Netflix has apparently had enough of Insatiable, cancelling the Debby Ryan-led comedy after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

Insatiable, which dropped its second — and now final — season in October 2019, starred Ryan as Patty Bladell, a newly thin high school student who seeks revenge on her former bullies by becoming a pageant queen.

The dark comedy also starred Dallas Roberts (The Good Wife) as Bob Armstrong Jr., Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs) as Bob Barnard, Sarah Colonna (Shameless) as Angie Bladell, Erinn Westbrook (Awkward) as Magnolia Barnard, Kimmy Shields (Big Little Lies) as Nonnie Thompson, Michael Provost (All Rise) as Brick Armstrong, Irene Choi (Community) as Dixie Sinclair, Arden Myrin (Mad TV) as Regina Sinclair and Alyssa Milano (Charmed) as Coralee Huggins-Armstrong.

Despite Insatiable‘s buzzy first season — fueled largely by an online backlash against the show for appearing fatphobic — its second batch of episodes came and went with nary a peep. So it wasn’t a huge surprise when Milano shared the news of the show’s cancellation with her 3.6 million Twitter followers earlier this month:

With the first season of Netflix’s Insatiable stirring up so much controversy this weekend — the show has been accused of fat-shaming, among many other grievances — Team TVLine got to thinking: Which other shows have stuffed their main characters into ludicrous-looking fat suits?

There are the obvious ones, like Monica on Friends and Schmidt on New Girl, but they aren’t alone. Who could forget the fake pounds Mad Men packed on January Jones in Season 5? Or the crafty pillow-in-a-shirt technique employed by the likes of Once Upon a Time‘s Captain Hook (one version of him, anyway) or that time the Full House girls imagined their uncle Joey with an extra pillow of his own?

We even dug up Amy Adams’ oh-so-memorable appearance on The WB’s Smallville, in which she played a meta human who could absorb other people’s fat. You know, high school problems.

Friendly warning: This recap spoils the crap out of Insatiable‘s season finale. Binge before proceeding.

In a full-circle nod to the Netflix comedy’s premiere, Insatiable‘s season finale found a panicked Patty placing a last-minute, life-saving phone call to a suicidal Bob. But this time around, their situations had changed quite a bit.

Following her own bungled kidnapping attempt, Patty wound up trapped in the the wiener mobile, courtesy of Roxy and a fully unhinged Stella Rose. She eventually broke free from the truck — and from the hot dog costume after taking three arrows to the back like a champ — but an ill-timed run-in with Roxy landed her back in her cage, this time with handcuffs.

That’s when it hit her: “Bad things would only keep happening to me if I thought that’s what I deserved. I wasn’t a loser when I was fat, and I wasn’t a loser now. I was a winner, and winners win. Period.” Sure, it wasn’t the most eloquent inner monologue, but the sentiment was there, giving Patty the inspiration she needed to crisco herself out of the cuffs. (“Stella Rose was only half right: Food had been my only friend. But now, it saved my life.”)

Meanwhile… Coralee and the Bobs finally got down to business, giving us the threesome I never knew I needed until it was unfolding before my very eyes. And no one enjoyed it more than Bob Armstrong, who wondered, “Could the three of us be happy together?” An unfortunate intrusion cut the trio’s evening short, but Bob remained steadfast in his mission to make that threesome happen, convincing Coralee that they can be happy in a thruple. And there was something strangely beautiful about Coralee’s assessment of the whole encounter: “It was weird and crazy. And there were a lot of arms and legs and beards. … I loved it. Maybe it was everything I never knew I always wanted.” Honestly, she took the words right out of my mouth.

Unfortunately, Bob didn’t exactly get confirmation from Barnard about the whole “thruple” thing — a rookie mistake for a literal attorney — and was surprised to learn he really wasn’t that into it. “I never agreed to a relationship,” he explained. “I just thought the three of us would have sex sometimes so [Coralee] wouldn’t feel left out.” By staying with Bob, even if it meant losing out on a major boost in his mayoral campaign, Barnard made his choice clear. It was now time for Bob to do the same.

Speaking of grand romantic gestures, Patty wasn’t super thrilled to discover that Christian had roofied, kidnapped and stuffed Magnolia in the trunk of his car. “You said you wanted to be a winner, and winner’s win at any cost,” he reminded Patty when she arrived on the scene. But she wasn’t about to, as Christian suggested, “be the demon,” so when Magnolia woke up wondering what the [expletive] was going on, Patty set her free and turned the crowbar on Christian. Something about his aggressive final words (“You’re a bad person!”) did not sit well with Patty, causing her to beat him to death while screaming “I’m a good person!” until she was literally red in the face… with his blood.

And that’s where Patty’s second fateful phone call came in: Just as Bob was about to blow his brains out (again!), she called to ask for a favor. And he was all too happy to help her out, saying, “I’ve never much believed in destiny, but I’m starting to think that you and I — we’re fated. You saved my life twice. Now, I am going to save yours.”

