Google used its Tuesday I/O keynote to unveil a pretty killer new feature that may one day come to Google Maps: camera-assisted walking navigation.
“Here’s how it could—will look like,” Google VP Aparna Chennapragada told the I/O crowd when unveiling a sample interface that combines Google Maps’ 2D interface with the view from your smartphone’s camera lens. A small semisphere of map data appeared at the bottom of the interface, while the camera perspective included bold images of where to turn and go—and floating panels that show information about businesses in your direct view.

It’s been possible for a while to control bionic limbs with your brain, but there’s been something missing: kinesthetic feedback, or the nervous system signals that give your limbs a sense of presence. You frequently have to stare at your artificial arm to ensure that you’re grabbing a cup instead of operating on instinct. That elusive quality may soon be a regular staple of prosthetics, however. Researchers have developed a neural interface that generate this feedback and make bionic feel like they’re part of your body.
The trick was to create a two-way interface that vibrating nerves at reinnervation sites (places where amputated nerves have been redirected to remaining muscles), convincing their brain that the limb is really there. Patients in tests could not only perform actions without looking at their prosthetic arms, they could often perform actions as elegantly as someone with natural limbs. And importantly, the prosthetics feel like their limbs, not just electronics strapped to their body.
This feedback isn’t very complex at the moment, and researchers intend to develop subtler signals that more closely replicate what you get from natural arms. However, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be effective — it just has to establish that instinctual link that would otherwise be lost. Amputees could spend less time training themselves to use prosthetics and more time actually using them.

An augmented reality interface is brought to your helmet with the Livemap helmet. It puts GPS, speed and other parameters in front of your face. It also has a built-in camera as well as voice and audio.
Transcript: Livemap puts GPS, speed and other parameters In front of your face. Receiving route information while allowing drivers to be fully focused on the road. Figma, an interface design and prototyping tool that works in the browser, has raised $ 25 million in a series B round of funding from Kleiner Perkins, Greylock, and Index Ventures.
Founded out of San Francisco in 2012, Figma is one of a number of players plying their trades in the UI design and prototyping realm. However, Figma claims a number of notable advantages.
For example, Figma works in the browser and facilitates collaboration between team members who are working on the same app or website design. Moreover, you don’t have to upload or download files, this is all in real time, with all edits made visible to collaborators instantly and a messaging facility available for discussion. In short, it’s kind of like Google Docs for designing, prototyping, and collaborating around the interface creation process.
Above: Figma: Discussing mobile app design project
Much like other UI design tools, Figma also offers accompanying “mirror” apps for smartphones so you can see what an app design looks like on a real device. And it also offers desktop apps that bring some offline functionality to the mix.
Figma launched in preview back in 2015, though it didn’t launch fully to the public until the following year. Prior to now, the company had raised around $ 18 million in funding from such notable names as Greylock, Index, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, and computer scientist DJ Patil. And with another $ 25 million in the bank, the company said it plans to double down on its efforts in the enterprise.
Competitors in the space includes the mighty Adobe, which launched its Adobe XD prototyping and wireframing tool in October after 18 months in beta, though it still only works on macOS 10.11/Windows 10 Anniversary and later. Adobe XD is still in its relative infancy, but given the company’s existing footprint and reputation in the design realm, it will clearly be a major competitor to the likes of Figma. Elsewhere, New York-based InVision offers similar UI prototyping smarts, though you have to create the mockups and wireframes using a separate design tool, while Dutch startup Bohemian Coding offers the popular Mac-only app Sketch.
Clearly, there is a big demand in the designer world for such tools, as InVision raised $ 100 million a few months back, taking its total funding to more than $ 230 million since its inception in 2011. Shortly after, Netherlands-based Framer secured $ 7.7 million for its visual design prototyping tool.
Figma claims some big-name customers, including Microsoft, Uber, and Slack. Indeed, Kleiner Perkins, which led on Figma’s latest funding round, is also one of Slack’s backers. Mamoon Hamid, general partner at Kleiner Perkins, sees some similarities between the two companies.
“Figma makes the design process more open and collaborative so teams can develop and bring new products to market faster,” said Hamid. “In many respects, Figma’s traction and potential remind me of Slack at this stage.”
Figma represents Hamid’s inaugural investment since he joined Kleiner Perkins back in August.
Bayer
Major tech companies are eyeing the healthcare world. And the pharmaceutical industry is starting to take note.
“The true disruption of the next five to 10 years will come at the interface of tech and biotech,” Axel Bouchon, head of Leaps by Bayer, told Business Insider.
“The potential of how biophysical data could be combined with data management will revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry and all of life sciences,” he said. “And interestingly, nobody on the tech side nor on our side has the solution.”
Leaps by Bayer is an organization within the life sciences and pharmaceutical company that’s focused on finding and funding what Bouchon described as “fundamental breakthroughs that really change and cure.”
Carsten Brunn, head of pharmaceuticals in the Americas at Bayer, told Business Insider he’s already started seeing the influence of technology in his work. For example, machine learning is helping companies better pinpoint which leaders within healthcare they might want to work with on a particular disease area or product launch.
Ultimately, Bouchon hopes, this intersection of biotech and tech will benefit patients.
“What I would dream of is, if there’s a cancer patient entering a clinic, he or she should have data on hand for him or herself. Believe me this is hardly possible,” Bouchon said. Right now, there is a lot of data out there collected about patients that could potentially help. The problem is, that information isn’t exactly the easiest to use.
For now, though, something’s still missing that’s keeping the healthcare world from being disrupted.
“I believe that someone will just realize that both sides miss fundamental expertise,” Bouchon said. To fix that, it likely won’t be a case of just bringing the two industries together — it’ll take a new group of people that’s able to think differently, he said.

