The British Parliament launched a TikTok account in July 2022, but deleted it within days after lawmakers protested about the app's links to China.

  • The UK Parliament deleted its TikTok account after lawmakers protested.
  • Internal communications obtained by Insider reveal that it expected it would be controversial.
  • It suggested security chiefs confirmed the app was safe — but won't confirm whether this was done.

Britain's Parliament anticipated its use of TikTok could be "controversial" because of the app's links to China and prepared a plan to defend itself against any blowback, internal documents have revealed.

The legislative body abandoned a pilot using the video app after only a few days, following a letter from a group of lawmakers saying TikTok had been "unable to reassure MPs that the company could prevent data transfer to ByteDance, should the parent company make a request for it."

An internal document, obtained by Insider under the UK's Freedom of Information Act, reveals Parliament anticipated TikTok's links to China could result in a hostile reaction.

The document specifically suggested asking the Parliamentary Security Department, or the PSD, whether the app was safe for parliamentary staffers' phones. "Once confirmed, this should be part of any media line," the document said.

But when Insider asked whether the PSD had concluded it was safe, Parliament declined to answer, saying: "We cannot go into any further detail about security measures taken."

The document Insider obtained — an "OASIS Communications and Evaluation Plan" — proposes other potential lines spokespeople can give to journalists.

These include: "That we use social media to reach audiences where they are; that a notably different demographic uses TikTok compared to our followers on other platforms; we are using TikTok as part of a limited pilot project, with a discrete project plan and evaluation."

The document notes that TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has links to China and adds that "Chinese tech companies have been the subject of recent controversy," specifically citing Huawei, the telecommunications company whose hardware the UK banned from its 5G network over security fears.

ByteDance has its headquarters in Beijing, but is domiciled in the Cayman Islands.

It has repeatedly denied it would hand user data to Chinese authorities.

A TikTok spokesperson told Insider: "The TikTok platform does not operate in China and we have never provided user data to the Chinese government.

"UK politicians and government departments use TikTok to reach millions of people in an engaging and creative way."

They added that TikTok would "welcome the opportunity to talk directly" to the politicians who signed the letter "to clarify the factual inaccuracies."

The documents Insider obtained show Parliament first considered launching a TikTok account in April 2021, more than a year before it established the account.

In August 2021, Parliament staff met TikTok staff and subsequently asked if the @UKParliament handle, which had been obtained by another user but had not been used, could be given to them, which it was.

A 13-page PowerPoint document was presented to staff on February 21, 2022, showing examples of other institutions that use TikTok for public outreach.

Internal discussions within Parliament continued until March 2022, when the project picked up the pace. One staff member emailed asking "to make sure it is a development that you would be happy with from a security perspective."

The emails appear to show security advice was offered, but redacted before being released to Insider. On March 30, one staff member wrote: "TikTok is GO!!! (nearly)."

Parliament launched the account on July 28.

In their letter, the lawmakers wrote they were "surprised and disappointed" and that the account should be closed "until credible assurances can be given that no data whatsoever can be transferred to China."

It sparked a flurry of emails within Parliament and by August 1, parliamentary authorities had decided to close the account.

On August 3, the speakers of both houses of Parliament wrote a joint letter to one of the lawmakers who protested, saying this was "in light of your feedback and concerns expressed."

Maradona feeling 'well' after brief hospitalization with internal bleeding https://briefnews.eu/maradona-feeling-well-after-brief-hospitalization-with-internal-bleeding/ https://briefnews.eu/maradona-feeling-well-after-brief-hospitalization-with-internal-bleeding/#respond Sat, 05 Jan 2019 04:25:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/maradona-feeling-well-after-brief-hospitalization-with-internal-bleeding/

Football icon Diego Maradona has been discharged from hospital in Buenos Aires, where he was admitted earlier on Friday with internal bleeding. The 58-year-old all-time-great underwent several checks, his lawyer said.

The news of Maradona’s stint in hospital has sparked concerns among fans for the Argentine football legend, known for his extravagant lifestyle and fragile health.

Maradona was released the same day later after undergoing some tests, that reportedly included endoscopy.

Maradona’s daughter, Dalma, tweeted that her father was doing okay and “is going home soon.”

“For those who were really worried about my dad I can tell you that he is well,” she wrote.

Reuters reported, citing a source, that Maradona’s health predicament was not serious and posed no danger to the World Cup winner’s life.

Maradona was holidaying in Argentina and was scheduled to arrive in Mexico by Saturday, where he has been coaching second division Mexican team Dorados de Sinaloa since 2018. It was expected that Maradona would appear at the first game of his side this season on Saturday.

The worrying news came shortly after Maradona’s agent Matias Morla confirmed that the legendary midfielder would coach the team for a second season.

