Judge Carol-Lisa Phillip ruled that Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes must allow the records to be inspected before 7 pm local time on Friday and determined she had violated public records law by failing to release the information to Scott’s attorneys.

US President Donald Trump, November 9, 2018

Scott filed suit in Broward and Palm Beach counties on Thursday. The first lawsuit, which he filed jointly with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, alleges Snipes was “unwilling to disclose records revealing how many electors voted, how many ballots have been canvassed, and how many ballots remain to be canvassed.”

At the same time, Scott ordered Florida law enforcement to investigate the elections offices in both counties, though he stopped short of alleging criminality or fraud in writing. Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokesperson Gretl Plessinger told CNN that the agency is not “actively investigating anything related to the election.”

While Scott looked to have won his Senate race by a secure margin on Tuesday night, late-counted ballots have cast doubt on his victory, leaving him within 0.25 percent of his opponent, Democrat Bill Nelson – which would trigger an automatic recount.

On Friday morning, Nelson filed a lawsuit of his own against Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner, calling for all mail-in votes and those “determined to involve a signature mismatch, be counted as valid votes,” alleging that the signature-matching process is discriminatory and a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection clause. The suit claims the “standardless, inconsistent, and unreliable signature matching process” is unfair to the young, the non-white and first-time voters.

Scott lashed out at his opponent, whose lawyer – Democrat heavyweight Marc Elias – has been attached to several other contested elections that went to recounts.

“Until today, the Nelson campaign has been working on voter fraud behind the scenes in secret,” Scott said in a statement. “With today’s filing, their desperation has driven them to ask the federal courts to allow voter fraud.”

The late-counted votes have also cast doubt on the results of the contest for Scott’s gubernatorial seat, which Republican Ron DeSantis appeared to have won. Democrat Andrew Gillum, who conceded Tuesday night, withdrew his concession on Thursday and said he was open to a recount.

In Florida, votes are subject to a machine recount if the margin of victory is under 0.5 percent and a hand recount if under 0.25 percent.

Broward County has become something of a Bermuda Triangle for votes under Snipes, whom a court found to have illegally destroyed ballots in 2016 while subject to a legal challenge from congressional candidate Tim Canova.

Florida itself has been a running joke in electoral politics ever since the 2000 recount that many believe handed the presidency to George W. Bush. The “hanging chads” at fault in that contest were found in multiple counties, including Broward and Palm Beach.

OPCW inspection in Russia amid Moscow’s calls for transparency in Skripal case https://briefnews.eu/opcw-inspection-in-russia-amid-moscows-calls-for-transparency-in-skripal-case/ https://briefnews.eu/opcw-inspection-in-russia-amid-moscows-calls-for-transparency-in-skripal-case/#respond Fri, 06 Apr 2018 13:01:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/opcw-inspection-in-russia-amid-moscows-calls-for-transparency-in-skripal-case/ As Moscow urges full transparency in the case of Sergei Skripal’s poisoning, experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) have paid a visit to Russia.

Inspectors arrived to monitor compliance with the organization’s rules last week. The checks were reported by the Russian Defense Ministry’s newspaper, Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star), on Friday. The report, however, didn’t elaborate on what exactly the OPCW inspectors were looking at, or where.

The news comes as Russia finds itself at the center of the blame game over the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia. They were discovered in a critical condition in Salisbury, affected by what the British government claims is a Russian-made nerve agent. The UK authorities swiftly accused the Russian state – an allegation which Moscow has repeatedly denied, while calling for a transparent joint investigation. Moscow’s suggestions were rebuffed by London as “perverse” and a “diversionary tactic.”

Earlier this week, scientists at the Porton Down chemical weapons lab near Salisbury said they were unable to trace the nerve agent used on the Skripals back to Russia. Shortly afterwards, the UK Foreign Office issued a statement that London stands by its “assessment” of Russia’s guilt.

On Wednesday, Russia’s proposal for a new, joint probe into the Skripal case was voted down by 15 members of the OPCW governing body in The Hague, with six supporting Russia and 17 abstaining. After the initiative failed, Russian Ambassador to the UK Alexander Yakovenko called on Britain to make public all material relevant to the investigation. He said that while Moscow has no evidence of the UK government’s role in the case, London’s refusal to cooperate and its campaign to blame Moscow leave Russia wondering about its motives.

Russia then called a UN Security Council session, where its envoy pointed out inconsistencies in the official UK narrative of the Skripal case, and reiterated Moscow’s stance that the use of chemical weapons by anyone anywhere is “inadmissible and must be investigated and punished.”

