  • Before the FBI raid, Trump's team returned a batch of documents to the National Archives in January.
  • More sets of classified documents were later seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago home on August 8.
  • It was in the FBI search when documents about a foreign government's nuclear defense system were found, per The Washington Post.

Highly confidential details about a foreign government's nuclear capabilities were among some of the documents that were seized by the FBI from former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home earlier in August, according to a new report from The Washington Post, which cited several unnamed sources familiar with the search.

Prior to the raid, Trump's team returned some documents that belonged to the government to the National Archives — more than 180 of which were later found to be marked classified.

But the FBI raid turned over more White House files, including about 26 boxes and 11 sets of classified material. 

It was during the August 8 search that federal investigators found documents about a foreign government's nuclear defense capabilities, several anonymous sources familiar with the investigation told The Post.

Details about which foreign government was in question and where Trump may have stored the documents were not revealed.

A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Monday, a federal judge in Florida approved Trump's request for a court-appointed third party to review the files that were seized from Mar-a-Lago.

The Justice Department has argued that having a special master would "impede" its investigation.

A White House spokesperson and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  • The committee said emails showed Gingrich pushing for TV ads with false election claims.

The January 6 committee investigating the Capitol riot said Thursday it is seeking information from Newt Gingrich about his involvement in efforts to subvert 2020 election results.

In a letter sent to the former Republican House speaker, the committee said it is seeking his "voluntary cooperation." The letter also said the committee had obtained messages that suggested Gingrich was involved in efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to cast doubt and even overturn the election results.

The committee said it obtained emails that showed Gingrich urging the Trump campaign to air TV ads repeating false claims about the election.

According to the letter, in one email sent to Jared Kushner and Jason Miller, Gingrich wrote: "The goal is to arouse the country's anger through new verifiable information the American people have never seen before[.] . . . If we inform the American people in a way they find convincing and it arouses their anger[,] they will then bring pressure on legislators and governors."

The committee also said information it obtained suggested Gingrich was involved in a plot to appoint alternate electors to vote for Trump on behalf of states that Biden won. The letter said Gingrich wrote in a text to Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows and White House counsel Pat Cipollone: "Is someone in charge of coordinating all the electors? Evans makes the point that all the contested electors must meet on [D]ecember 14 and send in ballots to force contests which the house would have to settle."

The committee is requesting Gingrich sit for an interview on September 19 and to preserve any relevant communications.

Gingrich's company did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Since the Google+ data exposure came to light earlier this week, European regulatory authorities have announced investigations into the matter and a US Senator has called for an FTC probe. Now, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation has sent the company a letter requesting more information about the incident and Google’s decision to keep it under wraps.

“Data privacy is an issue of great concern for many Americans who use online services. Particularly in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica controversy, consumers’ trust in the companies that operate those services to keep their private data secure has been shaken,” the Senators write. “It is for this reason that the reported contents of Google’s internal memo are so troubling. At the same time that Facebook was learning the important lesson that tech firms must be forthright with the public about privacy issues, Google apparently elected to withhold information about a relevant vulnerability for fear of public scrutiny.”

While Google discovered and fixed a bug in March that allowed outside developers to access around 500,000 Google+ users’ private info, it chose not to disclose the finding. The company’s official line is that because there was no evidence that data was misused and no way to know who was affected, it didn’t find a disclosure necessary. However, an internal memo obtained by the Wall Street Journal noted that revealing the bug could result in “us coming into the spotlight alongside or even instead of Facebook despite having stayed under the radar throughout the Cambridge Analytica scandal.”

The letter, which was signed by committee Chairman John Thune (R-SD) and subcommittee Chairmen Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Jerry Moran (R-KS), asks for a copy of the memo referenced by the Wall Street Journal as well as detailed information on how the company discovered the issue and dealt with it. Additionally, the committee wants to know why Google didn’t disclose the bug, whether it reported the problem to the FTC, if any similar incidents have been found and not reported and if Google will inform the committee in the event that it finds the bug did lead to data misuse.

The committee has requested a response by October 30th as well as a staff briefing on the matter.

At the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending Tuberculosis (TB), Peng Liyuan, wife of the Chinese president, urged the global community to unite in the fight against this deadly disease.

The meeting attendees praised China’s efforts to combat the “disease of the poor” and adopted the Political Declaration on the Prevention of TB.

Health is key

In her speech, China’s first lady noted that her country was making progress in the fight against the disease thanks to two factors: enhanced prevention measures and an information policy spread by media and volunteers involving 700,000 people. It is a struggle not just for the health of the nation, but to end the poverty that still blights many Chinese regions and to give people the chance of a decent life, stressed Peng Liyuan.

“When I visit foreign countries, I try to look at the prevalence of the disease and learn about local methods of dealing with TB. I am very glad to see that more and more patients are receiving the necessary assistance,” she said. But to maintain and develop this positive dynamic, joint work and coordinated action is needed at all levels, including between governments and experts, as well as between international and non-governmental organizations, noted Peng Liyuan, who has served as a WHO goodwill ambassador for the past seven years.

The meeting attendees highly praised China’s efforts in the fight against the disease, which are bringing tangible success: already the incidence of TB in the world’s most populous country has fallen to a new low. WHO Assistant Director-General for HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, and Neglected Tropical Diseases Ren Minhoi said that if the current trend continues, the disease will be completely eradicated in China by 2030. Director of the WHO Global TB Program Teresa Kasaeva stated that it was Peng Liyuan’s work in particular that had given China the impetus to combat the disease on two fronts, through enhanced prevention and more effective treatment programs.

 Time to act

Nevertheless, TB—which has always been considered one of the deadliest killers—has topped the list of most dangerous diseases since the end of last year, outstripping even AIDS. According to WHO data, more than 10 million people succumbed to the disease in 2017, with 1.6 million fatalities. The same report stresses that around 3.5 million cases of TB every year go unrecorded.

 One of the main causes of TB progression is the lack of funds not only for treatment, but also prevention. The WHO estimates that current anti-TB programs are underfunded to the tune of $ 3.5 billion, and the shortfall is set to double in 3-4 years.

In her speech, Peng Liyuan highlighted that prevention should begin as early as possible. True to her word, she personally travels around China, disseminating information about the disease among schoolchildren. Individual responsibility and selflessness are vital, noted Peng Liyuan, citing as an example a health worker from Sichuan Province who kept in touch with her patients even during and after a major earthquake there. For 20 days, the paramedic delivered medicine to 540 patients, who went on to make a full recovery. “The WHO has already adopted its End TB Strategy. It’s time to act,” concluded Peng Liyuan.
