Carolyn Barek is back on duty. Annabella Sciorra will bring her Law & Order: Criminal Intent character to Law & Order: SVU this season, TVLine has learned exclusively. Sciorra played Det. Barek, a Major Crimes officer and partner to Chris Noth’s Det. Mike Logan, in Season 5 of Criminal Intent. She left at the end of that season, which aired in 2005-2006; in a later episode, a line of dialogue hinted at tension between Logan and his former colleague. All these years later, Barek is now a lieutenant in the Bronx Special Victims Unit. She’ll show up on SVU when she forms a join task force with Capt. Olivia Benson and the Manhattan SVU to hunt down a series rapist who has struck in both boroughs. We hear that Sciorra’s episode is slated to air sometime in February. Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays at 9/8c on NBC. In addition to Criminal Intent, Sciorra’s TV credits include Truth Be Told, Daredevil, GLOW, Luke Cage, Bull, CSI andThe L Word. She also earned an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Gloria Trillo on HBO’s The Sopranos. Her big screen work includes The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Jungle Fever. Criminal Intent fans, what do you think about Barek’s reappearance? Hit the comments with your thoughts!

China will be a leading nation in terms of national power and global impact by 2050, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Communist Party officials in a major address in Beijing on Wednesday. Xi announced a two-stage plan to become a “great modern socialist country”, split between 2020 to 2035 and 2035 to 2050.
Xi’s comments came as part of his “work report” speech that officially opened the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party.
The five-yearly meeting sets out the vision and policies and establishes the party’s top leadership for the next term. More than 2,200 delegates have gathered in Beijing for the congress while the Communist Party’s economic and political announcements are being watched very closely.
China, which Xi said is the world’s “largest developing country”, is currently the world’s second largest economy and has the second largest stock market. Over decades of providing foreign aid, China has also recently emerged as the world’s largest foreign aid donor.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?
This week we destroy Turkey and America’s right to a safe space for their denial of the Armenian Genocide, go high concept by killing goats and people, mix fiction and reality inside a cinematic blender, turn 13 and turn to a life of crime, and get the theme song to Bill Nye: The Science Guy stuck in our heads.
Radius Trailer
Liam (Diego Klattenhoff) wakes from a car crash at the bottom of a ditch with no memory of who he is. As he makes his way into town, he discovers that anyone who comes within a 50-foot radius of him dies instantly. Out of options, he tries to live in seclusion to protect others, until one day, his murderous power seems to subside… with the arrival of a woman (Charlotte Sullivan) who says she was in the crash with him. She too is suffering from amnesia and looking for answers. Together they embark on a journey to uncover who they really are…
You’re taking your movie making money’s life into your own hands when you throw something high concept at me.
If it’s something like A Ghost Story, it’s going to fool me and you end up with someone who can’t believe I spent all that money and time with a movie that went nowhere with me. If it’s something like Swiss Army Man, though, you’ve got a fan for life. That’s why this one has me on the line like a fish on a hook. Directors Caroline Labrèche & Steeve Léonard are working through what looks like a bizarre Twilight Zone episode but instead of revealing some truth about humanity’s true self we just get a couple who have to figure out how and why they are annihilating all living beings in their, wait for it, radius. I’m just in the mood for a fun story like this and it looks like it’ll fill up a couple of hours just fine as long as they’ve figured out how to make this hook’s premise last all that run time.
Bill Nye: Science Guy Trailer
Two things:
1) Mr. Wizard was, hands down, one of my favorite shows on Nickelodeon
2) I absolutely suck at math and science
One of the things that directors David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg have done with their trailer is capture that essence of what makes someone not only memorable in pop culture but also extolling how those people are giving back in a positive way. I just missed the window for being within the target demo of Bill Nye the Science Guy when the show ran from 1993-1998, I remembered him more for his work on the comedy show Almost Live!, but that didn’t diminish his effect of being the go-to guy when it came to figuring out who best was able to teach science concepts to kids. His shows were engaging, informative and had a deep impact. The trailer explores the beginning of what would be a career spent in the service of education. Initially teaching children to transitioning to teaching adults with childish tendencies when it came to scientific fact. I genuinely enjoy documentaries like this where the emphasis is on a career and that that devotion means in the overall trajectory to a person’s life so while there doesn’t seem anything explosive to uncover there’s still a mighty story that is ready to be told.
Intent to Destroy Trailer
My respect for Eric Bogosian runs deep.
I’ve read his books, watched Oliver Stone adapt his searing and insightful Talk Radio, paid to see him perform live, and, now, listen to his perspective on a subject I am woefully ignorant about: the Armenian Genocide. Director Joe Berlinger takes it from the top here in setting the table for what is an extremely clear and convoluted story. Understanding what this genocide meant and why this country, along with other governments, are unconscionably silent on this are the things that make understanding issues of who will eventually be standing on the wrong side of history so powerful. Joe, as a filmmaker, comes from a hearty stock of delving into the more thorny areas of history as it concerns our dark underbelly. From the documentary about the West Memphis Three that made him an Academy Award nominated director to the documentary that made him an Emmy award winning filmmaker with Ten Days That Unexpectedly Changed America, he is probably the most qualified to tackle something that is difficult to unpack. The trailer zips by without ever being dragged down with dumping too much information while also being insanely provocative as you learn how we, as a nation, have swallowed it into the more quieter corners of our history. Dense and powerful stuff here.

