforcement.

“The security agencies are concerned about when they are coming back because most of them are battle hardened, they are trained, and they are internationally connected,” Stock said, noting that going to Syria and Iraq in the first place “was a huge opportunity to network on an international level.”

“These contacts still exist and we shouldn’t forget that,” he said.

It’s a guessing game as to where the retreating jihadists are going to flee when they’re squeezed out of Syria and Iraq. One of the probable destinations is southeast Asia or Africa, where there are still terrorist hotbeds. Another option for the jihadists is to keep a low profile and try to sneak back into Europe.

“With ISIS defeated geographically, these individuals will either try to move to other areas of conflict in southeast Asia, or Africa, or remain in Europe to carry out attacks,” Stock said.

Interpol has some 45,000 suspected foreign fighters in its database but it’s a Sisyphean task for local police to track them down, as many have perished on the battlefield, some are holed up in Syria or Iraq, and the whereabouts of many others is unknown.

Intelligence agencies in many countries, including in Europe, which has seen a spate of Islamist-linked terrorist attacks in recent years, have sounded the alarm over the threat posed by returnees.

Germany’s intelligence chief has warned that the children of jihadists coming from war zones can grow up to follow in the footsteps of their parents. Hans-Georg Maassen called for both widows and children of IS fighters to be treated as jihadists, arguing that they pose a considerable security risk after being brainwashed by IS propaganda.

The same concerns were echoed by the authorities in France, which has welcomed at least 300 jihadist militants back from Syria and Iraq. There have been calls for French citizens arrested on terrorist charges in Syria and Iraq to be tried there rather than brought back to France.

Cisco is linking up with Interpol to share data about the cyber criminals it finds on its network https://briefnews.eu/cisco-is-linking-up-with-interpol-to-share-data-about-the-cyber-criminals-it-finds-on-its-network/ https://briefnews.eu/cisco-is-linking-up-with-interpol-to-share-data-about-the-cyber-criminals-it-finds-on-its-network/#respond Wed, 22 Nov 2017 20:15:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cisco-is-linking-up-with-interpol-to-share-data-about-the-cyber-criminals-it-finds-on-its-network/ FILE PHOTO - A man passes an Interpol logo during the handing over ceremony of the new premises for Interpol's Global Complex for Innovation, a research and development facility, in Singapore September 30, 2014. • On Tuesday, Cisco announced that it will share “cybercrime” data with the international police network Interpol.
  • The data includes information and analysis about security threats that Cisco already aggregates through an existing research arm, Cisco Talos.
  • The company said it won’t share information about customer vulnerabilities.
  • It’s a warm nod to law enforcement in an industry that generally requires search warrants before it shares any data.

Just one day after Amazon Web Service (AWS) announced a “secret” cloud service for the CIA, another tech company is aligning itself with a government agency.

Cisco will now share “cybercrime” data with the international police network Interpol, the company announced Tuesday. That data includes “threat intelligence” to support Interpol’s work “targeting both ‘pure cybercrime’ and cyber-enabled crimes to assist member countries with identifying cyberattacks and their perpetrators.”

A spokeswoman for the company told Business Insider that Cisco will not share customer data with Interpol, which includes data about individual customer’s networks or security vulnerabilities.

Cisco is a large provider of enterprise hardware such as routers and switches, which functionally serve as a backbone for the entire internet. This means the company has access to data about some of the world’s largest corporations and governments.

Part of the data shared with Interpol will come from Cisco Talos, an existing security research group that aggregates and analyzes security data. Cisco said its security technology currently blocks 19.7 billion “threats” a day.

US tech companies usually require warrants before sharing data

Despite a charter to be politically neutral, Interpol has been accused of benefiting some countries over others. In October, for example, Russia was allowed to put a British critic of Vladimir Putin on the Interpol’s wanted list in what was widely viewed to be a politically-motivated request.

Though many tech companies have government agencies as clients, Cisco’s collaboration with Interpol is a big shift from tech’s historic approach to data requests from law enforcement agencies. Companies like Apple and Twitter, for example, generally require warrants before they will share any data with law enforcement.

Cisco, however, is billing this partnership as a necessary step toward tackling global cybersecurity challenges.

John Stewart, senior vice president and chief security officer at Cisco, said in a statement that it’s up to both public and private sectors to address cybersecurity with “equal force.”

“We are pleased to collaborate with Interpol to exchange threat intelligence and find other knowledge-sharing opportunities to fight cybercrime globally,” Stewart said.