BI Intelligence
This is a preview of a research report from BI Intelligence, Business Insider’s premium research service. Click here to learn more.
A revolution in payments and banking is beginning as virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa gain the abilities of cashiers, personal shoppers, and bank tellers.
Already, Siri can help users make peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers with Venmo, Alexa can pay off Capital One credit card bills, and Google Assistant can let users shop with their voice from nearby stores.
This is just the beginning. Today, 18 million US consumers have made a voice payment, and BI Intelligence projects that figure will quadruple over the next five years.
In a new report, BI Intelligence explores how and why financial services providers such as PayPal and Bank of America are positioning for voice interfaces to take off. The report includes actionable recommendations that draw on interviews with executives spearheading voice initiatives, as well as exclusive survey data from our proprietary research panel.
Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:

GUEST:
During Apple’s fourth-quarter earnings call with analysts, CEO Tim Cook said, “AR is going to change everything.” He wasn’t exaggerating.
Augmented reality (AR) is shaping an entirely new paradigm for mass technology use. We’ve quickly evolved from typing on our PC keyboards, to the point-and-click of the mouse, to the smartphone’s tap or swipe, to simply asking Alexa or Siri to do things for us. Now AR brings us to the age of holographic computing. Along with animojies and Pokémon and face filters, a fresh and futuristic user interface is emerging.
Holographic computing is coming to us now through our phone screens instead of via lasers, which are required for textbook holography. As a result, we’re now seeing a real surge in the use of hologram-like 3D that will completely change how we interact with the world — and each other.
The evidence of this coming shift is everywhere. Apple’s iOS11 puts AR into the hands of over 400 million consumers. The new iPhone X is purposely designed to deliver enhanced AR experiences with 3D cameras and “Bionic” processors. Google recently launched the Poly platform for finding and distributing virtual and augmented reality objects. Amazon has released Sumerian for creating realistic virtual environments in the cloud. We’re also seeing an AR-native content creation movement and a steady stream of AR features coming from Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and scads of other tech players.
The captivating user experiences of 3D are obviously attractive for gaming and entertainment, but they’re capable of so much more. And as familiarity with the holographic experience spreads through popular games and filters, this new interface will begin to dominate other functions that are well-suited to its charms.
Already, it’s making inroads in these two areas:
Training – Holography is useful for virtual hands-on guidance to explain a process, complete a form, or orient a user. It also can simulate real-life scenarios such as emergency response, sales interactions, etc. AR enhancements can be overlaid for greater depth and variety in information presentation, such as floating text bubbles to provide detail about a particular physical object, chronological procedure mapping for performing a task, or virtual arrows pointing to the correct button to push on a console.
There’s less need to travel to a classroom if you can launch interactive, immersive 3D presentations on any desk, wall, or floor and “experience” them through the screen in your hand. And unlike standard video, holographic interfaces add an extra experiential element to the training process. As a result, users can more readily contextualize what they are learning.
