Tesla’s recently announced layoffs may hurt its solar panel business particularly hard. Reuters sources and leaked documents have revealed that Tesla is closing roughly a dozen solar installation centers in nine states as part of the job cuts. There will still be about 60 facilities left afterward, but this would also end a Home Depot partnership that was reportedly responsible for half of Tesla’s sales in the category.

It’s not certain how many people have lost jobs as a result of the closures, although some of the affected people may relocate to other centers.

Tesla told Engadget in a statement that its energy offerings were “critical” to its vision for sustainable electricity, and noted that its stores were a valuable tool in selling its solar technology. It also rejected any notions that this might signal a shrinking business, saying that it expected the solar panel and storage battery business to be the “same size” as its core electric vehicle group. You can read the full statement below. Home Depot told Reuters its pact would last through the end of 2018, so it’s not an immediate withdrawal.

The company’s solar and battery groups have had some successes, including large-scale energy storage projects. However, there’s no question that the former SolarCity team hasn’t been doing as well as it could. Sales have fallen sharply since early 2016, and aren’t expected to start growing again until later in 2018. Tesla also stopped door-to-door sales in part because of the steep costs of marketing and selling its solar panels, and the Home Depot deal likely contributed to that financial headache by giving the retailer a cut of each sale. The facility shutdowns may represent Tesla’s acknowledgment that it needs to get this group’s costs under control, especially when it’s struggling to ramp up EV manufacturing at the same time.

“Our energy products are critical to our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy, and we continue to expect that Tesla’s solar and battery business will be the same size as automotive over the long term. One of the main reasons we acquired SolarCity was to use our Tesla stores to sell not only cars, but also Powerwall and Solar. Tesla stores have some of the highest foot traffic of any retail space in the country, so this presents a unique benefit that is demonstrated by the growing number of Tesla vehicle customers who are also purchasing energy products through our stores. Tesla is planning to close 13 or 14 solar installation locations that were set up by SolarCity before Tesla purchased the company in 2016. Tesla will also end its partnership with Home Depot at the end of the year.

The new information was first reported by Reuters, which obtained internal emails and documents detailing the closures. A Tesla spokesperson told Ars that the closures are part of the layoffs it announced in early June.

An official statement from the company contended that Tesla’s solar business is better served in its existing Tesla stores. “Tesla stores have some of the highest foot traffic of any retail space in the country, so this presents a unique benefit that is demonstrated by the growing number of Tesla vehicle customers who are also purchasing energy products through our stores,” the statement said.

As the price of solar panels has plunged, a strange thing has happened. The panels have gone from being a large fraction of installation costs to a relatively minor component. That means all the other things—permits, labor, supporting hardware, and so on—make up the bulk of the cost of putting panels on your roof. While these costs are going down as well, they’re not falling at nearly the same rate as the panels themselves.

All of which raises an intriguing question: if there’s a large fixed cost involved in getting panels on your roof, does it make sense to install more efficient panels, despite their higher costs? A collaboration between MIT researchers and people at solar power companies have answered this question with a very qualified “yes.” Critically, one of the qualifications is that they assume availability of a technology we haven’t developed yet.

Efficiency limits

Currently, thin-film solar panels have efficiency percentages in the teens, while silicon has reached the low 20s. While there’s some room for improvements in both of these technologies, progress is probably going to be incremental. There also exist some alternative technologies that have high material costs that aren’t likely to drop substantially any time soon. Beyond those, physics sets a hard cap on the maximum efficiency possible at 33 percent.

Technology allows you to experience art in a direct way by physically becoming part of the exhibition, and TeamLab is on the forefront of that movement. The Japanese art collective is at it again with a new exhibition at Melbourne’s NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) Triennial called Moving Creates Vortices and Vortices Create Movement. It’s a hypnotic melange of art, interactivity and spectacle that shows how humans impact their environment and vice-versa.

The technology is similar to what we’ve seen with Microsoft’s RoomAlive and from companies like Theoriz, using sensors and projectors, and crunching everything with a powerful computer. However, TeamLab’s execution is particularly effective and poetic.