Health problems have been plaguing Maradona since he retired in 1997. During a dramatic World Cup match between Argentina and Nigeria in Russia, this June, Maradona felt unwell and was assisted from his seat and treated for low blood pressure.

Maradona then assured fans that he was merely suffering from a bad neck.

In 2000, Maradona suffered a heart attack due to a cocaine overdose, and another one in 2004.

In 2007, he checked in at a rehabilitation clinic struggling with alcohol abuse.

A member of the UK parliament who recently ordered the seizure of a cache of internal Facebook documents has shown no signs of backing down.

Meanwhile, a California county judge is irked that documents that he ordered kept secret under a protective order have now been shared abroad.

The years-long legal dispute between Facebook and the tiny app company Six4Three has now intersected with an ongoing British investigation into Facebook’s privacy practices—resulting in a strange twist.

UK Parliament seizes internal Facebook documents https://briefnews.eu/uk-parliament-seizes-internal-facebook-documents/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-parliament-seizes-internal-facebook-documents/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 02:58:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-parliament-seizes-internal-facebook-documents/

The UK Parliament is determined to get to the bottom of Facebook’s data privacy practices, whether or not Mark Zuckerberg is willing to testify. Digital Culture, Media and Sport committee (DCMS) chairman Damian Collins used an uncommon process to force the founder of software developer Six4Three to hand over internal Facebook documents while he was on a business trip to London. The files reportedly include details of Facebook data decisions that enabled the Cambridge Analytica scandal, including emails between executives and conversations with Zuckerberg.

Six4Three had taken action against Facebook after claiming the site was aware of the potential consequences of its privacy policies and intentionally drawing attention to the loophole that Cambridge Analytica used to gather information. Facebook has maintained that the assertions “have no merit” and that it intended to fight the assertions in court.

The files are already subject to an order from a California court, which would restrict them from being published in the US. Facebook has already called on the DCMS committee to both avoid reviewing the documents and to bring them back to either Facebook or its legal counsel. However, it’s not certain that Facebook can actually force this since Parliament was acting under its own jurisdiction.

Even if that doesn’t work, things don’t look great for Facebook. While Zuckerberg won’t be testifying in front of an international committee on November 27th, policy VP Richard Allan will — and they may have tougher questions if they learn anything from the seized documents.

‘Don’t hold US-Russia ties hostage to internal politics’: 5 takeaways from Putin’s Fox interview https://briefnews.eu/dont-hold-us-russia-ties-hostage-to-internal-politics-5-takeaways-from-putins-fox-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-hold-us-russia-ties-hostage-to-internal-politics-5-takeaways-from-putins-fox-interview/#respond Tue, 17 Jul 2018 01:52:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-hold-us-russia-ties-hostage-to-internal-politics-5-takeaways-from-putins-fox-interview/ US media have blasted President Donald Trump for not properly confronting Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Helsinki summit. In an exclusive interview, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace tried to do just that.

Wallace’s one-on-one interview with Putin was recorded immediately following the Helsinki summit and aired during the Bret Baier Special Report on Monday evening. Doing what many lawmakers and media figures in the US said Trump should have done at the summit, Wallace asked Putin if Russia had interfered in the 2016 US presidential election.

The Russian state did not do anything of the sort, Putin said, wondering if Americans really believed that someone from Russia could influence their opinions and the presidential election. He then turned the tables on Wallace, asking if there was anything untrue in what the documents from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) computers and the email account of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair John Podesta, had revealed.

“As far as I recall, the entire [Democratic] party leadership resigned and admitted to these manipulations” in favor of Clinton and against Bernie Sanders, Putin said. “Every single grain of it is true.”

Mueller’s indictment of ‘GRU agents’

Wallace presented Putin with the 29-page indictment of a dozen Russians, said to be military intelligence agents, issued by Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday. Without touching the document, Putin asked the anchor to leave it on the side of the table.

Why would Mueller issue the indictment just three days before the summit, asked Wallace.

“I’m not in the least bit interested,” answered Putin. “Those are internal political games of the US. Don’t hold the relationship between Russia and the US hostage to this internal political struggle. It’s quite clear to me that this is used in the internal political struggle. And it’s nothing to be proud of for American democracy, because using law enforcement agencies in a political rivalry is inadmissible.”

Putin pointed out that Mueller’s previous indictment, against 13 Russians and a catering company, was being contested in a US court, which “has not discovered any trace of interference whatsoever.”

Furthermore, he brought up the 1999 treaty on law enforcement cooperation between the US and Russia, under which Mueller could arrange to have the 12 questioned in Russia, with the presence of his prosecutors.

“Why wouldn’t Special Counsel Mueller send us an official request within the framework of this agreement?” Putin asked. “No one has sent us a letter or a request. I’m puzzled why.”

