Fortnite really got into the Halloween spirit with its Fortnitemares special event. Sadly, it will come to an end Sunday evening. But developer Epic Games wants to give fans a final treat, with a one-time event that will occur inside the game at 1PM ET.
Fortnitemares in Battle Royale ends on Sunday, November 4 at 1pm ET/ 6pm UTC. Finish your Fortnitemares Challenges by then to unlock the Dark Engine Glider. Login early and be in-match to witness the one-time event which starts at 1pm ET/ 6pm UTC. pic.twitter.com/6lBVC4REyS

There’s also the mystery of the pink cube — named Kevin by fans — that’s been hanging around the world of Fortnite. The cube is now projecting a laser beam straight into the sky, and is connected to the Cube Monsters — which Epic Games does not want you to refer to as zombies — that have been emerging all over the map. The event on Sunday will likely be linked to the cube.
Fortnite has done in-game events in the past, including a “High Stakes” jewel heist and a rocket launch that left a rift in the sky. Considering the awe that was left by the rocket launch event, fans should not miss out.

There are many, many games that recreate the look of 8-bit and 16-bit games, but there isn’t a lot for people who grew up with the first generation of 3D-oriented consoles. Where’s their nostalgia hit? Playtonic Games is taking care of it. The studio is releasing a “64-bit Tonic” for Yooka-Laylee that gives the game a very appropriate Nintendo 64 flair. Yes, you too can revisit the heady days of the mid-’90s with tube TV fuzziness, muddy textures, crude lighting effects and even choppy frame rates.
The 64-bit mode is coming “soon” to PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One players as a free update. You probably won’t want to play through the entire game this way, but it’s a good reminder of just how far 3D gaming has come in the space of two decades. Besides, this is about as close to another N64 Banjo-Kazooie sequel as you’re likely to get.

Fortnite fans can download another new update, just days after the last one.
The latest patch is available on all platforms except iOS, which means you’ll need to download to continue playing on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and Android.
There’s not much in the way of patch notes, but Epic has confirmed that the update fixes in-game tournament issues.
The news was revealed by Epic Games on Twitter, alongside confirmation that downtime won’t be necessary.
“A patch is currently being deployed on all platforms (except iOS) to fix tournament issues and some Android crashes,” reads an Epic Games tweet.
“No downtime, but you will need to download the update!”
In-game tournaments were introduced alongside update 6.10. They can be found in the Events section of the Battle Royale menu.
Epic explains more about in-game tournaments in a new blog post.
“In-Game Tournaments are open to everyone and provide an opportunity for every player to compete directly alongside the pros for prizes and glory,” reads an Epic post.
“Note that all players must opt-in for crossplay to participate in competitive events.”
Beginning with the Alpha tournaments from now until October 21, tournaments feature a target score that players aim to achieve.
Players can earn points by either achieving high placements or eliminating multiple opponents.
“Matchmaking during a tournament session will pair players with similar point standings, so if you’re playing well within the session you’ll find yourself matched with stronger opponents.
“If you’re struggling then you should find an easier time the longer the session goes on.”
Winners receive a shiny pin to celebrate their accomplishment, although new and better prizes may be available over time.
Interestingly, the cross-platform nature of tournaments means that mouse and keyboard players may face controller and touchscreen users.

Long before loot boxes became the bane of the Internet’s existence, in-game purchases at large could cause a bit of commotion within certain gaming communities. Roughly seven years ago, for instance, a simple monocle almost brought down one of the most active gaming communities around: EVE Online. With a staff holiday looming tomorrow on July 4, we’re resurfacing this cautionary tale of computer-gaming consumerism. It originally ran on July 11, 2011 and appears unchanged below.
Controversy was expected, but not virtual riots.
On June 21, developer CCP updated its popular space-opera-slash-MMO EVE Online so that players could take their avatars outside their ships and walk around the game world. With this new ability came a store that sold vanity items—in-game clothing and accessories that alter an avatar’s looks but don’t change an avatar’s abilities. The price for these items was much higher than most people expected for vanity in-game items which did absolutely nothing, and it made players nervous. The EVE playerbase didn’t want their game turning to microtransactions to increase the cost of playing.

