Spain holidays: Beach vendors are hiding cocktail ingredients down filthy drains https://briefnews.eu/spain-holidays-beach-vendors-are-hiding-cocktail-ingredients-down-filthy-drains/ https://briefnews.eu/spain-holidays-beach-vendors-are-hiding-cocktail-ingredients-down-filthy-drains/#respond Wed, 15 Aug 2018 18:06:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spain-holidays-beach-vendors-are-hiding-cocktail-ingredients-down-filthy-drains/

Spain holidaymakers are being urged by police to steer clear of cocktails sold on Spanish beaches by illegal vendors as footage emerged of ingredients being stored under manhole covers in disgusting conditions.

Beach vendors regularly sell drinks to sun worshippers on the beaches of such tourist hotspots as Barcelona and Benidorm.

It’s believed that they even tell the tourists that the cocktails are from nearby bars, reported MailOnline.

At €5, they may seem like a bargain, but in fact you could be dicing with your health as it’s revealed everything from bottle and straws to ice and glasses are sometimes stored down filthy drains.

A video posted on Facebook shows police officers pulling up manhole covers in the pavements in Barcelona and extracting bags of cocktail equipment stored in less than sanitary conditions.

The officers claim that the drinks are then mixed on dirty surfaces, sometimes in bathrooms.

The fruit used in the cocktails is washed under beach showers, the officers said.

The Facebook video shows holidaymakers thrilled with their cheap drinks but are horrified when they find out where they’ve come from. A mojito in a legal beach bar costs around €10.

Tourists should avoid buying from illegal beach vendors, no matter how tempting the price and buy instead from established bars and restaurants.

This is not the first time Barcelona has hit the headlines this week. It has been revealed that locals are growing increasingly angry with rowdy tourists.

The tourists are accused of urinating in public, being noisy late into the night and leaving drug paraphernalia in children’s playgrounds.

Furious residents are now demanding that action is taken to prevent further damage being done to the Catalonian capital.

They are blaming Left-wing mayor Ada Colau for allowing ‘overtourism’ to damage Barcelona and demand that a council-appointed expert take over responsibility for the city’s security.

Critics have highlighted three areas where they claim the problems in Barcelona lie. The first is the rising number of short-term rental sites such as Airbnb which damage renting for residents in the city, the second is the violence and anti-social behaviour around the drug trade and thirdly, the expansion of illegal street selling.

Spain’s popularity with tourists has been highlighted recently as the most-loved beaches in Europe were unveiled by beach holiday specialist On the Beach who surveyed 1,000 families – most of them were in Spain.

Almost one in five agreed that Tenerife was their favourite. The popular Spanish spot welcomes two million British tourists every year

Spain overwhelmingly dominated the list of best, with the sun-kissed island of Majorca coming in second, with the vote of 18 per cent.

The Costa del Sol featured in third place thanks to being backed by 13 per cent of those questioned.

Fourth place was taken by Spain’s neighbour Portugal, with 11 per cent of Britons naming the Algarve as their favourite.

Tenerife’s fellow Canary Island, Gran Canaria, brought Spain back into the top 10 in fifth place.

Snack & Slash Puts A Bounty On Fresh Ingredients https://briefnews.eu/snack-slash-puts-a-bounty-on-fresh-ingredients/ https://briefnews.eu/snack-slash-puts-a-bounty-on-fresh-ingredients/#respond Fri, 04 May 2018 02:44:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snack-slash-puts-a-bounty-on-fresh-ingredients/ snackAndSlash_header.png

It’s said that cooking requires a lot of stamina, and Snack & Slash takes that statement to heart (and stomach!). This little chef is all about top-quality ingredients, technique, and oversized kitchen tools. Requiring specific instructions, you’ll have to grab the right tool and go on the hunt for the ingredient in the correct area. Sound over-easy? Try it while the (sentient) ingredients are scrambling to get away from you.

Snack & Slash requires players put every second of their timer to use in order to create the most delectable dishes and follow the recipe to the T! Players will be sent after a specific ingredient for each of their meals, and it must be prepared in a specific way to get things right. This requires players pick the right tool and head to the right area in order to get their dish done on time.

Need to chop a carrot? Pick up a Cloud-Strife-Sized Knife and head over to the outdoors area to find the delicious orange vegetable. If you need to whisk an egg, you’ll have to go back and get the whisk though! And, you won’t be finding an egg where the vegetables hang out, you’ll have to venture to the fridge. Players will have to keep track of tools, ingredients, and locations in order to become the top chef in the area.

