Beckett is a detective game about a missing persons investigator on the lookout for someone who’s suffering from a “reality-altering illness”. Understanding precisely how consumers and users interact with your website and apps is paramount to any company’s success. Interaction data is not only necessary, but it’s also imperative.

ContentSquare — a SaaS digital experience insights company — has announced today that it has raised a $ 42 million Series B funding round led by Canaan, the VC firm that previously invested in LendingClub, Ebates and Match.com.

Highland Europe — a prior investor in ContentSquare — also participated in the round, as did Eurazeo and H14.

ContentSquare computes billions of touch and mouse movements every day and provides insights and analytics to help brands understand, hypothesize, and update their digital properties. With its tool operating in more than 190 countries, it takes interaction data and turns it into insights and actions that help brands to increase engagement, reduce costs, and maximize conversion rates.

“The funds will be used to continue our path to becoming the worldwide leader of digital experience insights,” Jonathan Cherki, CEO at ContentSquare, told me. “We strongly believe that the best way to improve a company is to improve its people, to empower everyone with the knowledge of how their actions perform and how they contribute to the success of their company. Therefore, we developed a software that helps businesses increase conversion rates and engagement by improving the efficiency of every person in the digital team: content manager, eCommerce director, head of acquisition, UX/UI, etc.”

One of the critical areas gaining from the funds will be the company’s AI research and development.

“Artificial intelligence is at the core of our product, helping brands understand their customers’ digital journeys in a way that is quick and easy, and we will increase the development power around it,” Cherki said. “We will invest and grow our team of 70 developers and expand to more developers, data scientists, and digital experts.”

AI continues to be an essential driver in marketing technology. The pace of AI use in marketing is not slowing down and continues to permeate the entire industry.

“The future of AI in marketing tech is to empower every team member to make the right decision to provide the right experience to their visitors with the pain of digging through mountains of data,” Cherki said. “ContentSquare provides prioritized insights based on potential impact so that the team doesn’t get lost in user data and is pointed in the right direction. We use machine-learning algorithms for in-depth experience analysis, so our users get valuable insights instantly and effortlessly and can quickly understand what hinders their user from reaching their goals.”

Geographic expansion is also crucial to ContentSquare. Founded in Paris, the company has its eye on the U.S. market.

“The timing for expansion in America is now,” Cherki said. “During the last five years, the market has focused on acquisition, but the costs of acquisition are high, and traffic does not translate into conversions. Specifically, on mobile, traffic is increasing, but conversions are not. The only way to survive in this digital jungle is through optimized, seamless digital experiences. Now, we will grow the team of 30 who currently work with Walmart, Tiffany’s, HP, Goldman Sachs and more, and expand our operations exponentially here.”

So what’s next for ContentSquare, now that the funding is in place?

“We have spent the last years building the infrastructure for our 2018 growth, and now it’s time to execute our vision,” Cherki said. “First, we needed to change the dependencies that digital teams have on data analysts, so no longer does a content manager, for example, have to wait to see the results of his actions or ask the data team to translate dashboards into actions.”

ContentSquare will also ramp up its automation capabilities as part of its roadmap.

“We constantly lack time, so we developed our artificial intelligence engine to automate insights that go directly to the teams,” Cherki said. “These insights are prioritized based on impact and show people where they need to focus on and predict the outcome in KPIs.”

Finally, Cherki says that the company will provide a solution that adapts to the mindset of the customer.

“Customers make decisions based on emotions and justify them rationally,” Cherki said. “Therefore we need to better connect and adapt to that mindset, to understand what they want to achieve and what the best way to get there is. Identifying customer mindsets based on behavior analytics is fascinating and will change the digital landscape.”

The company previously raised a $ 20 million Series A fundraising closed in the fall of 2016 led by Highland Europe and supported by business angels from Seed4soft. Since then the company has expanded globally, with offices in Paris, Munich, London and New York, and has grown to over 200 employees. Today’s round takes its total funding to $ 62 million.

Philip Beesley’s Astrocyte aims to show that architecture can be more than just ornamental. Built from acrylic, mylar, sensors, custom glasswork, 3D-printed lights and using AI, chemistry and a responsive soundscape, it not only invokes emotional reactions but reacts to participants’ movements and gestures. The giant, delicate-looking structure (inspired by astrocyte nerve cells), also prompts unusually respectful interactions from human observers.

The aerial scaffold structure was part of Toronto’s Expo for Design, Innovation and Technology (EDIT 2017), and hosted at an abandoned Unilever soap-manufacturing factory. It was built from 300,000 components by Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (PBAI), in collaboration with Beesley’s Living Architecture Systems Group at the University of Waterloo.

