3232Intel Innovation 2022: live coverage of Raptor Lake launch and more
https://briefnews.eu/intel-innovation-2022-live-coverage-of-raptor-lake-launch-and-more/
https://briefnews.eu/intel-innovation-2022-live-coverage-of-raptor-lake-launch-and-more/#respondTue, 27 Sep 2022 16:33:17 +0000https://briefnews.eu/intel-innovation-2022-live-coverage-of-raptor-lake-launch-and-more/It’s hardware season, and Intel is up to bat next. The company is hosting its next Intel Innovation event, and the focus at today’s event is expected to be on its next desktop processors, the 13th-gen Raptor Lake.
These highly anticipated new chips are the sequel to last year’s 12th-gen Alder Lake, which represented a massive sea change in the world of Intel chips. With the adoption of a higher core count, “hybrid” processors resulted in some impressive leads over the competition. But with AMD’s strong showing in Ryzen 7000, the pressure is back on Intel to deliver the performance needed to stay on top.
The event is going to touch on far more than just these new processors, though. With over 100 sessions slated for the two-day conference for developers and partners, the keynote is only the tip of the iceberg — but it’s the part that PC enthusiasts will be paying the most attention to. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is expected to kick off the presentation, which begins at 9 a.m. PT and can be livestreamed from Intel’s website.

Gelsinger throws shade at GPU pricing
Gelsinger has brought up a colleague on the stage to showcase her career, but let’s just mention what Intel is doing with the Arc 7700.

Intel's graphics get the spotlight
Conversation around graphics is up next. Gelsinger mentions that graphics has always been a passion of his, and now that he’s back, he wants to finish. He has announced the Intel Data Center GPU Flex, and held the product up for display. Next, Gelsinger showcased the Ponte Vecchio for high-powered supercomputers, and ended with the Arc A770 card for gamers. Gelsinger says reviews are already being shipped out to reviewers.

Moore's Law is alive and well
Gelsinger is speaking about the ubiquitous technological superpowers of the modern world, even using his own hearing aid that he pulled out of his ear as an example. He’s moving on to compute as the example of Intel’s contribution to this technology, proudly stating that Moore’s Law isn’t dead, as other companies have claimed. Gelsinger says Intel wants to be the stewards of Moore’s Law. Intel has put its roadmap of nodes on the screen to remind us of how aggressively the company is pushing ahead with nodes.

IN 1533 A noblewoman in Calais presented a visiting grandee with a peculiar gift: her personal toothpick, which, she was eager to point out, she had used for seven years. Whether it pleased her guest is not known, according to Hazel Forsyth, a curator at the Museum of London. But the story amused Ms Forsyth’s audience at last month’s “Festival of Maintenance”, a conference dedicated to keeping things in good nick.
Events about making new things are ten a penny. Less common are events about keeping things as good as new. Maintenance lacks the glamour of innovation. It is mostly noticed in its absence—the tear in a shirt, the mould on a ceiling, the spluttering of an engine. Not long ago David Edgerton of Imperial College London, who also spoke at the festival, drove across the bridge in Genoa that collapsed in August, killing 43 people (pictured). “We’re encouraged to pride ourselves on all being innovators and…

POPULAR concern about free trade with China has focused on the loss of manufacturing jobs in America and Europe. Policymakers have an additional worry: that China’s rise is hurting innovation in the West. This fear is among the small set of issues that unites American Democrats and Republicans. In 2016 Barack Obama’s commerce secretary said that China’s state-driven economy would weaken the world’s innovation ecosystem. Donald Trump’s advisers allege that China makes it harder for foreign firms to invest in innovation by squeezing their returns. Mr Trump’s trade team was expected to raise this complaint, among others, with Chinese officials during talks in Beijing on May 3rd and 4th, as The Economist went to press. There is one problem. Data suggest that competition with China has coincided with more innovation in America, not less.
The relationship between competition and innovation is complex, even before considering trade with China. Economists agree that the right competitive landscape fosters innovation. But they disagree about what exactly that landscape looks like. More competition might prod companies to try harder to develop new products in the hope of gaining market share. Alternatively, if competition is cut-throat, profits might evaporate to the point that companies have little incentive to take risks.
The fear is that China generates the wrong kind of competition and stunts the good kind. Businesspeople elsewhere worry that when the Chinese government decides to fund this or that industry, investment soars and margins collapse. Overcapacity in steel was caused in part by Chinese investment in steel processing; semiconductor firms think their industry might be next. At the same time, argues Robert Lighthizer, the US Trade Representative, foreign companies that beat their Chinese competitors are not adequately rewarded because China presses them to transfer their intellectual property.
The two main academic papers on this question looked at the years around China’s accession to the World Trade Organisation in 2001. Far from settling the matter, they were contradictory. Economists studying European companies found that competition from Chinese imports both caused firms to improve their technology and led to a shift in jobs to the most advanced firms. They concluded that 15% of the upgrading of technology in Europe between 2000 and 2007 could be attributed to the increase in imports from China. But economists examining the impact on America argued that, on the contrary, Chinese competition had led companies to spend less on research as profits fell. They calculated that imports from China explained 40% of a slowdown in American patenting between 1999 and 2007, compared with the preceding decade.
The IMF has now weighed in with more recent figures. Its conclusion is rather more cheerful, at least for those who think a trade war with China is a rotten idea. In a report published in April the fund showed that, following an extended period of decline, high-quality patents granted to American companies had risen sharply between 2010 and 2014. It also pointed to a big increase in American spending on research and development during the same years—even as America’s trade deficit with China rocketed (see chart). The growth in patents was more sluggish in Europe and Japan. But both patents and research spending soared in South Korea, the country most directly exposed to manufacturing competition from China.
A separate IMF working paper late last year unpicked some of what is happening in America. Competition from Chinese imports has caused research spending to be reallocated within certain industries, away from also-rans and towards the most productive and profitable firms. At the same time, many researchers left manufacturing industries and moved into service sectors such as data-processing and finance. Both results are consistent with an American economy that is playing to its strengths. The IMF’s analysts concluded that Chinese imports were not a threat to innovation in America, after all, and that policymakers could take a deep breath. No loud inhaling sounds have yet been reported from the White House.

