FBI agent charged over leaks to The Intercept https://briefnews.eu/fbi-agent-charged-over-leaks-to-the-intercept/ https://briefnews.eu/fbi-agent-charged-over-leaks-to-the-intercept/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 01:06:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fbi-agent-charged-over-leaks-to-the-intercept/ An FBI agent in Minnesota has been charged over leaking secret documents to The Intercept, reportedly related to threats made by individuals from a particular Middle Eastern country and the FBI’s use of informants.

A two-page document filed by prosecutors for the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, cited by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, charges Terry James Albury with two counts of unlawfully disclosing and retaining national defense information.

The government charged Albury with unlawfully possessing a 2011 document about assessing the FBI’s “confidential human sources” and another document “relating to threats posed by certain individuals from a particular Middle Eastern country.” He is said to have “knowingly and willfully” shared those materials with a journalist.

The second count charges Albury with unlawfully possessing “a document relating to the use of an online platform for recruitment by a specific terrorist group.”

Neither the group, the Middle Eastern country, nor the publication are identified in the government materials. However, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) identified the materials as part of the “FBI’s secret rules” series published by The Intercept in January 2017.

Albury had electronically accessed over two-thirds of the 27 documents published by The Intercept, according to a previously sealed FBI request for a search warrant.

Albury’s attorneys said their client “accepts full responsibility for the conduct set forth” in the document. However, as the “only African-American FBI field agent in Minnesota,” his actions were “driven by a conscientious commitment to long-term national security and addressing the well-documented systemic biases within the FBI,” attorneys JaneAnne Murray and Joshua Dratel said in a statement on Wednesday.

Albury was hired by the FBI in 2001 and became an agent in 2005, according to MPR. He was assigned to counter-terrorism and other investigations at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).

On three occasions last summer, security cameras at the FBI’s MSP office captured Albury cutting and pasting screenshots of documents and photographing printouts with a digital camera, according to the search warrant application cited by the Star-Tribune.

The Intercept reported on Albury’s arrest on Wednesday, but neither confirmed nor denied that he was their source for the documents.

“We do not discuss anonymous sources,” said the outlet’s editor-in-chief Betsy Reed, who added that “The use of the Espionage Act to prosecute whistleblowers seeking to shed light on matters of vital public concern is an outrage, and all journalists have the right under the First Amendment to report these stories.”

While The Intercept has also declined to confirm that NSA contractor Reality Winner provided them with classified documents, the outlet has contributed to her legal defense fund. Winner was arrested in June 2017, after the FBI said it was able to track her down due to the print-out markings visible on the published documents.

The Intercept was launched in early 2014 as the platform for publishing documents obtained by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

  • The US Navy conducted a test intercept on Wednesday of its SM-3 Block IIA missile, part of the larger Aegis Ashore missile defense system.
  • The test was reportedly a failure according to administration officials, though the Pentagon has not confirmed the result.
  • The reported failure comes as tensions with North Korea are high, and as Japan plans to buy the system for its own defense.

The US Navy reportedly conducted a failed ballistic missile intercept test on Wednesday, the second failed test involving a SM-3 Block IIA in a year.

The missile was fired from an Aegis Ashore missile defense station in Hawaii and missed its intended target, which was launched from an aircraft.

A Russian Su-27 jet has forced an American Lockheed EP-3 surveillance plane to abort its mission over the Black Sea. Moscow says the jet “took all necessary precautions,” while the Pentagon accused it of an “unsafe” intercept.

“The entire flight of the Su-27 was conducted in accordance with international regulations, and there were no emergency situations,” said a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s Royal Air Force scrambled two fighter jets to intercept Russian strategic bombers near UK airspace on Monday, in another illustration of ongoing tensions.

The RAF confirmed that it sent Typhoon aircraft from the Lossiemouth base in Scotland on a “quick reaction alert” as two Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack bombers approached Britain.

“The Russian aircraft were initially monitored by a variety of friendly nation fighters and subsequently intercepted by the RAF in the North Sea,” the air force said. “At no point did the Russian aircraft enter sovereign UK airspace.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the pair of bombers flew over the Barents, Norwegian, and North seas during a 13-hour training mission that covered neutral waters, in line with international norms.

“All flights by Russian aircraft are performed in strict accordance with international rules for using airspace without infringement on any countries’ borders,” the ministry said in a statement.

Encounters between Russian and NATO warplanes have become increasingly frequent as Moscow has demonstrated its resurgent military might.

Russia also has increased its navy’s presence in the Mediterranean and other areas.

Last week, the HMS Westminster, a Portsmouth-based Type 23 frigate, was ordered to intercept two Russian corvettes and two supporting vessels that neared UK waters en route to their Baltic base.

