For fans of The Rookie, it has been an agonizing 11 weeks since the ABC series set aside its “light procedural” label by having Officer Lucy Chen get drugged and then lobbed into the trunk of a car, at the close of a very bad first date. But this Sunday at 10/9c, the Nathan Fillion-led drama finally returns to resolve that cliffhanger — and, as teased in haunting promos, hopefully save Lucy (played by Melissa O’Neill) from being no less than buried alive (!). “It’s super intense, obviously,” showrunner Alexi Hawley tells TVLine. “The cliffhanger left you in a really powerful place, and from here on it’s a roller coaster ride. It’s also very emotional.” As Chen’s TO, Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), and the rest of the team become aware of Lucy’s fate, “It is 100-percent all hands on deck,” says Winter. Tim, in particular, takes the matter “super personally,” seeing as he is the one who nudged his rookie to focus on something besides work and give this guy Caleb (guest star Michael Cassidy), whom she met at a bar, a chance. “You’re going to see Tim lose his mind,” Winter forewarns. “Tim feels like he is the one who set her up on that date, even though he was cautious of that guy when he first met him.” Through one-and-a-half seasons, Officer Bradford has kept things pretty formal between himself and Chen, though in recent episodes, Winter notes, “you sort of saw him ease up, which was a big turn for them.” So to feel any sense of responsibility for Chen’s dire predicament does a real number on the lawman. “When you think about all of Tim’s baggage in general — like, him feeling like he failed his wife — this is just another brick taken out of the building for him, you know?” “One of the things I love about The Rookie is I find it easy to watch, because it’s not dissimilar from real life,” Fillion says in teasing this midseason premiere’s tonal turn. “We have intense moments but for the most part life is normal. Life is lighter. We make jokes about our pain, and we move on. But at the same time we are a police show, and every once in a while we have to dip into that intensity, and this is one of those times. This is where we dip into the danger, the risk inherent in the job.” (Fun fact: Though Wersching also played a baddie on Castle, where Hawley was an EP, her casting as Rosalind was pure coincidence. “I wasn’t there when she [guest-starred in Seasons 6 and 7],” says Hawley, who left Castle after Season 4 then returned to showrun Season 8. “She actually came to audition and I was like, ‘Oh, she’s phenomenal!’ And then Nathan told me she had been on Castle.”) Surveying Angela and Wes’ entertaining “Odd Couple” dynamic, the actress adds, “Everything about them is opposite, but I think their passion and their drive is what connects them.” While one might worry that Angela will be distracted by her personal drama to help her colleagues search for Lucy, Hawley says that isn’t the case at all. In fact, Diaz excitedly reports that for one thrilling sequence she got to ride in a helicopter for the first time ever.) “Actually, what has happened to Lucy ends up being something of a cathartic moment with Wes trying to help find her,” the EP teases. “It ends up being an emotional story for him, as well.” Want more scoop on The Rookie, or for any other show? Email InsideLine@tvline.com and your question may be answered via Matt’s Inside Line. Speaking to Digital Spy, the showrunner revealed the next outing will be more intense than ever before. She teased: “What I would say is that season 1 is very much about building blocks. “It’s about constructing the world, and setting up these characters, and putting them on paths, and knocking those dominoes over.” Moreover, the showrunner went on to tease conflict between characters in the future.RELATED STORIES
Nolan, meanwhile, takes the lead on approaching Rosalind Dyer (guest star Annie Wersching), the serial killer on whom the LAPD was squarely focused at the time of Chen’s abduction, to see if she has information which could help capture her apparent padawan, Caleb. (Watch an exclusive sneak peek.)
The Rookie‘s fall finale also left us with a second cliffhanger, in which Officer Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) came home to find that her boyfriend Wesley (Shawn Ashmore), who has suffered from PTSD ever since a stabbing, had overdosed on a mix of anxiety meds and booze. “That’s the thing with relationships — we have the good, but we also have the hardships,” Diaz observes. “But that’s how we learn and grow and become better.”

