Laura Crossen has been named as the interim replacement for former Bed Bath & Beyond Chief Financial Officer Gustavo Arnal.
Arnal was found dead last Friday after he fell from a New York City building. Arnal and activist investor Ryan Cohen had recently been hit with a lawsuit alleging that they worked together in a "pump and dump" fraud scheme.
In a recent Securities Exchange Commission filing, Bed Bath & Beyond named Crossen as its "Interim Chief Financial Officer." The filing said that she previously worked as the company's senior vice president of finance and chief accounting officer.
"As Interim Chief Financial Officer Ms. Crossen will be the Company's principal financial officer on an interim basis and will continue as the Company's principal accounting officer," the company's representatives wrote in the filing. Interim CEO Sue Gove signed the document.
Crossen will receive a base salary increase of $ 200,000, according to the filing. The executive's LinkedIn illustrates her long tenure in several prominent retail companies. Her profile lists her as having served as a vice president of financial management for the company since January 2001. Before she joined the Bed Bath & Beyond team, Crossen worked as the senior vice president of finance at dELIA's from 1998 and 2001. Prior to that, she was a national retail and consumer products group manager with Ernst & Young from 1991 and 1998.

Katie Couric is reportedly ringing in as Jeopardy!‘s latest guest host.
According to the L.A. Times, the former network news giant will take the interim hosting reins for one week, succeeding the late Alex Trebek, whose final episode airs Friday, Jan. 8. A Jeopardy! spokesperson declined to confirm the Couric news.
Couric’s week-long stint will presumably follow that of fellow interim guest host Ken Jennings, who is set to take center stage on Monday, Jan. 11. Jennings, of course, has been mired in numerous controversies of late involving, among other things, his “unartful and insensitive” Twitter history.
Jennings’ ascension to guest host was foreshadowed last September when he joined the iconic game show as a consulting producer. In that new role, he presented his own special video categories, developed projects, assisted with contestant outreach, and served as a general ambassador for the show.
Trebek, who died on Nov. 8 after a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, kicked off his final week of shows on Monday by delivering a posthumous plea to viewers about the importance of showing love and compassion to those individuals impacted by COVID-19.
“This is the season of giving,” Trebek said at the top of Monday’s episode (watch video here). “I know you want to be generous with your family, your friends, your loved ones. But today I’d like you to go one step further. I’d like you to open up your hands and open up your heart to those who are still suffering because of COVID-19 — people who are suffering through no fault of their own. We’re trying to build a gentler, kinder society. If we all pitch in just a little bit, we’re gonna get there.”

Peter Chiarelli has been fired as general manager of the Edmonton Oilers and replaced on an interim basis by Keith Gretzky, who was previously Chiarelli's assistant.
Bob Nicholson, CEO and vice-chair of Oilers Entertainment Group, said at Tuesday's news conference that the decision to cut Chiarelli loose was made prior to Tuesday night's 3-2 loss — Edmonton's third in a row on home ice — to the last-place Detroit Red Wings.
Edmonton's ninth defeat in the past 11 at Rogers Place pushed the team three points out of playoff position. Sure, the Oilers are only three points behind Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the NHL's Western Conference but there are three teams ahead of them in Vancouver, Anaheim and Arizona.
"We're not going to outskill anyone. We're a team that needs to find a way to win games 2-1, 3-2," captain Connor McDavid told reporters on Monday.
Chiareilli, who departs with one season left on his five-year contract, arrived in Edmonton in August 2015 after guiding the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. But he didn't witness a drastic improvement in play during his tenure as the Oilers missed the post-season twice in his first three seasons.
They lost in the second round in 2017 following a 47-win, 103-point regular season.

In late November, he fired head coach Todd McLellan during a 1-6-0 slide and brought in Ken Hitchcock. Following an initial 8-2-1 surge, Edmonton has faded in recent weeks.
Chiarelli, a native of Nepean, Ont., guided the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 2011.
A series of moves by Chiarelli didn't complement a top-heavy roster, led by Leon Draisaitl and fellow centre McDavid.

