Bitcoin prices have jumped back above $ 7,000 on global benchmark exchanges, but the latest moves appear small compared to overnight action in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe’s military stormed the capital city of Harare yesterday and took control of the state broadcaster.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has been placed under house arrest and may step down later this week.
That led to reports that bitcoin prices on a cryptocurrency exchange in Zimbabwe called Golix had skyrocketed past $ 13,000 — almost double the current value on other major exchanges such as Bitfinex.
Zimbabwe doesn’t have its own currency, with the US dollar and South African rand both accepted as legal tender since 2009 after hyperinflation left the previous currency worthless.
The Golix website showed settled bitcoin transactions ranged from $ 8,000 to as high as $ 13,499 over the last 24 hours, although its unclear whether those figures referred to settlements of at least one bitcoin, or a percentage of bitcoin.
In other words, if someone purchased 0.25 of a bitcoin at $ 13,499, the actual money paid would be around $ 3,375.
In addition, there was a wide gap between the bid and ask spread for bitcoin trades on the Golix website overnight, with the most drastic discrepancy showing a sell offer (ask) at $ 16,000 against a buy offer (bid) of just $ 5,000.
A short time ago, the website showed that bitcoin was trading at $ 10,250 — still around a $ 3,000 premium to current prices on larger exchanges.
According to a report in Quartz, the higher prices were most likely due to a lack of liquidity on the Golix exchange, which appears to be the only cryptocurrency website in Zimbabwe.
The Golix website says the exchange has processed transactions for 16.2878 bitcoin over the past 24 hours. As a comparison, larger exchanges in the US such as Bitfinex process tens of thousands over the same time-frame.
The Quartz report added that where countries don’t have large clearing exchanges, peer-to-peer transactions are more common.
The biggest global platform for peer-to-peer bitcoin trades is localbitcoins.com, and a search of brokers in Zimbabwe shows transactions more in line with the current global price of bitcoin.
So while at least one transaction may have been cleared at the impressively high price of $ 13,499, it doesn’t appear that a large number of Zimbaweans are paying top dollar in a mad scramble for cryptocurrency as military tanks roll through downtown Harare.
Here’s the price for bitcoin in US dollars a short time ago on the Bitfinex exchange, via Investing.com:

President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping during their meeting in Beijing on Thursday agreed to cooperate over the situation with North Korea. China and the US also signed cooperation agreements worth over $ 250 billion in energy, car manufacturing, and plane building.
However, the problem of North Korea has been a critical concern for Donald Trump during his Asia trip. During a news conference in Beijing, the US leader urged all countries to stop doing business with Pyongyang.
He has also released a dramatic video, in which he argues North Korea is now the world’s number one threat.
NoKo has interpreted America’s past restraint as weakness. This would be a fatal miscalculation. Do not underestimate us. AND DO NOT TRY US. pic.twitter.com/4llqLrNpK3

The Korean Peninsula crisis is also being closely watched by the sports world, with the Winter Olympics in South Korea to start soon. The British Olympic Association said it’s working on evacuation scenarios for its athletes, in case Pyongyang attacks the South during the games.
RT asked Ellis Cashmore whether there will be a significant impact on the next Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in the wake of tension with Pyongyang.
RT: Should more stringent measures be taken in Seoul in 2018? Do you think fewer people would want to buy tickets to the event?
EC: Every kind of fresh salvo from either Kim or from Trump is exacerbating tension. In other words, it ramps up this crisis. I am not sure, whether we’re calling it a crisis – not yet. But it soon will be, I’m sure none of this helps the athletes’ mood or there emotional, or psychological state – it increases the chances of instability during the games themselves. So none of this is helping.
What we also have to concede is that any sporting event nowadays, anywhere in the world – particularly major sporting events have security issues of one kind or another. It is simply not possible to stage a major event anywhere on the planet, where there is not a security threat.
In a sense, the Winter Olympics in South Korea is no different from any other tournament, any sport anywhere in the world. That is just the state of play in the 21 century. I am sure that the Olympic organizers are aware of this, and they have got every security measure in place; they probably have done as much as humanly and technologically possible to ensure the safety of the competitors and the spectators.
The big question is: is that going to convince the spectators? We know the players themselves, the competitors, the people who are participating for the medals – they will just say: “Yes – we’re going, we’re going to enter the games no matter what.” But will spectators stay away? There has been no news from the organizers at the moment. I mean you would expect them to say: “Ticket sale is going phenomenally well.” They have been unaffected by the political backstory, what’s going on at the moment. We might expect them to say that. My informed guess at the moment is that the ticket sales are slow, because of this very reason. People are hesitant; they are insecure; they are not confident that this will be the games uninterrupted by political concerns…
RT: Is there a real threat coming from North Korea?
