The United States, France and the United Kingdom launched strikes against targets in Syria on Friday night U.S. time, early morning in Syria. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. General Joseph Dunford, told news media that the strikes hit three targets inside Syria.

The targets included a research facility in the Syrian capital of Damascus alleged to be used in chemical weapons production, a storage facility thought to house chemical weapon stockpiles west of Homs, Syria and a command and control facility outside Homs claimed to also be used for weapons storage.

Saudi Arabia’s air defense forces intercepted a missile over Riyadh on Wednesday, state media reports. Houthi rebels reportedly fired a number of missiles towards a Saudi government building.

The announcement came after three blasts and clouds of smoke were seen in the sky in Riyadh. Snapchat footage taken in Riyadh shows distinctive white and brown clouds of smoke in the sky.

The missile is thought to have been fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen, who a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing since March 2015, when it intervened in support of ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi in an effort to prevent Houthis from maintaining the capital of Sanaa. 

According to Al Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, the missile was aimed at the defense ministry. The Saudi-owned Al Arabiya also reports a Houthi scout drone was intercepted over Abha airport in southern Saudi Arabia, near Najran.

Colonel Turki al-Maliki, the spokesman for the Arab Coalition Forces fighting in Yemen, said that at 7:40 am local time air defense systems detected an object and dealt with it accordingly. After examining the debris, the coalition said it determined it was a Houthi aircraft.

Al Masirah TV also reported the group targeted an Aramco distribution facility in Jizan, in Saudi Arabia.

“The air force announced the execution of air strikes with the Qasef-1 aircraft on Aramco in Jizan,” it said on its Twitter page. The group unveiled the Qasef-1 drone last year.

The Israeli military have “successfully intercepted” two rockets targeting Israel, its defense forces have announced, claiming that the attack was launched from the Gaza Strip.

The rockets were intercepted by the Israeli Air Force, an IDF spokesperson said on Twitter. Media reports said warning sirens went off in several regions in southern Israel close to the Gaza Strip.

Attacks on the city of Sderot, as well as on the Sha’ar HaNegev, Sdot Negev and Hof Ashkelon regional councils have been reportedly prevented.

On Tuesday, Israel said its Air Force targeted a Hamas military compound in the southern Gaza Strip, in response to another alleged rocket attack from that area.

More than 10 missiles have been reportedly fired at Israel in the past few days, since tensions escalated in the area following Washington’s decision to formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions discussed issues related to the Trump campaign with Russia’s ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak, during the 2016 election, current and former US officials told The Washington Post on Friday.

The officials’ assessment was based on communications between Kislyak and Moscow that were intercepted by US spy agencies.

Since it emerged in March that Sessions, a prominent Trump campaign surrogate, had failed to disclose his contacts with the Russian ambassador, he consistently said he did not discuss anything related to the Trump campaign with Kislyak, and that all their conversations took place within the scope of his duties as a US senator.

One US official told The Post Sessions’ statements were “misleading” and “contradicted by other evidence.”

Another official said the intercepted communications between Kislyak and the Kremlin, in which he spoke of two conversations he had with Sessions, indicate that Sessions and Kislyak had “substantive” conversations about the Trump campaign’s platform on matters related to Russia, and how the Trump administration would approach the crumbling US-Russia relationship.

The US Justice Department representative responded to The Post’s report in a Friday evening statement:

“Obviously, I cannot comment on the reliability of what anonymous sources describe in a wholly uncorroborated intelligence intercept that the Washington Post has not seen and that has not been provided to me, but the Attorney General stands by his testimony from just last month before the Senate Intelligence Committee when he specifically addressed this and said that he ‘never met with or had any conversations with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election.'”

The Post’s report contradicts previous statements Sessions has made, at times while under oath.

When he was asked whether he communicated with the Russian government at his January confirmation hearing, Sessions said he was “not aware of any of those activities.”

He added: “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I didn’t have — did not have communications with the Russians, and I’m unable to comment on it.”