The accusations against Moscow have already resulted in the expulsion of over 100 Russian diplomats from a number of EU countries and their allies. The Russians were accused of being “undeclared intelligence officers.” The UK led the way with 23 expulsions, and the US sent home 60 and closed down the Russian consulate in Seattle. Most of the other participants expelled one to four people.

Moscow responded in kind, including the closure of the US consulate in St. Petersburg and the expulsion of 60 US diplomats. In addition to booting out 23 British diplomats, it gave London a month to cut its diplomatic presence in the country to the same number of Russian diplomatic staff in Britain.

Inspection woes sideline Ford's Chariot commuter van service in San Francisco https://briefnews.eu/inspection-woes-sideline-fords-chariot-commuter-van-service-in-san-francisco/ https://briefnews.eu/inspection-woes-sideline-fords-chariot-commuter-van-service-in-san-francisco/#respond Sat, 21 Oct 2017 00:08:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/inspection-woes-sideline-fords-chariot-commuter-van-service-in-san-francisco/

Chariot, an on-demand commuter van service owned by Ford, had to suspend it’s operations in San Francisco due to compliance issues with the California Highway Patrol, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

TechCrunch reports that the CHP found Chariot drivers without the correct Class B drivers licenses during three separate inspections. A re-inspection was conducted on Thursday, which is likely why service has been suspended. The company tweeted that it hoped to resolve the issue quickly.

Chariot, which also operates in other cities like Seattle, Austin, and New York City, has been looking to disrupt mass transit in San Francisco, an ambition somewhat thwarted this week when the city proposed rules to ban shuttles from driving along public transportation routes, said TechCrunch. While it’s possible that Chariot will resolve the current licensing problem quickly, hopefully the company will have learned that it can’t just operate without regard to local laws and regulations.

[00:00:00] This is the last video in our complete detailing series. It’s the part that, to pro detailers, is considered the most important, yet the most overlooked. I’ll show you the step-by-step process to complete a final inspection, on this episode of Autoblog Details. Once you think you’re done, I promise you, there’s gonna be a spot that needs to be fixed, touched up, wiped, or reapplied. It’s just a fact of detailing.

[00:00:30] Showing up to a car meet or presenting it to a customer for the first time with a tiny missed spot is devastating, especially after all the work you just did. As a professional detailer, spending hours and even days on a car, to have the reveal ruined by an easily fixed smudge or drip is soul crushing and embarrassing, because it’s just a lazy mistake. So don’t let it happen to you. Here’s a systematic approach to double checking your work. First, turn off the overhead lights and use a light pen or light stand as your only source of illumination.

[00:01:00] Any missed wax or non-dressed trim will pop out like a sore thumb. Unlike looking at deep scratches or for color matching, where the light is directly parallel with your eye line, looking for mistakes or smudges works best using an angle of a hundred to a hundred and twenty degrees, which is the angle between me, the paint, and the light stand. Or, if you don’t have a light stand, simply extend your arm outward and lean your head towards the paint until the angle is achieved. Changing you physical position from high to low also helps.

[00:01:30] That’s why having a jack system like this one here can be helpful for pro detailers. As the car goes up, you can stay low and see the spots you’ve missed on the lower part of the car without lying on your back. Removing a smudge doesn’t sound very difficult because it’s not. But all too often, the detailer uses the closest towel to his hand, and not the cleanest towel for the swipe. And then, boom, all the work you’ve done just when out the window. You’ve put a scratch in your flawless paint because you’ve mentally checked out. It happens all the time.

[00:02:00] So be sure to use a clean, final wipe towel, along with a spray wax lubricant to prevent an easily avoidable mistake. For wax or old compound residue stuck in seams or emblems, a short hair paint brush is a great option for pushing the hardened liquid out of the crevice. First, saturate or lubricate the emblem and gently poke the edges. Don’t brush or use a swiping motion. This will scratch the paint, and then you’re back to square one. Likewise compressed air can be your best friend here.

[00:02:30] Once the residue is loosened, drape a microfiber towel over the emblem and use the compressed air to flush out the gunk. The towel will be there to catch the debris and prevent it from hitting the paint. Finally, get in the car as if you were driving away. Open the driver’s side door, close the door, look in the mirror, pull the shifter all the way down. Did it reveal any leftover dirt you missed? Does the gauge cluster have smudges, or the vents have any dust? Does the seatbelt have a spot you missed as you’re pulling it out and buckling it?

[00:03:00] Go through this quick routine as your customer or your wife or your friend might when they go for their first drive to avoid these awkward, hey, you missed a spot jokes we hear all too often. If you’re presenting or showing a car, then a quick touch-up is always performed upon arrival at the show. Fresh tire shine, light dusting, and so on. If you’re presenting the car to a client or a friend, turning the car around in the garage so it’s facing outwards is nice icing on the cake when the garage door opens.