"I'm certainly not absolving myself of any responsibility on the player personnel [side]," Chiarelli said in November. "This is a collective thing and it's our job to get to the playoffs. We owe it to our fans."
Hitchcock inherited an Oilers outfit that has scored fewer goals than it has allowed (57-66) and is having its troubles on special teams as the power play ranks 15th (20.6 per cent success rate) in the 31-team NHL while the penalty kill is 27th (74.2 per cent).
WATCH | Oilers even having problems with their Zamboni:
Edmonton has either slipped or improved slightly in those areas, with a minus-18 goal differential while sitting 11th of 31 clubs on the power play (21.1 per cent) and 25th on the penalty kill (77.3 per cent) through Tuesday.
Also, pending unrestricted free-agent goalie Cam Talbot has lost his starting job to Mikko Koskinen, whom Chiarelli was allowed to re-sign to a three-year, $ 13.5 million US deal less than 36 hours before he was fired.
Koskinen, a 30-year-old with four games of NHL experience in 2010-11 prior to this season, will have an average salary cap hit of $ 4.5 million, or nearly double his current one year hit of $ 2.5 million.

Solskjaer will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.
“Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role.
“I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” said Solskjaer on the club website.

The 55-year-old from Toronto will now lead the organization on an interim basis as chief executive officer.
Chris Overholt is stepping down after seven years as CEO, an abrupt departure, CBC Sports has learned, with staff being notified of his departure only hours ahead of the distribution of the news release.
He has accepted a leadership role with another organization, the COC said Wednesday in a statement, and that organization is expected to make its own announcement soon.

Chris Overholt is stepping down as CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee. Under Overholt, Canada posted its best medal total at a Winter Olympics in February with 29 medals and matched the country's best performance at a non-boycotted Games with 22 medals in 2016. (Frank Gunn/Canadian Press/File)
Brudner spent almost 18 years working for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, eventually rising to the position of executive vice-president and general counsel.
She was the first female general counsel in the NBA and often the only woman in the boardroom while MLSE built its massive sports empire.
Brudner was the MLSE representative in the 2011 sale of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan's majority ownership share in MLSE to Bell and Rogers, which was a $ 1.32-billion transaction.
But the COC asked her to do work she had never done before in the aftermath of president Marcel Aubut's resignation in October 2015.
He was accused of sexual harassment by several women, but did not face criminal charges and apologized in a written statement.
The hiring of a corporate secretary, Brudner, was one of several moves the COC made following a scathing independent review of the organization following Aubut's departure.
A report said senior executives knew about, and did not do enough, about harassment in the organization.
"I was hired to make recommendations to improve the governance of the COC," Brudner told The Canadian Press.
"In terms of significant changes, they would have occurred in the first year, but then you have to repeat them and you have to make sure they're ingrained in the culture.
"When I spoke to staff, I said it wasn't about bylaw change, it was about culture change."
Instituting term limits for board members was one change Brudner led at the COC, but clearly defining roles was her priority.
"The key thing was to separate proper board work from operations," she explained.
"People on staff know they have the authority and autonomy to operate the business. Because of that, people have become more empowered and they understand they are trusted to make these decisions.
"I think they trust the leadership that much more. They know it's a culture of more inclusivity, a culture of collaboration, a culture of growing the trust within the organization.
"These things really make a difference on a day-to-day basis."
Brudner has yet to decide if she'll put her name forth as a candidate for the CEO position going forward.
"The permanent position is one I will think about once we transition," Brudner said. "It's too big an opportunity for me to make that decision without really giving it consideration."
Former rower Tricia Smith was the COC vice-president who replaced Aubut. The COC is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic Games, as well as the Pan American Games.
"We went through a succession planning discipline several months ago, and in that process, Robin Brudner was identified as the most qualified and capable person to assume the CEO position should it become vacant," Smith said in the COC's statement.
"Our board reaffirmed that decision by voting unanimously to name her interim CEO and secretary general while we conduct a thorough search to permanently fill the position."
In June, the COC unanimously approved Calgary as a potential host of the 2026 Winter Games, should the city decide to go ahead with a bid.
"The bid is a huge priority for us and that will be part of the transition discussions I have with Chris," Brudner said.
Under Overholt, Canada posted its best medal total at a Winter Olympics in February with 29 medals, including 11 gold.
Canada's 22 medals, including four gold, at the 2016 Summer Games equalled the country's best performance at a non-boycotted Games.
During his tenure, the COC also instituted the Game Plan program that helps athletes transition from their competitive careers into the professional realm.
"I have had the great pleasure of knowing Robin Brudner for more than 20 years, working alongside her both at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and with the Canadian Olympic Committee," Overholt said.
"She has been one of the most highly-respected and trusted executives in the Canadian sports industry for many years, playing key roles typically behind the scenes on virtually every matter that a sports organization can encounter.
"She has the unique perspective of knowing the inner workings of the office of the CEO, and of our board of directors, and that knowledge will serve her well."
Brudner has a law degree, but says sports and entertainment was always her professional ambition. Her first job in sports was a six-month contract with the then-expansion Toronto Raptors in 1995.
"I have been an Olympic junkie for as long as I can remember," she said.
"When I was a kid I would have loved to be an Olympian and to have this opportunity so many years later, to be part of the Olympic movement and to be here is pretty close to a dream come true from a professional standpoint."

