Netflix is no stranger to rescuing movies on the brink of oblivion, but now it’s getting more comfortable with the idea of giving TV pilots a second chance. The company has ordered 10 episodes of Mixtape, a romantic musical series whose pilot didn’t make the cut at Fox. Creator Joshua Safran (of Gossip Girl and Quantico fame, above) will continue to be involved along with most of the pilot’s cast, with only the main actor’s role changing.
The show revolves around the love stories linking a seemingly “disparate” group of Los Angeles residents, with music naturally providing the glue.
Netflix isn’t quite the knight in shining armor here: the studio shopped the production to streaming companies almost as soon as it turned down a conventional TV series. And Netflix is more than a little cozy with Fox, having picked up Lucifer days earlier. Nonetheless, this speaks to the mounting influence of services like Netflix. They might not yet be to the point where they’re regularly taking the biggest shows away from TV networks, but they’re a viable option whenever there’s a show promising enough to have a chance beyond conventional broadcasts.

Monday was the date set for the administration to impose sanctions under the Countering American Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), adopted with overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate last July.
“Today, we have informed Congress that this legislation and its implementation are deterring Russian defense sales,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. Since the law was enacted “we estimate that foreign governments have abandoned planned or announced purchases of several billion dollars in Russian defense acquisitions,” she added.
Members of Congress were informed in a classified briefing, according to a statement cited by Politico reporter Elana Schor.

Under CAATSA, the US has been putting foreign governments and private entities “on notice,” warning them against “significant transactions” with Russia. This, according to the State Department, is pressuring Russia to address the allegations Washington has been throwing at Russia for the past few years: “aggression in Ukraine, interference in other nations’ domestic affairs and abuses of human rights.”
“When and if we have sanctions to announce, we will do so,” it added. Even so, the measures would be primarily aimed against “non-Russian entities that are responsible for significant transactions with Russia’s defense and intelligence sector.”
The goal of the sanctions would be to deny Moscow the profits from selling Russian military and intelligence equipment, Nauert explained.
Her statement falls short of the expected “oligarchs list” outlined in CAATSA, which would have included “indices of corruption” and the net worth and known sources of income of the people named and their spouses, children, parents, and siblings. Any US assets, such as real estate, were also ordered to be listed, according to the New York Times.
The intent was to “name and shame” Russian oligarchs and send a message that “Putin’s aggression in terms of Russian interference in our elections will be very costly to them,” said Daniel Fried, a former assistant secretary of state who led the State Department Russia sanctions office, as quoted by USA Today.
Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said last week that Moscow regards the sanctions as “counterproductive and senseless.”
On Friday, the Trump administration announced sanctions against 21 individuals, including Russian energy minister Andrey Cherezov, as well as nine business entities.

If some relatives in the Northeast were dreaming of a high Christmas, we’ve got bad news. Santa and Mrs. Claus, or rather elderly couple Patrick and Barbara Jiron, were stopped by sheriff’s deputies in Nebraska, as York News-Times reports. Heading to Boston and Vermont from Northern California in their Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, the elderly couple crossed the center line, deputies say, and failed to signal. When stopped, the deputies smelled fresh marijuana. The driver consented to a search, which yielded 60 pounds of marijuana and some containers of THC concentrate in the back of the pickup. The couple said the weed was meant as “Christmas presents.”
That much pot would be worth about $ 300,000, according to the York County Sheriff Department. The couple faces felony charges, in part because they didn’t have the required drug tax stamp from the state’s Department of Revenue. Marijuana is illegal in Nebraska, though. Laws are weird like that. The 80-year-old husband has been jailed, but is out on bail, while the 70-year-old wife was not jailed, due to medical issues.
We should note that this bust could have been averted had the couple’s truck had lane-keep assist. The current Tacoma offers lane departure alert as standard as part of its Toyota Safety Sense P technology suite. It could have warned the driver they were crossing the centerline, while lane-keeping assist could have stopped it automatically. We know this sort of technology saves lives, but in this case, it could have saved Christmas, too. (We don’t condone breaking the law, of course. If you’re going to give someone a green Christmas, do it legally.)
Hey, at least it wasn’t a Ford Fusion this time.