[00:03:30] Remember it’s good practice to put away all your tools, move the buckets, and have a clean space when doing the walk around with the owner or your friends. The last five percent of the detail is the hardest part of the job. It’s finding the spot you didn’t see for the last eight hours or two weeks or however long you’ve been working on it. This is the detail in detailing. The most frustrating part of this art is getting all the way to the end and not finishing strong. So don’t pack up before you’re done. My very last piece of advice is this. If you think you’re done, great, check it again. As always, thank you for watching, and I appreciate your support.

Our coverage of the Chevrolet Bolt EV has been extensive and includes naming it to our 2017 10Best Cars list and even validating that it indeed can achieve and even exceed its EPA-rated range of 238 miles on a charge. So far, to maximize EV credits, General Motors has limited Bolt sales to California and Oregon since the end of last year. However, the long-range electric Chevy should be in dealerships nationwide by September 2017. And sure enough, during our trip in and around Silicon Valley, up the coast on Highway 1, and through San Francisco, we saw a number of Bolts sprinkled into the seemingly endless sea of Teslas. Seriously, does anyone in northern California not own a Model S or X?

–

Since our first drive in a prototype through our most recent instrumented test, the Bolt has delivered on its lofty promises. Its combination of range and price ($ 37,495, or just under $ 30,000 after federal tax credits) places it in a uniquely compelling spot among EVs, and it’s dynamically sound as well. The Bolt has a surprisingly competent chassis, and scooting around town is effortless, with the instant torque of the electric motor helping to squirt the car from zero to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds. We also really like that you can activate the aggressive regenerative-braking function via a steering-wheel paddle and come all the way to a stop without using the brake pedal. After the novelty of driving the Bolt wears off—we admit it may take a while—some may wonder what other tech it has to offer.

–

With that in mind, we delved a little deeper into the infotainment system during this most recent drive. A 10.2-inch touchscreen, supplied by LG, is standard in both the base LT and the top-of-the-line Premier models. The interface is attractive, clean, colorful, and easy to use, with multiple themes and a reconfigurable layout. Controls can be handled via touch, voice, steering-wheel-mounted controls, a few redundant buttons, and a volume knob. Themes include Blue Sky, Sunset Orange, and a Black Eclipse night setting. We appreciate the included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, especially since there’s no built-in navigation system available (other than turn-by-turn directions if you subscribe to OnStar).

–

A five-pane home screen can be organized to prioritize specific information using prearranged layouts such as Eco, Family, and Standard as well as a free-form Custom setting. In the custom layout shown in the photo above, we chose to prioritize the energy detail panel. Here a pie chart, similar to one used in electrified GM products since the early days of the Volt, depicts the amount of battery energy deployed for driving, climate control, and battery conditioning since the last full charge.

–

Probing deeply into menus allows the user to set preferences such as automatically heating the seats during a remote start in cool weather, how long the lights stay on after exiting, and managing active-safety systems when so equipped. A graphic showing a Bolt rolling onto the screen as you switch between some of the menus looks cool the first time you see it, but it quickly grows tiresome, as you must wait for the animation to complete before the system will accept your next command. Beyond that, the touchscreen’s response times seem on par with those of most smartphones.

–

2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV

–

A persistent bar at the bottom of the screen houses controls for the climate-control system and heated seats as well as information dedicated specifically to energy consumption and battery life. Tapping the vibrant green Energy button brings up a menu that gives charging options, provides battery-charge status, and offers the driver a variety of energy settings. One of these information screens is an energy usage score based on four elements: outside temperature, climate-control and accessory settings, the severity of the terrain, and the driver’s technique. When the Bolt is switched off, a pop-up message identifies how many miles have been driven since the last full charge, the amount of energy used, and a prediction of how many miles of range remain.

–

The list of standard features on all Bolts includes Bluetooth connectivity, a backup camera, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot (with the first three months or 3 GB of data included), two USB ports and an auxiliary input in the center console, and a six-speaker audio system. A three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio also is included. For those considering the $ 4285 upgrade to the Premier trim, it adds technology such as a rearview-camera mirror that broadcasts a video feed of an unobstructed view to the back, plus a 360-degree surround-vision camera. An optional $ 485 Infotainment package—exclusive to the Premier—includes a seven-speaker Bose audio system, wireless charging, and two USB charging ports on the back of the center console for rear-seat passengers.

–

The Bolt packs a lot of tech content into a compact and affordable EV package, and very nearly all of it is well executed and highly useful. Add in the car’s satisfying dynamics, range, and value proposition, and it’s no wonder Chevy’s latest EV is so compelling.