A decade after an infamous NHL line brawl that included both goaltenders dropping the gloves at centre ice, Martin Biron gave Ray Emery a chance to take one final blow.
Emery declined.
A Buffalo radio station held its annual celebrity roast in February 2017, 10 years after Emery got the better of Biron in a line brawl during the midst of a heated Ottawa Senators-Buffalo Sabres rivalry. Biron even sent Emery a text encouraging him to attend, saying the city of Buffalo would love it, but the retired goalie wouldn't budge.
"We reached out to Ray to come to Buffalo and take his shots off the ice and Ray was uncomfortable with that," said Biron. "He was like, 'Oh no I don't want people to hate me, it was just a hockey game. I don't want to speak badly of Buffalo or you.'
"He didn't do it because he didn't want to be perceived as a big-time villain that had his run-ins with off-ice issues," added Biron. "That's not what he wanted to be. It's not who he was and I felt like that was indicative of what type of person he was and I totally respect that."
Emery, who helped the Senators reach the final in 2007 by eliminating Biron's Sabres in the third round of the playoffs and also won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013, drowned in his hometown of Hamilton on Sunday. He was 35.
Hamilton Police said a cause of death would be confirmed after a post-mortem.
Biron, who retired in 2014, was at a charity hockey game in Buffalo when he heard the news.
"I was with a lot of other former players that have crossed paths with Ray and everybody was thinking the same thing, extremely sad," said Biron.
Ottawa and Buffalo were two of the top teams in the NHL in 2007 and had a feud that boiled over during a regular-season game, leading to one of the more memorable moments of Biron's career.
It started when Ottawa's Chris Neil hit Chris Drury with a blindside check that cut open the forehead of the Sabres forward. On the next shift, Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff, who had last change as the home team, sent out enforcers Andrew Peters and Adam Mair along with rookie and soon-to-be known agitator Patrick Kaleta.
Ottawa's coach, the late Bryan Murray, had the scoring line of Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and Mike Comrie on the ice, so when play resumed and the gloves came off, Emery prepared to get involved. He met Biron for what turned into a one-sided tilt in Emery's favour. Then he took on Peters, smiling and laughing during the entire spectacle while holding his own against the Sabres forward.
"I knew fisticuffs were gonna happen, so as soon as the puck dropped I just started to skate and Ray skated to meet me and when he pulled his mask off he had that smile on his face like I was chopped liver," said the 40-year-old Biron. "He was gonna beat me up with one hand behind his back and that's basically what happened.
"For us in Buffalo, one of the most memorable games in the franchise's history, or at least this generation of Sabres fans, was the brawl. It was a crazy game."
The rivalry eventually faded and both goalies soon moved to new teams. Emery played a year in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League before spending time with Philadelphia, Anaheim and Chicago, with his final stop in Germany for part of the 2015-16 season.
Many members in the hockey communityexpressed their condolences on social media when Emery's death was confirmed. Biron was amongst the group.
"He was a respected teammate and a respected opponent," said Biron.
"When I think of Ray, I think of a really big competitor."

In the short history of our country, the United States rose to global military dominance — yeah, I said it. Come at me, China.
But the road to the top was paved with the blood of good men and women. Looking back, there are some pivotal battles we remember with solemn pride and a little bit of hoo-rah.
Let’s check out 10 of the most intense battles in United States history.
U.S. Marine Corps/Photo
The Battle of Chosin Reservoir was one of the defining battles of the Korean War and the stuff of legend in the Marine Corps.
In the Fall of 1950, U.N. Forces under the command of General MacArthur had almost captured the entirety of North Korea when they were attacked by thousands of Chinese Communist soldiers. The U.S. X Corps was forced to retreat and by mid-November the 1st Marine Division and elements of the 7th Infantry Division found themselves surrounded, outnumbered, and at risk of annihilation in the high North Korean Mountains at the Chosin Reservoir. Their only way out was a fighting retreat back to the coast.
Although as Chesty Puller put it, they weren’t retreating, they were “fighting in the opposite direction.”
Over the course of the next 17 days, the Marines and soldiers fought the Chinese — and bouts of frostbite — with fierce determination and epic endurance. They broke through the enemy’s encirclement and even rebuilt a bridge the Chinese destroyed using prebuilt bridge sections dropped by the U.S. Air Force.
By the end of the battle, the U.S. Marines suffered 836 dead and roughly 10,000 wounded. The Army had 2,000 dead and 1,000 wounded. The Chinese had the most catastrophic losses. Six out of their ten divisions were wiped out and only one would ever see combat again. Although exact numbers are not known, historians estimate that anywhere between 30,000 and 80,000 Chinese were killed.
Although technically a loss for the Marines, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir lives on in memory as an example of the Marine fighting spirit and the ability to find strength even when the odds are stacked against them.

