Electronic music is all the rage these days, but the most high-tech of America’s Big Three guitar makers is proving that the acoustic guitar can keep up.
That’s no small feat: the basic idea of a soundbox joined to a fretboard with plucked strings providing musical notes has been around since the 1500s. In the US, the premium acoustic-guitar market is ruled by three companies, each with its own approach to the instrument.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Although we’ve seen most of the production Toyota Supra, albeit in race car form, we still haven’t seen the final interior. And most of the time, the prototype test drivers keep the interior well-covered. These new spy shots help give us a more complete picture of the interior, providing us a look at the instrument panel.
Unsurprisingly, the gauge cluster features big screens for vehicle information and for speed. It does appear to have a nice big analog tachometer square in the middle, though. That tachometer is also augmented by a digital readout of the rpm at the base of the cluster. To the right and left are more conventional illuminated gauges for fuel and temperature.
We can also see plenty of BMW influence inside, too. The buttons on the steering wheel are straight from the German automaker’s parts bin. The monostable shifter is also clearly a BMW-sourced part, but the shifter handle itself is shaped differently from the more sculpted BMW designs. The big screen for infotainment that we’ve seen previously also is present.
We should see the full production Supra within the year. It will have a twin-turbocharged inline-six courtesy of BMW. It won’t be available with a manual transmission. It will also be small and light, with a low center of gravity and even weight distribution.

The fate of Arianespace’s latest launch was in limbo for over an hour after the company detected an anomaly. Ariane 5 lost contact with its ground controllers around nine minutes after liftoff, and Arianespace chief Stephane Israel had to issue an apology with the promise to get to the bottom of what happened. Thankfully, things turned out just fine: its payload communications satellites, the SES 14 and the Al Yah 3, have successfully made it to orbit and resumed communication with their operators. That’s great news for NASA too, because it had a science instrument piggybacked on the SES 14 — the first time one of its science missions flew as a “hosted payload,” a term used for a module attached to a commercial satellite.
NASA’s Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) is a microwave-sized instrument designed to investigate the boundary between space and Earth’s upper atmosphere. The data it will send back from geostationary orbit about 22,000 miles away will help us better understand the boundary’s role in terrestrial and space weather. Elsayed Talaat, NASA’s heliophysics chief scientist, explained that “being on hosted commercial satellites gives… NASA a new cost-effective tool in [its] toolbox for doing science.”
While the space agency expects to continue building its own satellites for launch, being able to prove that going the hosted payload route works means its science programs now have more options to choose from. And that’s definitely a good thing, seeing as the agency is always the target of budget cuts. The fact that Ariane 5 also completed its mission despite the launch scare is also a good thing for Arianespace, since its rocket is scheduled to launch the James Webb Space Telescope in 2019.

I hate, hate, hate computers and phones/tablets on stage. To me, a Macbook sitting next to a keyboardist or percussionist is just asking for trouble. Computers freeze, apps crash and sometimes you forget to turn off notifications and now everyone in the audience knows you got a new Facebook message. And frankly, they’re not very “rock ‘n’ roll.” So imagine my surprise when, while using the Yamaha MX88 keyboard, I found myself launching the FM Essential companion app — on my iPhone!
The $ 1,299 (You’ll really only pay $ 999) MX88 is the latest member of Yamaha’s entry-level MX lineup. But the keyboard’s sounds and weighted key action are that of far more expensive synthesizers. The instrument ships with over 1,000 voices (instrument sounds) from the company’s more expensive Motif series of keyboards. Quantity is great, but quality is far more important for a musician and the MX88 delivers with its piano and organ recreations.
It’s also nice that the polyphonic instrument can handle 128 simultaneous notes. It allows you can layer sound after sound to the keys and never worry about losing any of the notes.
But if you insist on playing the synth with your fingers, the weighted keys are a delight for an instrument in this price range. The action is quick and gives the player more control over the dynamics of a note when the key is hit.

The controls on the keyboard are straight forward with a small display for voices and more complex control over the synth. The more readily used features like voice manipulation, keyboard splitting, and top level sound menus are all available via a knob or button on the face of the MX88. But there’s also that app.
The FM Essentials companion mobile app, on its surface, is an adequate facsimile of a synth with a tiny keyboard and various voices. It ships with drum loops so your creations have a back beat. But it’s when you plug it into the MX88 that you see the real value. With it, you can control the voices on the keyboard and manipulate them with the on-screen oscilloscope (a visual reference of the waveform). That’s where the fun comes in.
I was able to take normal voices, flip on the arpeggio, adjust the options like cut off, resonance, modulation and make them my own right in the app and much quicker than I could on the keyboard. Plus, once I was done with that, I could play music from my iPhone directly though the keyboard via the same USB port. So I could accompany something I had recorded earlier, or play along to my favorite song.

The only drawback is that you have to buy Apple’s $ 30 Lightning to USB camera adapter cable to get it to work. You can’t just plug into the device USB slot (which seems like where you would plug in your phone). Instead you have to use the host USB slot.
Whether or not I would use this setup live is still debatable. iPhone apps crash just as often as computer applications. But, it has made me a believer than when done correctly, connecting your instrument to a computer isn’t that horrible and in the case of the MX88, actually enhances the experience of an already wonderful synthesizer.