Kompromat on Trump

Wallace also voiced the question that was on the lips of all mainstream US media on Monday: Was Trump so reluctant to criticize Putin because Russia had some sort of dirt on him?

Presidents have better things to do than fly all the way to Helsinki just to trade insults, Putin pointed out. “We met to try and find a way to improve our relationship,” he said.

He also laughed off the idea of Russia having any compromising material on Trump.

“We don’t have anything on him. There can’t be anything on him. I don’t want to insult President Trump by saying this, and this may come off as rude, but before he announced he would run for presidency, he was of no interest to us.”

While Trump was a billionaire, there are plenty of wealthy people in the US, and it never occurred to anyone he might run for political office, the Russian president added. At the most recent International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, there were 500 business leaders, many of greater caliber than Trump was before he became president, Putin pointed out.

“Do you think our special services organized surveillance of each and every one of them? Unlike the US, we don’t do that. We don’t have the resources, the manpower, to organize a total state of control,” Putin said. “It’s clear we did nothing of the kind against Mr. Trump.”

NATO and military exercises

If NATO were to extend membership invitations to Ukraine or Georgia, how will Russia respond, asked Wallace.

“Negatively,” Putin replied, explaining that NATO expansion on the Russian border is “a direct and immediate threat to our national security.”

Yet the matter of NATO canceling its major military exercises in Eastern Europe, the way Trump did in a gesture of goodwill to North Korea in June, was never brought up at the summit, Putin said.

What happened to you?

Wallace reminded Putin that he had been elected as a democrat and a reformer back in 2000, asking, “What happened?”

“Nothing changed about me. I am the same as I always was,” Putin replied, adding that  Russia has had to react to a change in behavior by the West, from the NATO expansion eastward and the US withdrawal from the anti-ballistic missile (ABM) treaty, the 1999 NATO attack on Yugoslavia, the Magnitsky Act expanding US laws beyond its borders, and the 2014 coup in Ukraine.

“It wasn’t us who organized a military coup. It wasn’t us giving out cookies on city squares,” Putin said. “Nothing happened to me. What happened to the West, I’d like to know.”

A good start

Asked if the summit was a turning point in Western efforts to isolate Russia, Putin said that such efforts had already failed. Between Russia’s sheer size and contribution to the global energy market, it is “too big to be isolated,” he added.

The West and Russia should stop fighting one another and look for ways to address common challenges.

“We did make a good start today,” Putin said.

Fans have been finding themselves unable to play videos on YouTube, on both normal content and their own channels.

Instead of clicking through to the content they want, users have been seeing YouTube Internal 500 Error messages instead.

These appear with a line of code and a purple monkey holding a hammer.

“Sorry something went wrong,” a message from YouTube reads.

“A team of highly trained monkeys are has been dispatched to deal with the situation.

“If you see them, send them this information as text (screenshots frighten them).”

The Google-owned company have not revealed what issues are causing problems for the YouTube servers tonight.

Fans are reporting that they are seeing the message periodically, meaning that it isn’t quite a full outage.

“I Can access other channels now but not my own. Still internal error,” one user wrote online.

YouTube have confirmed that there are problems with user channels tonight, writing on Twitter: “We’ve seen multiple reports from users that they are not able to access channels.

“We’re working to fix this issue.”

No ETA has been provided on when core YouTube services will be back to normal, although users will be hoping for a quick turnaround.

‘Jessica Jones’ Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg on the Internal Struggles and New Foes of Season 2 [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/jessica-jones-showrunner-melissa-rosenberg-on-the-internal-struggles-and-new-foes-of-season-2-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/jessica-jones-showrunner-melissa-rosenberg-on-the-internal-struggles-and-new-foes-of-season-2-interview/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 10:58:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jessica-jones-showrunner-melissa-rosenberg-on-the-internal-struggles-and-new-foes-of-season-2-interview/ jessica jones season 2 krysten ritter

Jessica Jones is back. After defeating Kilgrave by outsmarting his mind control and teaming up with The Defenders, Jessica (Krysten Ritter) is back in the city and taking P.I. cases. The notoriety of her previous exploits brings in new customers, but also customers who expect her to use her super strength for petty revenge.

Meanwhile, Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) tries to investigate Jessica’s medical history and Jeri Hogarth (Carrie Anne Moss) needs Jessica’s help to fight for her law firm. Pretty soon, Jessica encounters Alisa Jones (Janet McTeer), whose strength surpasses her own.

/Film spoke with Jessica Jones creator and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg by phone this week. Our conversation contains some mild spoilers for the beginning of the season, but season 2 is now streaming on Netflix and ready for you to binge before or after you read our interview.