The Chris Hardwick fallout continues: Yvette Nicole Brown will temporarily replace Hardwick as host of AMC’s popular Talking Dead post-show when it returns next month, our sister site Variety is reporting.
“Yvette Nicole Brown will step in as an interim guest host of The Walking Dead Season 9 Preview Special on August 5 and Talking Dead when it returns following the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead on August 12,” the network said in a statement, “as we work to complete our assessment related to Chris Hardwick.”
Jen MacLean, a 25-year veteran of the video game industry, is the new interim executive director for the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), the world’s largest nonprofit group serving game developers. MacLean has already been serving as managing director for the association’s charitable arm, the IGDA Foundation, and will continue in that role.
MacLean started as a play tester at MicroProse, which J. W. “Wild Bill” Stealey and Sid Meier founded in 1982. The company made simulation and strategy games, including Civilization. She went on to work on the Games Channel at AOL and was an executive for games at Comcast. She was CEO of 38 Studios, the ill-fated venture by baseball star Curt Schilling, who wanted to build a massively multiplayer online role-playing game to compete with World of Warcraft. More recently, she served as the president of StoryArc Media, a kid-focused entertainment company that Jeff Kinney, author of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books and movies, created.
MacLean replaces Kate Edwards, who resigned from the post at the end of June after a five-year stint. Edwards, now at consulting firm Geogrify, took on a lot of controversial issues that included crunch time (or working unpaid overtime) and Gamergate.
The IGDA has more than 8,000 members across 130 chapters around the world. MacLean will serve in the role at least through March 2018. She said that it is easier than ever before to become an independent game developer, but her aim is to enable the IGDA to help more developers realize a fulfilling career in game development. A glut of games exists in the market, and many developers fail to make their games stand out from the crowd. MacLean has been an IGDA member since 2000, and she served on its board of directors for three years. She has run the IGDA Foundation for more than a year, where her goal has been making the games industry more inclusive and diverse. She will report to David Stelzer, chair of the IGDA board and a manager at Epic Games.
I interviewed MacLean about her new role. Here’s an edited transcript of our discussion.
Above: The IGDA is the world’s largest nonprofit group serving game developers.
GamesBeat: So, you’re making it official? You’ll be running the IGDA.
Jen MacLean: I’ve been running the IGDA Foundation for the past year. This is a great way to support both organizations. They have very different but complementary missions. Given my history with the IGDA — I’ve been a volunteer for almost 20 years — this seemed like a natural way to support the organization and support the game development community.
GamesBeat: Are you going to continue your job with the foundation as well?
MacLean: I’ll be working with both of the organizations. I’ll be managing director for the IGDA Foundation and executive director for the IGDA. David Stelzer is the chair of the IGDA, and he’s also on the IGDA Foundation board. The nice thing is that the Foundation board is full of people who are former volunteers or board members with the IGDA. There’s a lot of loyalty and support across the organizations for the mission of both organizations.
GamesBeat: How long have you spent in games?
MacLean: I’ve been in the games industry for 25 years this summer. I started as a play tester at MicroProse. The first game I tested was called Darklands, a role-playing game set in Germany. It was truly ahead of its time. It was so big it came on 10 floppy discs. We had play testing set up in a hallway, so we would pass the discs down from computer to computer, one by one. I got the chance to spend a lot of time with Civilization, and I was the lead tester on Civilization II.