But destiny wasn’t about to let Bob and Patty off so easily: Not only did Christian’s car fail to fully sink into the lake (d’oh!), but Patty also informed Bob that Christian wasn’t the only person she killed that night. R.I.P., Stella Rose!

Given that this recap began with a spoiler warning, I’m assuming you either [1] watched the whole season and would like to discuss it, or [2] gave up along the way and decided to find out how it all ends, or possibly [3] didn’t notice the big, bold disclaimer at all. Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why was a phenomenon for the streaming service, starting conversations about bullying, rape and teen suicide, as well as complaints that it was glamorizing suicide. Season two premiered this year to less of a divided reaction and more just agreement that it was unnecessary and even more problematic. Nevertheless, Netflix greenlit a third season, which Vice President of Original Programming Cindy Holland said is currently being written.

Meanwhile, when it comes to Netflix’s more recent controversial series Insatiable, which has been criticized for fat shaming, they don’t seem to be worried about the backlash and think the full series will clear up some of the initial concerns viewers have had.

13 Reasons Why Complaints Have Been Heard

“We’ve heard Brian Yorkey and the writers’ plan for this season and they’ve gone off to write it,” Holland said.

In the first season, Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) commits suicide and sends a set of 13 audio tapes to her classmates to explain why she ended it. Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) is the audience’s proxy listening to each hour of Hannah’s story. By the end of season one, the audience learned the reasons why Hannah felt she could not go on, and the crimes various classmates committed against her.

The second season dealt with a trial following Hannah’s death when her mother (Kate Walsh) sues the school. We learn more about other students as they testify, and there is a series of mysterious polaroids floating around. Hannah appears in flashbacks and as a vision who talks to Clay. The story incorporated even more hot button topics like school shootings in the second season.

However, critics felt the second season exploited the first by dragging it out through a trial that strained to provide new information. Most felt it was obvious the story had naturally concluded in one season, and many felt the school shooting was handled even worse than the suicide. Holland said Yorkey has heard those complaints and is very mindful of them.

“Well, look, it’s a controversial show from the beginning,” Holland said. “I think Brian felt very strongly about the topics covered in season two. He is always taking feedback from fans and from the community and seeking to be mindful of it in his work.”

Insatiable Stirs Up Controversy Too

Netflix is facing another backlash on a show that hasn’t even premiered yet. The first trailer for Insatiable led to criticism of fat shaming. Debby Ryan plays a high school girl who loses 90 pounds when her jaw is wired shut. She enters beauty pageants and seeks revenge on the bullies who picked on her when she was overweight.

Co-star Alyssa Milano came to the show’s defense amidst the controversy, and now Holland has also defended the show to some extent. Holland was not directly involved in the creation of Insatiable but believes the show will prove these criticisms wrong.

“What I do know, Lauren Gussis, the creator, felt very strongly about exploring these issues based on her own experiences, but in a satirical over the top way,” Holland said. “Ultimately, the message of the show is that what’s most important is that you feel comfortable within yourself. Fat shaming itself, that criticism is embedded with in the DNA of the show.”

Insatiable premieres August 10 while 13 Reasons Why season three is expected to arrive in 2019.

Netflix on Thursday released the first full-length trailer for Insatiable. The raunchy new series (which was developed by, but ultimately passed on by The CW) follows Patty (Jessie‘s Debby Ryan), a bullied teen who’s out to exact revenge on her tormentors following a life-changing transformation. Dissatisfied civil lawyer-turned-beauty pageant coach Bob Armstrong (The Walking Dead‘s Dallas Roberts) takes Patty under his wing — first as a legal client, then as a pageant contestant — unaware just how far she’s willing to go to hurt those who have wronged her.

The Insatiable cast also includes Alyssa Milano (Charmed) as Bob’s wife Coralee and Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs) as Bob’s pageant-dad nemesis Barnum.

The cast of The CW’s Insatiable just got a little more Charmed.

Alyssa Milano has signed on to play a recurring role in the beauty pageant-themed drama pilot, according to a report from our sister site Deadline. Disney Channel grad Debby Ryan stars as a vengeance-minded teen who enters the world of beauty pageants with the help of lawyer-turned-pageant coach Bob (The Walking Dead alum Dallas Roberts). Milano will play Bob’s wife Coralee, who’s eager to climb each and every rung of the social ladder. (The role is a “major recurring” one, per Deadline.)

We last saw Milano acting on the small screen in ABC’s summer soap Mistresses, which she ditched in 2014 after just two seasons. But she’s a true TV veteran, dating back to her days as Tony’s daughter Samantha on the ’80s sitcom Who’s the Boss?. Milano also spent eight seasons as sister witch Phoebe on The WB’s Charmed, which wrapped up in 2006.
