  • An internal review by a local sheriff’s office indicated that Scot Peterson, the resource officer on duty during the Parkland shooting, failed to confront the gunman.
  • Peterson is believed to have remained outside of the building while the shooting unfolded on Frbruary 14.
  • Some people have criticized Peterson’s conduct.
  • Veterans with combat experience urged caution about lambasting Peterson, whose resignation was announced on Thursday.

After an internal review by the Broward County Sheriff’s office indicated that the student resource officer on duty during the Parkland, Florida, shooting failed to confront the gunman, critics on social media were quick to direct their anger toward the officer on Thursday.

Scot Peterson was armed and in uniform at the time, and reportedly did “nothing” as the shooting unfolded at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He remained outside of the building for at least four minutes during the incident, according to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. Peterson’s resignation was announced on Thursday.

‘Tone deaf’ and ‘infuriating’: Megyn Kelly lays into Trump for criticizing Al Franken sexual misconduct controversy https://briefnews.eu/tone-deaf-and-infuriating-megyn-kelly-lays-into-trump-for-criticizing-al-franken-sexual-misconduct-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/tone-deaf-and-infuriating-megyn-kelly-lays-into-trump-for-criticizing-al-franken-sexual-misconduct-controversy/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 19:46:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tone-deaf-and-infuriating-megyn-kelly-lays-into-trump-for-criticizing-al-franken-sexual-misconduct-controversy/ megyn kellyScreenshot/NBC

  • NBC host Megyn Kelly slammed President Donald Trump for commenting on sexual misconduct allegations against Sen. Al Franken.
  • Trump has been accused of varying degrees of sexually inappropriate behavior by over a dozen women.
  • Kelly also had some harsh words for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who chimed in with his own assessment of the accusation against Franken.
  • At least nine women have publicly accused Moore of unwanted sexual advances.

Megyn Kelly, the host of NBC’s “Megyn Kelly Today,” took to the airwaves Friday morning to lay into President Donald Trump for commenting on the sexual misconduct claim against Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota.

Radio personality Leeann Tweeden accused Franken of forcefully kissing her without her consent while they were rehearsing for a skit they performed for US troops.

Tweeden spoke out about the alleged incident in a column published last week, and also posted a photo which appeared to show Franken groping her breasts while she was sleeping on the flight home from a USO tour in 2006. He issued an apology after Tweeden’s column was published and called for an independent ethics investigation.

Trump lambasted Franken, who has frequently criticized him, shortly after the accusations against the senator emerged.

“The Al Frankenstien picture is really bad, speaks a thousand words,” he tweeted. “Where do his hands go in pictures 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 while she sleeps?”

“And to think that just last week he was lecturing anyone who would listen about sexual harassment and respect for women. Lesley Stahl tape?” he added.

Kelly slammed Trump, who has been accused of varying degrees of sexual misconduct by more than a dozen women, for commenting on the allegations against Franken.

“Who that has been accused of sexual assault would have the gall to preach to others about sexual misconduct?” Kelly said. “How infuriating that would be. How tone deaf, Mr. President.”

Trump’s tweet also drew condemnation from Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News host who went public with allegations of sexual misconduct against Roger Ailes, the network’s former CEO, in 2016.

In response to Trump’s question about where Franken’s hands may have gone in “pictures 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 while [Tweeden] sleeps,” Carlson wrote, “What about yours?”

She was likely referencing comments Trump made on a leaked Access Hollywood tape, in which he talked about kissing and groping women without their consent.

“When you’re a star, they let you do it,” Trump said on the tape. “You can do anything … grab ’em by the p—y. You can do anything.”

On Friday, Kelly also had some harsh words for Roy Moore, who is currently in the running for an Alabama Senate seat. At least nine women have accused Moore of sexual misconduct, many of whom say they were teenagers when the alleged incidents took place.

Moore tweeted about what he saw as a discrepancy in the response allegations against Franken received compared to those leveled against him.

Mitch: “Let’s investigate.”

In Alabama, ZERO evidence, allegations 100% rejected.

Mitch: “Moore must quit immediately or be expelled.”

“Roy Moore!” Kelly said incredulously after reading out the candidate’s tweet. “Hello, Roy!”

“The allegations against Moore, which go back decades and which Moore’s campaign has insisted are politically motivated, range from unwanted pursuit to groping to assault,” Kelly said. “So is this guy going to be our next senator?”

Moore has consistently denied the allegations against him and railed against Republican lawmakers who have called on him to withdraw from the race amid the controversy.

“We could soon have, not one, but two sitting US senators accused of sexual assault, not to mention our president,” Kelly said. “Fear not, women of America. All is well. It’s fine.”

Emmy Nominations: Full of Exciting Inclusions, Infuriating Exclusions, and Barb https://briefnews.eu/emmy-nominations-full-of-exciting-inclusions-infuriating-exclusions-and-barb/ https://briefnews.eu/emmy-nominations-full-of-exciting-inclusions-infuriating-exclusions-and-barb/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 21:01:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmy-nominations-full-of-exciting-inclusions-infuriating-exclusions-and-barb/ It might be hard to take the Primetime Emmy Awards seriously — harder than usual, that is — in a year where people are left Tweeting things like:

Indeed, when This Is Us and House of Cards end up in the Outstanding Drama Series category, and the best-executed, most inventive (well, this is pre Twin Peaks: The Return) drama on television gets nothing except a “Guest Actress — Drama” nomination for the admittedly excellent Ann Dowd, meaning feels a little lost…as it perhaps always should on a ceremony with such a (albeit increasingly less) bland monopoly over nationwide perceptions of TV quality. Oh, and by the way, Insecure also was acknowledged for…nothing whatsoever, while Modern Family still managed to be the least modern show somehow still gaining an Outstanding Comedy series nomination.