Today, the FCC voted to move forward with a proposal to open up communications spectrum beyond 95 GHz. In a statement, it said that spectrum above this range has been thought to be at the edge of what’s usable, but now it wants to provide different levels of authorization to use the spectrum to, as Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement, “promote innovation and help put this spectrum to its best use.” Pai noted that some might be skeptical as to whether spectrum above 95 GHz can actually be used, but he added, “The point is that we must be open to new technologies that haven’t even been developed. And while we don’t know precisely how far the laws of physics will permit us to go, we do know there’s potential and interest. Engineers and entrepreneurs need to have the ability to push the envelope.”
Today the @FCC is “Moving On Up” by taking steps to more efficiently use #spectrum above 95 GHz. It has my support. #OpenMtgFCC
The FCC proposes 102.2 GHz of spectrum be available for licensed services, 15.2 GHz available for unlicensed devices and that a new type of experimental license be available for spectrum between 95 GHz and 3 THz. For the latter, the FCC says, “These licenses will give innovators more flexibility, compared to the existing experimental licensing rules, by including a longer license term and license transferability to encourage investment and allowing the sale of equipment during market trials.”
Additionally, the FCC voted to adopt a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would institute guidelines in accordance with Section 7 of the Communications Act, which requires the FCC to respond to new technology proposals in a timely manner. While Section 7 was passed in 1983, no clear rules have been set in regards to it. “So today, we’re proposing clear guidelines and procedures to implement Section 7,” Pai said in a statement. “Our goal is simple: to ensure that the FCC doesn’t stand as a gatekeeper between entrepreneurs who need our OK for new technologies and services and American consumers who can benefit from those innovations.” While the proposal to open up higher-range spectrum was supported by all FCC commissioners, Commissioner Clyburn dissented to this one in part and Commissioner Rosenworcel dissented in full.
Both Notices of Proposed Rulemaking will be up for public comment.

https://briefnews.eu/the-6-biggest-hurdles-slowing-the-pace-of-ai-innovation/#respondSun, 04 Feb 2018 06:55:45 +0000http://briefnews.eu/the-6-biggest-hurdles-slowing-the-pace-of-ai-innovation/
GUEST:
At first glance, the artificial intelligence industry seems to be on fire, with tons of consumer demand and ample investor interest. In fact, VC investment in AI startups rose from just $ 3.2 billion in 2014 to more than $ 9.5 billion just in the first five months of 2017. There are countless exciting prospects for AI development, including applications for healthcare, agriculture, and other realms of technology, but the AI industry isn’t a runaway train just yet.
The biggest hurdles
AI has plenty of excitement backing it, but these significant hurdles are keeping it from achieving even more explosive growth:
1. Flexibility
One of the greatest advantages of young startups is their capacity to be lean, quick, and flexible; big companies often suffer from protracted decision-making and an inability to pivot, but smaller, nimbler companies can react quickly to new circumstances and survive new conditions more efficiently. However, AI startups don’t necessarily enjoy this advantage; because AI is so complicated, and depends on so many unknown variables, it’s hard to shift gears in the middle of a project. This can leave some AI startups dead in the water, or delay projects far past their originally outlined timelines.
2. Talent shortages
The number of professionals well-versed in machine learning and innovative enough to create new features is very small. There’s a talent shortage in AI, and it’s having some profound effects on the pace of development in the industry.
There are hundreds of interesting AI startups on the horizon or in the middle of development. That sounds like an exciting prospect for consumers hoping to get their hands on some next-generation technology, but it also presents an important problem: competition. Startups are forced to make faster decisions, go to market faster, and trim features in order to beat their competitors. This is causing some startups to burn out faster and others to launch with inferior products.
4. Sales cycle unpredictability
Few AI products have a clearly defined sales cycle. It’s obscured by several variables and for a handful of main reasons. For example, AI is still a relatively new field, so its market isn’t clearly defined. Many applications could do well to target either individual users or companies, and it’s hard to predict exactly what your product will look like at the end of its development cycle—even if you have a visionary plan in place. This makes it difficult for AI startups to predict their revenue streams accurately, and even more difficult to ensure enough revenue to stay afloat during their early stages of growth.
5. Machine learning complexity
It should go without saying that programming advanced AI features is ridiculously complicated. If you follow existing formulas and rely on the collective knowledge that we already have, machine learning becomes a simple matter of copying, pasting, and tweaking to make it slightly different. But to truly innovate in this field, you need a wealth of knowledge and experience, with an extra dash of innovative spirit to back you up.
6. Processing power
Most AI systems demand huge amounts of processing power to work. Until recently, this has been a significant limiting factor; many startups didn’t have access to the processing units necessary to get the job done. Now, companies like Nvidia are relishing in the demand for processing chips for AI applications, enjoying record sales and interest. However, in general, processing growth hasn’t been able to fully keep up with the latest AI technology, and that fundamental limit may continue to be a problem for developers.
Will AI see a slowdown?
So is it likely we’ll see a slowdown in the advancement of AI technology? In the short-term, it’s possible, though the high levels of consumer excitement and venture capital available will likely counteract some of these effects. As the tech becomes more accessible and easier to grasp, innovators in the field will naturally overcome many of these problems. Until then, they’ll continue complicating an already complicated industry.
