If you like spending time outdoors with the warmth of a wood-burning fire, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the problem smoke can pose. It can turn seats into a lottery system when the wind changes or see you all sitting in a half-moon shape like you’re filming a reality TV show since nobody wants to spend the evening participating from behind a hazy curtain.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Lytro
A report from TechCrunch claims that Google is going to buy the camera company Lytro for “around 40 million dollars.” Lytro is best known for creating an innovative “Light field camera,” but the company has lately pivoted to professional camera technology for filmmaking and capturing VR video.
You might remember the first Lytro camera, which came in a crazy “tube” form factor with a lens at one end and a 1.5-inch touchscreen on the other. The tube was full of lenses and a special “Light Field Sensor” that would capture images as light-field data rather than a grid of pixels. The benefit was that you could just take a picture without worrying about the focus, and you could later selectively focus the image however you wanted. The downside is that you needed a much denser CMOS sensor to capture a high megapixel image. In 2012, when the camera came out, Lytro could compute all this light-field data down to only a 1MP image.

Lego
2016 was a big year for the Danish toy-maker, whose revenues rose by 6% and hit the highest level in its 85 year-long history. 2017, in comparison, has been a bit of slump with the “Lego Ninjago” movie opening to a lukewarm response. However, the brand still makes it to the list for pioneering change and pushing for inclusivity. This month, Lego released its new “Women of NASA” toy set modeled after four famous women from the U.S. space agency who are scientists, engineers, astronauts, and entrepreneurs. It took just a few days for the product to rise to the top of Amazon’s list of best-selling toys.
Farmer’s
Farmers Insurance has always had a knack for producing quirky ads that highlight all the bizarre situations that people file insurance claims based on. But this year, the company took things a step further under Linton, finding out-of-the-box ways to insert itself into culturally relevant conversations of its consumers. This includes the brand’s first ever 360-degree virtual experience with the the Halloween-themed “Stranger Claims” campaign as well as a broader effort to incorporate middle America in its creative and strategy.
Twitter
The former American Express executive has a tough assignment. Making Twitter accessible to consumers who still don’t quite speak in 280 characters or understand insider lingo like “@ mentions.” Despite that ongoing challenge, Twitter has never been more influential. Under Berland’s leadership, Twitter has focused on a simple message: it’s what’s happening in the world.

HP
Lucio has been HP’s global chief marketing and communications officer since 2015 and is responsible for branding, global communications, demand generation as well as strategic events. Under Lucio’s leadership, HP has sought to reestablish a more emotional connection between the brand and its consumers. But over the past one year, a bigger focus for the brand has been addressing the industry’s diversity challenges. After demanding that its agencies move the needle on the number of women in the teams servicing the brand last year, this year, HP turned its attention to minorities.
Hulu
Campbell joined the streaming upstart this summer, and saw the rollout of Hulu’s first national ad campaign in five years featuring a celebrity spokesperson this past September. “For the Audience” featured Anna Kendrick and celebrated the service’s new look and feel in four TV commercials aired nationally. The company also scaled new, uncharted heights with teh dark original series “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Hulu not only swept numerous awards at the Emmy’s, but went home with the top honors — the first time that a streaming service took the Best Series award.
Sprint
Solé hit the ground running when he took over as Sprint’s CMO, launching the “That Wireless Guy” campaign during the NBA Finals, snatching up Paul Marcarelli, the face of competitor Verizon’s ads. But this year Sprint created waves when it followed in the footsteps of brands like Allstate, Stubhub, and Unilever, taking digital ad buying in-house.