Two F-16 fighter jets intercepted a small private plane, which had violated airspace closed for US President Donald Trump’s visit to Florida. The incident occurred at 4:24pm on Sunday, some 46km (29 miles) north of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, according to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The F-16s escorted the plane to North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport, where the pilot said he was unaware of the restrictions. The Federal Aviation Administration will now to determine whether the man is to be fined for the violation of presidential airspace.

Two Royal Air Force (RAF) jets were scrambled to intercept a pair of Russian bombers off the coast of Scotland in the latest military standoff between Britain and Moscow.

The fighter jets took off from the Lossiemouth base in Scotland on Wednesday to monitor two Russian aircraft heading towards a UK “area of interest.”

Once the RAF jets were airborne, both Russian planes turned away and no intercept took place.

“RAF aircraft launched to monitor two Russian military aircraft as they approached the UK area of interest, however the aircraft turned away and no intercept took place,” an RAF spokesperson said.

A Voyager aircraft was also sent from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to refuel the jets as they guarded British airspace over the North Sea.
It is the latest incident in which RAF jets have responded to Russian military maneuvers.

In February, Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby were sent to check on two Russian blackjack bombers.

The strategic bombers were followed by the RAF as they arrived from northeast of Britain and passed to the west of Ireland, over the Bay of Biscay and then turned back to Russian territory.

At the time, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it was surprised so much attention was being paid to a routine flight.

“All flights by Russian military aircraft are carried out in strict compliance with international regulations on the use of airspace over neutral waters, without violating the borders of other countries,” Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said.

He added he couldn’t understand why “the Royal Air Force pilots… view monitoring Russian jets and warships as an extraordinary event and the main news of the day.”

Another incident took place in July when a Typhoon was launched from a base in Romania as a response to a nuclear bomber operating near NATO airspace over the Black Sea.

Last year, Russian warships were tracked as they passed through the English Channel on their way to Syria.

The Danish Royal Air Force posted a video on Tuesday of two of their fighter jets intercepting a Russian bomber, Newsweek International first reported.

The video shows two Danish F-16s flanking a Russian Tu-95 on both sides, and one Danish pilot signaling towards the bomber, near the island of Bornholm, which is between Poland and Sweden according to Newsweek.

The Danish Air Force posted the video on Facebook, but did not detail when the incident took place.

NATO fighter jets also intercepted Russian IL-20 reconnaissance planes over the Baltic Sea three times last week, according to the Baltic News Network.

Aircraft intercepts between the west and Russia have increased since 2014, as relations between the two sides have deteriorated largely because of the conflict in Ukraine.

Lions v HurricanesPA

The Lions take on the Hurricanes in the final midweek game of the tour

22 mins – Hurricanes 0 Lions 13

PENALTY! And it’s over from halfway from Dan Biggar.

The Hurricanes are pinged again – these penalties are really costing them here.

Biggar steps up from long range and powers it over with plenty to spare.

What. A. Start.

Our man Neil Squires in Wellington:

“So the Scots are on this Lions tour after all. Greig Laidlaw’s interception is finished off by Tommy Seymour in a splendid piece of burglary.

“Nice moment for Seymour but that’s the way things are rolling for George North at the moment. If he’d lined up on the left wing as his No 11 jersey implied it would have been his try.

“North looks like playing the rest of the match at centre after Robbie Henshaw’s exit with shoulder damage.

“It’s frantic stuff but the Lions are having the better of it on the scoreboard so far.”

18 mins – Hurricanes 0 Lions 10

TRY! Made in Scotland, finished in Scotland!

Greig Laidlaw is back defending for the Lions deep inside the 22 but he comes up with a vital intercept after Tommy Seymour puts in a big hit.

Laidlaw hasn’t got the pace to go the whole length and is felled just after halfway – but he has the presence of mind to deliver a pass to, you’ve guessed it, that man Seymour.

He storms clear of the Hurricanes defence to go in under the post for his second try of the tour.

Brilliant start from the Lions.

13 mins – Hurricanes 0 Lions 3

Five penalties given away now – in just 13 minutes – from the Hurricanes. Lions are in the 22 again now but can they make it count?

No. The Lions attack is static this time and they’re like sitting ducks for the Hurricanes defence to rush up upon.

They end up holding up Dan Cole in the tackle to regain possession.

10 mins – Hurricanes 0 Lions 3

PENALTY! Dan Biggar kicks the Lions into the lead.

They’re camped in the Hurricanes 22 and earn a penalty advantage after the Canes are penalised for going offside.

They try to run it on the advantage, it comes to nothing and Biggar slots over a kick that my 90-year-old nan could have made from in front of the posts.

7 mins – Hurricanes 0 Lions 0

Is this a rugby pitch or a bowling green? It’s absolutely pristine out there.

Still, an error-strewn start from both sides . Hurricanes showing signs of wanting to play the game at pace in front of their 39,000-strong crowd but knock-ons from either side makes it a scrappy affair thus far.