Uber board member David Bonderman resigned from the company’s board on Tuesday after making a sexist comment during a company meeting earlier in the day.
Bonderman’s attempt at a joke, which played on a stereotype that women talk too much, came amid a discussion about the steps the ride-hailing company plans to take to address complaints about sexism and gender discrimination in its ranks. He apologized soon after making the statement, but seemed to recognize later that an apology wasn’t enough.
“Today at Uber’s all-hands meeting, I directed a comment to my colleague and friend Arianna Huffington that was careless, inappropriate, and inexcusable,” Bonderman said in a statement. “The comment came across in a way that was the opposite of what I intended, but I understand the destructive effect it had, and I take full responsibility for that.”
His resignation, first reported by The New York Times, will take effect Wednesday morning.
In a separate statement, board member Ariana Huffington thanked Bonderman for stepping down.
“I appreciate David doing the right thing for Uber at this time of critical cultural changes at the company,” she said.
Bonderman’s departure is only the latest bit of turmoil at Uber. Earlier on Tuesday, the company acknowledged that CEO Travis Kalanick will take a leave of absence, and it announced it will make wide-scale changes in an attempt to revamp its corporate culture.
Uber has been contending with a series of scandals since former engineer Susan Fowler published a blog post accusing the company of widespread gender discrimination and charging the company did nothing in response to her complaints that she was sexually harassed by a manager.
On Tuesday, Uber released to employees a report put together by former US Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder and his firm investigated the company’s workplace environment in response to Fowler’s complaints and came up with a list of recommendations for how Uber could improve its culture. The board was discussing those recommendations with employees when Bonderman made his comment.
During the presentation, board member Ariana Huffington announced Wan Ling Mortello would be joining Uber’s board, upping the representation of women there.
“There’s a lot of data that shows when there’s one woman on the board it’s much more likely that there will be a second woman on the board,” Huffington said, according to a recording of the meeting obtained by Yahoo Finance.
Bonderman responded by saying, “Actually, what it shows is that it’s much more likely to be more talking.”

The 36-year-old appeared oblivious as she hosted the ITV breakfast show and ended up revealing her underwear to viewers tuning in at home.
Former model Holly had worn a pale pink top paired with a similar-coloured pencil skirt, however under the bright studio lights her bloused ended up going sheer and her outfit ended up showing off her bra underneath.
Even before This Morning took to the airwaves, Holly shared her daily Instagram outfit snap and it appeared that the top was already transparent in it.
This is not the first time Holly has been left flashing a bit too much on This Morning, as last year a tight white skirt showed off her knickers.
A VPL – also known as Visible Panty Line – was impossible to miss as she tried to dodge the wet weather in London back in June.
She also ended up suffering a nip-slip when she presented children’s TV show Ministry of Mayhem and gave the audience an eyeful.
Unearthed footage shows the bubbly star dancing her way across the floor when she flashes her nipple live on TV.
Her energetic dance moves couldn’t handle her ample assets as her breast popped out of her strappy top.
Holly admitted the mishap taught her a valuable lesson to “always wear an earthquake-proof bra”.
“That was probably my most embarrassing moment on TV,” she once said.
It appears that it is advice she had heeded judging by her underwear on today’s show.
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10.30am.
More than 10,000 assault rifles, 400 howitzers, shells, grenades, and anti-aerial machine guns — likely intended for sale to terrorists and criminals — have been seized in a joint raid by Spanish police and Europol.
Video footage released by Europol on Tuesday shows the massive cache of weapons, which the Spanish National Police seized in Bilbao, Cantabria and Gerona in January as part of operation Portu, which was supported by Europol. The haul was so great it took weeks to catalogue.
The European policing agency said in a statement that there was a “significant risk” of the weapons “being acquired by organised crime groups and terrorists.”
The investigation stemmed from the weapons used in the terrorist attack on a Jewish museum in Brussels in 2014.

“Due to their characteristics, their calibre and their readiness for reactivation, the seized weapons had an easy journey in the black market and posed a significant risk of being acquired by organised crime groups and terrorists,” Europol said.
The stash contained deactivated firearms which were largely purchased legally, and were later reactivated. Firearms found at the scene were ready to be repaired and transformed back into working weapons.
Five people have been arrested and €80,000 ($ 85,000) seized along with the weapons, Spanish police reported.
The crime group was using a sports shop as a front for its illegal firearms distribution center. A workshop used to reactivate the firearms was also discovered, as well as equipment to create forged certificates of reactivation.

