The Russian military has tested a short-range missile meant to defend Moscow from nuclear Armageddon. Video of the test launch conducted in Kazakhstan was published by the Defense Ministry. The interceptor tested at the Sary-Shagan test range is apparently the replacement of the 53T6 anti-ballistic missiles, which serve as part of an ABM shield protecting the Russian capital. The video released by the ministry on Saturday shows a characteristic transport-launch container of the projectile being loaded from a transport vehicle to a launcher and placed inside a silo before launch. The Moscow anti-missile shield includes several long-range interceptors and dozens of short-range interceptors, which are meant to stop incoming ICBM warheads with aerial nuclear explosions. The 53T6s, however, are approaching expiry date and need replacing. The Russian military decided that the necessary restocking of the silos is a good opportunity to place a more capable rocket into service. Think your friends would be interested? Share this story!
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has launched a high-tech project to develop an interceptor to shoot down enemy hypersonic missiles, the Drive reported.
In September, DARPA displayed concept art of the project, named ‘Glide Breaker’, which depicted features of a hard-kill, kinetic interceptor that is capable of engaging unpowered, high-speed vehicles, the Drive said. The agency’s Tactical Technology Office had previously hosted a gathering to explain the project and its requirements in July 2018, according to the media outlet.
Little information on the project has been made available to the public so far. Back in July, DARPA said that the objective of Glide Breaker will be “to further the capability of the United States to defend against supersonic and the entire class of hypersonic threats.”
It added that the US military is interested in having “component technologies that radically reduce risk for development and integration of an operational, hard-kill system.” If developed, the Glide Breaker would serve as a deterrent creating “large uncertainty for the adversary’s projected probability of mission success and effective raid size.”
However, it is unclear if designing a fully fledged hypersonic interceptor is realistic. The Drive itself notes that knocking down an ultra-fast missile out of the orbit is like trying to “hit one bullet with another bullet.” Hypersonic missiles usually fly at more than five times the speed of sound.
The revelation follows reports of Russia’s successes in developing advanced hypersonic weapons. These first came to light in March of this year, when President Vladimir Putin unveiled an array of futuristic systems during an annual address to lawmakers.
The missiles, some of which are already in service, were said to give Russia an unrivaled deterrent in the future. One was the hypersonic air-launched Kinzhal (Dagger) missile, which is able to travel 10 times faster than the speed of sound.
Another is the Avangard (Vanguard) hypersonic glider, which is still being tested by the military, while the infrastructure – presumably underground silos – is being adjusted to accommodate the device.
News of Russian hypersonic weapons also emerged in Western media earlier this year. In May, CNBC quoted a source aware of US intelligence reports that claimed the Russian military had successfully tested hypersonic weapons twice in 2016.
Months later, the FSB, Russia’s domestic intelligence agency, launched an inquiry over suspicion that classified information on top-class hypersonic projectiles had been leaked to the West. In July, the security service raided two major research and development centers based in and outside of Moscow.

The US State Department announced on Tuesday it had given preliminary approval for Japan to purchase four SM-3 Block 2A missiles manufactured by Raytheon Co and BAE Systems, related hardware equipment, and technological, engineering and logistics services provided by the US government and contractors. The deal will cost Tokyo at least $ 133.3 million, according to US State Department estimates.
“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a major ally” by providing it “with an increased ballistic missile defense capability to assist in defending the Japanese homeland and US personnel stationed there,” it said in a statement.
The deal falls in line with the policy of US President Donald Trump’s administration of reassuring its allies in the region “threatened by the DPRK’s provocative behavior,” a State Department official said, according to Reuters.
North Korea ramped up its missile activity in the vicinity of Japan last year, firing ballistic missiles that repeatedly landed in the Sea of Japan, raising concerns in Tokyo. After its latest ballistic missile test on November 28, Pyongyang claimed that its new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Hwasong-15, is able to strike the whole US mainland. With its launch, North Korea has become “a state nuclear force.”
The Trump administration announcement coincides with much anticipated high-level talks between Seoul and Pyongyang that were held in the Korean demilitarized zone (DMZ) on Tuesday. The landmark negotiations, the first in two years, have led to a series of breakthroughs, with North Korea agreeing to reopen the diplomatic hotline, send a high-ranking delegation of athletes and officials to the upcoming Winter Olympics and hold military talks to reduce hostility between the nations.
While Pyongyang refused to discuss the topic of denuclearization with Seoul, the head of the North Korean delegation at the talks, Ri Son Gwon, told media that all North Korean weapons “including atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs and ballistic missiles” are aimed exclusively at the US and should not be deemed to pose threat to the self-isolated country’s neighbors.
Last month, the Japanese government approved the purchase and deployment of two Aegis Ashore batteries at the cost of some $ 2 billion, including infrastructure, with each unit of the system accounting for at least $ 888 million. The system is expected to be put into operation by 2023. The planned military build-up required the Japan’s Defense Ministry to seek a record-high $ 48 billion military budget for the next fiscal year starting April.
Moscow has criticized Japan’s plans to expand its missile shield with Aegis systems. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warning that the deal could undermine bilateral relations “including negotiations on a peace treaty” that has not been concluded between Russia and Japan since WWII.
The installation of the systems will constitute a violation of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between Moscow and the US, she argued, noting that the US-made ballistic defense systems are equipped with universal launchers that could carry all types of missiles.
Washington, however, brushed off Moscow’s criticism, saying that it in “full compliance” with the agreement while, in turn, accusing Russia of breaching it. Meanwhile, Japan stressed it was not party of the Soviet-American treaty and therefore its actions do not fall under its scope.
It was also reported that Japan is mulling the purchase of long-range cruise missiles for F-35A stealth fighter jets from Norway and is looking into the possibility of buying Lockheed Martin’s JASSM-ER and LRASM missiles with a range of some 900 kilometers (559 miles) to potentially mount them on F-15 fighter jets.