And there’s even some early handbags from both sides after the Canes are pinged for a penalty at scrum time.

08:35: AND WE’RE OFF!

08:34: We’ll leave the final words before kick-off to our man Nigel Squires in Wellington.

“The Hurricanes in Wellington is the last chance for would-be Test Lions to break out of the midweek team in what is their final fixture of the tour.

“Top of the wannabes is George North, a talisman in Australia four years ago but quiet on this trip so far, followed by Courtney Lawes and CJ Stander. If the Test pack requires more muscle, these are two men who could supply it.

“It could well be a tough day at the office for the Lions though against the defending Super Rugby champions in the New Zealand capital.

“The Hurricanes might be without half-backs Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara, who are being saved for Saturday by the All Blacks, but they still have plenty of menace personified by discarded Test wing Julian Savea.

“The Lions could do with a morale-boosting win after the disappointment of Eden Park but they will have to earn it.”

08:32: Rory Best leads the Lions out into the (also briliantly-named) Cake Tin in Wellington. It’s a hostile roar as he does so from a home crowd baying for more Lions blood.

Brad Shields then follows by leading the Hurricanes side on to the pitch. A reminder: they’re the highest try scorers in Super Rugby. The noise? Far, far louder.

This one will be tasty…

08:29: Kick-off is now just six minutes away. Warren Gatland has given a last-minute interview to Sky Sports.

In it, he said: “There are a few opportunities today, there were aspects of our game on Saturday which were positive, we have to be really physical today.

“This group of players were excellent last week and they saw what happened with performances being rewarded with Test spots.

“Sometimes, for different reasons, players’ chances come later in a tour.”

08:25: Bizarre moment of the night number one. They are delivering the matchball for the game via… helicopter.

It’s just landed on the pitch and out gets a young girl – presumably with her mum – with the ball.

She proceeds to wave the helicopter off. You don’t see that on a cold November afternon at Twickenham.

08:22: Huge claim from Scott Quinnell on Sky Sports before the game.

He sensationally reveals: “I think if George North scores three or four tries tonight, he will come into Warren Gatland’s thinking.”

Really?! Who’d have thought it… man scores tries for a team struggling for tries and he may somehow get into the ‘thinking’ stage. Ahem.

Warren GatlandPA

Warren Gatland’s side need a pick-me-up after losing the first Test

08:11: As well as Jordie Barrett – the brother of  Beauden – and captain Brad Shields, the Hurricanes include the brilliantly-named Nehe Milner-Skudder, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi and Jeffery Toomaga-Allen in their line-up.

Cue me rushing to my copy and paste buttons at every available opportunity…

08:02: The Kiwis have upped the ante before the Hurricanes clash – in the media

The New Zealand Herald have put the boot into Warren Gatland by mocking up a picture of him as a clown on their front page this morning.

It follows Gatland’s accusations that New Zealand were involved in some foul play in the first Test.

The headline reads: “If the nose fits, Warren.”

07:55: Late change in the Lions line-up. Leigh Halfpenny has come in as a replacement for Jared Payne, who drops out with a… wait for it… headache.

07:50: Warren Gatland has opened the door to including anyone who shines today in his side for the second Test on Saturday. A reminder – they are one down after a 30-15 loss in the opener.

Gatland said: “A few players put their hands up for selection from the Chiefs game and played their way into the Test team, so they know that there is another opportunity for them on Tuesday against the Super Rugby champions.”

07:40: It’s the final midweek match of the tour, the last chance for the fringe players to nail down a place in the Test side.

For Courtney Lawes, George North and Jonathan Joseph, the stakes have never been higher. A big performance today and they could be facing up to the All Blacks on Saturday.

While for others, they’ll never wear the Lions jersey again.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, are Super Rugby champions – and they have released New Zealand trio Jordie Barrett, Nehe Milner-Skudder and Julian Savea for the clash. Kick-off at 8.30am. Here are your team line-ups.

British and Irish Lions: J Nowell (England); T Seymour (Scotland); J Joseph (England), R Henshaw (Ireland); G North (Wales); D Biggar (Wales); G Laidlaw (Scotland); J Marler (England), R Best (Ireland, captain), D Cole (England), I Henderson (Ireland), C Lawes (England), J Haskell (England), J Tipuric (Wales), CJ Stander (Ireland). Replacements: K Dacey (Wales), A Dell (Scotland), T Francis (Wales), C Hill (Wales), G Kruis (England), G Davies (Wales), F Russell (Scotland), J Payne (Ireland).

Hurricanes: J Barrett, N Milner-Skudder, V Aso, N Laumape, J Savea, O Black, T Toiroa-Tahuriorangi, B May, R Ricitelli, J To’omaga-Allen, M Abbott, S Lousi, V Fifita, C Gibbins, B Shields (captain).