A Ciambra Trailer
His name just lingers there.
Ok, we get it, Martin Scorsese loved your movie. Other than having this badge of honor, and it’s absolutely the right thing to do when you have something people are going to have to read. Director Jonas Carpignano looks to create a different kind of coming-of-age movie and one that involves a life of crime. There is a weight here in that what you have is a story about a boy who is at a crossroads that is either going to lead down a life of being an upstanding citizen or one that will only result in a life of thievery and abject loneliness. The road seems to be beset on all sides of this boy having to choose the more dangerous option but the trailer is slick enough that it gives us that taste for the thug life while interspersing pull-quotes that help make the case why this movie deserves a shot with you. A boy becoming a man, that’s universal.
Flesh and Blood Trailer
Raw.
I normally eschew using that word, raw, to describe something but this trailer from director Mark Webber is exactly that. It’s rough around its edges, it’s narrative self-admittedly vacillates between fiction and non-fiction, but the end product sells itself as a wholly original creation. I didn’t know what to expect once I launched into watching this but the story and the small little turns that we take feels like a story rooted in reality than it does with telling a parable. I am taken by the risks it takes in not giving us something familiar but it’s in that quest to deliver a genuine story that it stands on its own merits to be judged on how well we move throughout the narrative and how engaged we are with those who populate inside of it.
Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers to possibly be included in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp

GUEST:
Personal digital assistants have taken the world by storm. We have Siri and Google Assistant on our phones, and many of us have Amazon Echo and Google Home, as well. Voice user interfaces, which have been available to consumers since the 1990s, have finally gone mainstream as a way to play music, set timers, and control smart homes.
But voice hasn’t really taken off for ecommerce, despite Amazon’s leadership in the smart speaker market. When asked about this a few months ago, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said “Voice interface is only going to take you so far on shopping. It’s good for reordering consumables, where you don’t have to make a lot of choices, but most online shopping is going to be facilitated by having a display.”
Do you have an AI strategy — or hoping to get one? Check out VB Summit on October 23-24 in Berkeley, a high-level, invite-only AI event for business leaders.
Amazon has since released the Echo Show, which does have a display. But even on the Echo Show, the shopping experience is marginal compared to shopping on laptops and phones. The main shopping use case on Echo Show is still reordering, rather than finding something new and buying it.
Nevertheless, given our strong preference for voice as a natural interface, it seems inevitable that we’ll use voice interfaces for shopping. But what will it take to get us there?
Bezos is right that most online shopping is facilitated by a display. But requiring a display defeats many of the advantages of a voice interface — most significantly, not needing to be close enough to a screen to see or touch it. What will it take to get people to move beyond reordering and shop for everything using voice?
Voice interfaces work well for products that people describe by brand name, e.g, an iPhone 8. There may still be a few product variations to choose from (e.g., color), but it’s not hard for a voice interface to address these through a simple dialog. Shoppers who use voice interfaces to play music, for example, are already familiar with this kind of interaction.
Beyond brand name merchandise, voice search can work for products shoppers aren’t very particular about, like milk. In fact, some retailers, like Trader Joe’s, have already limited their catalogs so many shopping decisions are already made.
Thus, retailers can apply sensible defaults to category queries, such as assuming the searcher wants the best-selling product in a category. Retailers can also use personalization to limit choices, especially in domains like apparel, using information like the shopper’s gender and size.
Voice recognition isn’t perfect, though it has gotten quite good. But while voice may change how we shop, it doesn’t change the goal of shopping or the essential challenge faced by retailers: recognizing the shopper’s intent and connecting them to products that satisfy that intent. Pairing voice recognition with a bad search engine is simply putting lipstick on a pig.
Search engines still often fail to understand the shopper’s intent, but at least a shopper can scroll down the page to find what they want or refine the search query. When it comes to query understanding, voice is a far less forgiving medium. Shoppers can try repeating or rephrasing their search queries, but they quickly become frustrated and give up.
It’s essential that a voice-based shopping interface understands the shopper’s search query. It’s easy to see where this goes wrong today. For example, a search on the Echo Show for “girls’ shoes without laces” returns no-tie shoelaces as a top result. While the result is related to the search query, it’s not what the shopper asked for. Query understanding is essential in order to make shopping by voice successful.
Reproducing an in-store experience for shoppers using a voice interface requires providing a way for them to navigate among choices. Voice interfaces need to support context so that “show me men’s shoes” followed by “show me black ones” refines the original search to men’s black shoes. The same goes for refining by size, style, and other attributes.
A voice interface should offer sensible refinement options when the shopper’s original search query is too broad. That might mean suggesting different categories (e.g., boots, loafers) or prompting the shopper to specify an attribute like price (e.g., “How much were you planning to spend?”) that significantly narrows down the options.
A conversational interface allows shoppers to clarify and refine their intent, much like a conversation with a helpful sales associate.
We’re just entering an age of voice interfaces for mainstream consumer applications. It will take some time to work out the kinks, improve query understanding, and figure out the design of conversational interfaces. But we’ll get there. Someday, our grandchildren will even marvel that anyone ever used a keyboard for shopping. Of course, they’ll only find keyboards in a museum.

Mendy, 22, has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United and Chelsea said to be interested in him.
However, Gianluca Di Marzio claim Liverpool have entered the race to sign Mendy as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his ranks ahead of a potential Champions League campaign next season.
It is claimed Klopp is interested in securing Mendy’s services and has made him a priority summer transfer target.
The Italian transfer guru also suggests Liverpool are in talks over bringing Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon to Anfield.
However, the Reds will not push through a deal to sign Sessegnon until they have tried to sign Mendy.
But Liverpool will face a fight to sign Mendy with Chelsea and Manchester United also registering an interest in the France international.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is keen to bolster his defensive ranks ahead of next season and views Mendy as an ideal candidate to fit into his 3-4-3 system.
And he would also provide healthy competition at full-back for Marcos Alonso.
While United boss Jose Mourinho has earmarked Mendy as a potential candidate to replace Luke Shaw, who has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
But United will apparently only stand a chance of signing Mendy if they secure Champions League football next season.
Which is possible through the back door route with United needing to beat Ajax in the Europa League final to ensure they mix it with the elite once again next term.
Mendy has made 39 appearances across all competitions for the newly-crowned Ligue 1 champions this season and has scored one goal.

It all started innocently enough. A couple of former Mercedes-Benz engineers plucked a few unsuspecting M-B sedans from slumber and took them back to their workshop to massage the cars’ innards well past the point of reason. A lot has happened in the ensuing 50 years, but AMG—despite having been wholly absorbed by Mercedes-Benz more than a decade ago—still operates with relative autonomy. Transforming Benz models into autobahn burners remains a priority, but AMG is no slouch when it comes to developing vehicles on its own. The latest homegrown effort is this AMG GT concept coupe, which has four doors and thus, technically, is a sedan. READ MORE ››