Ford will pay to repair police versions of its Ford Explorer SUVs to correct possible carbon monoxide leaks that may be linked to crashes and injuries after U.S. regulators escalated an investigation into 1.33 million vehicles. Ford said it will cover the costs of specific repairs in every Police Interceptor Explorer SUVs that may be tied to aftermarket installation of police equipment. The company said the modifications may have left holes in the underbody of the vehicles.
“If the holes are not properly sealed, it creates an opening where exhaust could enter the cabin,” Ford said in a statement. Ford acted amid concerns by some police departments about the safety of officers. The city of Austin, Texas said Friday it was removing all 400 of the city’s Ford Explorer SUVs from use.
Several Texas media outlets cited a city memo that said 20 police officers have been found with elevated levels of carbon monoxide and three have not returned to work. Ford said it has not found any elevated levels of carbon monoxide in regular Ford Explorers, but NHTSA is investigating reports of exhaust odors in those vehicles. Ford did not say how much it expected to pay to repair police vehicles and said its investigation is ongoing.
On Thursday, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was upgrading and expanding a probe into 1.33 million Ford Explorer SUVs over reports of exhaust odors in vehicle compartments. Police have reported two crashes that may be linked to carbon monoxide exposure and a third incident involving injuries related to carbon monoxide exposure. The auto safety agency said it was also aware of more than 2,700 complaints that may be linked to exhaust orders and possible exposure to carbon monoxide and 41 injuries among police and civilian vehicles in the probe covering 2011-2017 model year Ford Explorer sport utility vehicles.
Ford has issued four technical service bulletins related to the exhaust odor issue to address complaints from police fleets and other owners, NHTSA and Ford said. NHTSA said it is evaluating preliminary testing that suggests carbon monoxide levels may be elevated in certain driving scenarios. NHTSA said it recently learned that the police version of the Ford Explorer was experiencing exhaust manifold cracks.
The agency said the reported injuries include “loss of consciousness, with the majority indicating nausea, headaches, or light-headedness.” (Reporting by David Shepardson in Washington; Editing by Lisa Shumaker)

The Russian military has successfully tested a short-range ballistic missile interceptor designed to destroy incoming nuclear warheads with a nuclear explosion in the air. These missiles are used in Moscow’s anti-ballistic missile system.
The A-135 ABM system protects Russia’s capital and its surroundings from a possible nuclear missile attack. It consists of phased-array radar, a command center, and launchers that release two types of interceptor missiles, the long-range 51T6 and the short-range 53T6.
On Friday, Russia’s strategic missile forces and air and missile defense forces jointly tested a 53T6 missile at the Sary Shagan test range in Kazakhstan. Of course, the missile, which has been dubbed Gazelle by NATO, didn’t have a nuclear warhead like those in the 68 silos around Moscow.
“During the test, the ABM system interceptor successfully performed its task and hit a provisionary target,” Deputy Commander of the Air and Missile Defense Andrey Prikhodko said.
The video of the test was provided by the Russian Defense Ministry.
The Russian military tests interceptor missiles once or twice a year to confirm their combat readiness.
The 10-meter-long rocket reportedly can deliver a 10-kiloton nuclear tip a distance of up to 80 kilometers at a speed of three kilometers per second.
Russia is currently developing a new interceptor missile that is now approaching a phase that requires intensive test launches, according to Russian military officials. Dubbed the Nudol, most information about the long-range projectile is classified.