Kickstarter has propelled thousands of products from pipe dreams to real objects that you can actually buy. Some of the fully funded projects have incredible success and become household names like Oculus, Pebble, and Cards Against Humanity — others fail or flame out.
We’ve waded through the many successful Kickstarter products to find the ones you should actually buy for your loved ones as gifts this holiday season. We’ve tried many of these products, and the ones we’ve never used are recommended by actual buyers and some expert reviewers.
The best part about these gifts is that they’re unique — you’re not buying boring socks or something that’s available at every mall in America. These are innovative products from inventors the world over. Read on to see which of our favorite Kickstarter products will be the perfect gifts for your loved ones.
Don’t know what to buy everyone on your list? Check out all of our great holiday gift guides on Insider Picks.
Boie
Give the gift of clean teeth this holiday season with an innovative toothbrush. Boie started out on Kickstarter in June 2016 with special rubber-like toothbrushes that promise to give you a healthier, cleaner mouth.
The rubbery bristles are less abrasive on your enamel and gums, BPA and Phthalate-free, and have silver in them to kill bacteria on contact. We tried this toothbrush and loved it.
Fuse Chicken
Everyone who’s ever owned an iPhone knows that Apple’s cables do not hold up over time. They rip, break, and fray until we’re worried we’ll start a fire when we plug them in. Save yourself the agony and get Fuse Chicken’s Titan Lightning cable instead. This thing is so strong it can survive a chainsaw or dog bite.
Fuse Chicken started out on Kickstarter with a smaller cable that also acted as a dock because the wire is so stiff. We recommend the lightning cable instead of the original because we’ve also tested it and put it in our buying guide to the best lightning cables.
Soma
Way back in 2012, Soma introduced a sustainable water filter and glass pitcher on Kickstarter. Fast-forward years later and Soma has several products, including this Sustainable Pitcher & Plant-Based Water Filter, which holds six cups and has a cute wooden handle.
The filter is made from 100% compostable materials like all-natural Malaysian coconut shells, vegan silk, and food-based PLA plastic. We think it’s a great gift for your eco-friendly loved ones.

Diesel cars future could be preserved thanks to a new technology
Diesel cars have been condemned since the revelation that they create a lot of noxious emissions.
British drivers were encouraged to buy dieselcars in 2001 as they were thought to be more efficient and they, typically, emit less CO2 emissions.
Noxious emissions, however, can cause heart disease, strokes and even lung cancer.
Many countries including the UK is introducing measures to ban these vehicles and impose restrictions or taxes to reduce the use of these cars.
However, Continental could have found a solution to this issue.
The component supplier has developed a 2.0-litre VW Golf Mk7 GTD which emits 60 per cent less NOx than a standard car.
In addition to this, the vehicle’s fuel consumption improved by four per cent and the CO2 emissions were also reduced.
“The diesel engine will continue to play an important role in meeting mobility needs for the foreseeable future,” says José Avila, President of the Powertrain Division and Member of the Executive Board of Continental.
“So it is vital for us to develop the technology to support extremely low-pollutant diesel operation.”
In other words we have resolved a classic conflict of objectives in diesel engine development
Engineers at Continental implemented the clean diesel system in a number of stages.
Firstly they replaced the standard injection system with Continual’’s PCRs5 piezo common rail injection system, which operators with maximum injection pressures of 2,500bar
With the help of highly dynamic valve timing it is possible to perform multiple, very closely spaced and very precisely metered injections per cycle.
This allows a minute amount of fuel to be injected after the combustion event.
CONTINENTAL
A fuel saving electric heatable catalytic converter on 48 V basis
The fuel only ignites when it reaches the catalyst, which therefore accelerates the process of heating it up..
Catalysts or catalytic converters are what is used on diesel cars to convert nitrogen oxide emissions
These systems, however, only operate at certain temperatures and are typically functional on motorways or highways but are less effective in stop/star urban driving environment.
Tests show that this single measure – post-injection – can cut the SCR catalyst light-off time by around eight minutes, resulting in a reduction in cumulative nitrogen oxide emissions under the future WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light-duty Test Procedure) driving cycle of 37 percent.
CONTINENTAL
The 48 volt electric machine with integrated inverter
Due to this, however, there would be an increase in fuel consumption which is why a 48 Volt Hybrid System was introduce.
The 15kW system allows regenerative braking but can also assist in the internal combustion engine in short, sharp bursts of acceleration.
This is said to reduce peaks in nitrogen oxide emissions that are a feature of diesel engines under sudden, heavy throttle acceleration.
The 48 Volt system can in total reduce NOx emissions by a further three per cent.
A further reduction is achieved by the uses of a close-couple electrical heated catalyst (EMICAT) which brings the other downstream-minted catalyst up to operating temperature within 30-40 seconds.
This allows it so start converting NOx but also keep the catalyst at operating temperate in all driving scenarios, where it would usually cool down in slow traffic.
Additionally the connected Energy Management (cEM) and Traffic Light Assist can also be used to slash emissions.
The beauty of ‘connected Energy Management’ is that we can implement a more energy-efficient driving strategy simply by using an improved database,” says Dr. Oliver Maiwald, Head of Technology & Innovation with Continental’s Powertrain Division.
“When the cEM control unit is aware of the upcoming route (thanks to the navigation system or learning algorithms), it can decide in advance when the vehicle should coast and when it is best for it to recuperate braking energy, thereby saving fuel and emissions,” says Maiwald.
The TLA predicts when the next traffic light will be on red and can use this information to improve coasting, recuperation and braking management.
The advancement in diesel engines made by Continental was revealed earlier this year at the 2017 Vienna Motor Symposium.
“In other words we have resolved a classic conflict of objectives in diesel engine development,” says José Avila, “showing that a clean diesel engine with emissions well within the legal limits doesn’t have to consume more fuel.”
Its products are so popular and so ubiquitous, that you might find yourself in a friend’s home sitting on a sofa that is very similar to your own, looking at a bookcase that matches yours and eating with very familiar looking cutlery. IKEA created a reasonably priced way for customers to express themselves at home, and while it may also have helped build a world of indentikit interiors, it opened consumers to what was otherwise expensive design.
As a product design specialist I applaud IKEA for how they have developed their business and invested in design to bring great products to the masses, including the use of materials to drive down prices – look inside one of their coffee tables and you’ll find a hollow core supported with card.
IKEA’s trades on the idea of family connections and aims for an emotional connection with customers. Instead of relying on numbers, for example, products are named after Scandinavian islands, names of people, birds and berries.
They continue to innovate in materials and production techniques which drive prices lower and lower. When the first UK store opened in 1987 (the company is celebrating its 30th British birthday) the cost of a loaf of bread was around 40p, and the classic “Lack” coffee table retailed at £18. Today, three decades on, that same table costs £14.
IKEA are widely considered as the “kings of flat pack furniture,” having cleverly exploited the potential of DIY assembly. Being able to visit a store, pick a wardrobe, chuck the cleverly packaged parts into the boot and drive home proved to a very popular approach, avoiding waiting weeks for delivery and simple – even if the accompanying instructions aren’t always as simple as they look. Social media is full of insights about IKEA-instigated arguments over how to construct furniture (or even just trying to navigate the stores’ pathways). But the company remains highly thought of.