A year and a half into the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln needed a Union victory. He finalized the Emancipation Proclamation during the summer but his cabinet feared it would be too difficult to enforce after a string of northern losses, including the Second Battle of Bull Run (known as the Battle of Manassas to the rebels).
Lincoln charged Major General George B. McClellan with the defense of Washington D.C. against Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North. Earlier in the month, Lee divided his men, sending General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson to capture Harper’s Ferry. Following Jackson’s success, Lee decided to make a stand in Maryland at Antietam Creek.
After two days of posturing, fighting began early in the morning on Sep. 17, 1862, and lasted well past sundown, with staggering casualties on both sides and no ground gained. The next day, both armies gathered their dead and wounded and Lee retreated south.
It was the bloodiest one day battle in American history, with 23,000 casualties from both sides and nearly 4,000 dead.
Sticking with the Civil War, let’s move on:

The Battle of Gettysburg was not only the largest battle of the Civil War, it remains the largest battle ever fought in North America.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee had just won a decisive victory against Union General George Meade’s Army of the Potomac in Virginia. Wanting to capitalize on the recent victory, Lee led his troops on a second invasion into the Northern states to defeat the Union on their own soil and hopefully gain recognition of the confederacy by European countries.
General George Meade’s Army of the Potomac pursued Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and the two forces met near Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The Confederates outnumbered the Yankees at roughly 30,000 to 18,000. By the end of the first day, the Yankees were forced to retreat through town to cemetery ridge and Culp’s Hill.
By the next day, both sides had gained reinforcements. Meade now had roughly 94,000 soldiers in a fish hook formation, allowing him to successfully move troops from one front to another. Lee had roughly 72,000 soldiers wrapped around the fish hook.
The Confederates attacked first but at the end of the second day, the Union defense lines held strong.
On the 3rd day, Lee tried an aggressive attack to crush the federals. He sent General Pickett with approximately 12,500 men to crush the Union Army with a direct charge.
It turned out to be one of Lee’s most ill-fated decisions. Fifty percent of Pickett’s men were wounded or killed and the rest of his troops were forced to retreat.
On July 4th, Lee and his men waited for the Yankees to attack — but they didn’t.
That night the Northern Army of Virginia began its retreat back to the South. His train of wounded men stretched 14 miles long. Lee’s greatest opportunity became his greatest failure and his hopes of European recognition for the Confederacy — and a quick end to the war — were dashed.
Casualties were high on both sides. The Union suffered around 23,000 casualties while the South suffered 28,000 — more than a third of Lee’s army.
The battle was the deadliest in the Civil War and prompted Lincoln’s iconic Gettysburg address four and a half months later at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.
Although the fighting continued for nearly two more years, Gettysburg was an irrevocable turning point in the war in the Union’s favor.

Fears for NASA’s Opportunity rover are growing after engineers lost contact with Mars’ oldest mechanical explorer during a raging dust storm.
NASA confirmed that Opportunity’s subsystems had been knocked off as the Martian storm, which is enveloping the Red Planet and blocking out the sun, continues to intensify. Solar power is essential for the rover to operate.

While the rover has proved more resilient than expected by lasting nearly 15 years despite being only designed for a 90-day mission, the end could now be nigh for the durable device.
As it stands, the rover’s mission clock which is programmed to wake the computer so it can check power levels, is the only function still operational.
The Martian dust storm blotting out the sun above Opportunity has continued to intensify. It blankets a quarter of the planet. All rover subsystems are off, except a mission clock, programmed to wake the computer to check power levels. Full status report: https://t.co/VwuuPwEpPApic.twitter.com/rQvHDsxuQj

Mission engineers are doubtful that the rover has enough sunlight to charge back up for at least the next several days. NASA says if the spacecraft’s computer determines that its batteries don’t have enough charge, it will again put itself back to sleep.
The massive dust storm, first detected on May 30, now blankets a quarter of the planet – some 14 million square miles (35 million sq km) of Martian surface.
This is not Opportunity’s first time to hunker down during a dust storm, however. In 2007 a huge storm covered the planet, leading to two weeks of minimal operations, including several days with no contact from the rover in an effort to conserve its power. Ultimately, the storm subsided and Opportunity prevailed.

Another glimmer of hope comes from the reawakening of a long lost NASA spacecraft earlier this year. In February scientists were stunned to detected a new signal from the satellite ‘IMAGE’ some 13 years after the spacecraft was declared lost.