But if you can get past the perplexing snubs without completely discrediting this list — or with discrediting it while still being marginally interested — you’ll find some great and/or weird surprises, as well as expected and wholly deserving series/performers/creators/writers etc. getting accolades. Among the exciting nominations on this immense list: love for Stranger Things and particularly Millie Bobby Brown (though, seriously, did Barb really deserve an Emmy nomination? Her death certainly moved many to meme-ing mourning, but did her life…really get shown, like, at all?); nominations for Westworld‘s brilliant performances by Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jeffrey Wright; nominations for Donald Glover (and his brother, for writing) and his sometimes-surreal, sometimes-hyperreal Atlanta; the continued recognition of Veep and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale, and Matt Walsh’s brilliance, which will never not deserve Emmy praise; unsurprising nods to chillingly potent prestige hits like The Night Of (speaking of which — two nominations for Riz Ahmed, including for his turn on the otherwise mostly overlooked Girls) and The Handmaid’s Tale, which of course scored nominations for Elisabeth Moss, as well as supporting actress nods for Samira Wiley and Ann Dowd (double Dowds this year!); RuPaul’s Drag Race‘s place within the Reality category (which it admittedly also transcends); double-nominations for Matthew Rhys, who, like Ahmed, was nominated for his brilliant (and troubling) Girls performance; Angela Bassett’s recognition for her guest appearance on Master of None; nominations for Tracee Ellis Ross for black-ish and Jane Fonda/Lilly Tomlin for Frankie and Grace in the ever-impressive Comedy Actress category; deserved attention given to Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Laura Dern for Big Little Lies; Ewan MacGregor’s nod for his twin performances on Fargo, as well as Carrie Coon’s should-have-been-for-The-Leftovers-but-whatever Fargo nomination, not to mention David Thewlis’ nomination for his role as the deeply creepy V.M. Varga on the show; a posthumous nod for Carrie Fisher in Catastrophe; and many many more.

Smith looks up, Kohli blows up1:23

STEVE Smith has revealed a communication breakdown with Shaun Marsh was at the centre of the DRS drama that sank Australia’s hopes in the gut-wrenching loss in Bangalore.

A chaotic series of dramas with the review technology and its use propelled India to a series-levelling victory after David Warner should have had his lbw dismissal overturned and Marsh opted not to refer a howler of an lbw call by umpire Nigel Llong.

On a controversy-laden day, umpires were furious with the relentless aggression of Indian captain Virat Kohli, and there could be fines aplenty coming from the match referee, with Mitchell Starc, Steve O’Keefe and Cheteshwar Pujara all captured on camera delivered withering on-field sprays.

But DRS was to also play a villainous role.

TENSIONS REACH BREAKING POINT IN BANGALORE

Australia were in a steady position in their arduous run-chase of 188 to win at 2-67 when Marsh was rapped on the pads not offering a shot and Llong put his finger straight up.

Due to Warner’s incorrect dismissal where the technology failed to pick up the fact he was hit outside the line of off-stump by Ravi Ashwin, Marsh was encumbered by the pressure of knowing that if he botched his review Australia would have no more referrals.

Smith says he told Marsh to go upstairs, but Marsh misheard him and trudged off — with Australia never recovering and going onto lose their last six wickets for just 11 runs.

Agonising replays showed that the delivery from Umesh Yadav was missing by miles.

Shaun Marsh LBW call should have been reviewed1:23

Cricket: Shaun Marsh LBW call should have been reviewed.

“In regards to Shaun’s one, we weren’t entirely sure,” said Smith.

“I said “go” as in “go have a look at it” and he turned around and started walking.

“I should have put my hands up and done it. We saw the replay and it was missing the stumps, it would have been a nice one to review.

“Perhaps it could have been important. Shaun was looking very good. But that’s the game of cricket. You have to move on and try and do what you can from there.”

Smith defended the umpires by stating the alarmingly deteriorating pitch was making conditions for them as tough as it was for players.

The Australian captain also attempted to play down the ugly behaviour by Virat Kohli and India on-field.

“That’s for the umpire to decide,” said Smith.

“Australia and India are playing, there’s always emotions flying around We get a little bit of white-line fever every now and then.

“As long as it’s kept on the field then it’s all good.

“There’s always some interesting banter between the two oppositions, I think it makes it a great contest.

“As far as I’m concerned the game was played in good spirits.”

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood (6-67) gave Australia hope and momentum with a blitzkrieg spell of fast bowling in the first session, but then the batsmen crumbled at the hands of another six-wicket man in Ashwin.

The fractious DRS situation then exploded when skipper Smith was lambasted by umpire Nigel Llong for appearing to glance towards the Australian dressing room when in the midst of debating whether to challenge his lbw dismissal.

Llong raced down the wicket yelling “No, no, no, no” at Smith, who then started to walk from the field out for 28 without argument, with Kohli arriving on the scene to give his counterpart a vicious send-off.

Umpire Llong grew sick of Kohli’s behaviour throughout the day and had regular conversations with the Indian skipper. Yet despite the confrontational nature, reports suggest there will be no charges from this game.