EC: The first thing to point out is that – the Olympic bust that Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee, has already come out and tried to fire the first shot and say: “Everything is alright. It is under control. There is no threat.” He said that about five or six weeks ago.
The second point we should make here is: what else is he going to say realistically? He has no way of knowing if there is any genuine threat or not – the same as the rest of us. I suppose what we can think is – this isn’t exactly an encouragement to anybody who was thinking: “Shall I go to the Winter Olympics or not?” I am not sure if that is a crisis yet, but it is certainly a scare. This is not going to encourage them, let’s put it that way. It is not going to motivate anybody or fill them with confidence about going to South Korea at the moment. It is very, very close – of course, it shares a border with North Korea. And we know North Korea is currently under sanctions from the UN. It is under threat from Donald Trump who says he will bring ‘fire and fury’ to them. There is a political crisis brewing there. Whether the Olympics themselves will be affected? I was going to say – nobody knows, but I think one thing is certain – there will be an impact, the precise impact at this stage, I wouldn’t like to predict.
RT: France and Austria are both considering the possibility of staying away from the Olympics if the situation worsens. What’s your take on that? And how might the athletes react to that?
EC: It is quite easy for countries to say: “No, we believe that there is too much of a real threat for us to risk our athletes, it would be irresponsible for us.” We have to take into consideration that this would be an extraordinary unpopular decision from the athletes’ perspective. Athletes themselves over the years have been, I want to say indifferent to political crisis, but they have tended to ride them out.
In other words, their view has been – traditionally at least – that sport and politics are essentially separate. I know they are not, but this is the view from the athletes’ perspective. They would say: “We’ve worked; training and preparation for four or maybe be eight years” – maybe even longer. So they are working toward one goal. It is very difficult for them to say: “Well, there is a greater cause here. So we will sacrifice our own chances at an Olympic medal.” And they sacrifice their four or eight years of hard work. Athletes tend not to take that view – they tend to say: “Well, politics and sport should be separate, so we’re going to pursue what we want to pursue, and that is the gold medal.”
The latest North Korea tension is going to have quite a bit of impact on the games, says sports news correspondent for The Sunday Times John Goodbody. It has already done so, because of the failure to sell a large number of tickets, he added.
“So far only about 30 percent of the 1.1 million tickets have been sold for the Winter Games. There were only just under a hundred days to go before the opening ceremony. You can say that the number of tickets being sold is – to put it mildly – disappointing,” he told RT.
According to Goodbody, there are two reasons as to why it is disappointing.
“Firstly, there has been a slight drop in a number of foreigners wanting to come, partly because of the political situation in South Korea in the relations with North Korea. Secondly, more significantly – the lack of take-up on buying tickets by Korean residents. They have only bought 22 percent of the 700,000 which have been allocated for Korean residents,” he said.
However, the latter might change once the new high-speed rail opens from Seoul to Pyeongchang, he said.
In Goodbody’s view, it’s unlikely that any country will refuse to take part unless the situation drastically worsens.
He recalled that there had been occasions before when South Korea was staging major events when incidents happened just ahead of them.
“One was in 1988 when they staged the Summer Olympics. The year before North Korea shot down a South Korean passenger jet, killing all the people onboard,” he said. “Then in 2002 just before the FIFA World Cup, which is being staged in Russia next year – … when the World Cup was jointly staged by Japan and South Korea, there was incident with South Korea in the sea, when a South Korean warship was sunk.”
“So there is certainly the possibility of problems. The British Olympic Association with who I was with a fortnight ago, have said that they have obviously got emergency measures in place. But at the moment the intention is for all countries to attend,” he concluded.

Thursday morning, trading opened to a very modest gain, and closed out the day with the Dow up 56 points from its Wednesday close. One likely explanation for this uptick is that investors are buying back into the market as they seek good deals created by Wednesday’s drop.
These fluctuations come on the heels of a big, unpredictable week of news. After markets closed on Wednesday, the Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to investigate the connection between Russia and Donald Trump’s campaign, and another report shortly afterward revealed that the then-candidate Trump’s team knew that Michael Flynn, the former national security advisor, was under investigation when they hired him. Earlier, there were other stories, which included accusations that Trump revealed secret information to Russian officials during an Oval Office meeting closed to U.S. press and that Flynn tried to influence U.S. policies on Turkey while on the Turkish payroll but not registered as a lobbyist.
These stories, bringing as they do a good measure of political uncertainty, were bound to raise fears in a market where the prospect of Trump turning his pro-business agenda into policy has been credited for boosting prices of late. The so-called “Trump bump” has included an increase in the S&P 500 of more than 11 percent between November and May. And since the election, the Dow has jumped up nearly 14 percent. Recent political turbulence has serious implications for a market that, the theory goes, has been riding high on the prospect of that administration’s ability to pull off complicated legislative wrangling that would benefit business owners and investors. (It’s worth noting that for investment firms, volatility isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it can open up possibilities to bet on swings in the market.)