IKEA’s Scandinavian roots and design DNA made it stand out when it arrived in the UK (it was already well established in Germany, France, Japan and Australia).
Along with Habitat, IKEA spearheaded a clear departure from chintz and overly decorative furniture and homeware. The new shopping experience of choosing from “rooms” set up with IKEA goods excited customers who came from far and wide to visit the distinctive blue and yellow box-like stores.
IKEA’s range of products has expanded and evolved in the last 30 years but some items like the famous Billy bookcase, continue to sell as they have done for decades. The Billy is a beautifully simple product that can be transformed with hundreds of options, whether you want to change the colors, add doors, or expand the size of your collection.
The popularity of IKEA means so many people have the same furniture, bedding and accessories in their homes. But it also means a lack of individualism in the very places we like to think most reflect our personalities. Nevertheless, some aim to customize: “IKEA hackers” turn colanders into lamps or shelves into headboards, producing unique pieces from mass produced products.
IKEA
IKEA itself has not become lazy or complacent when it comes to design.
The PS 2014 pendant lamp, one of their most famous recent additions, is an engineering masterpiece.
Closed, the lamp forms a white sphere with a jigsaw style pattern. But with the simple pull of a string the sphere opens, revealing its interior copper colour and increasing the brightness of the light emitted. It works beautifully and offers a great user experience. It is something to show off, and a real talking point.
Other parts of its range demonstrate great Scandinavian design at a much higher price point.
In my own home, I have a Malm bed, assorted cushions, candles, bedding and cutlery – simple, stylish and good quality. And they didn’t cost the earth. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t own at least one IKEA product. From its humble and fitting beginnings on a kitchen table in Sweden in 1943, IKEA has transformed the modern design world.

The GOP has come up with a new idea for paying for the massive tax cuts Trump has promised — steal from American’s retirement savings.
It’s a new, innovative way to steal from the future that is even less complicated than the old way.
The GOP wants to cap the amount of money you can put into a traditional, tax-deferred 401(k) account, or IRA, at $ 2,4000. After that you’ll be forced to put your money in a Roth account, which taxes the money as it’s added to the account.
In other words, the Trump administration is incentivizing Americans to save less and give the government more so that it can finance tax cuts that largely benefit the wealthiest Americans.
More on the details from BI’s Bob Bryan:
For 2017, the annual cap on traditional 401(k)s is $ 18,000 for people under 50 and $ 24,000 over 50. For an IRA, the caps are $ 5,500 and $ 6,500 for the respective age groups.
The new cap would not apply to existing savings already in accounts and employer contributions to a traditional 401(k) or IRA would not be subject to a cap, according to the Journal.
A few things to think about here:
This is a terrible idea.