There’s no question that Pharrell Williams has had at least some fondness for technology (his Daft Punk collabs and gold-tinged smartphones were big clues), but now he’s taking that appreciation to Will.I.Am levels. Roli has revealed that Pharrell is not only becoming its Chief Creative Officer, but will invest in and take co-ownership of the modular instrument startup. He’ll have a vested interest in Roli’s success, in other words. The company hasn’t outlined the terms of the deal, but the superstar will help develop “revolutionary” digital instruments that are accessible and “iconic.”
The first output from the team-up is a Pharrell sound pack for Roli’s Noise app that lets you build tunes using the instruments and vocals of “Happy.” It’s not exactly a brand new piece of hardware, but it’s a start.
It’s easy to be a bit skeptical about the move: just ask BlackBerry how Alicia Keys’ Creative Director role panned out. However, it sounds like Pharrell will be more than a celebrity figurehead. While you probably won’t see him tinkering with prototypes in the engineering lab, he’s clearly interested in shaping Roli and its products. The larger question is whether or not his involvement will have a visible effect — you’ll want to keep an eye out for new controls and other thoughtful touches that you’d expect from a veteran artist.

Children find it easy to pick up a new language or learn to play music but as we age this ability declines dramatically making it harder.
But controlling a single brain chemical may help expand the window for learning language and music well into adulthood.
The findings could lead to new drugs to turn off this chemical so learning becomes a breeze.
Limiting the supply or the function of the neuromodulator adenosine in a brain structure called the auditory thalamus preserved the ability of adult mice to learn from passive exposure to sound much as young children learn from the soundscape of their world.
Dr Stanislav Zakharenko at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, said: “By disrupting adenosine signalling in the auditory thalamus, we have extended the window for auditory learning for the longest period yet reported, well into adulthood and far beyond the usual critical period in mice
“These results offer a promising strategy to extend the same window in humans to acquire language or musical ability by restoring plasticity in critical regions of the brain, possibly by developing drugs that selectively block adenosine activity.”
The auditory thalamus is the brain’s relay station where sound is collected and sent to the auditory cortex for processing.
The auditory thalamus and cortex rely on the neurotransmitter glutamate to communicate.
Adenosine reduces glutamate levels by inhibiting this neurotransmitter’s release.
The study also linked adenosine inhibition to reduced brain plasticity and the end of efficient auditory learning.
Researchers used a variety of methods to demonstrate that reducing adenosine or blocking the A1 adenosine receptor that is essential to the chemical messenger’s function changed how adult mice responded to sound.
Much as young children pick up language simply by hearing it spoken, they showed when adenosine was reduced or the A1 receptor blocked in the auditory thalamus, adult mice passively exposed to a tone responded to the same tone stronger when it was played weeks or months later.
These adult mice also gained an ability to distinguish between very close tones or tones with similar frequencies.
Mice usually lack this “perfect pitch” ability.
Researchers also showed the experimental mice retained the improved tone discrimination for weeks.
Dr Zakharenko added: “Taken together, the results demonstrated that the window for effective auditory learning re-opened in the mice and that they retained the information.”
The experimental compound FR194921 was used to selectively blocks the A1 receptor.
If paired with sound exposure, the compound rejuvenated auditory learning in adult mice.
Dr Zakharenko said: “That suggests it might be possible to extend the window in humans by targeting the A1 receptor for drug development.”
The study also linked the age-related decline in ease of auditory learning to an age-related increase in an enzyme (ecto-5′-nucleotidase) involved in adenosine production in the auditory thalamus.
Mature mice had higher levels than newborn mice of the enzyme and adenosine in the auditory thalamus.
Deletion of this enzyme returned the adenosine level in adult mice to the level of newborn mice.
Further research will look for compounds that target ecto-5′-nucleotidase as an alternative approach for extending the window of auditory learning.
The study was published in the journal Science.
LEARNING to play a musical instrument can protect the brain and ward off age-related decreases in mental health.![]()
Researchers hope the finding could lead to older people being taught to play instruments to halt dementia related conditions.
The study found that learning to play a sound on a musical instrument alters the brain waves in a way that improves a person’s listening and hearing skills over a short time frame.
This change in brain activity demonstrates its ability to rewire itself and compensate for injuries or diseases that may hamper a person’s capacity to perform tasks.
Dr Bernard Ross of the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in Toronto, Canada, said: “Music has been known to have beneficial effects on the brain, but there has been limited understanding into what about music makes a difference.

Musical sounds alter the brain activity which improves a person’s listening and hearing skills
Music has been known to have beneficial effects on the brain, but there has been limited understanding into what about music makes a difference.
“This is the first study demonstrating that learning the fine movement needed to reproduce a sound on an instrument changes the brain’s perception of sound in a way that is not seen when listening to music.“
This finding supports Dr Ross’ research using musical training to help stroke survivors rehabilitate motor movement in their upper bodies.
The latest study involved 32 young, healthy adults who had normal hearing and no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders.

The change in brain activity demonstrates its ability to rewire itself and compensate for diseases
Participant’s brain waves were first recorded while they listened to bell-like sounds from a Tibetan singing bowl.
After listening to the recording, half of the participants were given the Tibetan singing bowl and asked to recreate the same sounds and rhythm by striking it and the other half recreated the sound by pressing a key on a computer keypad.
Dr Ross said: “It has been hypothesized that the act of playing music requires many brain systems to work together, such as the hearing, motor and perception systems,.

Listening to music has been known to have beneficial effects on the brain, an expert claims
“This study was the first time we saw direct changes in the brain after one session, demonstrating that the action of creating music leads to a strong change in brain activity.”
The findings are published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
