In a now viral video, comedian Sandy Honig recorded herself uncontrollably vomiting around an Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield office park after the insurance company denied coverage for a procedure that would help alleviate her stomach-churning symptoms.
Honig, who suffers from partial paralysis of her stomach due to a condition called gastroparesis, cannot normally digest food and has been near-constantly nausated for the past three years since the onset of her symptoms. Almost anything she eats, she throws up.
"It's hard to get up in the morning when the first thing you have to do is drink a cup of water, and that makes you sick," Honig told Vice News.
A common treatment for the condition are Botox injections, which help patients more easily digest food by relaxing the part of the stomach connected to the small intestine. The $ 3,000 treatment provides relief for several months at a time.
After being denied coverage for the injections in January — Honig told NBC News Anthem determined they were "medically unnecessary" — Honig, who is a writer for Three Busy Debras on Adult Swim and HBO Max, found herself angry enough to act against the health insurance giant in the nearly 3-minute video.
"I mean, this video was just made from complete rage," she told Teen Vogue.
The clip shows Honig at an office park where she repeatedly vomits while discussing her plight and the insurance appeals process with passers-by. She attempted to show up directly to the Anthem offices, but was denied entry without an employee badge: "Even if I'm a member of the Anthem family?" Honig asks an employee in the video.
On camera in front of the Anthem office, Honig vomits into an envelope she joked contained her appeals letter to the insurance company — "relevant documentation," she called it — and seals it up. She told Vice News she did not actually send the envelope and her doctor mailed her real appeal letter.
In addition to denying her procedure, the company allegedly also called the police on Honig following the stunt.
"It was such a lovely surprise to get a visit from two men armed with guns and batons in my own home," Honig says in the video, showing two Los Angeles Police Department officers who arrived at her home to perform a wellness check on her.
Honig told Teen Vogue she originally thought the officers were there to ticket her for trespassing, but actually were called to perform the check to ensure she was not a danger to herself or others.
"It was very interesting," Honig told Teen Vogue. "I was playing with putting this in the video, but it's actually way too complicated — I don't have a concise way of explaining it, but what the cop was telling me was that if I were to harm myself, [the insurance company] could be liable because they had evidence that I was, you know, acting erratically. They were basically covering their own ass by calling the cops on me. It was just insane."
Representatives for Anthem did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but told NBC News the insurance company denied the Botox injections to "ensure Ms. Honig gets the right treatment for her particular condition."
"Our clinical team has carefully reviewed her case and our medical policies, and the existing medical evidence does not support the treatment she is requesting for her condition," Anthem told NBC News. "Therefore, it is not a covered benefit under the family's health plan."
"Health insurance is fucking made-up," Honig told Vice News.
A representative for Honig did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Brexit should not put Britons off booking a holiday next year, travel expert Simon Calder explained to ITV audiences on today’s This Morning show. Eamonn Holmes referred to the current worries circulating around Brexit and 2019 travel “project fear” but Calder reassured that the EU has said flights will continue, if if no Brexit deal is reached. “I would have no hesitation booking a package holiday,” Calder said on the show. “The worse that will happen is you will get your money back.” He pointed out that it could be helpful to visit proper travel agents for those who are worried.
What’s more, the current scare stories cold result in more bargains as people are dissuaded from travel.
However, Calder emphasised that package holidays are much safer than booking holiday elements separately as you’ll get your money back much more easily.
Holidaymakers may have to crave themselves for more airport queues as there might be “some kerfuffle in the the days after Brexit,” said Calder.
Britons will no longer be able to use the EU channel at the airport which travellers might be more aware of in bigger hubs.
This is because from 29 March, British passport will no longer be an EU document as they are now.
“There will be all kinds of implications,” warned Calder. For instance, travellers might be required to have three months validity left on their passport to travel. the expert added: “Ee just don’t know yet.”
From 2021, Britons will have to apply for a visa to go to mainland Europe, the European Commision has confirmed.
British citizens heading to the continent will need to complete an online form and pay €7 (£6) for a visa waiver which would last them three years.
The European travel information and authorisation scheme (ETIAS) will screen travellers in order to protect Europe’s borders from terrorists and people-smugglers.
ETIAS is modelled on the US ESTA scheme are the form should only take minutes to fill out.
Travellers should apply online for the ETIAS at least 72 hours before travel.
Calder also shared a top tip for travellers who have another passport, as well as their British one.
He told Irishman Holmes that to fast-track travel, he could leave the UK on his British passport and return on his Irish document.
Brexit will also affect the exchange rate, Calder told This Morning. “If a deal goes through then sterling will rise,” he said, “but if there is no deal it will fall a bit.”
Calder summed up the Brexit conundrum, saying “We’re giving back control and it’s all going to get quite complicated.”
Last week, Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson said a hard Brexit would be “disastrous” for Britons.
JACKSON LEWANGU looks up at the clouds scudding above the dry plains of northern Kenya. And, somewhere higher still, a satellite looks down on him. Since 2012 Mr Lewangu, who keeps goats and cattle, has bought insurance designed by the International Livestock Research Institute, based in Nairobi. The satellite monitors vegetation; when it is unusually scarce, he gets a payout. He can then buy food for his animals or pay a rancher for access to grazing land, without which his cows would die.
Insurance could bring peace of mind to Africa’s pastoralists. It could also help the continent’s crop farmers, whose fields are almost entirely rain-fed. But Mr Lewangu’s neighbours are unconvinced. The satellite gives false information, says one woman; there is no payout in good years, complains another. Such scepticism is typical. Although schemes have proliferated in the past decade, almost all are…

