  • Ukraine's counteroffensive in its war against Russia is lifting Wall Street's mood, analysts say. 
  • The government in Kyiv said it has retaken about 3,500 square miles of territory from Russia.
  • "Suddenly investors are opening their eyes to the possibility of a sooner end to the war," wrote City Index analyst Fionna Cincotta.

Ukraine's counteroffensive against Russia is sending stocks higher on optimism that the war could find an end sooner than previously thought, according to analysts. 

Earlier this month, Ukraine launched attacks in the southern and eastern parts of the country, and some on Wall Street noted last week that earlier gains coincided with a rally in the stock market. 

And over the weekend, Russia's defensive lines in eastern Ukraine collapsed as troops fled in disarray and panic, leaving behind weapons, ammunition and even their own comrades. The government in Kyiv said it has retaken about 9,000 square kilometers, or 3,500 square miles, of territory from Russia since launching its offensive.

US stocks continued to climb on Monday after they notched their first weekly gain to snap a three-week losing streak.

"The upbeat mood is being helped as well by advances by Ukraine in the war. Suddenly investors are opening their eyes to the possibility of a sooner end to the war," wrote City Index analyst Fionna Cincotta.

Wharton Business School's Jeremy Siegel also chimed in on Monday, telling CNBC that the latest Ukrainian advances "may mean some sort of settlement going forward."

Elsewhere, PineBridge Investments multi-asset portfolio manager Hani Redha said the latest news out of Ukraine "is creating some glimmers of hope for the market that there might be a resolution and provide some relief on the intensity of the energy shock." 

An end to the war in Ukraine could provide some stability to a volatile energy market which has been upended since Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February.

State-run Gazprom has indefinitely cut off gas flows to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, resulting in soaring electricity prices and calls for market interventions and energy rationing over the winter 

Still, Russia had previously struggled in earlier months of the war to hold on to advances in Ukraine only to reverse course and drive deeper into the country. Stocks rallied late March on the prospect of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey which did not produce an agreement.

Stretch goals where you can put your name on a tombstone on Edmund McMillen’s lawn. Drawing pictures of the developer nude. The Kickstarter for The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, a card game built around the story behind The Binding of Isaac, has been a wild ride, with the developer getting fans engaged with the crowdfunding campaign through all manner of silly, fun ideas.

IndieGames.com caught up with McMillen to talk about why he chose to take such a silly route to crowdfunding, and how it’s made the campaign a source of positive energy (and has just destroyed the initial funding goal) for the developer.

The Kickstarter for The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls is easily the most creative Kickstarter I’ve ever seen. What prompted you to try so many different things to engage your fans?

McMillen – I really just wanted to have fun. In a lot of ways, the past few weeks has been a really fun celebration of everything Isaac, and I’ve gotten to interact with fans in really creative and fun ways. I did an ARG in the past and had a great time doing it. I wanted to do another take on the same idea, and when I looked up and saw what other Kickstarters did with their stretch goals, I decided to just spin them with my own style. I really didn’t expect so many people to shave their heads while saying “whatever you wish mother”…

What sorts of ideas have you tried so far? How did you come up with these ideas? How do you feel that these ideas get your fans involved and talking about the game?

I stayed on-topic as much as possible. I started easy, asking people to adopt a cat and name them Guppy or send me pics of them crying, but it has escalated into tons of people drawing me dead and nude and getting tattoos of the game’s art. The more challenging goals, like beat the basement blindfolded, having your mom get to the caves, or beating mom with your feet, were all pretty amazing to watch.

I’m not sure these things are really getting the word out, but they are fun to watch and I lost like 2k followers in a day when I retweeted 50+ drawings of me nude. Good times were had. I have no complaints.

Why is this kind of engagement so important to you? How do you feel it’s helping your Kickstarter raise funds?

i feel like a bit of a broken record but my wife and i just think its neat and fun for us and fans to do stuff like this. There is no real way to tell if this is helping drive sales. Honestly, it’s articles writing about the weird shit we are doing that seem to help more than the actual things, so thanks for that 🙂

How has running this kind of lighthearted, fan-focused campaign made you feel?

It’s honestly breathed a lot of life into my jaded husk. Working on this never felt like work. It never felt like something I’d done before, and every aspect of the campaign and designing this game has been totally amazing. Making digital indie games is very lonely and isolating – Four Souls has been the total opposite. I get to hang out with friends and family 2+ times a week just playing games and having fun, streaming, eating pizza, and talking shop.