After it emerged in March that Sessions had, in fact, had at least two conversations with Kislyak during the campaign, he was forced to recuse himself from any current or future Department of Justice investigations into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.

“I never had meetings with Russian operatives or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign,” Sessions said when he announced his recusal in March.

And when he was asked by the Senate Intelligence Committee in June about his conversations with the Russians, Sessions narrowed his answer and said he had “never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election in the United States.”

The Post’s report comes amid a tumultuous time between Sessions and President Donald Trump.

Trump told The New York Times on Tuesday that he never would have appointed Sessions as attorney general if he’d known Sessions would recuse himself.

“Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job, and I would have picked somebody else,” Trump said.

Sessions said after excerpts of the interview were published that he would remain in his position as long as it were appropriate.

French custom officials at Charles De Gaulle airport have seized almost half a ton of tortoiseshell from the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtle species.

About 5,000 scales attributed to an estimated 380 Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) were discovered by customs officers on July 13, French authorities announced late Tuesday.

The illegal cargo was discovered packed inside 15 cartons sent by air freight from Haiti to Vietnam, in transit through Charles De Gaulle airport.

The cargo contained 496 kilograms of Hawksbill sea turtle shells, listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a critically endangered species.

Gerald Moussa Darmanin, the country’s Minister of Public Action and Accounts, together with Rodolphe Gintz, Director General of Customs and Nicolas Hulot, France’s Ecology minister, traveled to France’s busiest air hub Tuesday to personally thank the officers for their outstanding work in preventing the shell smuggling.

“Tortoiseshell traffic is up 16.5 percent,” the customs service said, announcing the seizure of the contraband. “In the long term, looting poses risks to the survival of the species.”

“These scales are especially used in the crafts and to embellish furniture,” the French government statement added, noting that the cargo has an estimated value of 300,000 euros.

The turtle’s striking shell is also used to make jewelry which is sold on the black market across the globe.

The capture and trade of Hawksbill sea turtles, as well as products derived from them, is outlawed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

“Trafficking of endangered species is one of the largest smuggling operations in the world feeding other trafficking, and it is an important component to the erosion of biodiversity,” Hulot said Tuesday after inspecting the contraband at the airport.

A Russian jet fighter was scrambled to intercept a US reconnaissance plane over neutral waters of the Black Sea on May 9, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.

“After approaching a plane at a safe distance the Russian pilot visually identified the flying object as a US surveillance plane P-8A Poseidon,” the Russian military said.

The Russian pilot “greeted” the US pilots with a special maneuver, after which the US plane changed its course away from the Russian border.

The incident occurred on May 9 at around 9am GMT, when Russian radars detected an aerial target over neutral waters of the Black Sea approaching the Russian border.

A Su-30 jet fighter was scrambled to intercept it, the ministry of defense said, adding that the jet safely returned to the base afterwards.

Previously, NBC reported that a Russian Su-27 jet approached a US plane over Black Sea neutral waters as close as seven meters. The channel cited Captain Pamela Kunze, a spokeswoman for US Naval Forces Europe, who said that the aircraft was on a routine operation in international airspace. She also stated that US Navy aircraft and ships often interact with Russian ships and planes in and over international waters, and that “most interactions are safe and professional,” according to NBC.

No communications that confirmed Russian involvement were intercepted, according to the official, however, he did say that it was likely due to the Russians being more careful in their communications, CNN reported. Russian jets, which may have been purchased by Syrian forces, were reportedly used to drop the ordinance that contained chemical agents. Further, a Russian-made drone was also reported to have been identified in the area, circling potential targets for a follow-up assault that hit a hospital.

Since the attack, US officials, including Defense secretary Jim Mattis, confirmed there was “no doubt” of the Syrian government’s involvement. Additionally, Turkish officials confirmed that Syria was still in possession of chemical weapons, and that autopsies on the victims did indeed show traces of sarin gas, despite Russia’s assertions that Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities had been destroyed in 2013.

“We know they have the expertise. And we suspect that they have help,” a US military official said on April 7.

To date, both Russia and Syria have denied involvement in the attack.