A spokesman for the Strategic Force of the Korean People’s Army told KCNA state news agency that the US ballistic missile interceptor test conducted on Tuesday “is just a serious military provocation that brings to light the US imperialists’ wild ambition for igniting a nuclear war.”
He called the interceptor test a “risky act” that indicates US “preparations for unleashing a nuclear war against” North Korea. Such “foolhardy moves” of the US military only prove that North Korea’s “bolstering the nuclear force for self-defense is entirely just,” according to the spokesman.
The US military, however, did not call the target of the test an “an ICBM from North Korea” or even imply it. An unnamed Pentagon official told Stars and Stripes that the test was planned “years in advance” and was not a direct response to recent North Korean ballistic missile tests.
The test was hailed by the Pentagon as an “incredible accomplishment” representing a “critical milestone” for the anti-missile program.
“This test demonstrates that we have a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat,” US Missile Defense Agency chief Vice Admiral James D. Syring said in a statement.
North Korea, however, dismissed the results of the test as a “bluff,” as the ICMB interception system, according to the spokesman, would not prevent the “shower of nuclear strike” from North Korea.
“They are now bluffing, bragging about the ‘success’ in the test and the efficiency of the missile interception system. But the DPRK considers it just as a foolish act of those driven to despair,” the spokesman said. “The last-ditch gambling of the Trump administration for a nuclear war will only bring earlier the day when the US mainland will turn into ashes.”
The ability of Pyongyang to “hit US mainland” at the moment is doubtful, as all of the recently tested ballistic missiles have been short to medium range. The latest missile, launched on May 28, flew 450 kilometers before landing in the Sea of Japan, about 300km off the Japanese coast. In May, Pyongyang announced that it had successfully tested the Pukguksong-2 intermediate range ballistic missile as a projectile was detected landing in international waters off Japan’s east coast.
North Korea, poses a “clear and present danger” to the US, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday, stressing that Pyongyang actions “are manifestly illegal under international law,” as they violate UN Security Council resolutions.
“The current North Korean program signals a clear intent to acquire nuclear-armed ballistic missiles, including those of intercontinental range, that pose direct and immediate threats to our regional allies, partners and all the world,” Mattis said.

The Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) interceptor will be test-fired next Tuesday from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according to Christopher Johnson, spokesman for the US Missile Defense Agency. The target will be a custom-made missile resembling an ICBM, fired from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
“We conduct increasingly complex test scenarios as the program matures and advances,” Johnson said on Friday. “Testing against an ICBM-type threat is the next step in that process.”
If the test goes as planned, the interceptor will destroy the target warhead high above the Pacific Ocean, AP reported.
Kwajalein is approximately 8,000 km (4,972 miles) from Los Angeles, California. The Pentagon classifies any missile with a range greater than 3,400 miles as an ICBM.
Tuesday’s test was planned “years in advance” and is not a direct response to recent North Korean tests of ballistic missiles, a Pentagon official who spoke on condition of anonymity told Stars and Stripes.
The last test of Boeing’s GMD system was in June 2014, when it successfully destroyed a target imitating an intermediate-range ballistic missile. It was the first success after three failures and the program has only recorded nine successful intercepts out of 17 total attempts, according to the military newspaper.
“I can’t imagine what they’re going to say if it fails,” Philip Coyle, senior science fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, told AP. Coyle headed the Pentagon’s office of operational testing and evaluation between 1994 and 2001. He added that the GDM tests are “scripted for success,” which makes the failure rate “astonishing.”
Deployed in 2004 by the Bush administration, the GMD has never been used it combat. There are currently 32 interceptor missiles in Fort Greely, Alaska and four at Vandenberg. Eight more are supposed to come on-line by the end of this year, AP reported.
While North Korea currently lacks the capability to hit the US mainland, a senior military intelligence official warned that such a development is only a matter of time.
“If left on its current trajectory the regime will ultimately succeed in fielding a nuclear-armed missile capable of threatening the United States homeland,” Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), told the Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this week.
“While nearly impossible to predict when this capability will be operational, the North Korean regime is committed and is on a pathway where this capability is inevitable,” Stewart added.

Kylo Ren has things to do and places to be in Star wars VIII, so it’s fitting that he has a fancy new ship.
This is his personal fighter and the latest reports say that it has been custom-made for him.
There is also new information about Snoke’s palace and an intriguing new theory that it may not be on a planet at all, but instaed on an iconic ship.
WARNING: SPOILERS AND LEAKS AHEAD
Kylo’s personal new TIE Interceptor is apparently primarily made for combat and attack purposes. Which is worrying since a major new theory suggests that Kylo Ren will be sent to kill his own mother, Leia.
MakingStarWars.Net is quoting inside sources who say that the key area of his new ship is modelled on an iconic World War II fighter plane, the B-29. This is in keeping with the Star Wars tradition of referencing classic World War II planes, lingo and fighter ranks ever since A New Hope.
The site has a very detailed report on the new ship and also says that Kylo will show his face a lot more in the upcoming movie.
THE LAST JEDI TRAILER: WHEN WILL IT BE STREAMED, HOW CAN YOU WATCH IT?
MakingStarWars.Net said: “His (Kylo Ren’s) new TIE has pointy wings like the TIE Interceptor but with a pill shaped body.
“The cockpit is sort of like an old B-29 bomber compared to the classic TIE cockpit window. The thrusters in the back remind me of the (Millennium) Falcon as they glow blue and sort of evoke the Falcon. The custom ship was supposedly made to his specifications so he could take down the Resistance and I believe we see Kylo fly from the Mega Destroyer in his new ship.”
The Mega Destroyer may also be where another major character will finally be revealed.
MakingStarWars.Net has more exciting details about the staggering scale of the battleship and also suggests that Snoke may have his palace on board. New leaks have described Snoke’s opulent robes and lavish throne room.
The site said: “The Mega Destroyer itself is shaped like a flying wing. It just might be the biggest ship we’ve seen in Star Wars outside of a Death Star. You know how the classic Star Destroyer has three large engines? I think this one has at least ten and they’re double stacked.”
