David Schwimmer is bringing a heavy dose of American arrogance across the pond in Peacock’s new UK import Intelligence — but did this goofy workplace comedy earn a full-time gig on your watchlist?

Schwimmer stars as brash NSA agent Jerry Bernstein, who arrives in the UK to serve as a liaison with the British cyber crime division — a collection of geeky misfits including the eager-to-please Joseph (played by writer/creator Nick Mohammed), former hacker Tuva (Peaky Blinders‘ Gana Bayarsaikhan) and bedraggled cat lady Mary (Sally4Ever‘s Jane Stanness). Joseph spends his days snooping into Matthew McConaughey’s browsing history (“it’s lawn mowers, mainly”), so he’s excited to meet Jerry… but the new arrival is the very portrait of the ugly American, throwing his weight around and insulting everyone from the start. (“Do you have dwarfism in your family?” he asks the diminutive Joseph. “Well, you should check.”)

Jerry immediately barges in and tries to assert control of the whole team, much to the chagrin of by-the-book director Christine (The Crown‘s Sylvestra Le Touzel). When she bristles at his power play, he reassures her that “I think we can learn a lot from each other. Especially me.” Meanwhile, he adopts Joseph as his assistant/mascot, ordering him to investigate a mysterious stain in his new office and informing him that he “basically knows everything” and even “predicted 9/11” (!). “I want to raise morale so high, people can barely move,” he tells Joseph — which sounds kinda painful, but OK.

Christine attempts to put Jerry in his place, calling him a “privileged fool” and reminding him she’s in charge here. But he ignores her, leading the group in a series of bizarre team-building exercises while Christine is away. (One of them involves the employees groping each other with blindfolds on and talking about when they last had sex. Does the British government not have an HR department?) When Christine arrives, she orders everyone back to work, but Jerry insists they’re just having fun, prodding Christine to try a jelly bean from the enormous plastic jug he brought to work. She slaps away the one he tries to put in her mouth, but does try one, to her employees’ relief and applause. Maybe this can work after all? Yeah, probably not.

Piers Morgan, 54, was on hand to present today’s edition of Good Morning Britain alongside news anchor Charlotte Hawkins, 44, and resident health expert, Dr Hilary Jones, 66. Matt Hancock, 41, spoke with the presenters about the ongoing coronavirus outbreak hitting the UK and tried to give perspective on how the government was trying to prevent the spread. During the interview, however, the politician was left squirming as he clashed with the host on several occasions.

One of the main queries Morgan had was about whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson, 55, was going to “lockdown” the country as people continue to struggle with social distancing.

As the Health Secretary claimed the Government’s position had been the same all along, the host strongly disagreed.

Raging about the “herd immunity” plan which was suggested at the beginning of the outbreak before social distancing was implemented, the presenter claimed the politician was “insulting his intelligence”.

The host declared the stance had “dramatically changed” as he continued to cut off the politician who was trying to provide an answer.

Of a lockdown, Morgan asked: “Why is he [Johnson] not mandating it?

“Why is he not locking down the country, if that is now the strategy having pursued a different strategy two weeks ago, if that is the new strategy, lock the country down.”

Claiming the plan has been the same “all along”, Hancock added the measures have always been to “protect life and to make sure we stop the spread of this virus”.

The politician was then cut off as the host believed the Health Secretary was “insulting his intelligence” with regards to the changing policy.

Referring to the article in question, the host said: “Those present say it was quote, ‘Herd immunity, protect the economy and if that means some pensioners die, too bad.’

“Not a direct quote, a summation of Dominic Cummings’ view of the Government strategy and we know herd immunity was the strategy for the next two weeks and then dramatically, it changed. To actually the complete opposite.”

With the politician still on hand to answer questions, he could be seen squirming as Morgan told him: “So please don’t insult my intelligence by telling me we followed the same strategy.”

The politician did explain the scenes of people flocking to UK tourist destinations over the weekend were “damaging”.

“Over the weekend, I signed new laws to allow police to enforce the bans on pubs and clubs and restaurants.

“And as we’ve seen, the number of people not following advice is incredibly damaging to the effort to stop the spread of the virus.”

According to the latest figures, a total of 5,683 positive cases have been reported in the UK, with 281 deaths.