Kilgrave had a power that Jessica’s strength alone couldn’t beat. For season two, did you want to deal with a villain who could challenge her on her physical strength?

What we wanted to do, facing season two, the bar had been set fairly high for season one. We didn’t want to repeat ourselves because we weren’t going to top Kilgrave, as played by David Tennant. So we really just took a very different approach this time. The conflict comes from a different place. It’s both internal and external, the external triggering a lot of internal strife for Jessica and the rest of our characters.

Is it significant that Jessica is facing a female villain?

The fact that she’s female is not significant in that regard. The character that Janet plays is going to really shake Jessica to her core as we go along. It’s this build leading to some much more complicated things as we move forward.

Is this the first time in Jessica’s life since discovering these powers that she’s faced someone that she couldn’t best?

Physically? As an opponent, yeah, definitely. Luke Cage was physically stronger but generally he was an ally. This is physically a stronger person.

The season begins with Jessica wanting people to use her power for violence. Does that continue as a moral struggle she has to deal with now that people know what she’s capable of?

The struggle is really about her wrestling with her own questions of who am I? Am I the killer that Kilgrave turned me into? Am I a hero? What does all this mean? She’s really avoided that for as long as possible. She’s trying to get through every day and not look too deep. Because Trish has stirred the snake pit, she’s now having to face some of those questions. It’s an interesting time for her.

I loved your play on “with great power comes great responsibility.”

Oh, one of my favorite lines.

Did you check with Stan Lee on that?

Well, I would’ve had to go back to the French philosopher Voltaire, then Churchill and Roosevelt and so on. But knowing what that line plays as in our universe. It was, to me, just perfect for the character.

Pam is suing Jeri for harassment. Did you have that story idea long before the #MeToo movement started late last year?

Well, the entire season was written and produced and in the can by the time the #MeToo movement began. I just love that moment for Jeri Hogarth where she’s giving this impassioned feminist speech and two seconds later she’s going, “Oh, she asked for it. Did you see what she was wearing?” It was so classic Hogarth to be one thing on the surface and another thing. It’s very much her character.

Will Pam be back eventually?

I don’t think so. Jeri’s moved on. She’s got other issues she’s dealing with.

Which I won’t spoil just yet. In movies they don’t really have much time to explore the psychology of their characters, even for Tony Stark, one of the movies’ most complicated ones. Do the 13 episodes give you a lot more time to explore Jessica and the people around her?

Absolutely. That’s what I love about working in television. You really get to dive into characters and their inner workings. This season, we have the wonderful opportunity to explore even more our ensemble characters, the people around Jessica. Not only do we get to go into some interesting territory with her, we also push Trish and Malcolm and Hogarth into some really interesting, edgy places.

Jessica is super picky and won’t take bad cases. Is the P.I. part of her business still strong and important?

Yeah, absolutely. She begins the season not wanting to take cases in which she’s going to get emotionally involved. And that’s a lot of them, so she is being very picky when we first start out. But then she’s forced to really take on this. There’s a monster that’s out there and it gets very personal.

Is the banter a challenge to make sure Jessica has a clever answer for everyone?

That’s the fun part. You get to say all that stuff that you never think of in real life. Here you can sit back and go, “What would I say?” For those of us who get to write for her, it’s wish fulfillment. That’s the funnest part.

Were the Whizzer visual effects something you couldn’t have done in season one?

We could’ve done them. It just wasn’t time for that character until we started season two and found his character from Marvel, discovered and fit very much into the storyline we’re telling. They actually said, “Oh, there’s this character called The Whizzer.” I was like oh, done. That’s done. We know how to use that guy.

Are there more characters in season two that take advantage of visual effects?

There’s definitely some visual effects coming up. For us, action sequences, fight sequences are not interesting to me unless they tell a story. It’s the story of those fights and those action sequences that are the richest to me. We have several of those coming up that are super fun.

You have all female directors and 50% female writers. Was that a discussion with Netflix where you prevailed on how important that was?

It was actually Netflix who brought it to me. I started this season by just wanting to make sure we had a real balance of 50/50 men and women and people of color. We just starting booking directors and finding a deep batch of very talented, very experienced female directors with a long list of sexy credits. It just grew from there of finding more. It was Netflix who was very encouraging. Why not?

Frances McDormand made waves saying “inclusion rider” at the Oscars. Have you ever had one on your shows?

I haven’t had it. Would welcome it if they wanted but we’re very inclusive. We don’t need a rider to tell us to be inclusive. We sort of figured it out. There are probably some shows or show runners or studios that do need to be told that. We’re not one of them. Netflix and Marvel are not.

Are you thinking about season three or other projects you want to do in-between?

Oh, I’m just going to get past this exciting premiere and the door is open. I’m hoping to find something as meaty to sink my teeth into.