Astrocyte responds to viewers movements with patterns of light, surround sound and vibrations not unlike signals propagating along a nerve. The glasswork also holds oils and chemicals meant to represent the structure and energies of organic life. With the artwork, Beesley and his Living Architecture group are also exploring future building materials that could self-repair or alter spaces through media, light and sound.

“PBAI Studio works with a wide consortium of artists, engineers, scientists, and researchers as a central member of the Living Architecture Systems research group,” Beesley told Farmboy Fine Arts. “We explore the possibilities of next generation architecture, responsive environments, digital media and immersive sculpture. So we are asking, how might buildings and our environments begin to know and care about us? And might they start, in very primitive ways, to become alive?”

Astrocyte is based on “biophilic” architecture and design, which posits that humans innately seek to connect with nature. Much like with some types of vegetation and other natural systems, it looks fragile but is tough enough to handle interaction with exhibition participants.

“The work is robust, yet delicate in nature, and this seems to encourage different ways of acting,” Beesley said. “Observing people interacting with these spaces is quite striking because extraordinarily gentle and respectful responses tend to happen. Have we caused someone to experience a different, and perhaps healthier form of interaction?”

Astrocyte was created in partnership with 4D Sound, with the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Ontario Arts Council.

Apple’s new ARKit platform basically looks like HoloLens inside of an iPhone. All that’s missing is a controller-free interaction system. A new patent uncovered this week suggests that may be on the way, though.

Patently Apple has revealed a new filing from the company for a new 3D camera system with depth sensing capabilities used for gesture recongition. The system takes data from the reflected points of a light beam to “compute a depth map” of the area around it. Interestingly enough, the patent points to this specific type of depth mapping as a possible type of control for gaming.

“Such depth mapping may be applied to interactive video games,” the patent states. “For example, a subject may interact with a game by making various gestures with his hand, and depth mapping may be used to identify the gestures.”

It sounds like interacting with the light beam and the reflections will give the camera positional data on your hands, then. The patent doesn’t make any mention of AR but this certainly seems like a good fit for the tech.

On HoloLens, you interact with virtual software by holding your hand out and making a pinching motion. This type of controller free system allows for easy navigation of menus, even if it isn’t the most versatile tool when it comes to controlling games and other content.

We’d be eager to see just how expressive you can be with Apple’s solution. Currently the company doesn’t have an official AR headset to pair it with, but such a device has been rumored for a long time now. Perhaps this system could one day help us stroke our new AR dogs?

It’s typically used to relieve mild or moderate pain, such as headaches, toothache or sprains, and reduce fevers caused by illnesses such as colds and flu.

Paracetamol is often recommended as one of the first treatments for pain, as it’s safe for most people to take and side effects from the painkillers are rare.

People often question if it is safe to take paracetamol and ibuprofen together, and the NHS recommended it is safe to take both doses at the same time or spaced apart.

NHS Choices said: “If you’re 16 or over, you may wish to use paracetamol and ibuprofen together to reduce pain and fever.

“There are no known harmful interactions between paracetamol and ibuprofen in people over 16.”

However, there are some drug combinations which experts warn could react ‘unpredictably’ with other medications.

One type of drug – used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes could affect how the drug works.

Lixisenatide is used to help reduce blood glucose in people with diabetes, and it is usually injected once a day under the skin.

NICE, a health watchdog, said: “Lixisenatide possibly reduces the absorption of paracetamol when given one to four hours before paracetamol.

Paracetamol could also interact with anti-coagulants Warfarin, a used to prevent blood clots.

NICE said: “The anticoagulant effect of coumarins possibly enhanced by prolonged regular use of paracetamol.”

A study published by experts in France investigated the link between Warfarin and paracetamol.

The research, published in the journal Haematologica said: “Paracetamol at 4 g daily (a dose higher than that used in clinical practice) potentiates the anticoagulant response produced by warfarin.

“Clinicians should be aware of this clinically significant and underestimated interaction.”

This means taking paracetamol could increase the risk of haemorrhage – or bleeding.

Paracetamol could also interact with some drugs used to treat epilepsy, primary biliary cirrhosis and some anti fungal medicine.

People should always seek advice from doctors and pharmacists before taking medication.

NHS Choices said: “Adults can usually take one or two 500mg tablets every four to six hours, but shouldn’t take more than 4g (eight 500mg tablets) in the space of 24 hours.

“There are no known problems caused by taking paracetamol with any specific foods or by drinking moderate amounts of alcohol while taking paracetamol.”