The Prime Minister is set to give a daily briefing later today when he will announce the Government’s stance on the coronavirus outbreak.

The top job at GRU, which scares the West so much, was vacant since the death of his predecessor in November.

Kostyukov, who used to be the acting head of the GRU, has now fully taken the reigns at the agency, a source told Tass. The assignment was reportedly made by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu in early December. However, news of it was only made public on Monday, again proving the high secrecy of GRU activities.

There has so far been no official announcement regarding Kostyukov’s new job. If reports are confirmed the 43-year-old will be the first Navy sailor to lead the agency since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Previous spy chief, Colonel General Igor Korobov, died on November 21 after what the Defense Ministry said was “a long and serious illness.” Media reports claimed that Korobov died from cancer.

He was the second head of the GRU to pass away in the space of just two years after Colonel General Igor Sergun died of heart attack outside Moscow in 2016. However, there was speculation in foreign media that Sergun was actually killed during a top secret mission in Lebanon.

New spy chief Kostyukov has played an important role in planning Russia’s operations in Syria. Last year, he was awarded the highest state honor, the Hero of Russia, for his “bravery and heroism.”

The man, who initially received Navy training, but joined the GRU after graduating from the Military Diplomatic Academy, was blacklisted by the US in 2016 along with other Russian officials.

The GRU has made headlines on numerous occasions in the West in recent years. The US, UK and some European nations have blamed the illusive agency of election meddling, carrying out cyberattacks as well as poisoning former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury this March.

Russia has repeatedly denied the claims, which were not supported by evidence.

Ironically, GRU isn’t even the agency’s actual name, but only the Cold War time abbreviation, by which the West remembers it. The secret service, now headed by Kostyukov, is officially called the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation or GU for short.

Speaking that the agency’s 100th birthday in November, Vladimir Putin suggested that its internationally-recognized old name should be brought back.

“It’s not clear where the word ‘intelligence’ disappeared [to]. Why don’t we go back to the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU),” the Russian president said.

Chicago P.D.‘s Season 6 premiere found the Intelligence unit fractured like never before. With Voight benched during the investigation into last May’s finale shooting, Antonio was put in charge. But Ruzek — who was upset that Antonio didn’t back up Voight’s story — didn’t show much respect for his new boss’ authority, disobeying his orders and even talking back.

That strained dynamic will continue in upcoming episodes, as “those two are not feeling each other right now,” showrunner Rick Eid says. “At the end of the day, they’re two really strong characters with different codes, and they’re clashing at the moment.”

The tension between Ruzek and Antonio “starts to level out a little bit,” star Patrick John Flueger, who plays the younger officer, previews. “Atwater pulls Ruzek aside and is like, “What’s your beef? You guys can disagree on how you approach the job, but at the end of the day, he deserves your respect.’ He outranks me, and he’s a really, really good cop, and he’s a good man. Even though we take different paths to getting the job done, he always gets the job done. It’ll smooth out, but it takes a little while to get there.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Voight made a deal with CPD Deputy Superintendent Katherine Brennan (The Brave‘s Anne Heche) after the surveillance footage of the shooting turned out to be “ambiguous,” per Brennan. She’ll help him if he supports her boss for mayor by solving cases in a hurry… or not in a hurry, depending on the circumstances. In response, Voight named his price: a letter of exoneration for Olinsky so his family can collect his pension.

Chicago PD RecapThe arrangement “will complicate the work that they do, because their agendas won’t always be in sync,” Eid notes. “[Brennan] has a political agenda, and Voight is probably the least political human being alive. He cares about getting the bad guy and making Chicago a safer place. Those two ideals will clash.”

And will the unit have any inkling that their sergeant made a secret deal that directly impacts their job? While actress Amy Morton (Platt) says “everyone gets affected in one way or another,” as of yet, “we haven’t really been privy to the dynamic between [Voight and Brennan],” actor Jesse Lee Soffer (Halstead) adds. “I think we know that she’s got him under the gun a little bit. Voight’s a pretty wily character, and he can get out of a lot of situations. We’ve seen him do it time and time again. So I think everyone’s trusting that there’s going to be some way for Voight to end up on top here.”