In September, a peculiar thing started happening at the offices of the immigrant advocacy group, Make the Road New York. Dozens of immigrants began asking to cancel their benefits because they were nervous. Earlier that week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had announced plans to treat certain public assistance programs, like Medicaid and food stamps, as “negative factors” on the visa and green card applications of legal immigrants. These men and women were prepared to give up their healthcare and other benefits, lest they risk being forced to leave the U.S.
Under the proposed regulation, the Trump administration aims to change “public charge” policies that determine how the use of public benefits would affect an immigrant’s ability to enter the U.S., obtain a green card or become a permanent resident. If the regulation is finalized, immigration officers could reject a visa application if they believed that person would be likely to enroll in non-emergency Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps) and Section 8 housing vouchers and other programs.
The current proposal, which is open for public comment until Dec. 10, has engendered fear among immigrants around the country. Many have stopped signing up for — or have actively disenrolled from — benefits programs, according to the American Public Health Association. And the effects of this proposition are likely to have further consequences, according to a November analysis by policy advisory group Manatt Health.
CHIP was not included in the original proposal, but DHS has requested public comment on whether it should be added to the mix. Proposed federal regulations must go through a public comment period before they are enacted as policy.
Providence worries about a “chilling effect” in which immigrants fear retribution from the government for receiving benefits they’re entitled to under law. “We want to fight back against the culture of fear this is creating,” says Ali Santore, group vice president of government and public affairs for nonprofit Catholic health care system, Providence St. Joseph Health. “We’re seeing immigrants terrified to sign up or re-enroll [for benefits], and these are legal immigrants,” she says. Satore also worries the panic will cause immigrants to disenroll from public assistance programs that aren’t included in the proposition at all. This is already beginning to happen in some parts of the country. According to a recent Migration Policy Institute (MPI) report, some immigrants have stopped using public libraries.
An estimated 13.2 million legal immigrants now enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP in the U.S. would potentially be impacted by the move. In addition to the nearly 1 million children at risk of being disenrolled from Medicaid, there are 6.7 million children on those programs living in a household with a non-American citizen. They could possibly lose coverage as well.
The Trump administration says it’s merely providing clarity to immigration laws going back centuries. “Under long-standing federal law, those seeking to immigrate to the United States must show they can support themselves financially,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in announcing the proposal. Reihan Salam, executive editor of the conservative National Review magazine, argued in a column earlier this year that the current public charge rules are “too lax.” The waitlist for family-sponsored green cards is long, Salam points out, and if some immigrants do not meet the new public charge standards, there are likely to be others who can meet the standards and will take their place. “There are millions of potential migrants from outside Europe and Canada,” Salam writes, “who are capable of supporting themselves without relying on safety-net benefits and refundable tax credits.”
Still, Satore and Providence argue that when policies put barriers in place for healthcare access, the outcome is negative for everyone. “We believe that access to healthcare is not only the right thing to do, it’s also the most economically responsible thing to do,” Satore says. When people don’t have insurance, she says, they resort to the most expensive part of the healthcare system: the emergency room. But if they have Medicaid they are more likely to take care of their health up front.
While the rule’s final wording and its start date remain undetermined, its fate almost certainly will be decided in court. The City of Baltimore recently filed a federal lawsuit challenging a similar State Department regulation, laying out the legal lines of attack — though many anxious immigrants aren’t waiting to see the result.