I hope it comes through in what we are doing, because in all honesty, the game’s really damn fun and I think people are going to love it when it releases at the end of the year. My only worry is that we aren’t reaching enough fans. The Kickstarter has been super successful, but 20k backers is less than .2% of the people who own the digital game. We only have five more days left in the Kickstarter and almost everything we are offering is KS exclusive, so if you are reading this and have friends who play Isaac, make sure they know about this campaign before it’s over!

It came not from The New Yorker, the magazine for which the 52-year-old Boston-based doctor has been a staff writer since 1998, or from a thankful patient, but from an executive in Warren Buffett’s inner circle.

The money was a token of gratitude for an article titled “The Cost Conundrum,” an analysis of why ballooning health care costs in the U.S. were not matched by commensurate gains. Gawande, an endocrinologist and surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a professor of public health at Harvard, returned the check — only to receive two in return. The $ 40,000 went to charity.

This episode may have seeded the announcement that Gawande is to be chief executive of a nonprofit venture funded jointly by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase & Co., formed to address the health of their combined million-plus workforce.

“I have devoted my public health career to building scalable solutions for better health care delivery,” Gawande says. “Now I have the backing of these remarkable organizations to pursue this mission with even greater impact.… This work will take time but must be done. The system is broken, and better is possible.”

Other than boosting employee health and cutting costs, the prescription for the as-yet-unnamed Boston venture is unclear. But the bloated $ 3 trillion U.S. health care industry is seen as ripe for the scalpel. Gawande — who has written four best-selling books on medicine, founded projects to improve health in developing countries and received a MacArthur Foundation “genius” award — will now have a generously funded test bed to think differently. The involvement of Amazon suggests technological disruption; bricks-and-mortar hospitals seem, literally, an outmoded operating system in a digitized world.

It is an unexpected direction for the doctor who was tipped to be surgeon general in a Hillary Clinton administration. “I don’t think it’s excessive to call him our most distinguished living doctor,” says Andrew Franklin, a friend and the founder of Profile Books, which publishes Gawande’s works in the U.K.

“He has a real sense of the power of medicine to improve the world. And he’s become fantastically successful without becoming obnoxious. I don’t have many heroes, but Atul is one of them,” Franklin says.

Gawande was born in 1965 in New York City — the family later moved to rural Ohio — to immigrant Indian doctors: His father, Atmaram, was a noted urologist, his mother, Sushila, a pediatrician. The couple supported philanthropic causes in the U.S. and India. The young Atul resisted following in their footsteps, studying political science and biology at Stanford (his sister, Meeta, became a lawyer) and volunteering in Democrat circles. A Rhodes scholarship whisked him to Balliol College, Oxford, for a master’s in philosophy, politics and economics.

But the call of medicine proved too strong. By the mid-1990s, Gawande had secured his medical degree from Harvard and dabbled in health policy for Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign. He had also met Kathleen Hobson, a literature graduate whom he later married. The couple have three children, one born with a heart condition, which has afforded Gawande a view from the other side of the operating table. Last year, he tweeted pointedly to his 252,000 followers that his son was one of the uninsurables. His most recent book, Being Mortal, addressed aging and death, partly through the experience of watching his father succumb to cancer.

It was his friend Malcolm Gladwell who first persuaded him to write, initially for the internet magazine Slate and later for The New Yorker. Gawande quickly garnered public acclaim and awards for elegant essays on public health and medicine. Books expanded his reach: His first two, Complications and Better, focused on his experiences as a surgeon and brought an aura of humility to a profession known for its swagger. His third, The Checklist Manifesto, advocating a policy usually associated with aviation safety, became a manual for medical reform. Hospitals that took such basic steps as confirming a patient’s name before an operation found their death rates nearly halved. Major surgical complications fell by a third. The idea was taken up by the World Health Organization, for which Gawande became an ambassador.

Ara Darzi, the pioneering surgeon and advocate of National Health Service reform in the U.K., says Gawande has “altered public and professional perceptions of the culture of modern medicine.” One health professional described him as “confident without being slick.”

He is also ferociously organized, slicing his diary into 10-minute segments; he reportedly writes during the 45-minute turnround between operations. Running things is not his métier. But Ashish Jha, director of Harvard’s Global Health Institute, detects method in the managerial madness: “If they had a detailed strategic plan, Atul would not be the guy to execute it. But they do have someone with a broad vision … and as brilliant a communicator as you can get.”

When asked about screwing up, Gawande said last year that he had failed at two things: philosophy and songwriting. He was once in a rock band whose many names included Thousands of Breaded Shrimp, and wrote dirges while abroad, pining for his girlfriend. “The songs were terrible,” he recalled. But he still got the girl.