Customer experience – Consumers are using AR and holographic computing for self-selection, self-service, and self-help. Soon they’ll be using it for even more. For example, IKEA’s AR app lets you point your phone at your dining room to see how a new table will look in the space. Why not just point your phone at the shipping box to be holographically guided through the assembly process when it’s delivered? Holographic computing will also emerge as the preferred means of getting product information and interacting with service agents. Walkthroughs of hotel rooms and vacation destinations with a 3D virtual tour guide/travel planner/salesperson are not too far in the future.
Many other appealing use cases exist, of course. And as this new user interface matures, it will be preferable and will quickly become second nature.
The sheer amount of money being thrown at speedy development by a number of different players shows it’s not yet clear who will define the ultimate holographic interface. Will it remain phone-based? Involve glasses? Shift to desktop? Evolve beyond our current hardware with on-eye projection technology? All of the above? Who can say?
One thing we do know is that significant brain trust is being invested by companies of all types to leverage this emerging technology. And we will see mass adoption and widespread affinity for the holographic interface.

If you’ve been craving TiVo’s interface overhaul ever since it was unveiled last year, you now have an opportunity to try it without buying a brand new device. As of October 29th, you can visit TiVo’s website and request an upgrade to your Bolt, Mini or Roamio set-top box. It’ll take “2-3 hours” before you can force the download, but you don’t have to wait for TiVo to push the new design on its own. Think carefully before you make the leap, though: while the interface is a leap into the modern era, you may lose functionality in the process.
The interface treats streaming content as roughly on par with conventional TV, and introduces a more sophisticated prediction system that surfaces what it believes you’d be likely to watch, including online material. It’s more extensible too. However, Zats Not Funny notes that you lose the Live Guide in favor of a plain grid guide, and you can’t yet upload content from your PC. And when first-run TiVo Minis (the ones that have infrared-only remotes) don’t have a back button, navigating the new interface will be tricky.
All the same, this could be a breath of fresh air if you have a (slightly) older TiVo device. The revamped interface won’t suddenly turn your hardware into a cutting-edge media hub, but it may do enough that you won’t feel as much pressure to get a secondary device to play video from online services.

From the stage at Oculus Connect 4, Oculus’ Nate Mitchell just announced Rift Core 2.0. It’s designed around Touch, offering a motion-control-focused interface that apes a lot of what hackers have been doing with BigScreen. The big addition is Dash, which as its name implies, is a dashboard accessible from within any VR app or experience. It lets you use your desktop apps within VR, too. “It’s a total game changer,” Mitchell said. You can permanently pin something to the dashboard, too. “Every application can have its own virtual display,” Mitchell said.
This sounds incredibly ambitious, and like it’s going to take a lot of power to run. Mitchell said that it was made possible thanks to NVIDIA and AMD. As an example of what Dash is capable of, Mitchell said they debugged Dash from within Dash in VR. Yo dawg.
The company also overhauled Home, and you’ll be able to fully customize it to make it feel like, well, home. Couches, works of art, you name it, you can decorate your virtual domicile with it. You can even mount your achievements on the wall, and you’ll launch games by dropping old-school cartridges into a Sega Genesis look-alike. Oh, and you’ll be able to visit your friends’ apartments too. The beta starts this December and will be free to access for everyone with a Rift.