Life insurance is a fundamentally difficult product to sell; it requires people to think about their deaths without promising any immediate returns.

And, despite tech innovations and the development of personalized services in other areas of finance, life insurance remains largely unchanged.
Luckily, there is a small but growing pocket of insurtech startups looking to modernize it. These companies are finding ways to digitize life insurance to appeal to consumers — and they’re giving incumbents the opportunity to revamp traditional offerings, either by partnering with them or using their technology.
Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider’s premium research service, has forecasted the shifting landscape of life insurance in the The Future of Life Insurance report. Here are the key problems insurtechs are tackling:

The need for modernization in life insurance is clear: Overall sales are slowing and policy ownership is hitting record lows. And because it’s such a tightly-regulated space, innovation from incumbents has stagnated — but they’re not helpless. Consumer-focused and insurer-focused startups have emerged to offer new technologies and process improvements.
The Future of Life Insurance report from Business Insider Intelligence looks at the two main strategies life insurtechs are adopting to drive change in this market, for the benefit of both buyers and sellers. In full, the report discusses best practices incumbents and startups should adopt to steer clear of the risks attached to applying emerging technologies to such a tightly regulated product.
Insurtech startups will soon set new industry standards and consumer expectations around this complex product. That, in turn will serve as a catalyst for innovation among legacy players.
Companies included in this report: Ladder, Haven Life, Getsurance, Tomorrow, Fabric, Atidot, AllLife, Royal London, Polly, Life.io, Legal & General, Vitality, Discovery, John Hancock, Dai-ichi Life.

Car insurance is still one of the biggest expenditures that motorists face paying annually to keep their car on the road.
Policy prices differ massively between insurers and the overall cost can be impacted and influenced by a number of factors.
This includes your address, age, job title and whether or not you’ve made a claim in the past.
But can your social media output on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram affect your premium?
In 2016, a premium was intruded by car insurer Admiral which did quite this when it launched Firstcarquote.
It looked at trends in the posts on Facebook to evaluate personality traits of users.
However, the firm was forced to close the scheme pretty soon after it launched after it faced backlash, reports Which.
The consumer advice firm quizzed 20 insurers to find out whether or not they would use information found on your public social media profiles to influence your premium.
Only 13 insurers replied overall stating that they did not use this data in their calculations.
A spokesperson from Direct Line said to Which?: “We do not use social media data in our pricing or risk models.
“Our insurance premiums are calculated on a wide range of rating factors.
“The price generated is specific to an individual, based on all of the information provided, how likely a customer is to make a claim and our view of their risk.
“This is calculated when a customer first gets a quote with us and is reviewed on an annual basis thereafter when the policy is due for renewal.”
However, one caveat to this is that eight of the 13 insurers stated that they will use your public profile when verifying claims.
If your insurer believes that your claims could be fraudulent they could use publicly available posts to check the validity of a claim.
Similarly, private investigates could be hired to look at public information on your accounts.
One example where this occurred was back in 2016 when Axa found one of its motorists to be making a fraudulent claim after an incident.
A boxer was involved in a low-speed collision and claimed he suffered back and neck injuries.
However, it was later found by the firm and investigators that the boxer had not been to see a GP and had also made several posts about him doing various exercises.
He was forced to pay £13,046 in costs to the courts and was added to the Insurance Fraud Register.
A spokesperson for Axa said: “We will not look at social media to price our customers, however, we do use have rules governing how we use social media to tackle fraud.”