For a 20-year-old kid, having the chance to work with people like Sid Meier and Brian Reynolds was such an amazing experience. I learned so much — not just about game development but about how you should work with people and treat people. We were in Hunt Valley, which is just outside Baltimore.
GamesBeat: How do you describe the job of the executive director? What are your responsibilities?
MacLean: The most important task is to help game developers around the world be successful in their chosen career. Success means different things for different people. For some people, it’s a credit on Grand Theft Auto V. For other people, it’s running a small, stable indie studio. To me, I see my mission and the mission of the IGDA as to give developers the tools and the advocacy and the support they need to achieve that success for themselves, no matter what it is.
Above: Civilization box art.
GamesBeat: What are some of the big issues you have to address or talk about in this role?
MacLean: I’m following Kate Edwards, who was fantastic in her advocacy for game developers. I definitely want to continue the work she started, making sure that game developers have a voice about important issues in the industry. At the same time, I have a different approach because I have a different background.
When I look at the industry today, it’s easier to be a game developer than it ever has been before. There are so many educational opportunities around games. When I think about my college experience, 25 years ago, I would have killed to study game design. At the same time, there’s such a glut of product on the market that it’s really difficult to succeed as a game developer. My position, and the position of the IGDA, is we’re here to help every game developer succeed. I think that education is a big part of that.
As the industry shifts more and more from full-time employment to a contract model, game developers absolutely have to understand and be aware of the implications, not just for their short-term employment but for their long-term physical, financial, and mental health. As game platforms proliferate, developers need to be aware of both the opportunities but also the considerations in developing games for platforms like mixed reality, augmented reality, and virtual reality. The IGDA has to take a leadership role to plan that transition.
I also think that one of the great things we’re seeing about careers in general is there’s a lot of flexibility and fluidity. The IGDA should be enabling people to come into game development from non-traditional paths and enabling people who may have left for a career in tech or elsewhere. We’d love to give them a path back to the industry.
GamesBeat: The IGDA, through Kate, had always met a lot of controversies head-on. How do you yourself address issues that game developers face?
MacLean: [Laughs] I’ve never been considered a shy or retiring person. I’ve faced my share of controversy when I was chair of the IGDA. I came out very strongly on the issue of credits, for example. I posted a strong letter about making sure that all developers who work on a title receive proper credit. Too often, only game developers who are with the company when a title ships get credit, and that’s not fair. I expect to continue that work, and Kate has set a fantastic example there.
I absolutely recognize the contribution of the executive directors before me. I was privileged to work with Kate when I was on the board. Having been on the board, having been chair of the board, I think I have a better sense of what I’m getting into than most people. … To me, I’m the custodian of a noble mission that’s been entrusted to very fortunate people. I’m continuing their work and hopefully, doing it in a way that makes a big impact in the lives of game developers.