When you move within the large space at the NGV (made larger by mirrors on the walls), the sensors track your location and send a signal to the computer. A computer generates a stream of particles that follow you via a projection on the floor. “The faster the person moves, the stronger the force is applied in that direction,” TeamLab explains in a press release. “If a person is not moving or there are no more people, no flow will occur and nothing will be present in the space.”

Once there’s enough people and movement, the streams form into vortexes, much like they would in nature. “In the ocean, complicated terrain such as an island produces flow velocity difference and a vortex is generated,” TeamLab says. “Vortices swirl up the carcasses of organisms sunk to the bottom of the ocean, producing nutritious seawater. This becomes a source of nutrition for plankton to grow and nourishes the sea life. Vortices therefore contribute to enriching the ocean.”

The artwork plays with the idea of the “butterfly effect,” in that seemingly small actions can become big effects down the road. The vortices can dramatically grow in size and force, their effect amplified by the mirrors and large space.

“Through their own movement, visitors realise that seemingly unrelated things affect the world in an uncontrollable way,” TeamLab founder Toshiyuko Inoko told Wallpaper. “We want to create an experience where people’s various behaviors create diverse flow velocity, generating huge vortices –- whether you intended to do so or not.”

The third quarter of 2017 has been an unusually slow one for the solar industry, according to a report from GTM Research released on Thursday. US solar installations fell to their lowest overall level since 2015, and residential and utility-scale solar projects fell quarter over quarter.

The only silver lining has been non-residential (largely commercial and community) solar installations, driven by developers in California, New York, and Massachusetts rushing to take advantage of state-level incentives, as well as installations in Minnesota boosted by Xcel Energy’s “community solar” program.

Overall, solar panel installations in Q3 decreased 51 percent from Q3 in 2016, says GTM Research.

Tesla has completed construction of a massive 100 megawatt, 129 MWh battery installation in South Australia. The new facility boasts the largest megawatt rating for any grid-connected battery installation in the world.

The project was completed less than two months after the contract was signed on September 29, putting it ahead of schedule. Musk had promised Australian authorities that he would complete the project in 100 days or the project would be free. Musk has said it would cost Tesla “$ 50 million or more” if the company failed to meet the deadline.

“Congratulations to the Tesla crew and South Australian authorities who worked so hard to get this manufactured and installed in record time!” Musk tweeted late on Wednesday night (Thursday in Australia).

El Tendedero/The Clothesline Project, D.C. will be on display through January 5, 2018.

Questions answered include “As a woman, where do you feel safe? Why?” and “Have you ever experienced violence or harassment? What happened?” Viewers share their responses on pink index cards, which are then hung up on a clothesline. From the exhibition press release: “As a result, Mayer transforms the clothesline, a traditionally feminine object, into a tool designed to engage the community and facilitate a dialogue around women’s experiences — including topics such as sexual harassment and domestic violence.”

Mayer’s interactive installation has been making the rounds in various communities and museums since 1978, collecting responses from women across the world. The D.C. version of the project is presented as part of the museum’s 2017–18 Women, Arts and Social Change programming. At a Jamestown, South Australia event on Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company was halfway done installing a 100MW/129MWh utility-grade battery bank near the site of the 100MW Hornsdale Wind Farm.

The battery bank will be the largest grid-tied system in the world when it’s complete. (Currently, the largest grid-tied system is a 30MW/120MWh facility built by AES Energy Storage in Southern California.) The project grew out of a Twitter bet between Australian software billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes and Telsa and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. In response to Cannon-Brookes’ incredulity about the speed that Tesla was claiming it could install grid-tied batteries, Musk promised to deliver a system to South Australia, a state that’s suffered debilitating blackouts in recent summers, “in 100 days or its free.”

But “100 days or it’s free” didn’t include time negotiating contracts, and after the bet Tesla went though a competitive bidding process with the state of South Australia for access to an A$ 150 million ($ 115 million) renewable energy fund to cover the cost of the batteries. Earlier this year, Musk gave estimates on Twitter that suggested a 129MWh system would cost $ 32.35 million before taxes and labor. Tesla won the bidding round and partnered with French company Neoen, the owner of the Hornsdale Wind Farm in the mid-north region of South Australia. Musk later commented that if Tesla missed its 100-day deadline, the company could stand to lose “$ 50 million or more.”