]]>Dota 2 is a completely free-to-play game, with all the MOBA’s heroes available to new players from day one. Valve makes money by selling different in-game cosmetics, announcers, HUDs, etc. When major tournaments roll around, the house that GabeN built also puts out time-limited “Battle Passes” that add challenges, co-operative game types, fantasy leagues and other things that encourage your participation in exchange for special effects and the latest hero skins. That’s how it’s worked in the past, but this year Valve is trying a more consistent approach to monetization with the new Dota Plus subscription.
Valve calls it an “evolution of the Battle Pass.” For $ 3.99/£3.05 per month, or less if you commit to a longer term up front, you get access to an exhaustive list of challenges. Prepare to develop an unhealthy fixation on micro-rewards, in other words. There’s a new hero leveling system so you can show everyone how good you are with a specific character, and various other seemingly pointless ways you can pimp your profile. All the little branches of progression earn you “Reward Shards,” which is the in-game currency you’ll use to buy cosmetics and stuff.
What’s way more interesting, though, is the new Dota Plus Assistant. It’s basically like having a stat-obsessed pro looking over your shoulder. It’ll suggest heroes to pick during the drafting phase and the positions they should play, as well as what abilities and items you should prioritize during the game. It works in real time, too, so as the match progresses it’ll change recommendations based on how things are playing out. Plus subscribers also get access to richer post-game analytics and stats that paint a picture of worldwide trends.
Valve has basically cribbed from great community-run sites like Dotabuff, as well as third-party tools that help players draft effective hero lineups, made them pretty, and baked the ideas in as a premium service. But enough from me. To help you digest everything Dota Plus, why not hear a pro’s take? I recommend watching the candid breakdown below from Dota 2 celebrity PPD, aka Peter Dager, who just happens to be the self-proclaimed “greatest Dota 2 player to ever play the game.”

GUEST:
I’ve always been fascinated by a game’s ability to replicate real-world systems. Social interactions, weather systems, and even nuanced economies are re-created digitally with almost alarming accuracy. This has always been a part of a game’s appeal: the opportunity to safely play around in a world that feels so real.
Today, games are inching closer to reality. Massively multiplayer online games replaced computer-controlled NPCs with real people, making room for massive online communities to grow organically. Now developers have infused in-game economies with real-world currency in an effort to better monetize their products. Instead of using virtual money earned in-game, you might just be asked to fork over real dollars for that next armor upgrade or level-up.
This is the new in-game economy. As the line between what’s real and what’s becomes further blurred, players take on more risk. Whenever a game invites players to buy items with their money, the game also inevitably (and inadvertently) invites scammers, item dupers, and fraud.
Suddenly, a fake world is fraught with real dangers.
So what’s to protect player-driven economies in a largely unregulated environment? Blockchain technology may be the solution we’re looking for, due to the decentralized network and capability to record each transaction to combat fraud.
Economies (virtual or otherwise) are governed by the law of supply and demand. The availability of an item affects the demand for that same item. Generally speaking, the lower the availability, the higher the price. In the real world, items of value are finite. They require time and resources to create which influences their market value. Games attempt to simulate this. Developers set the attributes and rarity of an item in order to incentivize players to spend more time and money to acquire it.
There are three main economic models in games:
Acquiring items, such as new weapons and armor, is often what progresses players forward and unlocks new content for them to consume. In short, it’s a rewards system that keeps the game alive and profitable.
But progress can be expensive in some games. As the free-to-play model becomes more popular, players continue to shell out more real-world money. In 2016, Game of War: Fire Age developer Machine Zone drew an astonishing average of $ 549.69 per paying user. On average, mobile gamers are paying nearly $ 10 a month on in-app purchases.
All of these economies mix scarcity with real money, a combination that leads to problems — which can be remedied by blockchain.
Whenever there’s people forking over real money, there’s always a few nefarious types looking to take advantage.
It’s estimated that “for every legitimate virtual item sold and downloaded, there are 7.5 virtual items downloads lost to fraud.” That’s an astounding ratio that works to corrupt in-game economies and rip off gamers.
Much of the problem exists due to item duping. Fraudsters find exploits within the game that allow them to duplicate what were originally rare and expensive items in high demand. Similar to the real economy, item duping increases inflation while diluting item value. Then there’s identity theft. Criminals use stolen credit cards to purchase in-game items that they sell at discount.
The blockchain, or more specifically, proof of ownership, can fix this. Luckily, proving ownership is one of the things blockchain does really well, and is being used in multiple industries outside of video games.
To quickly review, blockchain became famous as the technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. In short, it’s a decentralized ledger that records an action (in the case of Bitcoin, it’s a transaction). Once recorded, the record is encrypted and publicly accessible.
If the creation and sale of items — whether via the developer or the player — is what fuels the growth and balance of in-game economies, then proving the source of ownership for those items is essential to fighting fraud. The blockchain would act as the official record of the in-game economy. It would store information about which items were created, when they were created, who created them, and any transactions that occurred involving those items. Duping would be impossible, inflation wouldn’t occur (at least not due to fraud), and gamers wouldn’t be ripped off.
Blockchain is already starting to percolate through the gaming industry for these very reasons. CryptoKitties, perhaps one of the more famous (and adorable) examples, allows gamers to buy, sell, and trade digital cats. But unlike other collectible games, CryptoKitties allows players to track ownership of every cat on the blockchain, removing any concern that a player could be victim to the fraudulent sale or trade of these digital felines.
As games become more sophisticated in their rendering of real-world systems, they need to also become more knowledgeable about the risks involved. Historically, the gaming industry is always among the first to adopt new technologies. Blockchain should not be an exception.