Bamboo pesto? Supermarket own brands contain THESE cheaper ingredients https://briefnews.eu/bamboo-pesto-supermarket-own-brands-contain-these-cheaper-ingredients/ https://briefnews.eu/bamboo-pesto-supermarket-own-brands-contain-these-cheaper-ingredients/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 01:42:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bamboo-pesto-supermarket-own-brands-contain-these-cheaper-ingredients/

A test of 12 own-brand standard and premium pestos – all made in Italy – found a range of additions to the sauce’s traditional four key ingredients of basil, pine nuts, parmesan and olive oil.

Which? found all of the standard pestos were made with between 42 per cent and 49 per cent basil, but also contained cheaper alternatives to the traditional ingredients such as cashew nuts instead of pine nuts, or a mix of both.

Olive oil was also substituted with sunflower oil, and parmesan with less expensive Grana Padano and Pecorino Romano cheeses.

All of the standard pestos, apart from Waitrose’s £1.35 version, used thickeners such as potato flakes, nut flour, vegetable or even bamboo fibres.

Standard pesto from Sainsbury’s and Tesco, both £1, and the Co-op (£1.19) also contained sugar, and the Co-op, Morrisons (£1) and Tesco listed water as an ingredient.

Marks and Spencer’s standard jar, the most expensive at £2.10, contained carrot fibres.

All of the supermarkets’ premium pestos were labelled ‘alla Genovese’, relating to the sauce’s origins in Genoa, all contained between 38 per cent and 50 per cent basil as well as extra-virgin olive oil, Parmigiano Reggiano (parmesan) and pine nuts.

However, even these contained some surprising extras, with Morrisons (£1.95), Sainsbury’s (£1.50) and Tesco (£2) all adding vegetable or bamboo fibres as thickeners and sugar, and Morrisons also listed water as an ingredient.

The products with the most authentic and traditional ingredients were Asda Extra Special Genovese Basil Pesto (£1.39) and Waitrose 1 Pesto alla Genovese (£2.70).

The watchdog said its investigation showed that a higher price did not necessarily mean that the product would be free of cheaper and possibly unwanted ingredients and urged shoppers to check the labelling.

Which? director of research Nikki Stopford said: “Pesto has become a staple food in the UK but our research shows that many shoppers may be getting more than they bargain for when it comes to the pesto they are buying – and not necessarily in a good way.

“Our advice is not to assume that all pesto contains the same traditional ingredients. Check the ingredients list if authenticity is important to you, or if you are trying to avoid certain contents, such as added sugar.”

Arthritis is a common condition that affects people of all ages, according to the NHS.

Symptoms of arthritis include joint stiffness, tenderness, restricted movement, muscle wasting and warm, red skin over affected joints.

Some drugs and therapies may help to ease arthritis pain.

But, osteoarthritis patient Vanessa, 38, said she was “amazed” at the impact of a supplement containing boswellia and gingerol.

Vanessa was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both of her ankles and knees in 2016.

“The pain and stiffness can be really hard to take and it impacts the amount I can play with my little boy, who’s only five years old, and loves playing superhero games,” she said.

“Getting up off of the sofa and getting out of bed in the morning can be really tough as my body feels like it’s locked.

“I always joke with my son that I’m like the tin man from The Wizard of Oz.”

To ease her arthritis pain, Vanessa had an exercise plan and regularly took part in yoga and Pilates to help improve flexibility.

“I take exercise seriously because gaining weight becomes a vicious cycle – the more weight I carry the worse my symptoms get.”

Vanessa now takes FlexiQule supplements, which contain the natural ingredients boswellia and gingerol.

Boswellia helps to reduce pain, and prevent inflammation. Gingerol is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, according to FlexiQule.

Vanessa said: “In particular the swelling in my knees went down dramatically, and my mobility has improved.

“Getting up in the morning and keeping up with my energetic son is much easier now.

“These are the day-to-day things that have made a big difference to my life.”

There’s currently no cure for osteoarthritis, according to the NHS, but some treatments could help to relieve symptoms.

Supportive therapies may be able to relieve joint pain, it said.

Check The Ingredients 👀 https://briefnews.eu/check-the-ingredients-%f0%9f%91%80/ https://briefnews.eu/check-the-ingredients-%f0%9f%91%80/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2017 04:02:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/check-the-ingredients-%f0%9f%91%80/

Ah, Thanksgiving. A holiday we once enjoyed by letting our guard down, getting fat with relatives, and waiting for Uncle Bob to pass out before grabbing the remote and turning off the Cowboys game. That ideal version of Thanksgiving lasted from 1621 until 2015. And oh, how great it was. But now, a Kremlin-directed troll offensive is threatening to shake our once-great holiday to its very core. With Putin’s social media warriors seeking to sow discord at every chance, it’s simply no longer possible to trust that the Thanksgiving content in our News Feeds isn’t subversive foreign propaganda intended to rip our families, and our nation, apart. And thus, we, the people of this great nation, must examine every post, every recipe, every advice column and every meme, to make sure that the content at the foundation of our Thanksgiving observance is not being corrupted and weaponized to turn us against each other.