Interpol fears ISIS trained 170+ bomb attackers for Europe – media https://briefnews.eu/interpol-fears-isis-trained-170-bomb-attackers-for-europe-media/ https://briefnews.eu/interpol-fears-isis-trained-170-bomb-attackers-for-europe-media/#respond Sat, 22 Jul 2017 15:52:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/interpol-fears-isis-trained-170-bomb-attackers-for-europe-media/

A list of dozens of suspected ISIS militants trained to deal with explosives and potentially aiming at terrorist attacks in Europe has been shared with EU intelligence by The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), the Guardian reports.

Interpol issued a list of 173 terrorists linked to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), who “may have manifested willingness to commit a suicidal attack or martyrdom to support Islam,” the Guardian reported on Friday, saying it obtained the names.

The specially trained attackers “can travel internationally, to participate in terrorist activities,” but it is unclear whether they managed to reach Europe, the report says.

While the document identifies the suspects and provides their photos, it also features such details as the date of recruitment and possible addresses, even including the mosques they could attend.

The list apparently stems from US intelligence data which was obtained through “trusted sources” during operations against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

The potential attackers were pinpointed “through materials found in the hiding places of ISIL,” according to the paper.

Interpol reportedly sent the warning to its European counterparts on May 27 and asked to share information on the suspects.

In March, then-FBI director James Comey warned that European states may face an unprecedented “terrorists diaspora” in five years, as after the defeat of ISIS, terrorists will spill over into Western Europe.

On Friday, the UK’s most senior police officer, Cressida Dick, stated that advances against ISIS in Syria and Iraq do not reduce the threat for the country.

Earlier, German Police Chief Holger Muench said that around 700 Islamists may pose a threat to German security, local media reported.

ISIS continues to plan more complex and mass-casualty attacks in the West, particularly in Europe, according to a report from Europol. The agency also warned that terrorist tactics and techniques are transferred from the current conflict zones, including the “illicit spread of bomb-making knowledge and instructions.”

Interpol have announced a 15th anniversary tour in celebration of their 2002 debut album, Turn on the Bright Lights. On Monday, the rock band revealed European tour dates for the retrospective jaunt, which includes stops at summer festivals such as Romania’s Summer Well festival and Switzerland’s Openair festival.

In addition to the news of Interpol’s Turn on the Bright Lights anniversary outing, the New York-based indie outfit disclosed their progress in assembling a brand new album, tentatively slated to be released in 2018. It will be Interpol’s sixth studio album and the first since their critically heralded 2014 return-to-form LP, El Pintor.

The upcoming anniversary docket from Interpol — guitarist Daniel Kessler, singer-guitarist Paul Banks, and drummer Sam Fogarino — currently contains dates in Europe only. However, further tour dates are reportedly forthcoming. The TOTBL tour kicks off at Lucerna Music Bar in Prague, Czech Republic, on August 9, 2017.

As reported by Paste magazine, the Interpol Turn on the Bright Lights 15th anniversary tour comprises concert dates from Austria to the Netherlands, wrapping up the currently publicized European leg with shows in the United Kingdom, France, and Spain. Interpol will be performing the Turn on the Bright Lights album in its entirety during the anniversary shows. TOTBL contained early Interpol hits like “PDA,” “Obstacle 1,” and “NYC.”

Interpol also made known the upcoming anniversary tour dates via their official website and social media outlets, posting a Turn on the Bright Lights tour announcement video on Instagram. Check out Interpol’s post below, which announces the anniversary tour dates with an animated version of the Interpol TOTBL album cover.

The word is out, we're celebrating 15 years since the release of ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’ by playing the record in its entirety during a select run of shows across Europe and the UK late this summer. Tickets are on general sale this Friday. And for the headline shows, limited tickets will be available in an exclusive pre-sale from 9am GMT on Wednesday at interpolnyc.com. It has not been reported if former Interpol bassist Carlos Dengler (previously known as Carlos D.) will be rejoining the band for the anniversary tour. Dengler played bass and wrote orchestrations for Interpol from Turn on the Bright Lights through to their 2010 self-titled album, Interpol. He left the group after the completion of Interpol. Subsequent bass duties in the band were then handled by David Pajo and ultimately Brad Truax.

In an interview with Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino promoting the 10th anniversary re-release of Turn on the Bright Lights in 2012, the Athens, Georgia-based percussionist recalled his time performing with the erstwhile Interpol bassist. Fogarino told SPIN that he sometimes misses the contributions of the bygone Interpol instrumentalist.

“When we were putting this reissue together, there were moments where I missed Carlos. There was a part of me that took it personally when he left. […] But I still love him. I miss the times when we were a unit together.”