Last year, the US Department of Labor announced a new fiduciary rule, which would require investment advisers to put client interests above their own when it comes to overseeing retirement accounts.
But that decree may never see the light of day. President Donald Trump signed an executive order February 3 giving the new White House time to review the rule, which administration officials have indicated they aim to rescind.
Though Trump’s order has already received pushback, it’s still in the works, with a status update slated for March 10, CNBC reports.
The White House move was met with mixed reviews. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren took aim at the executive order, saying it would “make it easier for investment advisers to cheat you out of your retirement savings.”
However, finance industry executives say the fiduciary rule would have limited choices for investors. “We think it is a bad rule. It is a bad rule for consumers,” Gary Cohn, the former COO of Goldman Sachs who is now Trump’s chief economic adviser, told The Wall Street Journal. “This is like putting only healthy food on the menu, because unhealthy food tastes good but you still shouldn’t eat it because you might die younger.”
It’s important to remember that regardless, the fiduciary rule would only affect retirement accounts. Which means that for any other investments, not every financial adviser is required to always act in your best interest. Those not working to the fiduciary standard are held only to a suitability standard, meaning their advice must be suitable for the clients’ financial situation, but is not necessarily in their best interest. For instance, brokers operating under a suitability standard might let the commission attached to a product influence their recommendations.
“When you think about it, it’s amazing how much control financial advisers have over our lives,” writes Liz Davidson in her book, “What Your Financial Advisor Isn’t Telling You.” “Choose one who is actually a criminal, and it is possible to lose your entire nest egg.”
That being said, you shouldn’t just write off financial advisers completely.
“To completely eschew using an adviser can be as big a mistake as picking the wrong one,” Davidson says. “When you need financial advice, they can be a tremendous help — it’s just a matter of finding the best one for your situation (and being able to spot the Bernie Madoffs of the world before you hand over your life savings).”
To help you sniff out the good from the bad, we rounded up 15 questions to ask prospective advisers, from the Department of Labor’s guide for consumers on how to tell if your adviser is working in your best interest:

A fiduciary has a legal duty to act in your best interest and can be sued for taking actions otherwise.
Those not working to the fiduciary standard are held only to a suitability standard, meaning their advice must be suitable for the clients’ financial situation, but is not necessarily in their best interest.
“Very few financial advisers hold themselves out to be fiduciaries, and even fewer will sign an agreement that states, in no uncertain terms, that they are operating in a fiduciary capacity as your adviser,” Davidson explains. “However, if you can find one who is willing to do this, you are automatically putting yourself in a safer position.”
• If not (a fiduciary), why not?
• Are you willing to act as a fiduciary with a duty to act solely on my behalf?
• Are you willing to disclose to me any conflicts of interest that may interfere with your acting solely on my behalf?
• Are you willing to put this commitment in writing?
It’s important to be specific when asking about whether or not they’re a fiduciary, since many advisers are dually registered as a broker (only subject to the suitability standard) and a fiduciary. Dually registered advisers can switch roles, thereby blurring the broker-fiduciary line.
As Harold Pollack and Helaine Olen explain in their book, “The Index Card,” “You need to ask and ask quite specifically: Do you work to the fiduciary standard at all times? This last part, ‘at all times,’ is important. As the fine print on brokerage forms indicates, the fact that an adviser commits to a fiduciary standard for some of her dealings with you does not hold her to this standard in others.”
This is one of the most important questions to have in your back pocket. Unbeknownst to many, a lot of advisers earn commissions by recommending certain financial products and services to you.
“The problem is that this system incentivizes advisers to sell high-fee investments, annuities, and insurance,” Davidson explains. “High-fee mutual funds, annuities, and insurance policies typically perform worse than lower-fee options because the fees eat into your return.”
You’ll want to ask your adviser if they’re allowed to sell investments outside of what their employer offers, Davidson says: “If the answer is no, chances are that you should decide not to limit your financial success by working with these advisers. If the answer is yes, find out exactly how selling outside investments affects each adviser.” For example, will they get a lower commission for selling outside investments?
• Do you earn fees or commissions based on the number of products that I buy or the size of my investment?
• Will you earn a higher fee or other type of compensation if I invest in certain products you recommend or will you receive fees for services related to specific investment products?
• Will you provide a list of the fees and commissions you receive either directly from me or from other sources in writing?
“Financial planning requires proper training,” Davidson explains. “Like a surgeon who is not properly trained and prone to make mistakes, your financial adviser may simply not have the training, knowledge, or experience to deliver sound advice to you.”
Davidson recommends looking for an adviser with at least 10 years of experience in financial planning and who has a CFP (certified financial planner) designation, which is considered the “gold standard” for financial planning. To give you an idea of the training required for this designation, “the pass rate for the exam to become a CFP certificant is about the same as the pass rate on the bar exam that law school grads are required to take in order to practice law,” she explains.
Ask your adviser about their experience and certifications — and then verify it. Davidson recommends using www.finra.org: “Type your adviser’s name into the FINRA database and you’ll learn what securities licenses this person actually has and, even more important, whether or not any complaints, disciplinary actions, suspensions, or very frequent changes of employment appear on his or her record … You’ll want to see a completely clean record … Even a single complaint, and certainly any disciplinary action, is a major red flag.”
• Are you registered with the State, US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), or the CFP board?
• For how long? What is your experience?
• Who supervises you, or, are you a sole practitioner?
• If a sole practitioner, do you have professional liability insurance?
• Have you (or your firm) ever been disciplined? For what?