We’re amid the gift-giving holidays, and it’s time to celebrate with decorations, good cheer, and crass consumerism. Epic Games is doing its part to deliver all of those things with some updates to Fortnite that will introduce a holiday event and (finally) a way to spend money on the last-player-standing mode. The Survive the Holidays update will decorate trees in lights and ornaments, and it will also give players cosmetic items like ugly Christmas sweaters. This comes alongside the introduction of Fortnite: Battle Royale’s Season 2.
Survive the Holidays and Season 2 have already begun. You can get them now by launching your game on PC or consoles. Since festive theme is only here for a limited time, you may want to check in for your chance to get limited-time items. Surive the Holidays introduces new emotes in addition to new cosmetics, and it also has a limited-time snowball grenade launcher that will go away when the event ends after Christmas.
But the biggest change to Fortnite: Battle Royale is Season 2’s Battle Pass, which is a new optional way to unlock more cosmetic items faster. Players can purchase the Battle Pass for 1,000 V-bucks, which is the equivalent of $ 10. This introduces a new way to spend money in Fortnite, which has previously only enabled microtransactions for its Save the World (PVE) mode. Now, however, you can put money into Battle Royale, which didn’t have in-game purchases until this point.
The Battle Pass gives you instant access to certain cosmetic items, and then you can play to upgrade the Battle Pass and unlock “up to 65 additional rewards.” This pass will last through the entirety of Season 2, which will run through February 20. If you start running out of time, you can of course spend even more money to purchase new Battle Pass levels whenever you want.

We very rarely cover news in the exciting world of cereal marketing here at Ars Technica, so we were unaware until recently that cereal news and review blogs like Cerealously even existed. That said, we were intrigued to find the blog reporting a credible rumor that Kellogg’s is planning to launch a Super Mario-themed cereal—simply called “Super Mario Cereal”—in the near future.
The apparent existence of the mixed berry cereal with power-up shaped marshmallows isn’t that noteworthy on its own (unless you’re a super-fan that’s been waiting for a follow-up to the ’80s Nintendo Cereal System). No, what caught our interest is the reported on-the-box promise that “this box is a special Amiibo—Try it with Super Mario Odyssey.”
A follow-up communication from Kellogg’s reprinted by Cerealously clarifies that “a limited number of packages will have an Amiibo powerup sticker that can be used on the Super Mario Odyssey game with the Nintendo Switch gaming console.” That’s an interesting extension of Nintendo’s existing Amiibo cards line, a less-popular but equally NFC-equipped and functional (for gameplay purposes) version of the Amiibo figurines.