So, my friends and countrymen, here is a guide for you and your families to make sure the Russians don’t fuck with the turkey. This guide is gleaned from the front lines of the social media disinformation wars. Use it often. Use it wisely.

Check The Ingredients

The first place you should look for signs of Russian meddling is in the ingredients section of any Thanksgiving recipe content. If your traditional Thanksgiving meal recipe post recommends a feast of borscht, solyanka, and pierogi, you should view this with some suspicion (though it does sound delicious). When Grandma walks in with a meal made up of these items, immediately confiscate her phone and search it. If her browser history is filled with RT articles and her Facebook is stocked with state secession groups, she is likely being influenced by Putin’s keyboard warriors. (It’s difficult to really know for sure though. Also, there are few good solutions to prevent similar manipulation in the future) After reviewing grandma’s phone, hand it back to her. Give her a kiss. Tell her you love her. Then gently convey there’s a chance she’s been influenced by a foreign chaos campaign. Eat the food with a smile. A great beer pairing for perogies is Baltika No. 9 — the St. Petersburg brew is extra strong and will come in handy for dealing with your family the rest of the day.

Dead Giveaways: Spelling and Grammar

Next, you must vigorously examine the spelling and grammar inside any Thanksgiving-related content in your News Feeds. Russian trolls are notoriously bad at making sense in English — a Texas secession page once eloquently declared “IN LOVE WITH TEXAS SHAPE” — and it’s likely they’ll slip up here as well. If you see any Thanksgiving memes declaring “In Love with Turkey shape,” or “Vladimir Putin, you I am thankful for,” you might well be viewing the work of the menace movement based in St. Petersburg. It will of course be difficult to know exactly what you’re looking at. And if it is Russian propaganda, Facebook will likely only admit it months down the road. If ever. Proceed with caution.

Identify Divisive Recommendations

It’s been a rough few months, America. So rough we could probably all use a stiff glass of scotch and nap. Make it two glasses and a good night’s sleep. Over the past two years, we’ve had so many disagreements on politics and policy that a smooth Russian social media instigator would encourage us to talk politics over our Thanksgiving meals. With this in mind, when Uncle Franklin comes in with a printout of a Wall Street Journal story headlined “Want to Spice Up Thanksgiving Dinner? Talk Politics,” ask him if he’s seen the writer’s other articles, including “When Boxing Goes Low, I Go High,” about the time the same author attended Mayweather vs. McGregor totally stoned. When you finish your question, look over to Uncle Franklin as he picks out a tin from his jacket pocket and removes cigarette looking thing from the tin. Hey… Uncle Franklin… you can’t… it’s… UNCLE FRANKLIN!!!… wait this is a family… ah, okay…old habits die hard…

Beware The Fashion Blogs

Nothing pulls families apart quite like sloppy dressing. So be on high alert for questionable fashion advice intended to deliver you to your family’s meal looking like a hot mess. Remember, it is never acceptable to wear sweatpants to your Aunt Matilda’s house. Never. Even if they say “USA” in big, bold letters down the leg. Also, do not wear gym shorts. White socks should be avoided as well. Costumes are okay as long as they show most of your face so Aunt Matilda can give you a big kiss. You can also wear one of those big Russian snow hats if it’s cold. Okay, I admit it, I’m no longer giving tips on how to spot Russian-seeded content. I’m giving you straight up fashion advice. So wear a nice button up or a sweater. And take a shower for goodness sake. And if you must ride a horse to the meal, do so without a shirt, while flexing, to show you are a strong, powerful leader.

From ice to fire: Study dismantles theory that other planets has ingredients for life https://briefnews.eu/from-ice-to-fire-study-dismantles-theory-that-other-planets-has-ingredients-for-life/ https://briefnews.eu/from-ice-to-fire-study-dismantles-theory-that-other-planets-has-ingredients-for-life/#respond Tue, 01 Aug 2017 02:39:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/from-ice-to-fire-study-dismantles-theory-that-other-planets-has-ingredients-for-life/

Hopes that other planets could harbor life were dealt a blow Monday when new research punched holes in a theory of how other worlds could hold water.