There are worrying international implications to all this, too. Overnight, Asian and Australian markets saw major selloffs, and news of the presidential scandals in Washington are possibly adding to upheaval in Brazil, which is dealing with a presidential scandal of its own that has sent the largest economy in Latin America into freefall before trading was halted as an emergency measure on Thursday.
Whether or not political upheaval might turn the Trump bump into a prolonged slump remains to be seen. But whichever direction things trend overall, if market swings are tied to the turbulence of Trump’s nearly four-month-old administration, it’s a fair bet that they may be in for more volatility going forward

The islands, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, were transferred by US under Japan’s administrative control in 1971, sparking a territorial dispute with China. Beijing has claimed ownership of the islands from the 14th century, while Tokyo argues it had ownership of the islands from 1895 until its surrender at the end of World War II.
Speaking in Tokyo on Saturday, at the end of a visit to East Asia, new US Defense Secretary James Mattis reaffirmed American commitment to Japan’s security. Mattis made clear that the United States opposes any “unilateral action” to “overthrow” Japan’s administration of the Senkaku Islands.
“I made clear that our long-standing policy on the Senkaku Islands stands – the US will continue to recognize Japanese administration of the islands and as such Article 5 of the US-Japan Security Treaty applies,” Mattis said in a press conference with Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada.
Under Article 5 of the treaty, the US agreed to defend territories under Japanese administration, which would include the disputed island chain in the East China Sea.
Beijing was quick to respond to Mattis’s comments, urging the US to tone down its rhetoric in regards to China in order to avoid instability to the region.
“The Diaoyu Island and its adjacent islets have been an inherent part of Chinese territory since ancient times, which is a unchangeable historical fact,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said following the US official’s statement.
The spokesman called the US-Japan security treaty a “product of the Cold War,” which should not harm China’s territorial “sovereignty and legitimate rights.”
“We urge the US side to take a responsible attitude, stop making wrong remarks on the issue involving the Diaoyu Islands sovereignty, and avoid making the issue more complicated and bringing instability to the regional situation,” the spokesman added, according to Xinhua.
China and the US seem to be heading on a collision course after President Donald Trump assumed power in the US. Trump entered office at the time of tense relations between Beijing and Washington.
Former President Barack Obama continued to agitate China as the US Navy continued to flex muscles in the disputed waters of the South and East China Seas. South Korean decision to place Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), allegedly to battle North Korean threat, has also added fuel to the fire.
Trump, however, exacerbated the bilateral relations even further and has threatened to oppose China on a number of fronts, from military build-up to monetary policy. He has even cast doubt on Washington’s long-standing commitment to the “one China policy,” which regards Taiwan as one with mainland China governed by Beijing. Trump’s adviser, Steve Bannon, even warned of a possible war between China and the US.
Speaking on Saturday, Mattis was also critical of China’s sovereignty claim in the South China Sea, where the US continues to sail under the principle of freedom of navigation. Mattis promised to continue that strategy.
To protect its rights, China has begun artificially expanding and militarizing its islands in the area. Since 2014 Beijing has equipped them with airfields, ports and weapons systems while warning the US warships and aircraft to stay away from the area.
“China has indisputable sovereignty over the relevant islands and reefs in the South China Sea and the adjacent waters. China will firmly safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea,” Kang told reporters Friday during a regular press briefing.
“We hope that the non-regional country can respect the common interests and aspirations of regional countries and help preserve a peaceful, stable and secure environment for the region since it serves the interests of all parties,” the spokesman said, referring to the US.
Kang also reminded Washington that it stands in strong opposition to the deployment of THAAD to South Korea, urging Washington to reconsider its decision.
“We believe that this move will undermine the strategic security interests of regional countries including China, disrupt regional strategic balance, and help in no way peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. We urge relevant parties to end the deployment and stop making more steps down the erroneous path,” Kang said.
Commenting on the development of a possible trade war between two states, China has appeared to be calm about possible future outcomes.
“As for the economic and trade issues between China and the US which have been much talked about by President Trump, we keep stressing that the economic and trade ties between the two countries did not grow to the current scale by accident. It is the result of the joint efforts of the two governments, peoples and business circles.” Kang said. “To maintain such a sound momentum serves the interests of the two sides.”
“China will never wage a currency war to seek advantage or to gain a competitive edge in trade. We have no intention of causing a currency war,” the spokesman stressed. “Long-term speaking, such war brings no benefit to China.”