The theory held that planets, or moons, go through phases where the conditions are right to hold liquid water when they are in the so-called “goldilocks zone,” where they are warm enough so that the water isn’t trapped in ice and also not so hot that the water vaporizes.

This phase would happen when a young, dim star starts warming and melts the ice on planets orbiting it at just the right distance.

Saturn’s moon Enceladus and Jupiter’s moon Europa were touted as potential candidates for such celestial bodies in our solar system. However, a new study published in Nature Geoscience suggests that these worlds would likely not be habitable, even after their icy surfaces melt.

The researchers, from Peking University in China, used 3D climate models to simulate the evolution of icy planets and found that the simulated worlds would likely have skipped the habitable phase because of the incredibly high amount of energy required to melt their surface.

The team found that when the star becomes hot enough to melt the ice, the models quickly transitioned to a “greenhouse state.” The oceans evaporated and the planets skipped over the habitable phase.

“We find that the stellar fluxes that are required to overcome a planet’s initial snowball state are so large that they lead to significant water loss and preclude a habitable planet,” the team wrote, according to Phys.org.

Earth was different, because when it thawed, approximately 600 to 800 million years ago, it required less solar heat to melt the ice due to planet-warming atmospheric greenhouse gases emitted by volcanic eruptions.

One of Warren Buffett’s favorite investors listed the ingredients for a bubble — and warned many are present today https://briefnews.eu/one-of-warren-buffetts-favorite-investors-listed-the-ingredients-for-a-bubble-and-warned-many-are-present-today/ https://briefnews.eu/one-of-warren-buffetts-favorite-investors-listed-the-ingredients-for-a-bubble-and-warned-many-are-present-today/#respond Thu, 27 Jul 2017 05:22:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/one-of-warren-buffetts-favorite-investors-listed-the-ingredients-for-a-bubble-and-warned-many-are-present-today/ Howard MarksBloomberg TV

Billionaire Howard Marks has no problem with being cautious.

Marks’ investment firm, Oaktree Capital, is considered one of the leading investors in distressed debt, essentially riskier debt.

He counts Warren Buffett as a friend and a fan. “When I see memos from Howard Marks in my mail, they’re the first thing I open and read,” Buffett once said.

In a memo out to clients, Marks outlined his concern that the markets are entering “too bullish territory” and that a bubble could be forming.

Marks said some might say his warning is premature, but that doesn’t bother him.

“I think it’s better to turn cautious too soon (and thus perhaps underperform for a while) rather than too late after the downslide has begun, making it hard to trim risk, achieve exits and cut losses,” Marks wrote.

In the memo, Marks outlines the 9 ingredients that can make up both a boom or a bubble. They are as follows:

  • A benign environment – Good times make investors complacent.
  • A grain of truth – The catalyst of a boom is typically real, but it gets overblown.
  • Early success – The folks who made big gains early on will turn to the so-called “fool in the end” to cash out of their investment.
  • More money than ideas – Folks pour money into lackluster investment ideas because of a glut of capital.
  • Willing suspension of disbelief – People convince themselves that “this time is different” and a correction could never happen.
  • Rejection of valuation norms – Think dot.com bubble. This is when people start saying the price of an asset is never too high to get in.
  • The pursuit of the new – Young people or new entrants start making more money than everyone else.
  • The virtuous circle – When people think the truths underpinning an asset will never change and can only push its price higher.
  • Fear of missing out – FOMO can be a powerful thing. So powerful that when all the other ingredients are present, people will ignore them because they don’t want to lose out on making money.

Many of those ingredients, according to Marks, are evident in today’s market. Here’s Marks:

Performance has been good – with minor exceptions, quickly rectified – since the beginning of 2009 (that’s more than eight years). There’s certainly more money around these days than high-return possibilities. “New ideas” are readily accepted, and some things are viewed as representing virtuous circles.”

But there are also a few ingredients missing.

“Most people (a) are conscious of the uncertainties listed above, (b) recognize that prospective returns are quite skimpy, and (c) accept that things are unlikely to go well forever,” Marks said.

Still, Marks is worried because people have no idea what could bring about a correction, and it’s that mystery hanging over the markets that could wreak havoc.

“With the negative catalyst so elusive and the return on cash at punitive levels, people worry more about being under-invested or bearing too little risk (and thus earning too low a return in good markets) than they do about losing money,” Marks concluded.

Marks founded Oaktree in 1995, and the firm now manages about $ 100 billion. Marks is estimated to have a personal net worth of close to $ 1.97 billion, according to Forbes.
